I drove 3 Chevy Silverado 1500’s over the past 20 years. Then a few years ago I bought a 2016 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn. I couldn’t be happier. The acceleration, passing power, quiet ride, are all much better with the 5.7L hemi vs the Chevy 5.3L. The biggest surprise is the gas mileage. Highway MPG w my Chevy’s was 17-18, but my Ram w the 5.7L gets 20-21MPG at 75mph highway driving.

My '17 gets 19 mpg on the highway, but that's only because of the MDS, which makes me nervous, but it is nice getting that kind of mileage out of a V8. Not sure why yours gets 20-21, maybe the gear ratio?

I tow over 9k boat regularly with my 5.7 Tundra 2wd. I usually stay between 65 and 70 on the highway, and get 13 on the highway and 10 in town. However, that truck has done the job for 205k miles without any problems outside of normal maintenance and a brake master cylinder replacement at 200k. From the way it runs I should easily get another 200k out of it. Point is I’ll take reliability over gas mileage any day of the week.

For real I would rather put 15k into my 06 than 80k into a new truck. I only have to worry about 4 or 5 big repairs. With these new trucks, who knows there could be 15 different concerns that could be 5k plus in repair cost.

    • @robertgreenhalge1708
      @robertgreenhalge1708 Před 9 měsíci +6

A Hybrid is NOT something you want to buy 15 years old! Granted, they have shown to be very reliable...many mid 2000's Prius's here in New England still driving with the original battery and 300k miles. But it's really just a matter of time at that point before they give out.
Personally on a truck I don't really see much upside for a hybrid. 2-3mpg better? Not worth it in my view. My Fusion hybrid gets 55mp+ in the city...better than double its gas only siblings. Trucks are not about getting good mpg anyway.
I will note; hybrid batteries are MUCH cheaper than a full electric car battery. $2-4k is still expensive no doubt, but nowhere near as high as people make it out to be. In many cases they are cheaper than replacing a transmission or engine, for example.

Love the episode. I got a 2022 F150 Plat Hybrid a year ago and own a 7000# Airstream that I tow. I ignore the truck computer mileage and always check my mileage at the pump. I get 12mpg towing which is what I got on my 2017 3.5L 10 speed; however, that is because it runs the engine during towing. I have gotten up to 25.4mpg in town. I really like the truck. It pulls the camper like it is nothing. I too am all for hybrids. This is my fourth F150. I went from a V8, to a 3.5 6spd, then a 3.5 10spd and now the hybrid. I much prefer the hybrid.

Really comfortable, easy view in all directions, easy to drive, nice radio feels really sturdy.
The only downside was the crazy powerful Hemi inhaled petrol no matter that you are slowly putting around or going highway speeds.

40k miles on a 21 F150 hybrid. It’s been a great truck. Lots of power if you need it, & economy if you lay off the gas. A few small warranty issues that are all solved. A number of recalls as well but none have affected me. I’ve gotten all but one (waiting for parts) taken care of.
BUT- Scotty, I don’t know where you got your mpg numbers from, but real world numbers for towing are much much lower.
Everyone’s mpg will be dependent on their driving style. I’m a smooth driver, favoring fuel mileage but I still run 70-75 on the highway. My daily drive is 50/50 city/highway and I’m at 23.4 over the life of the truck. I use the Feully app to log all my fill ups and maintenance so this is not reliant on the dash mileage computer. Plus, I calibrated the truck computer to within .2-.4 mpg using the engineering mode.
Both my F-150’s I’ve owned were over 1 mpg optimistic.
Towing varies on load, physical size, and driving conditions/elevation. But a 8000lb trailer would probably net no more than around 13mpg on a flat highway.
    At least that’s my experience.

The shifting he is referring to in the f150 is from the skip gear function in the transmission. It's always trying to get to the highest gear possible no matter what at low throttle input and is kind really annoying. It goes away in sport mode or when you stomp on it because it doesn't skip gears when it's past about 50% throttle. When around 10% -20% it goes 1-3-5-7-8-9-10 and anywhere in between. It can go 1-2-4 then 5 and 6. It's really annoying and is why most people get a TCM tune for the truck to clean it up or like I usually do.. drive it in sport mode at all times

I have a 2023 Hybrid F150 (Powerboost). Its definitely better than other 1/2 ton pickups. I'd say NO bleeping chance on pulling 8k pounds. No way no how. At 70 mph, on a round trip I've had it over 20mpg. At 85mph round trip, I've had it as low as 12mpg. At 60mph....round trip, you're probably looking at 23+. Pulling 8k? 21mpg? No ffing way. At times I wish I had not gotten the Hybrid, as I've found myself wondering "Hmm...I wonder when the battery is gonna fail and how much that's gonna be". Whoever told him 21mpg...shame on you. Well, I dunno. Maybe in a straight line with a wind at your back going 50mph. I mean, pulling a trailer, the hybrid portion isn't going come into effect. It's only and always at low speeds when the engine isn't under load. I also think so many exaggerate their MPG. I see a guy below saying his 5.7 Hemi Ram at 75mph got over 20. I had a 2020 Ram 5.7, no mods, and going 75mph round trip (I say round trip to offset the wind), I'd say 15-17mph. Is it possible, at some point and time, for some distance where you're going slightly downhill, or with the wind to get gas mileage like that? I suppose, but it's NOT what will happen on a continual basis to the point where you should be telling people "My Ram 5.7 gets 21mpg going 75mph down the interstate". If someone buys based on that...after a month they'll be calling you names.

I've never understood the concept of electric only. Maybe in the future when everything has gone electric and electric pumps are as common as gas pumps. We've been running hybrid vehicles for a long time using lead acid batteries in diesel locomotives. That's a well worn and tested technology. I'm still waiting for someone to make a small, cheap, and reliable diesel engine. Not anything with serious horsepower but enough to slowly charge a battery over time at high efficiency. Maybe one designed specifically for bio diesel instead of trying to adapt bio diesel to existing diesel engines.
Edit: Diesel locomotives with lead acid batteries, but for hybrid cars use better lithium or nickle technology.

Go for the F-150 powerboost (the hybrid). You won’t be disappointed. Ride quality and power is incredible. 430 hp + 570 lb/ft torque. 1000 overall power.

Why not a hybrid powerstroke build? Would just have to reconfigure the diesel engine for mid range, instead of low range, that can be taken care of by the electric motors.

Problem with ford is instead of recalls they issue TSB. Consumers pay for the TSB. Can you imagine how many TSB’s are issued on hybrids or full electric? Not to mention most technician’s have a hard time figuring out any modern gas vehicle.

5:55, least strain would be a v8 turbo diesel, nothing else even comes close to the crazy amount of torque produced by these diesel engines.

Must be running the 3.35 rear end gearing on that truck with the mileage he’s getting. My PB is running 3.73 and it’s pretty decent for fuel mileage but it isn’t as high..maybe 24 unloaded average, which is still great for a truck that big

Scotty, you’d be pleased to know Ford has been selling the Super Crew with a 6.5’ bed for nearly 15 years now. I have a 2013.
