Here is my video on the decline of the Disney Channel. This is why the Disney Channel died. It's very simple but very sad. It was nostalgic for me to make this video so I hope you enjoyed watching it. Disney Channel had amazing Iconic shows with iconic songs and moments. Then it all went downhill and became terrible. The internet became big and Netflix and CZcams grew. Millennials started migrating to the internet. Disney tried to adapt the Disney Channel but they failed. Thus the Disney Channel died. Disney is now putting their focus on DIsney+ which makes complete sense. Disney is not dead but it's time to say goodbye to the Disney Channel.

There is no requirement that only content aimed at adults can be good. So long as the creators care and try to produce something good, mediaTheygreatestgreatest

its rlly sad hearing their “age compression” statement bc idc how much kids are being pushed out of tweenhood by dark teen media, it literally just takes studios like disney to do something different. kids still need simple relatable even “cringy” cheesy content. everyone tries to blame literal 12-18 yr olds for “growing up too fast” when they’re just absorbing wat theyve been given to watch. its not hard to give them something better.

They also make fun of that tween stage that everyone born in this internet age up until like the early 2000s went through kids go from watching Disney and Nick sitcoms in "kid" (usually bright colours and text) clothing to Riverdale and such and wearing crop tops and ripped jeans. Recently there was a crossover between Raven's Home and Bunk'd. You could definitely tell which parts were written by which show.
In my personal and correct opinion, Bunk'd is bad. It is mostly taken up by cheap humour. Raven's Home is a pretty smart show and never sounds as if it's trying too hard when they use certain slang words.
One half of the crossover ran smoothly and seemed as if real people were in the show instead of caricatures. The latter half had a fart machine and "We are geniuses so of course we can figure out how to get this through the door."

The real truth is Disney the company stopped really investing in disney channel, most of the good shows we got in the 2000s took yearssss of pre-production, they knew the success they wanted and they invested time and effort to make sure it went well, also the stars of the 2000s were used across platforms, they didnt profit just from the show's rating but also just how popular their actors & characters was, think Miley, selena, demi and the Jo Bros, heck hannah montana the movie beat out one of the fast & furious movie during the opening weekend box office, Hannah Montana was the tv show soundtrack to go #1 on billboard 100 in all of history BUT once they realised the success wasnt re-creatable and the risk if the actors went against the "disney image" they stopped caring, period

Here’s the issue with Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, etc. There’s becoming too many streaming services. It’s costing way more than a tv package to have all of the streaming services that you’ll need to watch your favorite shows scattered amongst all of them. However, pretty much everything can be viewed via CZcams Premium or illegal third party sites. If more companies keep putting out streaming services, it’ll backfire and eventually a lot of people will resort to other means after being sick of having to pay for subscriptions to multiple platforms.

You're absolutely right, and it just goes to show that the whole streaming realm is uncharted territory for all of the entertainment companies in terms of consumer desires. Eventually people are going to get sick of having to pay $200-300 a month for 10-20 different electronic entertainment subscriptions. What I think will happen in the future is that one or two of them may join forces with a handful of others so that there is a lesser total number of subscriptions and customers aren't as inundated with both the wide variety and compounding costs.
Let me give an example: NBC just launched its streaming service Peacock last summer. The problem is that its very new and not many have yet heard of it, so when you take a person who is already paying $50-100 a month for Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and even audio subscriptions such as Spotify and/or Apple Music, and then introduce them to Peacock, they will realize that they are already spending too much on entertainment and won't put out more cash for yet another streaming service, especially when its new and also likely has a limited catalog, which I suspect is the boat Peacock is in right now. If Peacock fails to take off for this reason, NBC might decide to eliminate it completely and sign a deal with Netflix or Hulu to carry their content instead, since they each already have a strong customer base. TL;DR, the streaming companies might start sharing their catalogs with each other so that there is a fewer total number of which the individual customers need to keep track.

I’m not a writer either but I kinda figured out why later Disney channel jokes stopped being funny.....it’s because of the actors/characters. Let me explain...... notice how when characters from old shows (Hannah Montana, zack and Cody, that’s so raven, etc.) tell a joke it’s funny because it comes from a specific character that has a define character trait that plays into the joke.
For example, the prendl scene, its funny because we know London is an airhead and would think the gear shift is something you spell and mr. moseby dramatically correcting her because he is a dramatic character and adding the “AM or FM” just adds to how dumb London is and would probably understand what he’s talking about. It’s more like the actors are selling you the joke with their characters vs now the actors are telling you the joke and expect for you to understand

There's nothing wrong with having things being unrealistic because it's the core themes and the characters that are supposed to hit us in the heart. In the end, I think it's because they're playing it safe. That's So Raven is unrealistic for many of us, but it was entertaining, it made us laugh, cry, cheer Raven on and I guess those are things considered "relatable", but I think Disney Channel needs to find a balance in their writing.

