  • r/Entitledparents Is there anything more dangerous than a Karen with a gun? In today's episode, OP is at the firing range practicing his aim. An entitled Karen decides that OP has no business shooting such a loud gun, so she actually walks up to him and tries to grab the gun out of his hands WHILE HE'S SHOOTING IT! Lady, do you have a death wish or something? Luckily, the store owners come to help and resolve the situation peacefully.

Glad there wasn't an issue. I worked at a stable with 32 horses. One time a pony gave me a warning shot (not sure what set him off, pretty sure I just spooked him). Another time an Arabian/Quarter mix saved me from a stampede. Horses have a mix of personalities and need to be respected for how much power they have.

I used to be a horse owner; neither was over 15 hands. A Clydesdale is a *monster*. Yes, they tend to be golden retriever in personality, but those hooves are the size of dinner platters. And ponies are just evil (do not let those cute faces fool you. Ponies. Are. Evil.) Mean is their default setting.

My mom grew up on a farm. Her father had two horses ..... a mare and a stallion that was her son. The stallion managed to get out of his stall and into the mare's and shall we say, had his way with her. The result was a beautiful foal ...... that turned into the nastiest mean tempered horse you would never want to be around. He would bite you sure as he looked at you. My grandfather said he was just crazy from the inbreeding. Grand daddy got tired of getting bit he had to get rid of him. Some other farmer in the area bought him knowing full well he was a mean biter. Us grandkids knew to stay well away from him. His father was a lovely horse ..... big and gentle and he would follow us around the farm and just hang out with us ..... maybe it was because we snitched ears of dried corn from the corn crib and apples from the orchard and we would give them to him as treats.

As a daughter of a single parent, I can confirm that even though I haven't had a dad in my life, after watching movies and such where the dad is constantly letting the young child down, I appreciate what my mom did. She left my father for multiple reasons. He smoked, he cheated on her with her roommate, and his parents were assholes. I remember the mom promising me that we'd go to the movies together or I could come and ride one of their ponies "sometime soon". That was what they always said. 7th birthday, 9th birthday. Never happened. Ontop of this, one day when me and my mom were invited over for dinner, they were having steak. I'm like 5 and they want me to eat steak. My mom managed to get the dad to make me some chicken strips, but they were HUGE and I'm a small kid. I had also eaten snacks earlier at the street fair. When I didn't finish what he served me he got angry and started yelling. There's nothing worse than having a family figure who promises to do all these amazing things for you and then never follows through.

