Maybe the writers are showing the real dynamics between blacks and Hispanics. This happens a lot. A lot of times we may think Hispanics are ours friends but they're talking about us in Spanish in front of they're friends. Not all Hispanics but some treat blacks like this.
Trust me, this happens all the time. My aunties have done this to other people and roast them in Spanish.

I remember back in middle school this group of Hispanic girls who spoke both English & Spanish fluently would constantly speak Spanish in front of the kids who didn’t speak Spanish and it was obvious that they were gossiping about others. They made it so obvious by pointing & laughing at kids in the classroom.
Long story short, this reminded me of Papi from the Proud Family.
It be mad funny when you understood what they said and you back talk to them in Spanish and they be shocked. 😂😂

My Mom went through that in high school. In my hometown, there was (and still is) a big Jewish community that lived along with the black community, way back in the day. There was a bunch of Jewish students who spoke Yiddish in her high school. They talked all kinds of smack about the black kids especially using the "shwartze" (the Yiddish version of the n-word). The kid in front of my Mom said that among other things, and Mommy heard him. My Mom insulted him back in his native tongue! Oh... did I forget to mention that one of my Mom's best friends/neighbors at that time was also Jewish and taught her how to speak Yiddish and what words to look for? (Oops. My bad. 😏) Naturally, dude's jaw said, "Hi!" to the floor. He never did that again. (Same with his friends.) 🫖🍵
I honestly wish Sugah Mama learnt Spanish, because I'm pretty sure she'd be done with him and give her a piece of her mind if she knew what he was saying.
Yes I noticed that as well that Papi’s family would hear him say mean things and never check him. Smh unfortunately this is a somewhat realistic thing that occurs in many Latino communities

Papi reminds me of my aunties and my mother and my grandmother. They roast anyone in Spanish. I've seen it a lot within the Latino community. They even insult each other in Spanish, and its crazy asf.

Papi just exposes the anti black esa in the Latin community I face being biracial everyday. They say slick shit because they think we don’t think they know that what they saying. They’re very ignorant. It’s crazy that he wanted her once the clone started speaking Spanish. I always hated Papi because Suga Momma deserves better.

I know I’m late, but wow. You got me thinking. The Proud Family was a show I watched growing up. Viewing TV shows/movies as an adult really does open your eyes and realize the writing and jokes from these shows/movies didn’t age well.
There is history of how in some instances Hispanics truly don’t care for Black people, let alone African-Americans. Watching this video is realizing lots of Papi jokes was rooted in racism, fatphobic, and anti-Blackness. It just proves to you that minority groups don’t always serve the interest for Black people.

And then I discovered that un te original the joke was that he was speaking in spanish
For some reason, in the spanish dub, they leave the lines with no context, and even took away the english subs, as far as i remember
It took me years until I actualy ser the original and then I hoy the joke, because in the dub for Latinoamérica, everyone was talking spanish including Papi and Sugamama
This is but ONE of the many reasons why it's best to learn two or more languages! Treat others the way you want to be treated, is all I can say!
I agree so you’ll understand what immigrants are saying in their native language. Like in situations if they are bad mouthing you. I’m even practicing my Spanish every week and rewatching the movies I know in Spanish so I can expand my vocabulary.
This also suggests Papi being a terrible father to Lacienega's parents. He's probably such a shitty parent to them, that they're too afraid to call him out.

Penny doesn't act the same as dijionay but lacienega does she is just as loud and annoying but she is seen as more attractive cuz she's latina and not black.

You forgot that in the reboot one of Suga Mama's supposed "friends" could speak Spanish and listened to Papi insult her yet never stood up for Suga Mama or told her and tries to claim to be her friend at the end of the episode.
I know this isn't from the show, but from the Proud Family movie, I really liked that one scene where Papi was insulting the fake Sugar Mama at the basketball game and the said fake Sugar Mama snapped back at him in spanish. 😂
Ironically, Sugah Mama's clone in the movie only spoke Spanish and didn't like Papi at all. This actually made him fall in love with her.

