    I don’t always comment on videos, but I have to say this is an excellent and very thorough review of the technical rain jackets I have been looking at. Need something both for emergency use in the mountains and for PNW / Vancouver winters where it rains incessantly. Very recently I bought the TNF Flight Futurelight jacket based on reviews here and elsewhere. While this served as a thorough review of the jacket in wet weather, I wanted to add, for anyone that reads this far down in the comments, that the jacket is amazing when it isn’t raining, like, surprisingly so. You touch on the breathability when wet. I can also attest that it is the best I’ve tried, by far, even when compared to jackets I’ve had like the Arcteryx Norman SL, but it is also freaking fantastic when dry and just somewhat cold or windy. It is so breathable, that I could actually wear it even on a tempo in crazy winds and not sweat buckets. This is what sold it fo me at least as I like having gear I can wear in multiple scenarios. It will also be in my ski touring kit for spring sunny days for emergencies. Such an awesome jacket. I can’t recommend it enough. And great review, was really psyched to find something this long and thorough across many different jackets.

    Thanks a million for such a thorough review. You are NOT cutting any corners in your reviews... and it shows! I am also thrilled that you test lesser known brands such as Raidlight. Just got 2 running t-shirts from them. Clearly made by trail runners for trail runners!

      Thanks Karl! I opened a RaidLight account last May, made a decent opening buy as I think their gear is well done. Unfortunately they made the decision right then to pull out of the US market.

      @@TrailsCollective very sorry to hear that. The brand had been bought by Rossignol then sold. They may not be so strong financially and COVID impacted them. Their winter hybrid jacket seems well made too...

      @@kgenest100 the US market can be tough to break into if just focused on Trail. Salomon has poured tons of resources into the market and hasnt been able to as much as would seem worth it. They began angling very intentionally into just as much road 4-5 years ago, and getting a bit smoother there. Apparel is a whole 'nother beast and very difficult for brands and stores to really make profitable. Salomon continuing as an example, are all but pulling out of running dedicated apparel for next fall / winter, at least in the US. Unfortunate as they made some solid pieces.

    Agree with your winner. I've been running ultras for 10+ years and nothing breathes and provides wind/rain protection better than Futurelight fabric. I was a Salomon Bonatti Pro guy before.

    Hugely informative. Have you a wind shell test? Have you heard of the British brand Montane? Have excellent apparel and have just launched a nano wind jacket that’s arguably one of the lightest in the world at around 55g. Keep up the good work!

    Great job guys. Your insightful vid helped me decide to go with the NF flight futurelight and so far after two downpours I'm impressed, it keeps you dry!
    Question on the north face flight future light, could you post the link of the white gloves you are wearing ? I'm thinking they must be water resistant, what would be the weather you recommend those for ? Today I ran under the rain at 7C and definitely felt the need of gloves with the wind and all... Keep up the good work! Hope you can make another video about best running shoes for rain too!

    I think you did a great job in breaking down details of each jacket and I appreciate that effort but I have to say based on your own words - how do you rank the NorthFace FLight Future Light over the Salomon Bonatti Pro ? You mentioned how you noticed the difference between 10K jackets and the 20 K waterproof and breathability on the Salomon Bonatti Pro - you were almost totally dry from rain or perspiration . And you preferred the way the hood sat on the Salomon Pro and liked the more convenient chest pocket on the Bonatti Pro over the NorthFaces kind of annoying rear pocket 'weighing down' the rear of jacket .. And yet The NorthFace gets first place ? By the way why doesn't The North Face have specs on their jacket ? I sometimes have this cynical thought that NorthFace has groupies that pump the product line similar to Apple fans . I'm not saying you are in that crowd but this review seems odd to me .

    Disappointed that no options under $100 were covered in this video. Why not also cover something like the Decathlon Kiprun shower proof light running jacket which is 6 ounces, has two ventilation zips and comes in at $55? I'd love to see a review and testing on something like that.

    Surprised by this review of the Inov8 storm shell. I have one and it’s exceptional in the wet. Might be wise to get one that fits b4 reviewing it to. It was an awkward watch given it was too big. I don’t say this to be mean, but you could put people off buying a decent product.

    • @TrailsCollective
      @TrailsCollective  Před 3 lety

      Unsure I agree with the critique, or that we didn't raise the possibility in the review. For me (first reviewer) smalls are too binding in my armpits, I found the length of the medium good in torso and sleeves (need that extra fabric to make comfortable use of the thumb holes), and, being fairly thin in the stomach, I just get the belly button balloon out a bit. And, as you do, and as I mentioned, I do like the shell. Of all the shells in the closet I actually drew on it for directing a race this weekend in a full day if rain. For Rich, who was the second reviewer, he actually mentions in the review that a size small would have been good to compare as he's quite skinny and there was too much fabric, so that angle was stated in the review. But he's also 5'10'ish and not sure a small would have given him the torso length even if the volume would have been better.

      I do regarding liking it the most. one of the only ones that doesn't just feel laminated and in that regard least like a trashbag, and breathed best. Not the lightest of the bunch so it'll be more a daily run jacket vs emergency shell to pack and pull out. I'll try the combination of Nathan vest and jacket on today (if able) and get back to you.

      @@januszciechowskiphotograph7297 Yes, I'm traditionally a medium, and the medium overtop of a vest still fit. It had enough volume expansion to accommodate the vest even though it doesn't have baffle expansion gussets like the Salomon Bonatti Pro. The length came up a bit higher on the waist when the volume pushes out, but the fit still felt correct.

    Do you recommend wearing waterproof socks when road running in rain?

    • @TrailsCollective
      @TrailsCollective  Před 3 lety

      No. I want my feet to breath, not start sweating like a beast between skin and waterproof sock. I'd consider waterproof shoes if in wet alpine conditions where I was out for awhile and safety an issue. Otherwise I don't wear waterproof shoes either as once the water's in, it's slower to get out and hotter. Parallels to jackets where the breathability really makes a difference, but in jackets a bit different equation when it's over a larger surface area and your core.

    • @scrumpymanjack
      @scrumpymanjack Před 3 lety +1

      No, not a good idea. But I like to slip into some Ziplocks and then tape the tops to my legs so that absolutely no water can get in. That way, my feet stay nice and snug during a cold, wet run. It's not for everyone, but I feel it even makes me go faster than normal. Maybe that has to do with the "zip" in the name. Who knows!

    • @TrailsCollective
      @TrailsCollective  Před 3 lety

      @@jonomichi2262 I don't unfortunately. The Montbell looks nice and fitted, and would appear to take it on WP/Breathability equation. The pit zips could be useful but I'd want to try them on first as I wouldn't assume that I wouldn't get some increased stiffness if not rub on those zipper / seam lines while running. Salomon looks like it would feel and weigh in a bit more minimally given the Montbell's increased zippers and cords. Tough call without being able to try the Montbell on.
