- Welcome to another Closer Look. This time we'll be getting a review of "Father Figures," an episode within the Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. This episode doesn't only have gay representation, but it actually talks about issues that revolves around it. An episode that truly brings the talking points about homosexuality to the table, but how well did this episode discuss on the issues at play?

I love the way oscar is portrayed, he likes so many men I know (especially my father) this feels so genuine to how I see him act
Yeah it's a common problem that the black community has. A lot of older heads does not have a good grasp of homosexuality, so it's definitely an espect that needs to be discussed. Oscar was the perfect person to fit that role.
It’s honestly kind of nice to see a well known character represent the side that needs to learn that, and not just create a one and trash them after use
Why did this episode give Felix a pass? I mean, we find out that he's homophobic from LaCienega mentioning it but then we found out that Felix is okay with Barry because he's gay. As if, bisexual and pansexual men don't exist and that he probably needs an episode to work out why he is jealous of Barry to Sunset.
@@Neku628 It's because he isn't the main focus and Sunset would've probably set him straight. (Not to mention the relief to know that Barry is gay so he didn't have to worry about shenanigans between Barry and his wife)
@@JasonBladeReviews It just be nice to see some Boulevardez family focused episode, especially regarding Sunset and Felix. I mean, we did see some hints of it like Sunset forcing Felix to put Papi into an old folks home because he flooded the house and gave Felix an ultanium.
Also, I saw a clip about how Sunset used her position and privilege of being a cop into getting Felix to marry her.
I do like that Felix is willing to stand up to Sunset when it came to her trying to outspin her sister and how she shouldn't compete with her sis.
As a closeted bisexual Muslim girl, I can truly understand the weight of this episode. LGBT is not something you can control, nor can you expect it. Homosexuality is haram in the Quran, and in my case, hated. And what hurts more is that many other people have it worse. In places like Saudi Arabia, homosexual people are executed for being found out. It's nice to see some representation and diversity in modern places such as Netflix and fictional novels, especially since I'm Canadian. But simple representation like seeing same-sex couples such as Catradora or Lumity will not be enough to change haters, nor does it touches on the hostility and discrimination people face. You did a great job establishing that.
Ahh hell nahh man look at my ummah dawg it’s over man
@@aziza4170 What are you trying to say?
Don't listen to Aziz, thank you for sharing.
Well the world is starting to change, people arent tolerating the violent bigoted bs that some religions are doing, soon either they change or die out with time.
@@aziza4170 bro what? What message are you trying to get across?
My dad is just like Oscar, he told me I should treat others how I wanna be treated, also saying “just bc ppl are different doesn’t give you the right to disrespect them.” And literally when I wore rainbow one time my dad argued with my mom bc he thought I supported the lgbt, and after hearing their argument it just became rlly uncomfortable to even be around him knowing how much of a hypocrite he is, none of my siblings even wanna be like him, I didn’t even wanna be like my dad *anymore*
That sounds so hypocritical it’s crazy 😭
"Just because people are different doesn't give you the right to disrespect them"
**sees something that could possibly imply someone's different than him**
*_*I M M E D I A T E L Y d i s r e s p e c t s t h e m*_*
...yeah no I don't see how that's hypocritical in the slightest-
I can understand this feeling. I’ve only recently realized that my dad, without getting into detail, is a flawed human. I still have respect for him, and obviously if you live in your parent’s house you gotta follow their rules, but I do not condone some things he does or says. No one is perfect, and disappointing, but also an opportunity to have difficult conversations.
This hit too close to home a wee bit
Always had a hard time describing this- but its literally disappointment when realizing you were being raised by someone who may not of been a great person this whole time
Oscar’s homophobia reminded me of My dad being homophobic and my mom is just as bad as he is. And my sister wasn’t even around to have my back. They’re why I’m afraid of coming out.
I'm really sorry that you're having to go through this. I understand how hard it is to not know who you can trust to love every part of you. I hope things get better, if you ever need someone to talk to, don't be afraid to reach out!
Hands down you’re so strong for having to deal with that, I know the social and familial pressure of coming out. I didn’t really come out until I was 18-19 and even then my mom was pressuring me when I was a CHILD to say if I’m gay, bisexual, straight or whatever which only pushed me further away and scared me into not diving into that part of myself until my middle/highschool years. Stay strong buddy and come out when you feel its the time and you’re in a safe place!❤
Don't come out until you have your own place
Well as long as ur friends support you, you always have a place to go!
I think Oscar's homophobia also goes further in humanizing black people, by showing them as people with realistic flaws. Not necessarily the big angry black man that was peddled back in the fifties, nor the wise, morally perfect saint who's pure greatness reeks of overcompensation. People have flaws and say and do stupid things, and for better or worse, more people need to see that.

