- What's the best waterproof jacket for trail and ultra runners this year? Here I have reviewed 7 jackets from all the major brands including Inov8, Salomon, Montane, OMM, Ultimate Direction, Rab, and Kalenji, with prices ranging from £55 to £190.
These are not a superlight, stripped down, sub-100g emergency jackets, these are all around the 200g mark or slightly less. And I also talk here about how no jacket is totally 'breathable'...watch to find out more.
As with all the gear I test on my channel these were sent to me by the brands, but they have absolutely no control over what I say in this review, as hopefully you can tell by my honest but constructive comments.
Tell me in the comments below which waterproof you currently like best!

Thank you and nicely done. I appreciate how you summarized all of this information very concisely and thoroughly. Congratulations on the addition to the WGR team!
Brilliant review Claire well done , thank you for putting this together , it has a lot of details about how to use a jacket and some interesting points that are very helpful on the trails . I like your garden especially the big tree and the fence .
The best jacket review video I've seen. Would like to know a wee bit more on breathability and waterproofness "in the wild"; but otherwise brilliant. Love the ethos and ethics part.
Awesome review !! Thanks. I have a kamleika jacket that I’ve had for a couple of years. It’s never been any good in the rain & even treated it with the storm reproofer & cleaner as recommended by OMM. Waiting for a solution from wiggle where I bought it. Looking at the Montane Minimus ready for a couple of winter races so this was perfect timing 👌
Hi Claire, thanks for the review. I have a Ronhill aqualite it’s got some good features. A chest pocket that the jacket itself stuffs into a popper that allows the zip to be down without flapping, a wired adjustable hood adjustable waist and hood. A storm flap behind the waterproof zip and soft fabric under the chin. The hood can be rolled up and it’s held in place with a Velcro strap with a fabric hook the you hang it up with. Down side is it a noisy russley but other than that perfect. I’ve had it around 3 year and I think it cost £160.00 at the time.
Really great review and info regarding the brands!
Thank you for sharing your good review. It helps me to buy new waterproofs.
You did well with the weather when filming this one considering how wet it's been recently!
The tip for tying the jacket around your waist so that it hangs down in front to protect your legs is utter genius. I can't believe it never occurred to me to try that before. Thank you!
sew on a couple of elastic loops on the bottom edge, tuck the sleeves through, then tie up. It won’t unravel.
I don't remember when I saw such good review on youtube last time. Thx.
Glad you liked it!
I appreciated your tips on buying and using a waterproof jacket as well as the reviews, thank you. Subscribed 🙂
Awesome! Thank you!
Useful stuff, thanks. And I'm delighted to discover, in this video and in the comments, that other people wear waterproofs over and not under their pack! I always seem to be the only one doing it down here in Cornwall and get lots of weird looks.
Glad it was helpful! We are not alone with the hunchback look lol!
I only buy kit when need it not want it... said no one ever... ha ha ha ha good reviews Claire like it forwarded it on to a couple of pals that are in the market for new jackets
This review and tips has been really useful, my jacket always gets a little damp inside and I didn't know whether this was to be expected or not. Off to look at jackets now!
Glad it was helpful!
I really love how your covering all the recycling etc that they are all doing not just the products. It can sway my decisions sometimes
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
@@wildgingerruns would you consider rubbing back to back with it on if I had a blue one on
I love my Montane Minimus, because it is roomier, so I always wear it over my running pack, even a 20 liter pack, it's way easier to put on and off this way, keeps everything in my pack dry (why have yourself dry but the pack soaking). Use it year round, also great for the mountains with the big hood for a helmet. I already have my second one, first one is totally destroyed from hours spent in the rain and being just everywhere with me. Zippers, hand cuffs, drawcord, inside lamination coming apart, DWR does not work anymore, even if renewed, but still 100% waterproof for emergencies during cycling in the city.
Cool! Great commend RF, thanks for sharing :)
Nice group review. Thank you for the upload.
