- Classic Game Room starts off Nintendo Week with a review of RAD RACER for the NES, Nintendo Entertainment System. This RAD RACER review shows gameplay of Nintendo's 1987 answer to Sega's Out Run. Which is better? Watch the review and make up your mind. Boasting excellent controls, above average graphics and gameplay as well as a 3-D mode for 3D gaming, RAD RACER is well above awesome, it's RADICAL. Drive a Ferrari 308 Twin Turbo or a Formula 1 F1 race car in Rad Racer through 8 different tracks based on locations around the world. The game has a rocking soundtrack that you can change while driving and features some hype beats that are also rad. If you're looking for a good old school driving game with a lasting "fun factor" then Rad Racer is worth a look. It's totally tubular to the max because Rad Racer is an awesome race car arcade style driving game. Classic Game Room is the ultimate retro video game reviewer, as well as the most radical game review show on earth and all surrounding galaxies, dimensions and undersea environments. Retro gamers and old school video game enthusiasts unite, CGR! This game was made by Square (aka Squaresoft)

Oh. My. God. Instantly transported into my 1987 living room, sat on the floor, not blinking a second while playing this game. So much feels !
Gamol 11... it reminds me of a certain F1 car a Brazilian genius pilot used to win Races at Monaco and Detroit in 1987. He did magic with that car, good times!
While I never felt that Rad Racer for NES was better looking than OutRun for the SMS, I will give it credit for being way faster. Both were great games. I love the "rolling" sound effect when you run out of time and your momentum is just carrying you along. Classic!
A million bonus points to anyone that can mention a unique feature that this game had over every other NES game. (And, I am not talking about the 3-D option, either.)
Well...since I don't have a million points to dish out, I'll just say it...
'This game tweaks with the reset button.' Both, at the very beginning AND again at the very end.
At the beginning, it asks you to press start. Reset and you can't see that.
At the end, there's toony credits. Reset. It does the end scene, again!
That moment where you ran out of gas at 4:25 and just barely managed to coast through the CP brought back fond memories of beating this game back when I was eight years old. Just slowing down helplessly...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE *blueep!* YEAAAH!!!!!
Playing it with the power glove!!
Oh the radical memories :.)
Here is a cheat, on the demo screen when the car is driving itself. Press the B or A button (can't remember really) you will see the rev bar above the screen light up. Each light up represents a level. Then hit select start at the same time and you get to jump ahead to that track. I don't know if that is the right code, but you get to play against other cool cars. Thanks CGR for the flash back :)
love this game,a nes must have!
Oh the memories!! I want this game!
4:28 is how I feel right before pay day
awesome. I see this game for sale all the time in the used game shops around here, and I never think to pick it up. Looks like an awesome party game to me :)
Rad Racer goes good with the NES Advantage it feels like an arcade
hahaha, you beat me to it with the Wizard quote, Rad Racer is a classic
fun fact, Nobuo Uematsu composed the soundtrack for this game the same year as he composed the soundtrack for the first Final Fantasy. 0.0
I agree with you. I enjoy those driving/racing game.
Looks badass very cool.
I just got this game from a thrift store this year and absolutely love this game. I also want a pair of 3d glasses to test out the 3d feature. I tried following a guide I found online on how to create your own with plastic, sharpies, and a glasses frame. It did not work though lol.
ahh yes I remember this game. It been way too long since I last played this one.
Game looks pretty sweet, I'll have to try to emulate this one sometime. I could use some Outrun right now actually...those visuals are just so appealing.
Better than I thought the nintendo could pump out. Very impressive
CHALLENGING AND FIGHTING AND FIGHTING THE CHALLENGE TONIGHT!
one of my first NES game
When is Square Enix gonna re-release this game? They skimped out on the Virtual Console. They need to bring it to Nintendo Switch Online.
this game= totally rad!
Nice smooth track scrolling. Good hill effects. Good lateral sky movement.
Pretty decent for the NES!
Yeah this is one of my favorite oldschool racers for the home consoles next to Top Gear for the SNES. It was always such a thrill to run out of time and then just coast through the next check point and then start speeding again. The crashes were so wild haha
All the levels in the game were well designed and it had a great sensation of speed as well. Great review here and yes the sequel was nowhere near as good.
ya man, i really love Knight Rider on NES a lot, probably as much as Rad Racer lol
@bazfanv2
totally agree! Plus the multilayer background
Rad Racer was awesome, but what about Knight Rider on NES? That game was really awesome too
i always liked this sounds
Well played.
Awesome, this NES game was featured in the classic film the wizard
"Rad" was a cool phrase to use through the 80's,although over-used.But in this case,it's RAD to use it.
I love this game.
True. Knight Rider on the NES was one of my favorites. :-)
The hills are certainly smoother than the jerk-jerk-jerk hills that Master System Outrun was notorious for. Though Outrun 3D improved on it immensely with its lush graphics and grass and oceans.
It has less variety in levels of course.
I don't think they ever made another non-RPG game past Rad Racer II in all these years. Just the three NES action-arcade titles in the earliest days.
This game was present on that movie... The Wizard
i just got rad racer today and the 3d mode just makes it a pain in the ass to play. (even with glasses.)
I always called it a short wire in the radio. Never staying off or keeping tuned into one channel on "every bump". :P
Made better sense if 3-D was a menu option up front and radio was given to 'Select'.
3D is awesome, had my glasses until they broke last month at long last.
one can handle only so much radness until ya reach radical overload.
