The seagulls thing, as far as I remember, is inspired by the fact that, at the time, Godzilla was still meant to be a mutated dinosaur. Even though it was still not a complete consensus at the time, scientists already suspected birds are dinosaurs. Godzilla being the only one of his species at the time of the series, he was possibly drawn to the possibility of being with his kin.

His kin... WTF, the evolutionary distance between modern birds and dinosaurs is like 70 MLN years, so if Godzilla would consider seagulls "his kin" then humans and chimpanzees should fuck each other on everyday basis, because by that logic they're basically the same thing. Then again this concept would fit right away with the ridiculousness of "science" in kaiju movies.

I remember my aunt bought this movie for her daughter, who LOVED Godzilla. I bought Destroy All Monsters. She watched Destroy All Monsters with me, because she wanted to see if it was better for my cousin. I guess once my cousin was 5, she realized that they killed Godzilla (in the American point of view since we never saw the Heisei Godzilla past this point and this was 2001 before most of us knew the Heisei movies existed) and basically cried all night. So we traded, which I guess my cousin wore out the Destroy All Monsters VHS... LOL. But that scream is what made her realize, Godzilla is dead (it's only in the American version too, so it's fitting, because to us, he died).

Okay, for everyone wondering what that giant bug thing was on the boat: It was a Godzilla Louse. Godzilla has parasites on him the same way all lifeforms do, but being big and radioactive means that they were similarly mutated and enlarged. When he walked by the boat (don't know how it didn't capsize) some of them just fell off and ate the crew. Most of them jumped off-ship and into the water but one stayed behind. The American version mentions that one giant louse washed up dead on a beach somewhere.

I guess living in the 80's, you saw Star Wars which was puppets, Yoda was a puppet, the Goonies, this movie was on par with them. It wasn't until later that Star Wars was given a CGI make over to look better. On top of that , the plot was pretty good, and it was basic. Man creates a monster, the monster destroys Tokyo. I love that they throw him into a volcano, and in the American point of view, kill him since this Godzilla was never seen again, until the internet. It's not perfect, but the only perfect Godzilla film was the first. And of course to have that film, the nation went through a f'n atomic bomb.

9:59 Well, actually, it depends on which version you’re watching; in the original Japanese version from 1954, they say that Godzilla is 150 feet tall because, back then, that was bigger than any building they had in Japan. However, in the American version, Godzilla is said to be over 400 feet tall, because in America, where there are huge skyscrapers, if a monster was 150 feet tall, he wouldn’t have even come up above the buildings.

I remember seeing the movie poster for this movie at the theater where we lived growing up and I remember wanting to see that movie so bad and my parents rented it when it came out on VHS and it was my first Godzilla movie and made me a fan for life. I didn’t know it back then but I was watching one of the best Godzilla films ever made. Since it was my first Godzilla movie I ever saw I didn’t care that there wasn’t a second monster for him to fight and as a kid he was probably only six or seven years old there were parts of this movie that terrified me but I still loved Godzilla in this movie. This was the film that made me bug my parents for the next few years To help me find as many Godzilla movies as I could.

    • @TheKain202

Mid-showa had a steady stream of kids watching these movies, while Final Wars was not only ignored by the general audience who were sick of monster movies released every year since 89(Godzilla went on hiatus in '95, but Gamera carried the torch in the interim, with it's own masterpiece of a trilogy), but also the actual fandom REALLY hated it at release.
The interest wasn't there and shit reviews from critics and fans alike snowballed into the one of the worst bombs the series ever saw(doesn't help that it's still the most expensive one in the series). While Toho damage controlled stating that they're just going on a 10 year hiatus, it's pretty clear that if not for the not-so-modest success of the American Reboot - they wouldn't touch the franchise again.

You see, when the first Godzilla film was released in Japan in November of 1954, audiences all over the country loved it, with lines to get in the theaters spanning blocks down the street, but the critics reviews of the film were extremely mixed with a few critics considering it to be a masterpiece like everybody today, but most of the critics back then gave it a really low rating essentially saying the same thing; that it was really weird to see a monster movie be taken so seriously.

This and biollante really set a good presidence and took a more grounded yet still scifi filled approach.

While I’ve always had somewhat mixed feelings about The whole “guy in a suit” effect that Toho uses for pretty much every version of Godzilla (for some reason the face always looks a little too derpy to me), I gotta give the ‘Heisei’ period Godzilla movies serious credit. Yeah, they all have their flaws, but they’ve also got a definite place in my heart.
The one with Godzilla and Mothra fighting an evil space Mothra was the first G-movie I ever saw. It was the REALLY early 2000’s, I was somewhere between 10 and 12, I was visiting my Aunt and she let me pick a movie from Blockbuster for us to watch. I picked that one, in all of its badly-dubbed VHS-tape glory.
Then, over a decade later, I saw Pacific Rim and Godzilla 2014 in the same week and went on a slight Kaiju movie binge for a few months. Along with a box set of Gojira and 5-6 other early G-movies, I picked up a few others from the Heisei and Millennium periods. This was all within a few months of me being legally able to buy alcohol, so I was usually buzzed while watching these and don’t remember any of them all that well. With one exception: Godzilla Vs. Biolante. And I love that movie. One minute there’s a weird spy subplot with some absolutely GLORIOUS Engrish (with Japanese subtitles!!), the next, I’m watching one of the best practical effect monster fights I’ve ever seen. Biolante was just fucking awesome, fight me, nerds.
But regardless of the quality of the films themselves, I’ll always adore Heisei period Godzilla movies for one reason nobody can deny: they all had some of the most FUCKING *METAL* posters ever made.

So it turns out that no one calls Steve Martin by his full name in the film because the makers didn't want anyone to confuse him with actor-comedian Steve Martin, who was a big hit at the time of the film's release. So they either call him Steve, Martin or Mr. Martin and he's listed as Steven Martin in the end credits.

The 1st rule of Gozilla movies that everyone seems to have forgotten: It's not a Godzilla movie unless there is a guy in a rubber dinosaur suit knocking over paper mache buildings.

So does that mean the Monsterverse movies and Shin/Resurgence don’t count.