I use a Salomon Bonatti Pro running jacket and am pleased with it (I'm just over 6ft tall and take a size L); it is hard to stress how useful the chest popper is to allow for cooling off; I would prefer if the hood had draw cords with which to fix it when the wind picks up (I use a buff as a substitute). I also use an OMM Halo jacket, which in my experience is less good than the Salomon (no chest popper, irritating zip around the chin area and less waterproof than the Salomon when out for a long time in the rain). Both jackets could do with a method of fixing the hood when not in use.
I regularly wash my running waterproofs and also re-proof when necessary. In the past, I didn't wash my jackets regularly enough; washing my jackets has definitely improved their performance in the wet (I use Nikwax and am advised that one should never use a regular detergent, as this will damage the waterproofing system).
@@wildgingerruns Thanks Claire. Yes, I would add the pop-up; washing waterproofs is certainly important and, to my experience, underrated, which it should not be!
Hi Claire - great reviews as always! I have the Ronhill infinity Fortify jacket. Waterproof-ness and breathability are great, and it has an adjustable hood (that rolls away) and draw cord at the bottom. The fabric is papery rather than plasticky but OMG it’s soooooo noisy! I never realised that was even a factor to consider when buying a jacket and something I notice you didn’t mention in your reviews. It’s pretty off-putting unless I’m listening to music!
@@wildgingerruns thanks Claire...I might have to get saving!
Hi Claire. Why not the Montane 'minimus ultra' jacket which they have in their Via range?
Great vid though thanks 😊
I bought the Salomon Bonatti jacket. Very light weight and I have used it in torrential rain and didn’t get wet. It’s big enough to get over my running vest. Also packs down to its own chest pocket for storage which is handy
Dont worry , that will soon pack in and you will get soaked and the commercial reproofing is an absolute con !
@@stuartchester6899 Still working fine no issue
@@northernninjarunner5506 Yet ! it will wear off .When it does, don t bother with commercial stuff make up a DIY waterproofing out of a mix of Silicone and White/Mineral spirit and paint it on .Nothing gets through it
Thanks for this -very ueful. I've just been learning all about MVTR, RET ,HH, membranes etc to decide on a jacket..
It would have been great to see the Alpkit Gravitas (B Corp status) on that list. Maybe in a future feature?
The Alpkit is a light, packable 3-layer so preferable to 2 / 2.5 and on my short list. 20K HH & good MVTR - on my short list, would like to see how it compares. No pit vents to dump heat - breathability and venting to dump heat are key on my list. Also the Adidas Terrex Agravic (2.5 layer like the Ultimate Direction). Adidas don't seem to share data on hydrostatic head or MCTR / Ret
@@wildgingerruns Yes - useful thanks. I don't mind getting wet on most runs but want to commute to run somewhere nicer (hire bike / train etc) and want to stay warm dry as possible. With a packable jacket that I might take off once I get moving. As a "townie" I don't have any experience with good waterproofs but if something can cross over for day hike use and last years, thats great. A lot to ask, no doubt compromises be made somewhere. 3 layer seems to be more durable. Hard to know what to believe with the brands marketing machines.
Warm and damp sounds like a British summer!
Congratulations!
Thank you!
I have a Salomon Lightening WP and I’m neither short or petit. It’s one of the few brands that make jackets in my size.
@@wildgingerruns mine covers my comfort tummy very well (congrats by the way ☺️). I have an older version so maybe I got lucky 😁
A very good review. Firstly, I am not a runner, I am a trekker walker. I am looking for a new lighter range of outdoor kit items. My jacket, base layer has been a mix of Paramo. H&H, Marino wool with Either Rohan or Swazi NZ made kit. This has all lasted a long time, but It needs to be replaced.
Fab glad to help!
Which of the jacket would pass kit check for a ultra like the Arc
The first minutes of this are on the money and should be at the start of every waterproof jacket review.
Thanks J P-S (great name btw). Yup, no jacket is 'breathable' in the way people think it would be!
@@wildgingerruns oixxx
Unless the male version of the UD differs, then there actually is an internal pocket on the left side...
It's a bit invisible, but perfect to pack it self in.
Its the best rain running jacket I've ever had. Doesnt tear easy and if I'm not carying to much attached to my pack (UD Ultravest 5) I can make it fit over the pack (But properly not on bigger packs than that), and it packs really small.
