Mercedes SLR McLaren 'MSO' 1000 mile road-trip special. Lake District, Donald Campbell, Bluebird

- The Mercedes SLR McLaren was launched back in 2003 and now in 2021, MSO (McLaren Special Operations) have launched a revised version of this 208mph, carbon-fibre bodied GT. With more power, revised chassis new body colours and interiors, I decided to take in on a 1000-mile road-trip to the Lake District to find out what it was like to live with on a big trip.
During the video, I investigate Donald Campbell's disastrous world record attempt to become the fast man on water in January 1967 in his boat, Bluebird K7. This section of the video starts at 17:53 and ends at 24:58.

Who needs Top Gear when you've got Harry's Garage.
Me, definitely.
Top gear had its day years ago.
Me, well maybe not all of Top Gear, but wouldn't want to go without Chris Harris
I dont know about you guys, but. Dont you think that "The Grand Tour" is trying too hard? I mean, TG was funny like spontaneous, while TGT feels too scripted, at least in my opinion
@@jamdc2000 yes, exactly what I think. Way to Americanised and scripted now
"it's a very usable car, we would not have done what we've done today in the CGT or any of the other mid engine cars" - Harry, the one who took a Testarossa to the Sahara
Well the testarossa is a gt moreso than a sports car. I suppose he meant mid engined sports cars
Going on this sort of tour a 3.5 3 series estate would fit the bill.
Can we just give a nod to Harrys Wife for all her hard work with the camera?
Inadvertantly leaks the title for the new channel ...
well done maam
Just shows Harry is top of his game when it comes to this you tube gig.
I doubt people ever say so but please send along my thanks to your wife for her excellent filming. I always enjoy your videos and I greatly enjoyed the scenery in this one. It's your style that keeps me coming back, relaxed and genuine like a favorite uncle. Best wishes and I hope the whole trip was a treat for you both. Looking forward to all your future videos.
Do wonder if Mrs M ever gets left behind?
Favourite uncle is what Harry is. Couldn’t find any better words
Damn sight better than when the young lad is behind the camera... 🙄
well said!
@Mr Ed Still not enough. 😇😉
I still fondly remember the Top Gear SLR Challenge to Oslo challenge and I can't believe it's been summer of '05 since that first aired. It's nice to revisit this magnificent car on another high-mile journey with Harry.
I remember it was broadcast the night before the terrorist bombings on the tube and bus in London.
"Driving, man! A lot!" - Clarkson
Yeah, remember that. Time flies......I turned 19 that year.
"Peddle to the metal"
Top Gear was just magic in those days.
New cool cars, and places i've never seen and probably never will.
Harry is the best, no motor Journo cliches, gives his views straight and is steeped in experience and is wise, entertaining and instructive for all that. It’s great to ride along with Harry and Mrs Harry on these road trips.
14:52 With a car that expensive, I'd be more worried about whether the cars either side have enough space to open their doors! 😬
I fell in love with that sound when Clarkson first reviewed it. My opinion has not changed. One of the great sounds.
Mrs M really is a star letting you hoon the SLR like that with her on the right side of the car!
Those new design wheels look dreadful. Look like something you'd pick up in Halfords! The original turbine wheels were stunning and suited the car much better
Fact this wheels I rare to find even rare than 722 edition wheels I believe this wheels almost forgetting I see this from gran Turismo PSP I believe the spec wheels is option wheels because original when SLR production at spec room I see this wheels and others wheels that u found often at SLR ... I kinda wonder why this wheels not a lot people interesting because is look better suit SLR well... Basically this wheels already out as option back this cars was new
Couldn't agree more! Original wheels looked waaaay cooler
Harry’s pain when discussing the Zonda appreciation is perfect
Yeah it's gotta hurt when he thinks about it
I don't think he is that bothered otherwise he wouldn't have mentioned it.
That noise, oh that noise. As someone once said "Like the God of Thunder gargling with nails".
Great video, Harry and great photography, Mrs Metcalfe. Thank you both.