The only thing I’ll disagree with is when the decline started. I feel like some of the more recent shows like ANT Farm and Liv and Maddie started off really great. And as they progressed past the first season, things started to taper off. I think they were struggling to find shows that would click with audiences and would just drag out the ones that they had that were doing okay until they could find new ones. That unfortunately never happened.
And it’s such a shame that Disney doesn’t put even MORE effort into their animated series. Gravity Falls, Wonder Over Yonder, Star Vs The Forces Of Evil, Amphibia, The Owl House, etc. are all considered some of the best animated shows from the second half of the 2010s and the first half of the 2020s! Disney needs to start focusing more on that imo because they have a lot more leverage there.

But literally after that cross over from 2010 it’s like we had so many people with crazy talents but they didn’t get the hype they deserved. As much as I love the 2000s Disney talent, people need to stop thinking that was the only era of talent just because that was the era they grew up in. Like so many after 2010 could’ve became worldwide pop stars or whatever they wanted to do but it’s been wasted or not recognized. Even Kylie Cantrell with the new generation of Disney, she’s crazy talented and I wish she was platformed more. One thing I noticed was that they seemed to stop wanting to cast super young actors as the stars. They used to have a formula: Hire a 13 year old, do heaps of seasons as they grow up, then rinse and repeat once the inevitable 'child star struggles with growing up in the spotlight' controversies set in.
It seems like they switched to actors in their late teens to avoid this (plus once they reach 18 they don't have to deal with child acting restrictions), but then you end up with 20 year old stars wanting to be able to act their age and move on with their careers so you only get a small number of seasons and a star that the audience can't really connect with outside of the show.

All the shows had it, even the worse ones. You could always picture it without it feeling too out of place. It started feeling more and more out of place as years went on but it didn't really disappear until about mid 2017. All the shows, from suite life of Zack and Cody, to Austin and Ally, to Any Farm, to Good Luck Charlie, heck even to Stuck in the Middle, and Best friends whenever. Even the Disney XD shows had a similar feeling like Kick'n it, Lab Rats, and Wonder Over Yonder. And usually the best one was saved for August. It was a huge thing and it was all my friends could talk about during summer break. We can thank High School Musical (2006) for that. Disney noticed it hit a near perfect formula for both high viewership and selling merch and tried to replicate it year after year. These shows were so popular that they had concert tours and even a movie (for Violetta), the only Disney shows from the USA that did the same thing were Hannah Montana and Lizzie McGuire (I think).
I think what made them so popular in the first place is that they were extremely different from American shows. They didn’t have laugh tracks and unfunny jokes, the storylines were more mature (with real life issues and subject like loss, grieving and adoption), and the characters were relatable and lovable.

I have noticed Disney seems to be aiming at trying to attract teens and young adults more than kids these days. Especially since they are the ones with the money and the means to purchase merchandise by the bucketloads for their "Disney collections". Disney is practically piggy-back riding on popular properties such as "Star Wars" and Marvel, (making a Star Wars attraction that costs $6,000 for two nights) and their original movies aren't even that original anymore. Like "Moana", "Frozen 2", and "Raya and the Last Dragon" all had a story plot that went like: "Protagonist's home is being threatened by some natural force and needs to find an object that can help save her home." I can understand how they would feel hopeless though. Society is changing like a landslide, and the entertainment competition keeps piling on for the attention of the younger generations, as well as the older ones.

100%. Miley Cyrus was only 11 when she recorded the Hannah Montana pilot, and was 12 for the rest of Season 1. Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana was canonically 14, but Miley was just especially talented for her age. I think it's much better to hire a 17/18 year old to play a 14/15 year old (so long as they look the part), rather than a 12 year old who acts without skill. The reason they "hire young" is so they get as many years of convincing acting from the kids as possible. A 12 year old can play a 14 year old consistently until they're around 16-17 and they'll still be recognizable and relatable to a young audience. But will kids want to watch for that long, if the 12 year old isn't a talented actor? If there's no chemistry? This is why Disney Channel is dying.

I feel like the only show that escaped was HSMTMTS, it followed the old formula but tried new things, was mature-ish and it was successful-ish. Andi Mac tried this but failed because it focused to much on a formula while trying to be mature AND for kids at the same time.

That’s interesting about Good Luck Charlie. That was actually a very well-written show for Disney and was the only show my husband and I watched from beginning to end when it was on Netflix. But I agree that pretty much everything else on Disney Channel at the time was hot garbage lol. Wizards of Waverly Place seemed like the last good show as it was airing, and that was around the time that the channel went downhill. I was in college during the WoWP/Hanna Montana/HSM years, and it wasn’t just me growing up, the vast majority of their shows were just not that good and it seemed like all they were doing was trying to pump out manufactured “triple threats” that usually couldn’t sing very well but were passible with the growing trend of heavy autotuning. The heart was gone. The scripts were poor. And the actors were just not good. We TRIED to sit through Girl Meets World as BMW was our whole childhood, but at the end of every episode all we could do was discuss how it could have been so much better if they were appealing to a target audience that was more realistic, rather than dumbing down the show to elementary school kids. The entire premise was life from the perspective of a growing middle-high schooler, they missed the boat on that so hard.