I hate running in rainjackets, but some races demand you have it along in the race.
Only downside with the jacket (and all the others xept RAB!) is that its impossible to roll the hood down and hide it away.
I just cant stand running with the hood up.
I've only used the hood once in a snowstorm, so on the other rainy runs, the hood is just a brake parachute :-)
Oh, and many races have a minimum requirement for how waterproof and breathable a jacket has to be.
UD can handle it all.
@@wildgingerruns Hi'.
Yes, its the V2.
Sadly I cant upload a picture here, but it does have an internal pocket on the left side.
On roadtrailrun ( www.roadtrailrun.com/2019/05/ultimate-direction-running-apparel.html ) Sam is holding the jacket up on one of the pictures, showing the internal pocket.
Not having the same pocket option on the female version is stupid, since there are no other pocket options.
A strange choise from UD...
Im very tempted to copy the rollaway fastening system from the RAB.
Keep up your great work and keep running :-)
Does the Kamleika not have a rollup hood fastener? I have an older version which does
@@wildgingerruns my older version has a velcro tag to hold the rolled up hood. Absolutely sure it doesn't have something similar?
Can I ask what size you are wearing in the OMM Kamleika? I am usually a UK size 10-12 (35.5" underbust ,32" waist, 40.5" hips) and it is hard to know what size to get.
It was a M, you sound like you would be an M in them too as you sound very similar in size to me. Hope that helps!
@@wildgingerruns thankk you, very helpful !
I found Pertex to wet through very fast, and any jacket with DWR will lose proofing over time.
Why no Shakedry jackets? - The Dynafit Shakedry with expandable back is the ultimate waterproof IMO.
@@wildgingerruns Salomon and some other brands also have shakedry jackets, but the Dynafit one is nice to wear over a pack.
@@wildgingerruns hehe ok you convinced me to change my name
I'd say the on cloud one is good... However it is not cheap at all. I have the weather jacket and it's brilliant, however this is not their anorak.
@@wildgingerruns indeed
Have you tried the shake dry jackets sold by numerous brands?
Not yet, they look whizzy, but all new or recently-rewaterproofed jackets from all brands should make water bead up and roll off (shake off!) in the same manner. Nice marketing from Gore-Tex though.
#Montura?
Not heard of them, don't think they are widely available in the UK
why no cycling gear ? salomon, montane, rab are more hiking gear. Hikers dont work up as much sweat as runners, and certainly not as much as cyclists.95% of cycling gear will have a low back, thumb loops,vents/pit zips.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Certainly not Ultimate Direction trousers. £85 , high spec but a few months after light use the first heavy day of rain left me soaked through right to my underpants and skin. I don t care how breathable they are if the rains hard enough you get cold cold rain which can have you in danger in winter up on the hills... Very poor..I m now doing a DIY waterproofing, because i tried commercial spray on stuff which made no difference.. CZcams DIY waterproof ing anfd you will be surprised how you can make them 100% waterproof for very little outlay
100% silicone sealant and low odour white spirit are the two things you need. Mix to a thin treacle and just paint the liquid on..Hang up to dry in the open air .24 hrs later any smell of white spirit will have gone. Try a hose on it and it just beads off like water off a ducks back.
OK the breathabilty will have virtually gone but warm very little sweat is far better than a thorough soaking . I tried it using bog standard cheap silican and worked perfectly..Good for running shoes and training shoes , jackets .On CZcams they make cotton sheets work like a tarp and good enough for a fly sheet..USE CLEAR/TRANSPARENT silicone not coloured
How annoying! Have you seen my waterproof trousers review here? I like the Montane Podium Pants very much from that, I still use those. czcams.com/video/t6UQOJwcdK0/video.html
@@wildgingerruns My last ones were Rab , cost £110 only weighed 130 grams and they at least worked in the year I used it , but for some unknown reason I have lost them .I will paint the Ultimate Direction s in the silicone mix whcih will at least make them 100% waterpoof albeit a bit sticky because they won t breathe, but thats better than being soaked to the skin and freezing cold. The silicone sealant and white spirit mix does work
