    Can we point out that compared to a lot of TV dads, both Cartoon and live, Oscar actually loves his family and isn't a jerkass, manchild, or a psychopath or constantly whining about how awful his family is?

    • @WULDORI
      @WULDORI Před 2 lety +38

      but his love for his family isn’t justified. He’s a loser and everybody close to him is constantly reminding him of it. I really feel constantly torn between whether to feel sympathy for him or feel like he deserves everything that happens to him. Chicken or the egg, really. Was he villified for being a jerk or did he become a jerk for being neglected as a son?

      >Isn't a jerkass...
      There was literally a scene in an episode where he went flat out sexist and told Trudy that she was the woman and he was the man, and demanded that she cooked dinner.
      >...manchild
      There have been many occasions where he started whining like a child and cried out to his mom for help.
      Can't really say anything for psychopath and whining about his family, but he is definitely the first two examples.

      Now that I think about it, isn't it weird how the show never really answers how the Prouds are well off despite Proud Snax being in the toilet? I know it was said that Trudy pays the bills, but if that's the case, the Proud house doesn't look like it would be cheap to pay for. Add on to that Oscar owning a factory, paying for promotional material, and still having money for allowance. Is Oscar Proud guilty of money laundering on top of possibly multiple homicides? Since he stole an idea from someone for snack land, trying to up the Wizard and not opened for many things like in Father Figures he forbid Penny being friends with Maya and KG cause they have two dads on account of he never met them or even get to know them since he's what he is. Not to mention he even won't admit he is wrong or can't except most things like when Bebe was diagnosed with Autism. He maybe a good father at times, but most times all he cares about trying to make his nasty snacks well known to the public like in Snackland episode where he fired Penny and the others for Lizzo and even ruined Penny's Get In business when he made a fake driver's license for Mr. Chips for a EPA inspection since he uses monkeys to eat his awful snacks and one to work in his factory and if that doesn't scream 'health inspector' then Oscar needs to find a job he can really do

    I actually have a theory about Suga Mama. The reason why he treats Bobby as her favorite is because she knows his music can only go so far and had no choice but to baby him since he has no skills to stand on his own 2 feet. Meanwhile, Oscar DID develop those skills and that's why he can afford a house(guessing in full and no mortgage), education for his three kids, having a loving wife, and trying and failing his own business. I think subconsciously he DOESN'T want to be his mom's favorite cause that means he'll be living with her for the rest of his life mooching off of her just like Bobby is. AND the fact that Suga Mama always has Oscar's back one way or another proves that she really loves her son. Don't know if you saw louder and prouder yet but it turns out that Suga Mama's childhood was almost more abusive than what she's doing all because she's a girl and she's trying hard not to repeat it. Is she failing at that? In some points yes but I can already tell she a WAY better parent than her own daddy.

    8:48. It's also worth pointing out that Suga Mama sang a song to Oscar telling him that he should believe in himself more, instead of looking himself down. The problem is that Oscar never really picks this up; what he just interpreted from the song was that Suga Mama sang something so heartwarming to him. He didn't really understand the true message as to what she wants him to pick up on. He only rejected the offer from Wizard Kelly because he was in a very emotional state as well as thinking that's what Suga Mama wanted him to do. Literally after the whole foot fiasco, Oscar still wanted to make snacks similar to Suga Mamas since, even if the secret behind them is kinda messed up and everyone knows about it at that point, they were still very successful snacks. True, while he stated that "snack making is in his blood," making it seem like he's believing in himself, in reality, he's really not. He's just doing what was already successful instead of doing something else that might've gotten him another form of success. And the fact that everyone knows that Proud Snack's reputation is already ruined further because of the foot fiasco, and yet he still wants to do what Suga Mama did, just proves this further. This episode really aged well.
    Also, people need to realize that a "dumb or foolish dad" being so prevalent has a reason for being so prevelant. The purpose is to give these guys a character and make them more interesting. Granted, media should do more than just make most fathers idiots or buffoons, but the purpose is there. Imagine if these parents didn't have any personality, and instead they're just the nice and perfect dads. That's not good entertainment; that makes the parents super forgettable and boring. Plus, a dumb dad or a silly dad can work really well. There's a reason why Jimmy Neutron and Proud Family fan's usual favorite characters are Hugh and Oscar since they're memorable and funny, even if they do have some problems being effective parents. Meanwhile, Kim's father from Kim Possible is what I'd consider to be an almost idealistic father. Sure, he makes dad jokes and can be a bit overprotective, but he's an overall nice dad. But most Kim Possible fans probably wouldn't even put him in a favorites list since there are other more interesting characters in that show.