It makes me furious that Penny never fully drops her ass. Shes one of the worst people to be called a friend
Why is Oscar homophobic? It's funny that in that episode where Penny went to live with a Muslim family, Oscar was willing to say that she didn't have to go. We get a bit of a backstory to Oscar's childhood and that Suga Mama never let him hang out with anyone but then just dismisses herself from any accountability of why Oscar didn't have no friends by blaming him. Suga Mama just seemed like she was gaslighting Oscar. It really sucks that this show lets her get away with a lot of the abuse she gives Oscar.
There have been scenes that hint at Suga Mama being negligent or abusive towards Oscar and treating his brother as the golden child.
I think the show let's her get away because that is how most abusers are handled as, not important.
@@taynakonate3997 i wish the show kinda brings this into light 😔
@@notmyhairyarmpits yes because Suga Mama herself was abused as a kid typically if you grow up in a abusive household you will see that as normal and then when you have kids of your own you will (naturally) see that as the way you are supposed to treat your kids so you do it my dad whipped our asses as kids and I internalized it as normal so when I got around normal kids and their parents and I didn’t see the parents give them a ass whipping then their was that one instance where a girl I knew Mom came to the school and beat her in front of the class
I’m black and I know a lot of black men who is like Oscar. As a lesbian with a dad that doesn’t agree with homosexuality or knows that I am gay, I can relate to this.
I feel like that's kind of a hot-button issue with POC.
We have a solid majority (globally speaking) who don't want us to be associated with the queer community, despite the many POC who are part of said community - myself included.

Bro my dad is very much homophobic, he's very manly and tough. He is sweet but unfortnately when I had came out- he laughed at me said I was corrupted by TV (Brothers too) and what made me mad is after I learned more about LGBTQIA+. I felt very hurt, since he had old me to be accepting of others and I was- broken after..
So OScar being homophobic hurt a lot.
I saw this episode and I found it weird that Penny’s friends were having issues accepting the gay dads but one of their close friends is gay, gender nonconformity type of dude.
Maybe they think it's a phase and he'll "get over it"? Idk, that's my theory.
Anyone else think than original series Oscar would be uncomfortable with same sex relationships but not outright homophobic?
I don’t know… he was outright sexist in the original. So it’s hard to say.
But in one episode, the guy friend was dancing a boy and he didn’t seem to have an issue. The homophobia storylines don’t really make sense or go with the continuity of the other episodes,

Honestly, ever since the Kwanzaa episode in the original series, I knew that Oscar was close minded and bigoted. So unfortunately him being homophobic REALLY doesn't surprise me.
I'm not fond of how it ended, how quickly oscar apologized. I highly doubt homophobes would APOLOGIZE in a day or even LESS than a day after showing homophobic traits. It would have taken much longer...it's unrealistic really. 'oh they'll INSTANTLY know they're wrong' no they won't. They're stubborn and less-likely to change their ways at ALL.