I try to take Cait Loves Disney's opinion in consideration that Disney Channel hasn't changed, the target audience has. And The Hugh Guy's opinion that the shows we love aren't that much better than today's shows. On one hand, I half agree with Cait that to some extent, Disney Channel hasn't changed. There's always going to be terrible shows and great shows running at the same time. I can't judge their current sitcoms cuz I haven't watched them except Raven's Home and Sydney to the Max. Sydney to the Max is better as it's more consistent with its' quality while Raven's Home has been hot and cold with their quality throughout the second and third seasons. For what it's worth, their current fourth season so far is solid. Not great, solid. And I half agree with Hugh that to some extent the channel's shows in the past wasn't that much better. The channel has ALWAYS had cringey moments even during their golden age. And it doesn't help knowing how cheap the channel has always been with their budgets despite being a faction of a multi million dollar company. For example, Secrets of Sulphur Springs is the channel's best current live action show overall and the first original drama in years! I love the characters, the atmosphere, the twists! And then I found that this show was made for Disney+, which obviously has a higher budget. Disney Channel will probably never be as successful as they were in the 2000s and all these problems they brought on themselves are the reasons why not even kids take them seriously anymore.
Edit: by the way, screw Disney for giving their worst show 5 seasons despite their ridiculously strict four season limit while cancelling their best shows under just three or less.

I feel like if shows were better it would simply attract more kids. Yes the kids of today are changing, but most channels and their spark died off around 2011-2013. I wouldn’t blame kids of today for not wanting to watch cable. A lot of shows these networks are coming out with are remakes just bad remakes: Ravens Home, Total DramaRama etc… I’m not saying all of these shows being produced now are bad. But they are lacking luster, and I do blame networks for this.

I think it’s just that creators don’t come up with the same concepts that keep people engaged anymore. I rewatched Wizards of Waverly Place and a bunch of other shows, and they were still entertaining even though I am now in my twenties. There was also something interesting, like wizards lining in NYC and their interactions with both the wizarding and real world, or a regular girl who is secretly a pop star and lives a wacky life when she’s not being glam and doing shows, twins living in a hotel and causing mischief. I feel like once they ran out of those concepts, even the writers couldn’t come up with anything convincing. They rely on cheesy pop-culture references and quirky cheap bits for laughs nowadays. And as the video said, they try to implement this weird comedy that isn’t believable into these shows which supposedly happen in real life.

To an extent I agree, but I have seen way too many times people revisiting old media and literally LAUGHING THEIR ASSES OFF. Sometimes I see that for newer stuff but with old stuff, those videos become viral because the jokes were surprisingly great, but of course we were too young to understand a lot of them.

Also coupled with the fact that kids don't really have cable, and when they do, they don't have much time to sit through commercials, wait for their show to come on for an episode or two... Why go through the hassle of waiting and all that when you could binge with the click of a button?

One thing I loved about old Disney channel shows is they slowly grew with the audience, each season was like a new age and the things that happened in the show would be different than the season before. Newer Disney channel shows could be going for 7 season and the character where 16 in the first season with a 16 year old actor and in the 7th season the character is only 18(you do the math) while the actor is 23.

Andi Mack should have come out right after Jessie ended. But I feel like they waited too long and suffered for it. The only “reruns” they have now, are Jessie, Phiness & Ferb, and a few others. With reruns like that, it makes cringe when I rewatch these shows, and makes me cry because it’s not like how it was. Nostalgia is both a blessing and a curse. I feel like these kids are coming out of the womb with smartphones, and the instant gratification isn’t healthy. There’s no more “event television” anymore and I feel like Disney Channel had some of the last kind.

Andi Mack and Sydney to the Max should have come out when Slice of Life was still a popular genre and Disney was all into that shit instead of trying to launch The Next Big Star because now it's just weird to see them, like someone froze something from the 90s and dragged its cryogenic corpse onto modern TV.
It's like the Lizzie McGuire reboot. Yeah, Disney and literally everyone wanted it, including me at one point, but then I stopped and thought about how that would realistically play out - sure, a thirty something Lizzie sounds good on paper, and God I would love to see Animated Lizzie upgraded from bellbottoms, a crop top and large shoes - but would it take a more Rocko's Modern Life approach to the original or hacksaw it like they did with Masters of the Universe?

I was a little too young to appreciate Jett Jackson, Lizzie and So Weird but I remember those shows vividly and the whole Zoog Disney stuff of the early 2000's and late 90s. I was born in late 1992, and my parents bought DirectTV. So I was able to catch the end tail of those shows before it was ending. But I was mainly watching Toon Disney from 1999 to 2002. When they had Darkwing Duck, Sonic, Talespin, Chip N Dale and such.
