Best Running Jackets for All Conditions: Runner picks including inov-8, SOAR, On, New Balance, OMM

- From lightweight shells that take the edge off slightly colder runs in milder months, through to serious taped-seam waterproof, wind and rain-stoppers, The Run Testers have tested dozens of the very best running jackets you can buy right now. In this video we share our top picks, each picking two jackets - the layers that we turn to, to run in all seasons.
One caveat, we live in the UK where it's rainy but very rarely gets sub-zero crazy, so we've definitely chosen options to suit those conditions. Though some jackets here will pass those obligatory kit checks when it comes to mountain ultras.
Hit play on our best jackets rundown to find out what The Run Testers wear when the weather bites (a bit).

You're welcome.
Really looking forward to this low price jacket video!!
It’s getting there, testing done at least! Just need to get to filming
These prices are insane. With some of these products running could get more expensive than cycling.
They are serious money. And we're planning a more affordable jackets vid soon.
@@TheRunTesters Yes please :) I really like the soar jacket but it is ridiculous how expensive it is!
To be fair, equivalent cycling jackets are at least as expensive. As a cyclist taking a detour to do a marathon, I do share the sentiment about the expenses of running though. Depending on how well you can maintain your bike, it looks like the costs per kilometre could be similar to those of some mid-range shoes. It just goes to show that the costs of any sport or hobby will expand to meet any amount of disposable income on offer.
Cycling has clothes AND bike, bike gear/parts, bike maintenance. Sorry but no way.
I’ve literally just bought the Higher State jacket this week before watching this video so pleased it got a good review! Looking forward to trying it out (I imagine we’ll get the odd cold and wet day in the UK soon??!)
Great buy, and yes, might be worth having a jacket or two for the rare bad days
Got one on the way! Windproof Reflective or something? Yellow one… got it in the gilet version too. So this is music to my ears!!
Janji Zephyr Runner is amazing for running in the 4-10C range (40-50F). Very light weight, I can shove it in my running shorts if I need to take it off. Surprisingly warm, while not getting stifling hot as I warm up during the run. Keeps me warmer at the start than other thicker jackets I had, while also somehow keeping me cooler once I get going, I don't understand how. Runs a bit small in my experience, so I go a size up. Great when the weather is cooler and might rain a little bit on the run. No hood, so it won't save you in a downpour though if that bothers you.
Also recommend.
I bought the Salomon Mens Bonatti waterproof jacket a while back on sale. Tom in a previous video said it was good for severe wind and rain. I had a light NB jacket that was good for an added layer and cutting the wind, but not water proof. Where I live in the U.S. our weather can get very windy and very cold. I am so far please with my Salomon jacket. It has delivered on all the points Tom made.
Glad we could be of use. It's a great jacket.
@@TheRunTesters Yea it’s been really great so far and the best running jacket I have ever had! 👍
Jane's first pick is now like 60% the original price if you check On's "last season" products
Nick, have you had any experience wearing a running backpack on top of the Soar all weather jacket? Is the jacket durable enough for this?
Wrt OMM Kamleika’s Velcro at wrist. Easy fix to prevent the exposed grip from interfering. - Purchase some Velcro strips from a fabric or craft store.
- Fit the wrist of the jacket to your preference.
- Cut the soft side of the Velcro that you purchased to fit over the exposed grip side of the jacket.
Fantastic
Thanks Peter.
Laura, I am confused? Do you recommend Houdini air jacket or not?
For that extra bit of velcro that snags on different things, just get a couple of small loose velcro strips to cover up the area of velcro not already covered. Not sure if someone already suggested this, apologies if so.
Thanks Miguel. Good tip. 👍👍
@Nick what size did you get for the shakedry?
What jacket is he wearing in the beginning of the video? The gray one
I'm happy with my OMM kamleika its waterproof and I use it where exposure might be a problem (most training runs are close to home loops where I'm happy just to get wet).
I can dump heat easily through the cuffs and main + pocket zips. Most people don't realise membrane jackets need to be more humid inside than out, do you will get damp / wet. Their aim is to keep you from getting dangerously cold. Good jackets will breath when you lower intensity or you can dump heat with venting at higher intensity. For city runs, or where your end point you can change clothes, a windbreaker will suit most people better. They are lighter, more breathable, cheaper etc
Hi Kgkd (Kieran here), that's pretty much how I use my two jacket selections. One for shorter city stuff, one for longer more adventurous outings.
@@TheRunTesters Thanks for the reply.
@@TheRunTesters say you've got to have something that is better for walks or runs breathability, lightweight, And if possible waterproof too. Whats your best pick? Like I'm a heavy big guy all around and I get hot easy, but In Rome it sprinkles and pours too sporadically during the year and it's humid for me. I don't need anything for warmth really.( I can walk in my Colombia whirlibird II shell and build heat BC it's hefty and wind and water resistant, I use this for winters there. No snow anywhere lol so I'm fine.) But I want something that's excellent for breathability lightweight, and water resistant/repellant and taped too for extra water proofing. Wind resistance isn't important for me as of yet. Plus hooded . I know that's a lot to read, but if you ever see this or anyone else, I'll take by advice. I was looking at ON, and OMM and innov8. Thanks!