MEMORIES!
My first ROM for my NES, I only has 5 Years
RADICAL DUDE!
im eating a corndog
I had Al Unser Jr. Turbo Racing
Also F1 Built to Win. Great game that you had to work through cars and upgrades, like GT today.
@@sargondp69 f1 build to win is one of the greatest racing game on nes.
Did you play the game using a power glove?
awesome
I love your game released on 1987
;) nice AVGN quote
I'll tell you one thing about Rad Racer...
...That's one hell of a long one way street they drive on? Do they have one way streets that bridge from State to State in the US? :D
Back then Sega had perfectly good 3D shutter glasses!!
@MisterWilsonTV 3ds has a 3d intesity selector!
He works for Inecom Company, so yes, he probably does get paid for the Classic Game Room videos. He also has worked on various DVD documentories; that you can buy on Inecom's website.
I own the original glasses that came with the box set.
Never got those to work, either. I think that's why Rad Racer II dropped the gimick.
Although the Master System was more powerful than the NES, this actually has better graphics, or at least a much better frame rate, than the MS ports of OutRun and Hang-On. Developing the game from the ground up for the console must have been a huge benefit to Square.
Best racing game ever.
I decided to try out Rad Racer 2 for the NES because of this. If you dig this game, the next one is even better looking and controlling. The only downside is that the music is not as good, and you cannot have both music and the engine noise at the same time. Overall though I would suggest it to anyone who likes old racing games.
@Schlurfilein Bah dammit I was close, it is the sequel but I guess the arcade had a different name. Well glad I could help!
thats why this video said watch in high quality as opposed to hd, but many of his vids are hd
I've always hated how after you crash, it automatically forces you back into the center lane before even allowing you to move again and the timer keeps going the whole time. luckily they fixed that in rad racer 2
hey mark, i beat your 1st stage score by 36 points
:P and that's a dry run after 14 years of not playing this game
They made Driving Emotion Type S for the PS2.
Although it's a good game, I always hated pressing up for the Turbo. My hand would usually get sore afterwards.
... never mind about that last post. i forgot its called ridge racer not rad racer...
@littleboyred1 They do have a megaman arcade game, it was a fighting game. They made a part one and part 2. It's pretty fun to be honest. The remix of the megaman boss stage music is great! Check it out when you get time.
such a parody of OUT RUN for the Sega Master System... same generation, so it makes sense.i mean SEGA had this in the SMS 3D GLASSES, while Nintendo made you use you're own, but it does the 3D effects oh and, @MisterWilsonTV, It should be... or out run, which i would prefer more. thumbs up so he sees it.
amazing it is the voice of slim thug ?? LoL
cool
@TensonFlo it means "cool" or "awesome"
@MegaFan1994 Or King's Knight, or 3D World Runner...They've completely forgotten about all their awesome action games, now it's just RPGs.
This game was so much better than Outrun. It has a flow that's just so smooth. The way the road looks as it's coming at you is so sinewy and has a 3D look that's just not there in other race games. Nothing on the 16 bit machines have anything quite like it. The 3D feature doesn't really work. It's hard to see.
Wow! 0_o The speed and scaling of this game is like AMAZING for an nes game lol its almost better than Outrun for genesis. Its incredibly smooth
Square used to make driving games? You learn something new every day. They'll probably never do something like this again unless it involves chocobos.
Mark didn't play with the Power Glove? What an amateur :P
And, there just weren't very many racing games for the NES. A hand full (Perhaps 10-15) of top down drivers and very few 3-D versions. (4-5...maybe. One of which just cloned the Rad Racer engine.)
As for the 3-D mode: I never had success in getting the third dimension to actually pop...regardless of the television set in use. They're just classic red/blue plastic lense things, as seen from 1950's movie theatres.
It's compatible with it.
Rad Racer is awesome :D
Can't get any more RAD then this
The dude narrating, isnt he the guy from the sound blaster pro demo....
Did I hear the Mission Impossible theme?
Who ever had not played Rad Racer fails as a gamer.
Great review, here in the uk, the nes whas not the huge success it was in usa and japan, when i had mine, there was not many games for it,it took so long for games to come to the uk and europe.
good game
thats rad ;)
I love this game, turbo when you're alone, slow down around cars, and avoid those fucking trees...Hey! Rad racer isn't just rad, it's realistic!
@littleboyred1
They did but in the style on a beat em up or Boss battle type levels.
What ever you want to call it. I don't know. It is a very good game though. :)
***** 5 Stars, Radical!
ok, cool
Nintendo, we need a Rad Racer for Wii.
I have my original copy right next to my NES
You son of a pig
games now a days should have the 3d mode, that would make them much better. just think what gears of war would be like with a 3d mode, and blood spattering out of the screen.
these days in the awesome scale there isn't any radical. it's a car manufacturer now. the tallest in awesome scale these days is Wicket.
press SELECT to enter in ·DRUNK MODE"
+soundspark yeah, i know, but its look like playing drunk
you should be able to buy a pair pretty easily.
So the only existing car on the road is a VW Bettle?
No, the game adds a new car to the traffic/other racers every time you reach a new world.
Challenge and fighting and Fighting the challenge tonight. Everybody's fighting for the Challenge of the fighting and the Challenge and fighting and Fighting the challenge tonight.
Aye?
I got this game for under $5 as $4.50!
Rad Racer Rocked. I beat the first one but not the second.
Doesn't get more 80's than that lol. Blue and red 3d glass, RAD, power glove. lol
