  • To get the best out of your Tascam Portacapture X8 it is important to keep the firmware up to date so that you can benefit from any fixes and feature updates that the manufacturer puts out.
The process is quite straight forward, but care needs to be taken to make sure you don't cause any issues with your device.
I have provided the steps as per the Tascam instructions, but there are alternative approaches that can be taken. Instead of connecting your Tascam Portacapture X8 to your computer to copy the firmware file onto the SD card, you can just put the SD card into your computer (with an appropriate SD card reader or port) and copy the file across directly.

Is there any reason for choosing Tascam over comparable Zoom products?

A professional audio recorder (recordist?) would have very clear preferences based on their use case (Zoom performs much better at very low audio levels, the tascam has a noticeable ultrasonic whine when recording very quiet environments), but for the vast majority of us, they are both more than capable of meeting our requirements. In fact they can do more than we will ever need, and perform way beyond our own capabilities.
So, it comes down to specific features and/or brand & device preference. I already own a Tascam DR-05X (which I liked very much - all the Trees and Wheels videos are recorded on it), so even though I like the Zoom products, I would choose the Tascam as a 'known quantity'.
Zoom vs Tascam could be an entire video on its own... if @ZoomSoundLab want to send me a comparable device I'll happily produce the video! 😎

Makes sense to stick with a brand you know and trust 👍🏻

The Tascam X8 is a fantastic recorder if you consider versatility. I would call it a Swiss army knife. When I picked it up, it was significantly cheaper than any comparable 6 channel 32 bit float recorder. The touchscreen makes it super convenient to use and it also acts as a mixing board. I love it for my personal, hobby needs. It does have some flaws and I could imagine improvements both in software and hardware, but hey, there is still no real competitor. I also have some Zoom recorders, and may get even more, but I am not a brand boy, if a certain model of a different brand is a better option, why would you stay away?
