    There is some cool information about Zillion: The anime was on TV here in Brazil and TecyToy made a big AD campaing about it, which made them to sell A LOT of this toy, way more than Sega sold in Japan itself. This is what give the confidence for Sega to give the license to TecToy and the rest is history :)

    • @bananonymouslastname5693
      @bananonymouslastname5693 Před 4 lety +5

      So, Zillion was a laser tag-like toy first. The anime was made as an advertising tie-in, and the video games were made based on the anime. The toy mold was used for the Light Phaser, which oddly wasn't used with the Zillion video games.
      The first Zillion is nothing like Metroid, though. It's a straight-up Impossible Mission clone. I prefer Zillion II, which people trash, but is a pretty solid run 'n gun.

    I always applaud a CZcams creator that makes content for the Master System. It is always going to be an extra special system for me, and for the new collector, it is a console that keeps on giving. Want sound that is near 16-bit, get an FM mod. Want imports with no region lockout, you've got it. Want a system that looks like nothing else out there, got that too. Want great sprite art, that is there in spades.

    An interesting fact is that the MS was never "popular" in Brazil in the sense that every body loved it. It was popular because it was cheap(er) and any shop that sold a vacuum cleaner or a toaster would also sell TecToy stuff. Most people did not love it that much, and from what I remember from my childhood, everyone really wanted a Nintendo (clone), but very few people had access to one up until early 90s. In my experience growing up in the late 80s, and remembering my friends and collective opinion, the "Master" (as it was known the) was not that desired at all, and it was common to witness or even say "ugh a Master?!" back then when at another kid's house. Hope you dig the personal insight of my own memories of the thing back in late 80s early 90s in southern Brazil.

      @ostiariusalpha Před 4 lety

      Any of the Wonder Boy series are totally worth playing on the SMS. Renegade is an excellent beat 'em up, and Vigilante or the Streets of Rage ports are also decent. Chuck Rock II is a really good platformer, as are several of the Disney games (Aladdin, Castle of Illusion, and Land of Illusion); the while Cool Spot and the Asterix series of platformers are okay. Amongst horizontal run-and-gun games, The NewZealand Story is a bit cutesy, but also immensely fun; RoboCop vs The Terminator and Alien³ are good too. Rambo: First Blood, Part II is about as good as an 8-bit overhead run-and-gun gets, with Time Soldiers being very much above average; The Ninja is an early game, it can be an acquired taste though. For shmups, the R-Type port is so good, it almost justifies buying the SMS all by itself, definitely would have been a killer app for the console if the SMS hadn't been buried by Nintendo's craftiness and Sega's inept marketing. The Fantasy Zone series, the Power Strike series, and Sagaia are all great shmups as well; the Forgotten Worlds port is respectable. Bonanza Bros and Gain Ground are also on the Genesis/MD, but their gameplay more naturally fits the SMS; the port of Paperboy also fits like a glove on the Master System. Besides the quality racing on OutRun and Hang-On, the port of Micro Machines is nearly as good as the 16-bit versions; Buggy Run is worth playing too.

    Two things:
    1- Give us Part 2 and 3 of this video! I really enjoyed seeing two of my favorites there: Zillion and Asterix. By the way, Asterix had an interesting presence in Brazil. You could buy the comics at newsstands and bookshops in the 80s and 90s.
    2- I'm a Brazilian and I actually had a Master System back in the 80s and 90s. It came with Safari Hunt and Hang On (no cart needed). I went on to buy many other titles, such as California Games, Alex Kidd, Shinobi, Sonic, Wanted, Gangster Town and so on. Even back then I could see its flaws (no pause button on the controller! What?!?). It was very popular in Brazil, but the licensed Nintendo stuff was also coming in hard when we got to the 90s. They were like the cool new kid at school. I remember playing Zelda 2, Mario 3, Batman, and Ninja Gaiden and being blown away by those games.

    Can't believe what a hidden gem this little master system was! I'm wondering why all those years we Americans always had Nintendo everywhere, and these great looking colorful fast and dynamic looking games never surfaced??

      I was the only kid in my whole school that had a Master System. Everyone else had the NES, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Loved this console, and it was technically superior to the NES too, but Nintendo had a strangle hold on all the third party licenses for games, so the Master System could not compete with it head to head in the USA. That’s really what led to it’s downfall.

    Outrun was THE game, that made me buy my first home console, the game that made me interested in, and started collecting games in general, and the game that made me a huge SEGA fan until this day. Outrun, Virtua Racing, Daytona, Sega Rally, Sega Touring Cars, Sega Rally 2. The golden age of video games imo.

    I never spent much time on the platform. It is a shame and I should actually take the time to do it. If you ever need any help with Tectoy's releases in Brazil just let me know. I will be more than glad to help out so more English speaking folks can enjoy the games that were only released here. Thank you for yet another awesome video!

    Favorite games on SMS were: Black Belt, Double Dragon, Shinobi, Astro Warrior, and Choplifter. This was my first gaming system and I have fond memories of playing those games. The music in Black Belt is so amazing and still pops into my head from time to time.

    Psycho Fox was one of my favourite games in my childhood. Played it for hours and hours :) Play more often with the tiger or monkey, they are easier to handle. In stage 1-3 (near the end) you can punch "open" a cloud in order take a sneak peek into the later stages ;). Take also a look at Alex Kidd in Miracle World 2 (and even part 3 soon)!

    Spell Caster is an **heavily** edited and altered game based on the manga and anime series Ku-Jyaku-Oh (the Peakock(Phoenix) King, about a Japanese Buddhist Monk that used Shinto and Hindu Magic to hunt and slay demons. When Sega of America localized the game, a lot of the original storyline was altered, along with changing the sprite of the main character and removing all references to Buddhism, Shinto, and Hindu mysticism also removed, even calling a Yakisoba food stand as having "Spaghetti".
    Zillion is based on the anime series Red Photon Bullet: ZILLION and the light phaser is based on the Zillion pistol and the Zillion Laser Tag set, the pistol was re-purposed as the the Light Phaser. Art design and conceptual design elements of the anime was a huge influence on Sega's Phantasy Star, and the Fantasy Zone robo-ship Opa Opa is a mascot character in the series.
    Cyborg Hunter had it's storyline and all the character names drastically altered from the original Sonic Soldier Borg-Man (as in (Cy)borg-Man not "borgmen" ) game. It's a great anime series, heavily inspired by the live action Japanese super hero shows of the Super Sentai genre
    Both the Zillion anime series and Sonic Soldier Borg Man were co-founded by Sega Enterprises, so it makes sense they would make action-adventure games based on those anime shows
    here's what Sonic Soldier Borg-Man was like... it was pretty kick ass...
