I was able to get 32MPG on a road trip using my adaptive cruise control. My Wilderness ended up saving my life. Another driver was not paying attention, and t-boned me, causing me to flip and end upside down. Everyone was amazed that I was able to walk away. My new Outback Wilderness will be in in a couple weeks.

Similar to you I was torn between the Outback Wilderness and Toyota Tacoma TRD PRO. When you take everything into consideration the Outback simply can not be beat. Drives like a car , works like a truck and the MPGs beat any other 4X4 that exist.

I had a 21 TRDORP 4Runner and it was awesome! Only issue I just couldn't live with anymore was the fuel costs. Not with the perpetually high fuel prices. At the gas station all the time dropping $85 bucks a week. I ended up selling it and getting a new 24 Crosstrek Limited. It's not a 4Runner but I'm getting 35 MPGs on the highway and it cost about half as much to fill up and almost double the range. I purchased the 2023 Outback Onyx XT instead of the Wilderness for a few reasons, first the diff in gas mileage and I believe the Wilderness comes with just the bar and not the cross bars. The 1 inch ride height wasn't a concern. Our off roading is limited to areas in Utah or Arizona where it's dirt roads but nothing earth shattering. I loved the Forester 2020 that I had but I feel a bit like I'm upgrading to a Luxury wagon and everything in the Outback feels premium, with the exception of the gloss black, and the silver trim around the head unit which the sun often reflects and irritates me as I'm driving. We may in the future haul a teardrop trailer (via rental because I don't have a place to put it), but for now we're happy running around the mountains here.

We have both; a 2016 T4R and a 2020 Outback Touring XT. I love the OB on long trips. Its much more comfortable and the tech is awesome. Hugs mountain roads with the AWD and is fantastic on wet and snowy roads. However i would not take the Subi places i have taken the 4Runner; the 4Runner takes a beating with the body on frame that the Outback cant match. Also the CVT just wont take the stress that the 4Runner tranny will. Its basically bulletproof. We have a good combination owning both. Glad you are enjoying your Wilderness.

I have a 2001 Yukon XL that was basically my daily driver for years when my kids were younger because it was safer than a car and it can handle all kinds of weather and terrain. It helps that I can load it up for road trips also.
Kids are older now so I don't use it as a daily driver anymore for obvious reasons. But no intent on getting rid of it either.
We are looking for something more practical now for our stage in life now and the Outback would fit our needs of size, fuel economy (still not the best out there, but it'll do), able to take off the beaten path and to handle winters where I live.
Yeah a 4RUNNER or a Jeep is more capable but for most people they aren't going to go on extreme trails and an Outback is a better fit. And also Toyota and Jeep nickle and dime you to death on the options and are expensive.
And another thing is that people think that a 4x4 is more spacious because it looks bigger because it sits high and looks like a box. But in reality they are not usually. Except with the exception of large SUV'S.

Moab, Colorado mountain trips, cross country to Midwest, etc. It’s a fantastic road trip vehicle for dogs and gear. It’s very comfortable and handles great. I suspect the wilderness will be the same, only with more capability. We live in Colorado, so having the extra clearance for deep snow and some light off road is a bonus. Like you, I couldn’t stomach how expensive the 4 runner and Wranglers have become. They look great, but they aren’t that comfortable, and they don’t handle very well on twisty mountain roads, and are rear wheel drive until you select 4wd. You’re paying a lot for true off road capability that will rarely get used. Unless you are rock crawling with them, as most are not, you’re paying an awful lot for looks and to pick the kids up from soccer in style. They are great vehicles, but I couldn’t justify the overall value of them, for myself personally.

Thanks for sharing your experience with your Outback Vlad. I agree that Subaru have made a serious alternative to the vehicles you described. I somewhat like their big touchscreen and yet I wish they had a few more essential buttons rather than having to use the screen to access frequently required essentials (how much to repair/replace that touchscreen and how one cannot operate certain features if it fails to work) = maybe they will modify it with more buttons during newest versions of Outback. Anyway, happy for you. May the Ukraine be victorious against Putin and may your Allies from Europe and USA, Canada and many others who stand against such an Autocrat/Dictator, and may some USA voters awaken to not vote in a wannabe dictator/king who unfortunately is running for the Republican presidential ticket (hypnotizing many with his rhetoric, expects complete loyalty and submission like an Antichrist and has a history of being a compulsive liar… and is a Putin supporter). They're Subaru StarTex. Soft, comfortable, and easy to clean up if you get mud on them

The eyesight is a joke! If you can’t drive , then learn to drive. $41,000 is overpriced for that. I own a Subaru!

I have to disagree with you. Sometimes eyesight can be helpful especially if you drive in the big city where some people doing maneuvers without using signals. I’d say it’s nice to have, but always rely on yourself. With features this car offers for 41K it’s pretty impressive, because if you want the same features on Wrangler or 4Runner you have to pay a lot more.

Honestly, I don’t know much about tires. I really like all terrain tires that come with wilderness package