The Devil gargling cherry bombs.
I’m sure clarkson used that to describe the koenigsegg cxx, probably just pips this for sound…. Only just mind you
Harry you're a true gentleman paying an extra pound for your wife not to listen to you! Great video
I would pay twice that not have to listen to my wife....gladly!
@@TermlessHGW 😂😂
@@TermlessHGW Well, that's a choice many make. Divorce generally does indeed cost twice as much!
16:25 that VW which was over the white line nearly had the most expensive scrape of its life 🤣
@Leroy Brown Me too!! I thought "holy cr@p!"
12.16 - another cretin coming round a corner on the wrong side of the road. Why do people do that?
Their insurance company:
"You hit a WHAT?!?!"😂
The paint alone is worth more than 90% of cars in that parking lot.
Well, it's debateable if it's worth more. Certainly cost more, but worth more?
Isn't it just Mercedes Brilliant Blue, typically a £650 upgrade....?!
@@wolfiestreet6899 Yeah it's the price when they're building the car new but to change an already built cars paint requires it to be stripped back to a bare shell again, that's where the cost is.. labour
The road trip format is wonderful! ‘Relaxing’ isn’t a word I commonly associate with supercar videos but you’ve done it.
Having cycled all these passes, I was not at all surprised to hear you bailed on Wrynose/Hardnott! Well done for Kirkstone/the Struggle though!! Thank you for bringing this car to my neck of the woods, this is a hero car of my childhood and it’s so fantastic that people like you get the chance to use them. I only wish I got to see it! Thank you Harry, you’ve made my week yet again!
I still cycle all these passes.... albeit virtually on my winter training system. There are indeed some very abrupt gradients....
Buy a car mate it's easier
Back in 1988 my old Mini struggled to get up the Hardknot and Wrynose but unlike the MSO it made it. Wouldn't fancy going up, or down, on a push bike.
I took a huge Peugeot 5008 7-seater over both passes in filthy weather back in 2019 - no problem! 😏
Better than the first time I tried that 40 years ago in my Vauxhall Chevette with 4 passengers and the brakes caught fire on the way down 😁
In the Lakes they still go by horse and cart.
When he said “56 THOUSAND” for the paint I almost choked. “Wait what?? 56
Hundred you mean??” I had to scroll back and see the chart. How can that be justified? Daaaamn!
Ludicrous
MSO= legalized robbery
it's a big car.
@@johnj.baranski6553 lots of paint needed
I thought the same, when Harry lifts the hood, you realise it is an engine out and back to frame situation to do a colour change. All that for a 2003 car, I would rather spend 56K on a later AMG V8 saloon.
this looks so much better than modern mercedes cars.
Perfect car for a 1000 mile road trip. It's also nice not having a stupid screen in the car.
Ye
The whole car is stupid
@@Dave.S.TT600 it's pretty good
@@dragospahontu Dude, it's a disaster. UGLY. Not a sports car, not a GT..What is it? apart from very NOT Good Looking?
@@Dave.S.TT600 I'd buy it for the looks and the engine alone. You can fix the suspension with the aftermarket and make it more comfortable.
Of course Harry gets given an SLR MSO 😂 brilliant work
The wheels look very dated. The original SLR wheels were gorgeous.
The wheels they picked don't even have a German look to them. They are almost generic tuner wheels from the 2000s. You can put aftermarket German wheels on a Japanese car and it looks pretty good, you can't go the other way around.
I'm positive these were availabe on the original SLR back in the day. Seem to remember them being fitted to the car Richard Hammond drove on Top Gear. Remembered thinking to myself "why on earth would you pick those wheels over the turbine design?". I think MSO just stamped their logo onto these original Mercedes wheels rather than having them made. Can't see why they'd go to the trouble of making new lightweight versions of the less desirable wheel design. Makes sense that these were the lighter option wheel though, as there's simply less material there compared to the turbine. I think I could live with extra 2kg weight personally.
