Fixing the X3M's harsh ride with MSS' Ride Management System

  • When we reviewed the X4M last year we noted that whilst it handled well, it had a very harsh ride, making it fairly unpleasant day to day especially when you consider it is an SUV not a sports car. Owners of the cars agreed with what we found, and MSS knew they could improve upon the situation.
    Knowing the kit had been in development for a few months we were keen to get an X3M in to test out, and see if MSS really can fix that harsh ride BMW gave the car. Spoiler alert, it definitely can!

    Thank you for putting this review together. We bought a 2020 X3 M thinking it would be a great family vehicle. The stock ride was unbearable, but the MSS springs have transformed the ride. The car is now enjoyable and handles better. So glad to have found out about this product.

    The "data" showing the ride quality, I assume the spikes on the graph are shocks experienced by the vehicle. And since there are way more blue spikes than green, would that not indicate that the MSS springs at stock height and MORE harsh? In fact, the lowest spikes on the entire chart, are the stock BMW springs?
    Also, does the suspension still stiffen up in sport/sport plus like normal? And does it void the warranty? Nobody else cares enough about these things, to warrant addressing them in a 10 minute long video about the springs?

    Hi! Owning x3 M40i from 2020 and unfortunately without the adaptive suspension. It rides on 20’’ with RTFs and i (and my 1 month old baby) find the ride quality too stiff. Do you think MSS would be of a help here? I am pretty sure m40i is not as stiff as X3M but still...

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  Před 3 lety +1

      I’d imagine it would help, but ditching the runflats would also help, along with going down a tyre size. It really depends what you’re feeling. The harsh stiffness on potholes etc is more likely the wheel/tyre, where a more general stiffness could be the suspension.

      Evolve Automotive You know for people like me that are very technical it makes me nervous to install the suspension. I was seriously considering purchasing this for my 2020 M2 competition. But I feel like there’s not enough test data.I feel like this has not been properly vetted I feel like there’s no mention of how this is affecting the dampers long-term there doesn’t seem to be a lot of test data just seems lotta marketing to get people to purchase it.

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  Před 4 lety +1

      If you are looking for the sort of test data an OEM produces, then without waiting for time to pass, I don't think you're going to get it from most aftermarket companies. The budgets and setups required to do intensive testing that can condense years worth of use in to a sensible time scale during development of a product are simply not attainable for non OEM level companies.
      What I can say is that the MSS suspension is developed correctly, by engineers who specialise in that field. They understand how dampers work, take in to account their safe operating range, making sure the kit does not allow the damper to bottom out or operate outside of that which can cause damage. It is one reason why the MSS kit may not go as low as others, because of MSS' consideration of keeping the life span of a damper to an acceptable level.
      But if you are that worried about fitting springs to existing dampers, but want the improvements, I would suggest looking at replacing the dampers as well with Bilsteins along with the MSS kit. Depending on your car that might mean losing EDC if Bilstein do not offer an EDC compatible damper solution.

I do enjoy putting it in sport plus everything and pressing the start button then instantly flooring the accelerator for Massive pops and bang. Let me know what you mean by Logic 3 drive

      Stuff hey just press the little button on the gear selector so you have three bars (can be saved with the m buttons too) it’s keeps revs higher and changes are super aggressive and feel instant.

    No free lunch - BMW uses stiff springs to control a heavy vehicle with a high center of mass. I agree these ride too stiff stock, and what is the point of having what’s supposed to be a family utility type car be so stiff? The X3 M40i is much more balanced and makes more sense and has plenty of power.

    Stiff suspension is part of the X3 platform since the very first oneI don't know why people aren't aware of that it's a signature move on their part and it's a vehicle who styling is evolutionary

      Because the people complaining are soft bitches. I wonder what was lost on suspension to make their ass hurt feel better

    BMW can’t win. Make it stiff and people complain. Make it soft and people complain. I have the X3M Comp. It’s not stiff as people say.
