We’re getting closer to Godzilla’s Revenge.
Much closer. Considering Mothra & King Ghidorah were right around the corner, this was arguably the biggest stinker before Godzilla's Revenge.

Honestly Brandon needs guilted to get to that sooner than later, he really shouldn't want that to be the LAST Godzilla movie he does. Talk about a weak send off, like ending a party by being punched in the dick by a drunk kangaroo.

Remember reading about Willis O’Brien being screwed over with this film. It took a toll on his health and died soon after. Damn shame he deserved better.
He should've been on the staff for this film. What they did to him was a disgrace.
Actually, his health had begun to decline several years earlier, both from losing projects to his protege, Ray Harryhausen, and to Hollywood producers believing him to be past his prime. The latter has some value, as he often supervised productions and let others, like Pete Peterson and Harryhausen, do most of the animation work, such as with 1949's "Mighty Joe Young."
Later productions either never developed or were low-budget affairs that gave him little to do. For "Behemoth, the Sea Monster," budget cuts forced him to use a wooden model that bobbed in the water and could not move its neck (see the infamous ferry scene). In "The Black Scorpion," the special effects budget ran out and several scenes of the scorpion remain as see-through matte shots. Also, Irwin Allen hired O'Brien but opted to go for the lazy method of gluing horns on lizards to pass as dinosaurs.
Then, in 1956, O'Brien wrote the treatment for "The Beast From Hollow Mountain" and sold the idea to his "good" friend Edward Nassour, who promised to hire O'Brien as animator. Nassour promptly took the idea, reworked it, hired another animator and actually barred O'Brien from the set.
As for "King Kong vs. Godzilla," Toho's involvement meant guys in rubber suits, so there would have been little to no room for O'Brien's involvement. Also, O'Brien had already suffered several minor heart attacks, was 76 years old and no one was sure he could have even handled the rigors of doing a major motion picture.
Hence when I said it took a toll on him. He literally died months later, he was quite the tragic figure. His children were murdered by his wife, he struggled financially and got shafted on something he helped create. Remember Kong is as much his as it was Coopers. Either way it is a damn shame.

Fun fact about the scene where Godzilla first attacked “Japan”… In the Japanese version, that island is NOT Japan. it’s an island that’s part of RUSSIAN territory.
I had suspected as much, given that I vaguely remember coming across that tidbit of information somewhere. Plus the tanks have red stars if I remember right...
I just checked. In fact, there is a red star on the Sherman tanks XD

Regardless a weird bit of continuity or non continuity of world events in the Godzilla universe. Thank you for noticing. Myself I never did till it was pointed out.

@@gabrielboorom6196 Actually, the original Japanese line is similar, since the guy only cares about his television ratings and Godzilla returning is causing him to lose ratings, which is why he wanted Kong. The Japanese version has a pretty big take that to television throughout the film.

Oh yeah. I've sat through the entire Japanese version. There was some message about commercialism & unearned praise that seemed to get lost in the translation for American audiences.

I prefer the Japanese version myself. I don’t mind the dubbing but the replacing of Akira Ifukube’s magnificent soundtrack for Universal monster movie stock music just distracted me too much even as a kid. And that’s including the extra scenes shoehorned in.
I grew up with the American version and only saw the japanese version for the first time about a year ago. I appreciate the satire more in the japanese version.
Not only that but some American versions of the films, Varan for example, they go and change so much of it.
@@dylangrant102 Way too much. Ifukube’s music fits as intended. I cannot take seriously the shoving in of random Hollywood stock music because none of them ever fits. Just dub the voices and leave it at that. Only time music replacement ever worked for me was in friggin Yu-Gi-Oh! At least in that anime the new music fit the tone.

Funny story, when Godzilla vs Kingkong was shown in Mexico, it was the original japanese version, just redubed in Mexico, and it was shown in a Double Feature with Grease 2 XD

I couldn't help but be stupified by the use of The Creature From The Black Lagoon for some of the fight scenes.
Yes, it is a good score, probably Ifukube's best.
Hans Salter, whose music got ground into filler music for this movie, was no sloucher when it came to composition. He was a student of Alban Berg, a prominent composer of the so-called Second Viennese School, which drifted away from conventional tonality, and which accounts for some of the "horror music" sound of old Hollywood. So yeah, Salter was disrespected in a way as well, and probably didn't see a dime from its usage here.
Of course, the removal of Ifukube's score is criminal for sure. I don't understand, for example, why they omitted the music from G's rampage at the military base. As we all know, hearing one of Godzilla's motifs makes his scenes more thrilling. But hey I guess the honchos at Universal knew best, not knowing the opprobrium they would receive from dedicated fans of the massive catalog of kaiju movies nearly 60 years (and counting) later. Short-term gain, long-term disrespect...
The original Japanese movie was more like a crazy office comedy -- or "salaryman comedy" as they're called in Japan -- where all the jokes hinge on the still-rather feudal culture of the Japanese workplace: i.e., a cluelessly incompetent boss makes ridiculous or impossible demands, and the employees are morally/professionally obliged to do their best anyway. There was some comedy gold along these lines in the original, but the American distributors evidently felt it wouldn't translate...