The turbine wheels were factory option, the five spokers you see here are actually the quite like the original ones
@@iolithblue On the original cars, the five-spokes were 18' while the turbines were 19'. You could also get 10-spokes as an option later on.
@@iolithblue Look at 6:46 those where the SLR first rims and were the best since they need to cool those massive brakes.. so, the rims pattern from one side should not be used in the opposite side because will not cool the brakes efficiently, so yeah.. these new rims are lighter by 2 pounds but are not as efficient for the braking system..
I have a new appreciation for Mrs. Harry's Garage. Loving what she's been doing behind the camera for all those drive-bys
I could listen to this sound all day long, every day of the week.
You should have said you were coming up here. Harry, I'd have put the kettle on!
When I saw you turn up towards Wrynose and Hardknott, I thought you were being a bit brave in that SLR. Wise choice to bail. I worked for a summer at the Motor Museum a few years ago - worth a visit.
I like going over the Hardnott pass. You can't go very fast and if it's busy it's a pita but be on a quiet day it's ace.
I believe this color is known as “XP green.” MSO did a 675LT in a similar spec and these are both homages to the F1GT. The wheels are part of this as well
Between those and the silver f1gt they are some of my favourite cars of all time, so timeless
Looks like standard merc brilliant blue.
The level of trust in Mr Metcalfe in allowing him to borrow this special car is something else. Obviously well justified. He’s that rare person: a petrol head through & through, a very capable driver and used to driving four wheeled performance vehicles of all kinds (& some off road bikes, too), plus a highly engaging and knowledgeable motoring journalist.
Finally, though he is, I suppose, retired from his previous, commercial career, he’s got that boyish go get it attitude, with knobs on.
Let’s imagine ourselves in a similar position. How many of us could safely drive this extraordinary SLR, yet do so in a spirited fashion? Left hand drive, sitting almost over the rear axle, monster torque, electrically modulated brakes & an automatic transmission slow by modern standards.
Thanks to the Metcalfe’s for bringing us along!
For a twenty year old car, to me, it doesn’t look at all dated. The paint is lickable! While the interior tan leather and suede is a little OTT for me, and my word, you don’t need to continually ask yourself what kind of engine you’re sitting behind. It would be tiring, that exhaust note. I’d have to have it equipped with a switchable exhaust, or it’d do my head it with that drone on faster roads.
But almost anywhere you go, it turns heads and you just cannot ignore it, in any company.
I’m a long way shy of every being able to afford one, but I confess to perusing advertisements for SL55s!
Still in my opinion the best sounding car ever made. The sound is so mean and brutal.
Cmon mate , Maserati Gran Turismo is also one of the best 😭
Brutal but not vulgar ☝️
And what would be your oppinion about Carrera gt's V10 sound?
I'd say SLS AMG is much meaner and just overall better sounding.
@@thunderrun1528 hmm let's establish this ,
V8 - Maserati GT
V10 - Carrera GT
V12 - SLR? or a Ferrari
god i love that colour! Loving the in car footage, that thing absolutely flies in 2nd and 3rd.
That stereos never been used, the soundtrack from this monster is all you need ❤️
Very nice color, couldn't be anymore spectacular.
Harry I recommend you take a road trip to Sweden this year. A 7km Swedish nordschleife has just opened on the Island off Gotland. Could be quite an interesting trip.
Great info, I will check it out, thanks.
Good tip!
Yes, Gotland Ring (also involves a ferry-ride😉)
Beautiful car, color and wheels. 5 spokes are hard to beat.
I'm not sure about the wheels, I think for that price they could of been a bit more fancy.but what do I know 🤔 👍
It's great when you meet a viewer who gives you a heads-up on the road ahead. Teamwork
An amazing car. It doesn’t matter that it’s a bit outdated…it’s all about the look that outclass most supercars of nowadays.
Oh boy, have I missed the roadtrips.