This resulted in her going under every low branch and into the barn to see if she could knock you off. 99.99% of the time she was as sweet as can be. But with all animals, you can’t fully trust them. That horse story... Man. Some people are just clueless when it comes to safety around horses. Thankfully, I haven't come across any entitled parents while taking care of my friend's horse, but I won't be surprised if I do. I have only ever come across super sweet and understanding parents and kids, and it is just wonderful!!!
If you care to read some really sweet stories about some wonderful interactions that we have had, then keep reading!!!
I take my friend's horse, Patch, for walks (and jogs) along the trail behind the barn. The trail goes on past the barn and runs along the back side of a busy park with baseball fields, soccer fields, and a small playset.
On the weekends, there are always baseball and softball games, and lots of little kids running around the park.
Patch was a rescue horse, saved from a slaughter house, and he's generally fearful around new things, but we have worked really hard at building our trust and relationship, and he's pretty comfortable with pretty much everything now.
It took us a while to be able to walk down to the park trail area, but he's totally chill on it now, and he loves it!!!
Anyway, on the weekends, kids regularly see him, yell "horse!!!" and come running up to the trail fence. I'm fine with them running, because they usually slow to a walk some distance away, and it is good training for Patch to not be scared. If they're running full on and scaring him, I'll tell them to walk, and say "horses like it when you walk, because it can scare them when you run", but most kids have the knowledge to walk before they get to him.
I always offer to let the kids (and parents) come pet him, because it really makes their day, and for many, it is their first time petting a horse!!!
Last weekend, we had about 10 kids, on the trail, all petting Patch at once!!! I was a bit worried that he might get overwhelmed, but he was loving it!!! The kids were all super well behaved, and didn't go back by Patch's butt. He doesn't kick, but he does get scared, and I like to teach the kids to be safe. Patch was even licking their hands, and they were all laughing at being licked by a horse!!!
Just a few days ago, we met a mom and her 1 to 2 year old baby. The baby girl saw Patch exclaimed "Horsie!!!" and let out an excited little squeal and jump before running over. I offered that the mom and girl could pet him, and the mom was so happy!!! She said it literally "made her LIFE" getting to meet Patch with her daughter. She was so happy she started tearing up!!! She told me how she rode horses as a girl, and always hoped her daughter would love them too. Patch was so sweet reaching out to the baby girl and nuzzling her.
Another time, I was giving Patch a turnout, and this little girl was just standing there watching us. The turnout is right next to the parking lot that the barn shares with the park. I struck up a conversation with the little girl, and called Patch over to meet her. She was standing there for maybe 15 minutes or so until her mom came over. I remember when I was a little girl, totally in love with horses and always wanting to do more than just pet them, so I decided to offer to the girl, if it was okay with her mom, to come in to the arena and learn how to lead Patch around!!! I had only ever let my 10 year old cousin lead him before, and I had no idea how this girl, or Patch, would react, though I know my capabilities as a trainer and teacher and knew both Patch and the girl would do wonderfully!!! The girl was only 7, but she did an amazing job leading Patch over some poles on the ground, and even commanding him to do a turn on the forehand!!! She was positively beaming when it was time for her to go, and I know that she just had an experience that she will probably never forget!!!
We only ever had one sorta bad experience... But everyone was super nice and sweet as usual.
One time we were walking past some kids playing soccer, and the one girl who was aiming for the goal (the backside of the goal was along the trail fence) kicked the ball right as we were walking by!!! There was a hole in the net, and the ball rolled out onto the trail, right at Patch!!! He completely lost his marbles at a ball rolling out at him, but I calmed him down pretty quick. Once I got Patch calmed down, I called the kids over to talk to them. The mom watching them noticed, and helped get all the kids to come over to talk to me. I explained that next time, they should wait until the horse passes, before kicking a ball again, and that if a rider is on the horse, it could be very dangerous. I reassured the kids that they weren't in any trouble and that I wasn't mad... It was just something to keep in mind for next time. The mom apologized for not telling the kids to stop. She said she rode horses as a kid, and when she thought about it, knew that a soccer ball could spook a horse, but telling the kids to stop had just slipped her mind. I don't blame her, she had a lot of kids to keep an eye on. She was really good about telling the kids to walk and not run up to Patch, and I let them all pet him before we went on. The kids and mom were all really nice, and when we walked past them again, they all called out to each other that there was a horse coming, and to stop playing.
I love sharing Patch with kids, and letting people meet and learn about him!!! it's good training for him, and it makes peoples' days!!! :)

He reared and when I tried to lead him on he simply reared back and tossed his head. I didn't let go of the lead in time and that small action was enough to give me a pretty decent chunk of airtime and a near miss of the fence line that I immediately rolled under and then bolted.

'Don't approach an animal you don't know' is so true. I've seen it first hand when kids don't listen.
My family lives in a neighborhood that is very welcoming to families. At the time we had 3 dogs and my mom was out walking the youngest and biggest of the 3. We already knew that something wasn't right with him, since my mom had to work with him to actually like being touched. So there is this girl who had a bad habit of approaching peoples dogs without the owners consent. Multiple people on the street had dogs and kept telling her that she needs to ask for permission first but the parents never really enforced it (I worked for the parents before they weren't entitled per say). So this little girl approached our dog from behind, otherwise my mom would have reacted and taken control of the situation. So because she came from behind him and he already had issues with strangers. He lunged at her. He didn't do any harm but really scared her. My mom quickly rushed him back inside and grabbed our sweet old lady. She brought the sweetest kid loving dog over to the girl to calm her down and make sure that she doesn't develop a fear of dogs. (BTW a lot of neighbors were outside so they saw what happened)
We did bring our big boy to a specialized trainer (someone who handles aggressive and difficult dogs) and also knew that if he didn't improve we would have to put him down for everyone's safety. Well he improved at a surprising rate the trainer was impressed. He told us he will never be 100% but he was 10x better then before. Including a lot of neighbors helped with the training or understand that our big boy was being trained.

As someone who owns horses, people go stupid on them all the time. We have an electric fence with signs, people still try to reach over to pet or crawl through it. People have asked me if my horses are for sale (they're not), if they can ride them, and if I'll sell my mare's baby to them (the foal isn't even born yet, she's still pregnant). None of those were asked by children either

I lived in Boulder City, NV (think Hoover Dam area) I was coming back from the lake and see a car pulled off the side of the road. There was a large grassy area that the mountain goats come down to feed on occasionally. I look over and there's mom standing by the car with her camera taking pictures, not that unusual, but then I notice that her son, probably about 10 or 12, is walking towards the goats and is probably about 75 feet away from a large male with giant horns, and it is just staring him down. I slam on my breaks, jump out and yell at the kid to get the hell back. Mom starts to freak because I'm yelling at her kid. I look at her and say, " Those are wild animals. That one staring at your son will literally kill him if he gets too close. It's protecting its herd. Mo realizes what I'm saying and screams at the kid too.