Feels more like 85/15
In Dijonay defence, while what she did was terrible, the school was gonna find out about her gay parents anyway. I mean, there are school activities and parents night, most likely either both or one of them gonna show up and put two to two together that Maya has two gay dads.
Or a step father
Regardless if it was inevitable it was literally none of her business or her place to spread info like. But then again this is dijonay and she’s just awful
@@avej99 that is true as well
Well, yeah. It might’ve been inevitable but it still wasn’t her place to spread that around the school. And it’s kinda hard to defend her when she repeatedly does things to stir up drama or keep drama going throughout the series
Not really a defense there. It still could have been a private matter. Not everyone wants their family life out in the open.
This episode made me realize I probably had it a lot easier since I transferred into homeschooling when I came out to my parents to keep me safe. I can’t imagine how hard it is for queer kids in school, especially now with how vitriol it’s become for them.
Someone's gotta beat Dijonay's ass at this point bc this girl cannot keep getting away with this
I haven't watched the show, but this essay is superb. You bring out some important points
You can't even say "Sorry boomer" because Suga Mama actually IS a boomer and she doesn't claim that mentality. Oscar's worse.
Something you can try to do to improve yourself is take everyone else’s opinions and issues into consideration by imagining yourself in their shoes. This is shown in many proud family episodes.
I like how one of the kids stayed behind to speak their mind about what actually was goin on. If someone didn't explain, it'd be harder for people to understand and leave it alone or defend. To take an action, you must know what you're up against. That kid was very informative about their problems. Respect.
Now, I dont want to say the others treating Oscar like that was wrong, but, shunning someone seems lile it'd only push them further into their bigotry and such.
And how did Oscar become homophobic anyways? Im sure Suga Momma didnt raise him like that.
as a closeted genderqueer cupiormantic, i definitely see my parents in Oscar’s portrayal of homophobia. it seems a lot like he just.. misunderstands, or at least that’s what i’m getting from the way he’s acting. (the hesitated, forced smile and thumbs up when the gay dads were sharing affection, not wanting his daughter to hang out with the gay couples kids.) my parents definitely aren’t homophobic, just don’t know how the community works and how we’re affected by such misunderstandings. i’m not out to my parents, but i have a few trans friends and i can def see the hesitance in my parents whenever i talk about them. there’s a difference between outright homophobia and misunderstanding that can be potentially be fixed by teaching others about the community. i might be wrong and he may just be flat out homophobic but that’s not personally what i’m seeing here. just some plain old being misinformed about things.

I think the original Proud Family tackled serious issues well but from what I've heard and seen of the reboot so far I think it's done a pretty bad job tackling most of them. I still wanna watch the reboot myself maybe not all of it is bad but my opinion of it isn't very high.

Yo, I’m so impressed with this. This would NEVER happen to me as a kid. All I had was that square headed kids parents from Clarence, a plot twist adventure time Bubble gum princess + Marceline, and the loud house with Clyde’s dads. They all had parents, which as a kid I just excepted, but never went into detail like THIS. ITS CRAZY GOOD
The “Square headed” kid’s name is Jeff by the way.
The scene from community was a lovely representation ❤
I hate Oscar but I love his character as the goofy, selfish, but loving father who gets what he deserves every time and tries ecerytime
I’m actually kind of mad because they waited a whole year to finish a 2 part episode instead of having a hour long episode
I knew I was bisexual when I was about the ages of 6-8 years old (this was back in the early 2000s, and I never heard of the word until middle school or high school). I didn’t fully accept it until just this year at 27 years old, because of how some of my family members are. After I came out, I finally felt so free, but at the same time, I still feel like I gotta hide my true self when I’m around some of my family members 😓. Thankfully my fiancé will back me up in case shit hits the fan lols
One thing you missed about the next morning scene, is that Penny's room had a purple light coming out of it. I noticed this cause you mentioned the purple in the crowd representing the struggles we don't typically see, and I think it's meant to represent Penny's struggle as an ally. She knows homophobia is wrong, and she wants to do the right thing, but being an ally living under the same roof as a homophobe can be tough. Especially if they're someone you love and respect, like a parent.
Well said just well done sir👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I need to give this show a watch. I liked it as a kid because I like seeing people like me, but admittedly it wasn't one of my favorites because I was more of a Dexter's Laboratory / Powerpuff Girls Kid. I've heard about the reboot and I didn't want to watch it until I could hear about it and then I forgot. But as a trans man with a dad who is like oscar but without the goofiness, I want to see it
i think the best gay representation is when the character is just stated to be gay and thats literally it
the first example that comes to my mind since i played the game recently is kim kitsuragi in disco elysium, hes canonically gay but its a oneoff line and its never important, but its still really cool
That’s just lazy representation though. A “blink and you miss it” type shit. It’s okay to expand on it and showcase it to normalize it for the people. I do agree modern writers really struggle in that aspect, coming off as stereotypical and at times “woke” (which there’s nothing wrong with being aware of social issues, it’s the portrayal that matters.)

