Battleship: The Blockbuster Attempt That Sunk Itself

  • In 2012 Hasbro got greedy and attempted to plague audiences world-wide with adaptations of their board games. The first try was Battleship. An idea that was already not great, with aliens slapped on for good measure.
Ten years later, I felt like talking about it.

There is an Asylum knockoff of this film that's actually just plain about a battleship, because The Asylum knows that a battleship is a cooler thing to make a movie about than the board game Battleship. Their main character is also not a whiny little b'tch that still somehow has everything handed to him.
It still has naval aliens, even worse effect and a couple of other major issues, but I don't know, it might actually be the better movie of the two.

Battleship takes place in a reality where the best course of action is the one that looks the coolest; where Rule of Cool overpowers any sort of pragmatism or our idea of traditional wisdom. Harpoons and tomahawks beating the shit out of aliens
Goalkeeper ciws stopping a couple of alien rounds.

Like Cody says, the aliens are rather inconsistent when they resort to pacifism, like when they were just fine with killing side characters or collapsing a bridge full of civilians on it.
Some interpret it as destroying the bridge to prevent reinforcements or something, but in that case, they could've shown the aliens trying to scare people off the bridge or something before demolishing it. I'll have to agree with Cody that the aliens just weren't written well.

    • @erika002

Someone actually made a plausible theory about these aliens in which in this video didn't quite theorized:
They're scouts or more likely, miners, and just sent out to Earth as they were the nearest ones...well.. to Earth. They have a relatively slow FTL because the timeline moved too fast in which the movie just did not put a "5 years later or something". It's because Hopper became a Weapons Officer from being a bloke very fast in the movie. The timeline jumped a few years.
The weaponry, the "hooking" thingamajig bomb, is perfect for mining or at least meant for mining. As why they were so desperate destroying highways (to prevent getting anyone to the transmitter) while prioritizing destroying hostile humans and local US assets (getting to them), is because they don't have that much resources while working with the transmission dishes on Hawaii, which was eventually destroyed by that battleship. So much for being advanced not detecting a satellite and do course corrections, now they're struggling to get comms back as their comms ship/module flattened a part of Hong Kong.
In short, yes, they are weak, but for a reason, and the movie did not clarify it.

Ex-squid and armchair historian here. Silly as it looks at first glance, this shot has an extremely loose basis in reality. Shockwaves propagate very easily down the long and narrow passageways of a ship, and have been known to ricochet around as they do so. The shot makes it seem like this could create some kind of...weird...reversing...suction effect? Which is obviously nonsense, but shockwaves can behave in extremely unpredictable ways, and can change direction unexpectedly. Survivors accounts from HMS Hood, USS Arizona, IJN Taiho, and similar wartime disasters consistently describe that those who lived through those enormous explosions did so because of luck, including wayward shockwaves blowing them overboard when the person next to them was thrown a completely different direction. See the firsthand account of Midshipman William John Dundas for details; he was one of only three survivors from HMS Hood, a ship which embarked more than 1400 souls.
Of course, the shot in the movie would never happen in the real world because in reality the ship would be set to material condition Zebra, which would mean every available hatch would be closed and dogged, preventing shockwaves from shooting down passageways and causing massive damage, injury, and death. It's like the real navy thought about these things or something...

If this is to be believed, the aliens are there to harvest resources, that's their primary objective and follows the "Fire only of Fired upon" rules of engagement, destroying humans is the last thing they want to do unless a clear and present danger is shown. and the weapons also start to make some sense, for example the peg shells are probably mining explosives that happens to have enough power to destroy Missouri's turret 3 and kill the Sampson and Myoko, they were not dedicated Weapons, which is why the CWIS on the JPJ and Sampson killed a chunk of them. And those Shredder ball things were more precision mining equipment like our drills.

I also thought the involvement of the WW2 vets was kinda cool, even if the very concept makes me laugh out loud. Also why were they keeping live ammunition on a decommissioned battleship?
The only thing that I thought was really interesting was that the aliens were not portrayed as necessarily malevolent. Cody attributes this to poor writing which I can understand. But at the same time I thought there were hints that the aliens at least didn't go out of their way to cause unnecessary casualties. It would have been easy to write generic, Independence Day, kill all humans aliens but they didn't write them that way for some reason. I watched this during a guard shift at 0300
I was severely sleep-deprived, utterly bored, and only half-watched it, due to...well...guard duties and all that.
I liked it. No idea what sane me would think about it.

My grandpa was in the navy during ww2. He loved this movie. I still love this movie. When the old guys help at the end, brings a tear to my eye
