    "Between this and Rodan you would almost think Toho had just bought a giant wind machine and wanted to get their money's worth?" BINGO! Got it in one! This is Toho's standard approach to such things so long as Eiji Tsuburaya was still around. He maximized the use of every dime they spent. Remember what happened to the Octopus used in King Kong vs Godzilla. It was both an efficient low budget special effect and Tsubaraya's lunch that day.

  • @tajniak4335
    @tajniak4335 Před 2 lety +23

    Nelson portrayed by Jerry Ito is by far the most memorable thing of this movie, a character so cartoonishly evil he's over the top even in a kaiju movie, and that says something.

  • @MaskedRiderChris
    @MaskedRiderChris Před 4 lety +25

    "Mothra" is indeed a Toho classic, and as it happens, Mothra wasn't Catholic, but Eiji Tsuburaya was--he frequently found ways to incorporate his faith into the movies and shows he worked on. For example. Ultraman's classic Specium Ray pose is a riff on the True Cross to represent it as a force of goodness. The Mothra song, as sung by the late Ito twins, is one of the most touching and sweet songs I've ever heard, for sure; those girls could SING. Mothra is one of my very favorite Toho kaiju, as it happens, and she even made an appearance in my Pathfinder game briefly.

    ... This is suprisingly similar to Godzilla anime movies... specifically the second and third ones, which introduce a tribal race that worship Mothra and it's egg, introduces two identical twin characters that use telepathy to communicate - who aren't quite human themselves (although they aren't fairies in this case either... I think...) and live in a highly radiated environment...
    I have slightly more respect for those films now knowing that they in some sense incorporated ideas from the original Mothra movie despite taking place in a very different story set thousands of years in the future and involving alien races and shit lol.

    As "GODZILLA" was Japan's answer to "THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS" (totally true), "MOTHRA" was Japan's answer to "MIGHTY JOE YOUNG". Both involve cute girls and show business.
    The last time I watched "MOTHRA", my impression was that "Rolisica" was "America", and Mothra passed by San Francisco on its way to destroy LAS VEGAS. (But, that's me.)