Thanks for bringing the legend back 😢😢😢
One of the only you tubers with the balls to face the camera foward! !! Thats why HARRY IS THE GOAT 😆😆😆😆
One of my favourite engine sounds of all time. Regardless of how bad a day you are having, that sound can not possibly fail to make you feel a bit better. Biblical. That’s reason alone to buy one 😀
I also like it a lot - a V8 with a true dual exhaust. No crossovers. The G63 of the same period has similar.
I recently did it on my CLS500 and love it.
I prefer the quietest engine possible. I don't know how anyone could stand this on a long trip. Conversation with passengers would be impossible.
hhm sounds a but wheezey and plap plappy to me, Lamborghini Diablo best sounding engine ever IMO
That sound is incredible! I wonder why MSO wouldn't swap the gearbox for something modern that's fast-shifting and can handle the torque? Or upgrade the infotainment? Still, what an iconic car. Hard to believe it's nearly 20 years old
Agreed. The modification they've made are good but not great. Could be better as you said. Especially the transmission.
@@imadtanouticonta could even have gone manual... but above all, why keep the electric braking system instead of converting to a conventional hydraulic setup?
Considering they charged £56k for painting it, I hate to think how much a gearbox change would cost.
Plot twist: the gearbox is fine, a dual-clutch to me isn't smooth like a torque converter auto. If Stig can get it around TG track very smoothly and quickly, what's wrong with it then?
My toes curled when I saw Harry attempting 'The Struggle' in that expensive - and very wide - car, so very happy to see him aborting the Wrynose/Hardknottpass run. Thank goodness!
Yep, no shame in a go-around situation.
I spent a weekend with an SLR. It's a lovely car. Really easy to live with, unless you have to park in a small space.
"lovely little MR2" 🤗 feeling blessed when Harry compliments a car I also own. Glad the fan warned you about that road. Yet another epic road trip in a stunning piece of engineering. Thanks Harry 👍🏽
Woah... the roadtrip that dreams are made of! So glad to see the SLR get some quality airtime. Great stuff as usual Harry, glad you're bringing us along!
Had the joy of driving a few of these over the years, the overriding memory is of the supercharger whine, it overshadows every other noise in the car, mesmerising
Hugely entertaining trip in the SLR to the beautiful Lake District.
What a wise decision to bail on the Hardknott Pass. We took 3 Porkers and an Aston Vantage over it last year and highly buttock clenching it was too, with several splitter scrunching moments. In a car like that precious SLR??? Nooooo 😱
That combination of bass and supercharger whine is so tuneful. One of the best exhaust/engine note ever.
Baritone and Soprano at the same time.
Your road-trip videos are by far my favorite.
Yes, love it when car channels take the cars out for road trips! Way more interesting than seeing them getting whipped around a track! 👌
(Also goodness me, what a gorgeous color)
The AMG 55 motor is a wonderful creation, one of the best motors created by them and the 5 speed automatic transmission is just perfect!
loved it. Was really suprised to see you do “the struggle” as that’s what i did earlier this year in my 1975 spitfire and thought it was not the best of ideas, haha.
The constant thumping of the engine and induction sound it’s just addictive . That V8 it’s glorious make me want one moreover than other modern cars. BIG THANKS HARRY, I’m an absolute fan of your channel and specially the trips . So enjoyable . So educational . Makes me happy .
Beautiful to see one not in Silver or Black '
Stunning Colour
Kudos to your wife for helping film this. She's quite the trooper!
16:25 whoa whoa WHOA! Jazuss, what the WHAT!? With a twitch of the wheel and not a mention - You're a legend, Harry!
MX-5 is just about the perfect size for Lake District.
I'd agree, drove through yesterday on the way home in convertible mode in my SC430, too wide going up the struggle
Colnago C64
14:56 nice side effect of having those doors being able to park in tight gaps, obvious concern is how careful/careless other owners will be that you may park close to. Great video, enjoyed the trip.
So glad Harry is back out taking trips. Those are my favorite videos. Makes me want to go out and drive every time
That area is really beautiful, was there 2 years ago and the museum was great.