This may seem Clique but I definitely think it was a race thing. I find it interesting that Papi ONLY switches his tune when Sugamomma speaks Spanish herself in the Movie. Regardless that it was a clone, he still was attracted to her the second she assaulted him and spoke Spanish. For the rest of the movie he is on the other side of the one sided relationship. I think Papi wasn’t just looking for someone beautiful but someone of his culture. Just a thought but I feel it works
I never liked his treatment to her, maybe I'm biased because Suga Mama is my favorite character but it all just gets a lot worse considering everything she's been through in her life. They're close, he probably knows about her story, and still chooses to constantly treat her like that. Like, for what purpose? He doesn't like her, he can't stand her, insults her (even with other people like that guy 1:45) in a language he's aware she doesn't know and will replace her for a young cute girl as soon as he gets the chance. Respect to your video, but I have a different interpretation of Papi and Suga Mama's relationship. Considering how Papi only bad mouths Suga Mama to her face in Spanish and no other Black character in the show, it's likely he was disgusted specifically by her. This isn't to say that he's in the right or that bad blood between the Hispanic and Black communities doesn't exist. I'm saying that Papi's treatment of Suga Mama likely has nothing to do with her race or culture.

Don't forget Papi was based off of 1960's Batman star, Cesar Romero's Joker! Besides, I LOVED IT when Papi insulted Suga Mama, because to me SHE DESERVED IT. Even though she lived with her oldest son Oscar, she ALWAYS TREATED HIM LIKE 💩, and showed way too much favoritism to her youngest less successful son, Bobby. She not only displayed favortism she was emotionally AND physically abusive to Oscar. In the episode where Suga Mama complained to Trudy about her mother showing favortism to her younger sister, Trudy pointed this out to her about Oscar... she STILL didn't get it. So, yeah... I loved it when Papi insulted her. She truly did deserve it. (To me, I saw Suga Mama & Papi as the elderly version of Dijonay & Sticky. LOL!) In fact, it was Papi AND Bobby that made me stick with the show. The Proud Family had some good moments, as well as wonderful running gags, like how he never saw "Wizard Kelly's" face, but we all KNEW that he was based off of Magic Johnson! LOL!!! And again, making Papi be an animated version of Cesar Romero's Joker was the icing on the cake! *add Papi laugh here* 💚🃏
Wow.....not surprised. By the time this show came around, I was in high school and never really watched it. Looking at this is cringey and sad. Looking at a lot of old shows and movies, you see the colorism and the overly exaggerated characters. It's very intentional to program viewers with stereotypes.

I never really liked Papi as a character, the way he would talk ab her in spanish reminded me of my self and the way other hispanics would talk ab me since I cant really speak spanish well. Its also pretty obvious that he was being pretty racist to her comparing her to animals constantly and calling her ugly, all around a nasty character

Hopefully in the reboot Penny gets a Spanish translation app and her and suga mama found out what papi has been saying all along

If it's true that Papi is only with Suga Mama for what she can provide materially, he is actually a rather sad kind of narcissist. It would explain why he's constantly trying to tear her down. Probably doesn't feel like he's worth much. On the other hand, look at Suga Mama: she might be the butt of the joke, but she is comparatively self-empowered.
I see it as karma for always hating on Oscar and after he disses her back she always beats him up
I find their relationship interesting. Because on the one hand, Papi is just rude towards her the entire time. But on the other hand, there's another actual instance where he is legit into her, and she doesn't change her physical appearance. And that's in the movie when she's replaced with a robot, but the robot knows Spanish and doesn't take his crap. In fact her talking back/ smacking him for his insolence, is a major point of attractiveness for him.
So I think he doesn't like her not just because of her looks, but more so because she is projecting feelings onto him when she cannot understand him. What he's doing is not right, but she is also a bit at fault in some way.

When i was younger i found papi's Spanish comments funny, mainly because of the laugh. As i grew older, i didn't find it funny anymore.
I'm bilingual and always heard both sides in real life and it was uncomfortable.
I really didn't like my latin coworkers making rude comments toward my black coworkers , and vis versa. I also hated feeling like i had to pick a side, when i didn't want to. Going back to the Proud Family, this was accurate of some of the latin community. Even La'cenaga shows those toxic traits toward Penny and i hate it.

Maybe it was to say, that since Poppy was always mean to Suga-Mama that when she lost the weight, it was like saying that since you were nasty, you don’t deserve just how attractive she really is. Another factor to mention is that Suga-Mama’s clone was made-out of Spanish peanut and loathed Poppy just for how disrespectful he was. Even threatening him at one point, which strangely turned him on.

Never liked this show. I hated how they portrayed all cultures. It seemed very racist to me. I’m not black but the handpicked husband trope really irks me. I do agree and have told the Hispanic community not to speak a Spanish a front of non Spanish speakers. Also the most racism i suffered came from black people. I don’t understand why the left thinks minorities get along with each other.