While I think your analysis is apt and in depth, I disagree with your praise of the show. I think that this structure falls flat in multiple ways, but the biggest way is that the payoff of the show, the entire reason this episode exists, is to fulfil revenge fantasies for homophobic people. I write it this way specifically because this episode is NOT about the interactions of gay men, black men or families with nonstandard arrangements. To accomplish this goal it has to use its characters as props rather than people who exist in their own world. Depending on what you think the focus is, all characters were used through their identities exclusively, rather than their thought, actions or growth. Here's what I mean:
IF you believe Oscar's arc to be the main focus of the episode, and the whole setup is designed to give you a 'haha what an idiot man' ending, then the entire cast of the two fathers and family do not add anything to this arc besides making the audience think that he "deserves" to be denied, because he's homophobic. This wouldn't be new to the characters, as things of this nature happen to Oscar repeatedly, but then the fact that the parents were gay adn that the children are dealing with the complications of having two fathers is gratuitous and makes me wonder what that focus adds to Oscar's plot.
IF the children's arc is the main focus, then the whole set-up and payoff of Oscar's side quest seems so disingenuous. In a vaccuum the over-exaggeration of causes and effects is pretty standard for a cartoon, but when you frame all that suffering doesn't get appropriate payoff.
The fact that the new kids have two dads feels so superfluous because it is treated as if that everyone's responses would be so black and white, and those who are fully supportive get positive results and those that are fully against it get their loans denied. Its more of an assertion than it is representation. You could easily draft a plot that fits the vibe and more centrally discusses the topic, this is assuming that the writers don't want to use the fact that they have gay people in the show as a quick cash grab/woke check on their corporate checklist.
The mother wants to host a dinner with the new family, and while interacting with them, Oscar finds out that they are gay, and immediately has no response, but when back alone at the house, he voices a concern that they should cancel the dinner. Everyone wants to know why since, everyone loves him, and Oscar struggles to find a reason. From here you can go a few different ways. You can have Oscar get challenged by one of the family members on the fact that he's uncomfortable with two gay fathers, leading to more denial, or a sudden realization that he has to go overboard to seem accepting. Or you can have him strike down hard and aggressive that he explicitly hates gay people for whatever reason. Have the dinner fail due to awkardness or passive aggression or unwanted questions or anything. You can easily spin this to make it actually funny, but then for resolution (A key step that actually grows Oscar's character from his own perspective, not from the weight of society forcinig him to change like in this garbage episode) Have oscar apologize, and then the proud family gets invited over to the new kids for a makeup dinner. Maybe Oscar shares similar food interests with the black gay father, maybe the grew up in similar areas and like the same comfort food, or maybe he shares hobbies with the white father, etc etc. This gives the feeling that their resolution is natural not a forced "gotcha" moment where the "homophobic oppressor" gets "what he deserves."