I've never been on a horse, but my grandfather used to take my mum riding all the time. My mum told me that you don't know pain until a horse has stood on your foot, and she rode thoroughbred horses, imagine how bad it would be if a Clydesdale stood on your foot?
Also, my support worker has a thoroughbred and sometimes she lets me brush him (his name is Kenny btw) but I'm only allowed in the horse paddock if she's there with me and thankfully I have pretty good reflexes so if he moves suddenly, I jump out of the way. She won't allow young children or dogs in the paddock with her because Kenny killed her old dog (accidentally) he moved backwards and kicked the dog in head, not knowing he was there, which killed him pretty much instantly.
So OP's reaction to the kids sneaking into the horse paddock is completely reasonable. All animals can be dangerous, but the bigger the animal, the more dangerous they are. And Clydesdales are twice the size of a thoroughbred.

Reminds me of when I worked at a zipline park in my early 20s and a kid around 12 or so spotted a snake, perfectly harmless, off in the trees and because I happened to be standing nearby he asked if he could go get it. Ordinarily, I would've gone and got it myself, having had more than enough experience dealing with snakes, but every bit of responsible adult instinct kicked in and I just said to leave it alone. Nothing dramatic came of the situation but it was when I realized as an adult just how the minds of children work and that they don't care or really understand anything outside of what they want. He kept throwing out every line in the playbook; "I'll be careful!" Well I could get into trouble for knowingly allowing you. "Oh I won't tell anyone!" It was one of those little experiences that taught me how to deal with children and I ended it by simply exercising authority, "Leave it alone; because I said so."

I've assisted on lessons with kids around 4 years old and there needs to be at least 3-4 adults and older teens around at all times. Ponies are lovely but they are such brats who I've seen have the most nipping and tail ribbons (they indicate behavioral issues at places like horse shows) and are the ones who take riders for joy rides and tumbles from just the slightest bit of nervousness. I can testify that large ponies that are a few inches away from being a horse or just horses can be very sweet and golden retriever esc like op says. Even if some of the biggest draft horses I've ever met look like they could eat a small pony if they felt like it.

I went with my dad to the ranch where most of the carnival horses were kept since my dad was a volunteer for the event and I spent the entire time in the barn with my little brother and the horses, we were told by the ranch hands to not approach the horses from behind because they could get scared and kick us. (We were very young, like around 8 and 6 I think). We took that advice and we brushed the horses with the brushes we found and fed them strands of straw we found on the ground from their previous loads of food, the ranch hand even let me ride one of them around a small pasture! it was amazing! My sister had her foot accidentally stepped on by a horse when she was in her late teens early 20's (I forgot what year but in that timeframe) and she has to have her toenail surgically removed every so often. She is prone to ingrown toe nails but I wonder if the horse hoof made it worse. Plus she was wearing close toed shoes. I also work for a summer camp where we featured horses as part of the program (before pandemic) and you have to be careful with the horses especially with campers who are prone to be excitable so we tell them to be quiet for a certain distance. If an almost ton animal can do that much damage to a grown adult who knows how much worse it would be for a 4 year old girl. Imagine accidentally banging your foot against the leg of your table or some hard object and then picture it 20 times worse. While they are great animals, you have to be careful. Its the same for any other type of animal including cats and dogs.

Regarding the horse story, I was about the age of the older daughter when I took horseback riding lessons. The VERY first thing I was taught was how to be safe around the horse. She didn't even agree to teach me until I had shown I understood the rules and could be safe, under supervision of course. But even after over a year with her and even a horse show, she still didn't let me ride one of the more fiesty horses, or even pet it outside of the stall. Not because it was a bad horse, but because it was a large horse and I was still little and inexperienced. I was small enough that one lesson, the horse I was riding forgot I was on his back and dropped to roll in the grass. I was startled, so it took a moment to realize what was happening, but I had been taught what to do and I jumped off. I was perfectly fine. But it shows that even well trained horses are in many ways, still large animals.
I still remember certain details of my time there, dispite the fact it's been over 10 years. Things like if you're gonna walk behind the horse, run your hand along it's back so it knows you're there, and avoid being behind the horse if able. Avoid sudden, loud noises and try to stay calm and confident when riding b/c if the horse feels unsure of your ability to give it the correct/safe instructions, it's more likely to not listen. I also remember that they liked peppermints, and they loved the Halloween party where we had a horse costume contest! Many fond memories, and while I don't necessarily have a need to do it again, it was a lot of fun and taught me a lot about respecting animals and how to be safe around them.
