      Bill Murray always plays himself in movies. He has this funny ongoing joke about him, where he’ll be places you’d never expect because he’s famous. I’m zombieland, he was HIMSELF which it why it was hilarious. In real life, he showed up to a place where construction workers were and just worked with them for no reason. He’s known for just “popping up” places. Movies too. When you watch ghostbusters, he’s so unamused by the situations because it’s literally HIM just popping up in random scenarios, in reali life, and in movies. When you watch most of his movies he has this unamused attitude. One time at a restaurant, he walked up to a woman and apparently ate her fry and said “no one will believe you.” He’s known for randomly being places.

      Not being an American, I lost the original domestic reception, but the history I have read is as follows: it was fairly succesful with the main target public, children, and it revitalized the Loony Tunes before theneyes of a generation more familiar with the Tiny Toonies even if it was not the hit the partnership of Jordan and Bugs would make one think it could be. However, as the '90s gave way to the 2000s, said children became cynical teenagers and young adults, and the whole social climate changed, too. The people who had the most reason to remember the movie fondly started to see it for the exercise in commercialism and opportunism it (in part) was. More recently, the nostalgia for the sweet '90s of their childhood and early adolescence (i.e. the yearning for a simpler and arguably less awful time) did its work, and Space Jam started to be seen as an enjoyable artificial of its time. Probably not iconic enough to deserve a sequel or something like, but good fun nevertheless.

    People seem to forget that NBA players in movies were actually a big thing in the 90s and that space jam was originally based on a commercial with bugs and MJ made years prior so there was already hype around the looney tunes and NBA collab. What is SJ2 playing off of? Just nostalgia of the first and nothing more.
    Sequels are historically worse than the original with a few exceptions and SJ2 isn't one of them.

    Here’s a real hot take: the Goon Squad from the second movie would win a best-of-seven series against the original Monstars, even without their far superior powers. This is assuming every player is in their prime and that they could play without substitution somehow.
    Here’s why:
    - the original Monstars team is like one mediocre and one amazing center, an average and an insane power forward, and the shortest guy to ever play nba basketball while the Goon Squad actually fills all five positional needs (assuming you put Klay at the 3) with all-nba/wnba talent.
    - Yes, the monstars probably have an insane defense and rebounding, but your only real shooters are Barkley and Ewing (who are admittedly very good) while the Goon Squad has three (Klay, Dame, and Taurasi). It could definitely go either way, but I think the Monstars are going to have a more difficult time catching up if they fall behind than the Goon Squad would. This is a weaker point of contention, though.
    - Muggsy Bogues is a serious liability on the defensive side if the Goon Squad can take advantage of his size. The weakest link on the Goon Squad is probably the 6ft Diana Taurasi, who is one of the greatest WNBA players of all time.
    It could definitely go either way, but I think the Goon Squad just has a few too many things going for the Monstars. Then again, the Goon Squad blew a much bigger lead to Lebron than the Monstars did to Jordan, so perhaps their inferior defense would be their Achilles’ Heel. Either way, this took me way too long to think about and write and I hope, if you somehow both found this comment and read this far, that you have a pleasant day.

    The thing with the first Space Jam was that it was a hail mary of a concept that really only worked because Michael Jordan who was at the time probably the most famous person in the world. He was still in his prime and at the height of his popularity. The movie also featured a who's who of other basketball hall of famers. The new movie by comparison comes at a time when basketball has lost a lot of its popularity and Lebron is in the twilight of his carrier.

    I'm binge watching Drew's videos and I just realized... I'm literally eating Space Jam promotional Trolli gummy worms. Bugs bunny is on the front in a jersey, spinning a basketball in his hand and saying, "Scan. Slam. Score!" He's standing under a "Space Jam: A New Legacy" logo. And I'm just sitting here in the dark, mindlessly chewing on my Sour Brite Crawlers, watching Drew and paying the package no mind for like half the video.

    The one thing the old Space Jam has over the new one and it's not even close is the soundtrack. Full of bangers! Also, MonStars > Goon Squad.

      when I was a kid, I would rewatch the credits many times just to listen to all the songs again and again
      The MonStars' theme was literally a collaboration by LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Coolio, Method Man and B-Real, how fucking cool is that???

    to be fair, "challenging short aliens to basketball in a comedic attempt to outsmart them" is exactly a Looney Tunes thing to do
    Bugs clowned on Gossamer by pretending to be a hair stylist one time, have you ever _seen_ Looney Tunes?

      The whole time he was criticizing looney tunes scenes was exactly the kind of thing they would do in their cartoons, I didn't see anything wrong with it LOL it was great just seeing these clips again

    • @aaronlandry3934
      @aaronlandry3934 Před 2 lety +52

      That’s why the original Space Jam works whereas the new one doesn’t. Space Jam 1 played up the absurdity of situations and gave stupid, looney tunes styled solutions to them like pumping a guy with air after he got flattened, whereas Space Jam 2 is just references to other movies and shows. It’s not the Looney Tunes, it’s some executives trying to make a quick buck with the Looney Tunes

    • @trashyysushi
      @trashyysushi Před 2 lety +19

      Yea I wasnt understanding where he was going with certain points. I was sitting here just thinking, "well isn't that the point of looney tunes ? To be in looney, wacky impossible situations ??" The first space jam gave exactly what needed to be given, stayed pretty faithful to the cartoon.