Helpful little bit of consumer advice: SLRs windshield wipers are quite good! Great to see you back at roadtrips, those are your best videos. And a big thank you to mrs M. for putting up with your shenanigans and enabling us to see some of it by film!
It's nice up here in the lakes. Infrastructure isn't the best mind 😂. better on the bike. We had a ride out to Keswick this morning. Very busy. Good video. What a machine. What a sound. Thank you
So nice of Harry to take us along on his weekend trip. I enjoy these far too much! The SLR is a total missile!
What a genuinely stunning looking car. A wonderful collaboration between Merc and McLaren. And that noise is just phenomenal, what a machine.
Not going to tour the Lake District in a car? Come on, Harry, your Elan or Fulvia would be ideal transport!
One of the best car channels out there. I mean who goes to the middle of nowhere with the cool supercar?! Harry does! Thanks, Harry for the great content over the years

Great fun, Harry - thank you! I imagined the trip would be one long series of sprints between scenic petrol stations... 🤭
Aren’t we all glad that we didn’t waste our fantasy money on an SLR when they first came out....I’m gutted though that I never bought a Zonda...🤣
Gordon Murray talking to Chris Harris on Harris' podcast shows how much he hated this car. Merc demanding things he simply didn't want to do. Great, great episode of that podcast. Had he got his way, this car would have been worth much more today.
@@invisiblekid99 Exactly why it was such a confusing car to begin with (trying to make it more hardcore with the 722 and Stirling Moss editions seemed to worsen the problem from what I understand). I remember when it first came out and it was in a world with the Zonda, Carrera GT, Enzo, MC12 & the Koenigsegg CC8S. The SLR really looked out of place and was the result of two parties fighting over what direction to go. Carbon tub, yet has a 5-speed auto gearbox and silver painted plastic air vents (1700kg for you). No wonder it never sold as well as hoped.
Having said that, I can see the appeal of the standard SLR Roadster; looked like it was more successful as a GT cruiser.
I realized that after 3 years of watching this channel the reason why I love these videos so much is that my mother looks exactly like Harry.
Came from Germany, visited the motor museum with the kids. - great day out!
I really like the road trip format for this review, & love the beautiful countryside, geology & history of the Lake District. The car wasn't too bad either, but over £50,000 for the paint alone, thats sheer madness! Makes me wonder how much it would cost to service/ maintain this supercar?!
Ah, finally something to do this Sunday!
Wow! A geologist and a car guy in the same time👍🏻

Your SLR road trip put a smile on my face for 39 minutes. Love your car impressions.
These things sound dirty in all the right ways. I much prefer the turbine wheels but that's just a matter of opinion I suppose. I also think they have aged really well.
Well spoken - totally agree
Great video Mr M. I've never been a fan of this car but loved the video. As a teen I youth hostelled in the Lakes and cycled over the Hardknott and Wrynose passes and really must go back as I didn't remember them being so narrow. Thanks for evoking a fond memory from 30+ years ago alongside interesting V8 content!
Great tour. You feel so satisfied completing Wrynose & Hardknott passes until the Mountain Goat minibus passes you the other way.
Lord, I love the Lakes...never tire of them. Shame you couldn’t take it up Hardknott, but the SLR would chew it up and spit it out...our bangers in the 70’s had a deficit of torque (or anything else), and cooked themselves going over. Thrilling, with great views.
Funnily enough, in the years we’ve been going to the Lakes, we’ve never gone to the museum. This year we will.
It's a fab museum well worth a visit if you are in the area 👍

@@alexbrown1995 Yeah but he did say some owners leave them for 3 years between servicing. That and you can pretty much daily drive this SLR try that with any Ferrari or Lamborghini from this generation probably cost the same over 3 years if not more.

Loved seeing all these familiar places, I grew up in the Lakes. You probably can get that over Hardknott and Wrynose, but you wouldn't enjoy it. Last time I went that way I used an AUDI S6 (C6), it picked a back wheel up round all the hairpins and tied the four wheel drive system in knots.