I think so many shows try to do the "dumb dad" done right approach but most of them often fail at it for varying reasons, or they just make them out to be just the dumb dad, with little to no redeeming qualities outside of them just being "funny." I think Oscar is the right blend of a dumb dad being played up for laughs with his shenanigans, but he's redeemable enough to where you know his heart is often in the right place, which makes him easy to root for. I think another great example of the dumb dad done right is Tim Allen's character from "Home Improvement", as well. He was an idiot too, but he always knew when to do the right thing, and when to ask for help when needed.

    Timmy's dad is very inconsistent: sometimes he's risking his life to save timmy like when he thought he was in the trunk of a car when in reality he was the car in the episode "engine blocked" or when him and timmys mom look all over dimmsdale to get timmy back and hijack a radio station to tell timmy they love him and want him to come home in channel chasers, even some later episodes in like season 7 show he cares for timmy to alot of other times where its just a dumb joke he dosent care about timmy.
    Mr turner isnt 100% a monster just extremely inconsistent thanks to the writers flip flopping his likeablity to fit the story or the jokes they wanna tell instead of being making jokes and writing around a consistent personality like u should do.

    9:47-9:50. In hindsight, this entire show's reception of its characters can be summed up with that one line:
    "Oh, Suga Mama's is a mother that picks favorites, so she's a bad character; oh Oscar is a bad dad because he's overprotective; oh Penny's friends are horrible, and they always treat her like crap (even if there are episodes where they all do help her on occasions, INCLUDING FUCKING DIJONAY, and Lacienega isn't supposed to be judged for being a bad friend when the show made it clear that she and Penny are not really friends, so it's expected of her not to treat her nicely." Like seriously, watch the fucking show deeply and then make these statements please.

    I think the reason why people hate Oscar is because the trope of an "overprotective dad" is kinda a hard sell nowadays, where society is encouraging people to be more independent and free-minded. Granted, people are right in the fact that Oscar does sometimes go a bit too far being overprotective to Penny (plus he is a bit unreasonable at times), but I think the show makes it clear that he does genuinely care about Penny and just wants her to be raised well (you know, like a typical good parent wants for their kid?). Also, you have to understand that Suga Mama has basically neglected him in favor of Bobby, so this is an example of him not trying to repeat her past mistakes. Plus, a lot of the things he's overprotective about are true (like he has a point where he doesn't know how the boys that Penny's interested in have been raised, so how can he truly trust Penny if he can't trust her potential partners). Furthermore, I do like how he a very believable parent that has his own goals and aspirations that, while yes does rub off on Penny unfortunately, makes him feel more human instead of just being "the generic parent" (One in a Million and Spelling Bee are very good examples of this, and I love how those episodes characterize him). He feels like the most realized parent of Disney Channel in my opinion, to the point where the other animated parents after him really feel like sanitized versions of him. I can understand why some people might like them more than Oscar, but Oscar has way more going for him.

      Trudy is as guilty with flirting with other men, but that's only when things are like platonic between her and the other men (specifically the episode with Dave or her dance instructors). Plus, when she does actually get excited around men, its usually because they're celebrities, so you would except someone to act like her in those cases.