I think this would have been more relatable if the part of Oscar telling Penny to not hang out with the kids with two dads were cut out. I think discomfort is a much more common reaction than disapproval. While I have no major problems with this episode in particular, the thing that bugs me about louder and prouder is their shift towards “woke” ideals rather than simply teaching good morals.
Nah, Especially in the black community I can tell you there are a lot of dads who are exactly like this and this is a very common scenario people actually experience. From my point of you this was a pretty realistic and genuine response for what I’ve seen
Shifting towards woke ideas in the case of this episode can still be good and does teach morals. Woke ideas it’s just progressive ideas which are objectively good it just depends on how you communicate them. Oscar is a realistic father in a black community, I’m straight up heard these things we said before and it’s good that they were presenting this. I actually think this episode was done pretty well

Granted I don‘t know the episode or series. But just the concept to focus on a straight and homophobic character who learns a lesson to support gay people, by learning to respect one gay person individually - that doesn‘t seem original to me. That idea rather seems like it has been done before a lot. (I remembered a Simpsons episode from like 2007 that did this). When that straight character is the focus, it rather implies that it a(nother) straight themed story, at least for the main plot of „he gets the loan“. Because it focuses on the straight person‘s character development while the gay characters seem moreso a plot point for his story. That narrative might be done well here (I don‘t know the episode), but it still has specific limits to what it it can tell (about gay characters) . I personally prefer when there is focus on a gay charcter‘s perspective. There are less stories like this yet (compared to many straight characters), and they can tell different stories.

And the thing is this was not just a peck as the couple displayed alot more affection than necessary, like I said it's just not appropriate during work. U wanna do that you excuse yourself. But I think u pretty bold to be assuming anything of me. Maybe you're too judgmental and wanna make an enemy out of anybody that has an opinion you disagree with.
@@c.lineofficial I'm not one either. To be clear if I'm odering something and the male employees girlfriend comes in and gives him his lunch and a peck it's whatever, I would prefer the employee finish his service and excuse himself but a peck is quick. But if the girlfriend comes in, starts talking and becomes very affectionate all while I'm just trying to get an order done then it's awkward... I'm just standing there wanting to move along. So even between a hetero couple it's weird and possibly annoying. And I think it's in any workplace where you deal with people/ strangers.
I don’t like anyone in that show except the grandma
Your taking a mediocre written show, way to seriously brother.
I love what you're putting down, but there's only one problem. Why the animal vibe?
Why not?
@@JasonBladeReviews eh, you have a point
I really didn't like this reboot
All I can think about is Tweek and Craig so all I can say is- uh- gay.
"All i CAn THiNK ABoUt Is TWeeK and CRaIg" Of course that's the ONLY thing you can think of. You're probably an 11 y/o sp fan tbh
@@mxmiv Woah, what was I like 5 months ago, holy- (Well, I'm 15 now. Into greek myth at the moment. I thankfully learn very quickly, so, I haven't really thought about South Park in a while-)
@@malegender27 Tbh that's impressive, I don't learn that quickly. I'm 13 turning 14 in a few months, and I wouldn't think of learning about Greek mythology. I'm really only good at one subject and I'm not the best at it. 👩🦯

bro shoulda told me before i clicked on the video 😫😫😫😫😫
Must be quivering in your boots 😵💫 So terrifying!
Chill out dawg it's just a flying dog
Except this is forced with no explanation, but 'diversity' and representation. Shows that force gay characters onto its audience for an agenda or because woke Twitter says so, for not reason, but forced diversity. There are no modern shows with a gay character who is not annoying at all. Batwoman, She-Ra, She-Hulk, and more. That's why men are walking away. It seems to me that only woke women like gay men because of their feminist dogma about "toxic men" despite that real masculinity is not toxic and some women are far more toxic. Real women want confident alpha men.
As a straight dude I'm fine with gays, Love is love and if you want to be with someone of the same sex then you do you, but I feel uncomfortable when I see men kiss. public displays of affection are cringe asf whoever does it but Seeing two dudes kiss just makes me feel uneasy.
THE REPRESENTATION RUINED MULTIPLE SHOWS. THEY NEED TO LOWER IT.
As someone with two moms I can understand how the two kids (I forgot their names 💀💀) feel. I’ve been bullied, harassed, and many other things just for having two moms. 🫶
Wait, this is a furry, uhh
ikr crazy
Yes, truly terrifying/s
I can't believe I'm agreeing with a furry