Stuff for spring-summer moments. Under 300USD preferred but I'll look at any options 😂
Got the Adidas xploric rain coat that's really storm proof got it for 40 ish euro was wrongly priced somewhere (it's worth 300+) sorry i won't say no... And the terrex running wind jacket . Perfect aswell
I bought a fairly cheap jacket recently and it's been really good but I do sometimes get that thing where the extended zip grabber gets in the path of my arm swing. Not a deal breaker but a bit annoying when it happens.
Hi Mark (Kieran here) though I was being a bit picky when I mentioned that about the OMM but over a long ultra, maybe 10 hours these little things do irritate.
Hi Nick.... just wondering is the soar too much /to heavy to wear all yr round in wet conditions...
It's a little too much for summer or mild spring showers I'd say, when it will be too warm - anything over 9-12 degrees and you're going to get hot unless running very easy.
Great review, loads of jacked I’ve never heard of. But Jane and Nick said about only wearing a T-shirt, no wonder you get sticky in waterproof 🤔
Thanks Mike. Are you a long sleeves under kind of guy?
@@TheRunTesters 😂 yer, I’m more an ultra runner, Kieran will understand 😉
You kind of need a long sleeve baselayer for 2.5 layer jackets. A thin 3 layer, like the Alpkit Gravitas, might allow T-shirt or bare skin. The UK has high humidity and ALL membrane jackets require a more humid microclimate inside the jacket to breath, so you will get damp in high activity. They key is not getting cold from exposure and as activity drops, you should dry out from the inside as body heat will get the wicking going. Maintaining the outer layer with DWR stops it wetting out (with the exception of shakedry which doesn't use a protective nylon outer layer - the membrane is exposed)
Jane and Nick are fancy A F I like it. hahahah
Tell us about it.
did you guys know about Harrier Trail Exmoor jacket?
I love jane accent
Nick what gilet do you recommend because the soar 3.0 is discontinued now.
There’s a new one from Soar I’m yet to test, but looks good. Iffley Road have a nice one too. I’m still mainly using the old Soar gilet tho tbh!
Love to get the soar one but just can’t justify the price. Have you tried the montane or the Higher state one.
I have the On Running Gilet and I'd highly recommend it. One of my most used items.
I have an inov8 Stormshell but have looked at the SOAR Weather Jacket 3.0 but can't stomach the price, is it really worth £270 Nick?
If you already have the Stormshell hard to say spending another £270 is worth it tbh! The inov8 is already a great jacket :)
@@TheRunTesters that’s saved me some money then 😂
Marmot and Salomon are my go to running jacket brands.
Hi David (Kieran here), I've also used the Salomon Bonatti a lot in ultra races. I rate that one too. Just had to make choice of two for this vid. Wasn't allowed more!
@@TheRunTesters Cool, really liked that OMM jacket you picked Kieran, great features.🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️
Houdini is favorite as long as it’s not raining.
What do you use in the rain?
@@TheRunTesters I’m still searching. I ordered a lululemon running jacket. We will see. I usually just get soaked.
Houdini or Houdini Air?
@@JAH1139 air
Any cheaper jacket recommendations? Thanks
Hey Dave, we are currently working on a video that should answer that question for you very soon
@@TheRunTesters I'll look forward to that.
Tell soar i need one with a watch window in the sleeve
We'll pass on the feedback. More jackets need watch windows.
Do windows work, do they not just steam up 🤔 good idea though.
@@mikehall6433 they are just holes in the sleeve near the wrist where you can poke the watch through and access the buttons, without having to pull the sleeve up. It will be great on jackets like the soar one that have thumb holes cause you can imagine when using the thumb holes then needing to look at your watch would be very fidgety.
@@JoutarouKuujou1 surly you will get water ingress and that will defeat the idea of a waterproof jacket, water running into your gloves.
@@mikehall6433 Can't see much water getting in unless you're holding it open on purpose.
insanely expensive options
Yep, we have a cheaper jackets round-up here though Best Cheap Running Jackets: Sub-£100/$120 jackets tested from Kalenji, Brooks, Columbia and more

THANKS Nick, for 300 pounds I sure hope these are the best running jackets that have ever existed :P. Anyway if you think they are the best from the ones that you got it can't be helped.
If you can afford it get the Soar. If you can’t afford it save up and get the Soar.
👍
Nick and Tom ,appear anyway, to have completely diverse take on way fwd based on different body physiology ??? , cant be That different
You forgot to include Arcteryx Incendo , Trino and Norvan.
Hi Sean, many jackets we had to leave out as we were picking two each that were our go-to picks. Do you use these?
i already have 10 pairs of shoes. now imagine my wife how fast she will run away from me when i tell her: honey my unemployed ass want's a new running jacket ... just 200-300 pounds, just :)
Maybe don't risk marital strife! 😂
@@TheRunTesters no, no i'll wait for the cheaper one, cheers and thanks for the video, very informative!
