  • Sega Technical Institute was a unique division of Sega developers and visionaries, tasked with bringing out new software for Sega's consoles. They wouldn't be around for long, but they did create some memorable games in their short and storied run.

    Episode Notes:
    1. The story of Sonic Xtreme is brutal. You should look it up and read just how bad things were mishandled and just how petty some of the squabbling was.
    2. Greendog is included on the off chance I missed something somewhere about its development. Interactive Designs definitely did the work, I'm just not sure what STI had to do with it.
    3. Games captured via the Mega SG.
    4. STI had a number of cancelled projects thanks to their Sonic endeavors. Sonic took priority over everything.
    5. Yuji Naka was famously difficult to get along with. So vindictive was this dude, he actually threatened to quit Sega if STI was allowed to use the Nights engine for Sonic Xtreme. The fate of the company be damned.
    6. Sonic Spinball is without question STI's weakest game IMO. I understand people love it, but man I couldn't stand it.

Yeah very appreciated and happy to see other Sega focused channels now that im really digging into their deeper library and history. More popular gaming history/discussion channels tend to be way too nintendo centric, and i get why but it's tiring and a disservice to the great work of these other companies throughout the years. Now to look for some more channels that dive deeper into Capcom focus lol

Altima I disagree, this the one and only exception that I know of where Gems actually shines. The heavy grungy 90s guitar works perfectly as it is and I wouldn't prefer any other way. As for Sonic, I always felt that the stage in Sonic Jam was actually a good starting point for building a 3D Sonic game for the system. Great video! I started at STI as an environment and character artist just as they were starting work on Kid Chameleon. It was a great place to work and a group of very talented people… until it wasn’t. After the teams split things got weird. STI had several games that, had they been able to finish them, could have gone on to be A+ titles; ie Kinetic/Jester, Astropede, Spinny & Spike. By the time I left in 1995 the writing was on the wall that STI’s future was seriously in doubt. (And it was definitely no longer an enjoyable place to work)

I really like Sonic Spinball, also folks forget it launched at $30. I"m so glad Sonic 3 wasn't isometric, I never was very good at those kind of games :). Also I don't think Jackson's legal problems were the issue, he didn't like the Genesis' sound chip.

Hi Lord! I love your channel! Have a question that has been in my mind for some time. In Comix Zone, I rememeber the shadows were not linear when I played the first time in a Sega Genesis MK II, but now i see everywhere these linear shadows, eve in the Sega Genesis for Steam. This is an effect that was lost in the newer Genesis models or I´m just having a Mandela effect?

Sonic X-Treme is a game that makes me dream. More like a fever dream.
Granted, if it actually went out, i bet it wouldn't be as memorable as it is from those strange concept video. After all, the concept is a bit like Bugs but with a better physical engine and presentation... And a funky camera.
... But i have a weird obsession with "how developpers tried to make 3D plateformer before Mario 64 came out" and Sonic X-treme is like a window to a world that will never be.

I feel like Sonic Spinball had a lot of potential, and could have made a solid spin-off series for Sonic. If it wasn't rushed in 3 months, it could have had more levels and more fluid gameplay. If you turn the game speed on in options to fast, it actually makes it a bit better. This should have been the default speed.

I think Comix Zone can be played and beaten without alot of mandatory damage but it does take a few playthroughs to learn the level design. There are bombs that can be torn from the wall from your rat, and item planning and seeking the best route is strongly encouraged. At first it seems like that but with time I was able to avoid alot of damage that at first seemed mandatory, very tough game, and the only Gems soundtrack that is fantastic imo.

Something I always wondered with Dick Tracy for the Genesis. In the instructions, it says "The Kidd" can be found, and he can give you more health during the game. Problem is, he isn't in the game. Possibly the developers removed him or he was never finished? Is he in the Master System version?