And the naval vessel that tried to stop them? In Japan, they were not trying to stop them - they were bureaucrats, seeking fees and payments for permits and licenses for Kong's passage. Also, Mister Tako (Taco?) had a superior as dismissive of him as he was of the others. It's not quite as different as G Raids Again Vs. Gigantis, but it comes close.

I mean, cultural specifics aside, it probably would have translated at a general level here. And at least in recent years, Office Space, Dilbert (although bleh to Scott Adams), and, well, The Office have mined the related office dynamics for comedy gold. Mad Men was more understated and sardonic, though.

It's so weird and jarring that the move has continuity with the previous movies but the american scenes insist this is the first time Godzilla has appeared.

As a kid, I always took the "The world is shocked to discover giant monsters" as a sort of general statement on the world. Like "In recent years, the world has been shocked to find that giant monsters exist"....

The movie really needed a giant Raymond Burr dressed as a referee.
So the pilots see Godzilla on the Iceberg, they say his name (which means that they know him) and then the journalist says that "the world is stunned to discover that prehistoric creatures exist... " 😆
When I saw this for the first time as an 8 year old budding kaiju fan that made no sense to me either.
Maybe lots of people thought the previous Godzilla attacks were hoaxes.
The saddest part of the story behind the movie is it directly contributed to Willis O'Brien's death, because when he found out he became so angry and depressed that he lost the will to live and just withered away until ill health took him.
You know it's going to be a good video when it's a two-parter.

This movie isn't as silly as you think, the American cut added things like "my corns" in there for comedic reasons.
America's not the one who added the cigar-party, or the CEO taking bets on who'll win the first battle.
I saw the Japanese version of KKvG, and it seemed to be sillier with the actors. Honestly, that version really did not impress me.

10:23 Sweet! Several years ago, I took my son and his "then" girlfriend to a Baby Metal concert in Charlotte. It was a crazy concert. Those three Japanese girls were all over the stage...crazy lighting...sort of like Muse on Meth with a touch of PCP for good measure.
This was the first Godzilla film i ever saw. i was about 5 years old

More importantly, the superior Japanese version is on the Criterion Collection. It's the only legal way to watch it in the West.
The main actors were actually well-known Japanese comedians. "Mister Tako" has been described as the Charlie Chaplain of Japan.
Technically this is the SECOND American Godzilla film as "Godzilla Raids Again" was releasrd as "Gigantis the Fire Monster".

I know a lot of people have only seen the American version, but I can't do that with most Godzilla movies. I just can't. So I imported the Japanese version. Pretty good actually!
I don't know why in the bloody blue hell anyone would want to watch the American cut, English dubbed version of ANY of the Godzilla movies. 9 out of 10 times they completely butcher and bastardize the movie.

The only American version I am ok with watching is King of the Monsters. I of course prefer the original Japanese version, but I am glad that the Criterion blu ray has it included on the disc also
Man, we butchered the movie something fierce when we brought it over. So much story and characterization thrown out because they wanted to minimize the amount of Japan in this Japanese movie, along with throwing out all of Ifukube's score. I'd argue it's worse than what happened with "Godzilla's Counterattack".

You know what I didn't realize I appreciated until watching these old Kaiju films? Being able to SEE the monsters! Seriously, everything is now in clouds, at night, underwater, during a hurricane, and obscured by smoke.

Brandon finally realized that BABYMETAL makes EVERYTHING better?
Not only had Godzilla attacked twice, there was also Anguirus, Rodan, Moguera, Varan, the H-Man, the Telegian, the Human Vapor, Mothra, Maguma and the Gorath asteroid.
Fun Fact: One of the characters spinning a lizard in a grassy place ends up a again in GVK where Kong (The Main Character) spins one of two warbats the same way.
And that lizard was possibly the inspiration for GvK'stake on the Foetodon.
I have the original. This movie looks good. Especially the special effects.
The original is really fun. I like it. Also, I'm still in the camp of Godzilla winning

I watched a lot of these movies back in the 70’s, when they were on TV shows like Creature Features. I still believe the Mothra scene (not sure what movie) where they tiny women were singing to Mothra to wake it, to be the most surreal.

Was watching this movie with a bunch of people in a theatre outside of Atlanta, and when they were on the ship I pointed at the screen and yelled out, "Look, it's Japanese Gilligan!" We all had a good laugh over that one. I also had to make the Tentacle Monster joke ... Well done, Brandon.
After this film Mothra vs. Godzilla 1964 also has continuity with this film as well with godzilla entrance

Out of all the channels I'm subscribed to this show always has had a certain quality to it that I genuinely enjoy hell I think I've been subscribed ever since the mystics in Bali review and the show just keeps staying great which is refreshing considering most shows get worse overtime I think it's rather impressive!.
