- Classic Game Room reviews TOP GUN for the NES from 1987, a Konami flight action game based on the 1986 movie directed by Tony Scott. Fly your F-14 Tomcat against waves of nameless, faceless enemied in this classic arcade style airplane fighter game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Challenging enemies, missiles which require being shot down and landing make Top Gun a game which won't go down easily. This CGR review of Top Gun for the NES has Top Gun gameplay on Nintendo Entertainment System from the Top Gun videogame cartridge published by Konami.

Man... I *love* the soundeffects in these old games.
thumbs up for Mark being one of the few people who can land the plane in TOP GUN !
THere are very few people alive on the planet that can successfully complete the landing sequence for TOP GUN (NES) Mark, you are one of those few people. Great credit for your skill. you should expand the CGR empire for guides to games, including nailing the landing sequence for this game.
Mark loves the landing sequence in TOP GUN. Man, that's hardcore.
It's because of reviews like this that I sub Mark and James' channels. These two guys are awesome.
Sensational sound!!! Very cool game!!
"This game takes my breath away."
I see what you did there, you sly you...
I love this game I just bought it the other day to have a little throwback fun. After about a week of playing it I finally completed mission four! I was so excited and happy for this was something I never had done as a child. I also love the landing sequence and fueling sequences! Rock on!
My first Nes game!!!
I love the landing sequences too!!! It's challenging but not overly hard
I love his reviews! They are funny and knowledgeable.
Somany memories of wasted weekends. Fantastic game
Great review Mark! gotta watch Top Gun then!
I loved this game! I also liked the landing part. I could do it every time! My friends would call for me just to land for them. Lol
OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think the world is coming to an end. i saw a commercial on a CGR video. on firefox!
Gotta say. The music in this game was spot on.
Well.. the 3 or 4 tracks it has.
People back in 1987 were mailing letters (as email) and were just beginning to watch movies on VHS!!!! Which was brand new back then!!! Computers had less than 10MBs of Ram and 100MB Hard drives!!! So the NES was mindblowing technology back then!!! It was the Playstation 3 of game consoles back then!!!
I still have this and I played it to death, always liked it. Never did get the 2nd one though.
i loved this game top gus was my favorite movie
this and zelda were my first games
Nice landing :D
Mark is just that awesome.
Yes, Rush N' Attack! Great game.
Oh man I played this one.
Faster just to crash the plane and go to the next level. This was such a great game.
I see now. Mark must be a robot programed with the ability to land the plane in Top Gun for the NES. This explains a lot.
ik heb uuren gespeelt deze top gun van inderdaad 1987 zo ongeveer weet ik het niet meer maar heb hem vele male uitgespeelt leuke tijd.
Damn mark your the 1st person I've seen ever land on the aircraft carrier. Also I like the review you make it seem like it's a fun game but challenging, unlike the other review of AVGN where he made it seem impossible to play and frustrating . Fans of both. Just nice to see the other side of things sometimes.
damnit I use to play this game for hours.
Those boss battles were hard.
@ragster2 It's called the "Top Gun Anthem", it's the main theme from the movie :D
This was the only video my father (who was a pilot) would play
This game actually looks pretty awesome
I didn't play this Top Gun for NES but I played another Top Gun for NES which was also made by Konami. I also played Top Gun Fire At Will for PS1. That one was better because you could choose your view and use chaffs and flares to throw missiles off your tail. I've seen the movie. My favorite part was when the pilots were all singing The Everly Bros You've Lost that Loving Feeling to to that Combat Flight Analyzer who was laughing at them.
Of course, Top Gun Fire At Will also had a cover of Kenny Loggin's Danger Zone that wasn't done by Kenny Loggins. The vocalist in that song sounds like Terry Dunn from Berlin, that group that sang Take My Breath Away for the movie.
dat landing....damn it was hard
This game was so hard I spent like half the time just listening to the music and scouring the manual for help.
i love this game for the gameboy i still play it i love the landing sequence i thought that was a pretty good touch een though im not a 90s or 80s kid
The difference between this guy and Rolfe is that this guy knows what he's talking about.
Top Gun is a pretty good game IMO, IRS just really, really hard.
I didn't have this game back in the day :-(
The 7800 has F-14 Tomcat and F-18 Hornet, both very similar games to this.
OMG! Mark should teach the AVGN how to land the plane :P
I'd like to add Contra and TMNT II to the awesome Konami NES games list that Mark said.
I think this is the 1st positive review about this game.
If you liked this game, you should check out Ultimate Air Combat (know by the infinitely cooler title "Aces: Iron Eagle III" in Japan), also for the NES. It was one of the later NES releases, coming out in late '91. It even interspersed the dogfighting missions with isometric bombing missions. And had a plane that could shoot lasers.
I remember my Dad loving this game so much and renting it from the local video store so much that they eventually just sold it to him. What an overlooked classic.
As a kid 20 years ago, I totally enjoyed this on the Famicom, and yeah, it was hard. My cousins couldn't even understand how the inflight refueling minigame went, but me? I nailed that more consistently than the landings! I never got to finish this game until I played it in the emulator years later. And do you know there are two versions of this? The one I played didn't have the briefing map like what you see at 2:53...more like a zoomed up-version of the Straits of Hormuz
good times, tough game but fun for its day. landing & refueling wasn't all that tough once you do it half a dozen times.
i was like 'HOLY CRAP A LANDING SEGMENT!!!' and then i was like' aww man my hot chocolate'
Aww,,, I had really hoped Derek was going to review this like I told him too... Ah well. Good Show Mark!
I had this game once on a Family Computer and it had a music on the game except for the refuel sequences. . .
One of the games that haunted me at night as a child, I could NEVER land the damn plane.
Solaris and Radar Lock on the Atari 2600 are amazing even though it's on more primitive hardware.
@mrgoldfist89 That's Lophatjello.
This is Lord Karnage a.k.a Classic Game Room's Mark.
if this game had an 8bit version of Danger Zone it would be one of the greatest games of all time
Good times!
Good times :D
Mark's right about one thing: EVERYBODY had this game!
@Arexion5293 finaly.... somebody that understands!!! opinion isn't a fact!!!! thank you so much!!!!
i cant stop thinking of the avgn screaming "FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!" when he couldnt land the plane
@funkymonkey0426 I can't stop thinking of the AVGN saying "AAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS" when he couldn't land the plane
I like how this review is the polar opposite of AVGN's. :P
Don't forget your power glove!
I saw this game at play n trade for 99 cents, and I regret not getting it now.
You seem very optimistic about games with a hard difficulty... :D
Are we just going to ignore how realistic it is to take on an aircraft carrier solo?
This game is OP.
I never understood why nobody could land the jet, I always thought it was easy...BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!....I could never, NEVER!!!...do the whole flying refuel thing....
Actually i bet Mark never personally answers anyone here
Hey Mark!!!
Wing Commander for SNES!!!!
@Huskeyyyyy It is :)
aww yes the good old grey label Konami games Lifeforce wa my fav but double dribble and blades of steel also own and maybe track and field 2 if i felt like getting blisters and still loose lol
Man I always wanted a Kenny Loggins soundtrack!!
Mark is in the Danger Zone!
@The3DSdude The AGVN has stated his videos are for entertainment and do not always reflect his true feelings. Top Gun for NES was known for it's landing/refueling sequences which had no explanation as to how you do it. If you didn't figure it out, it could make you hate the game. I don't know anyone that beat Top Gun for NES back before the SNES came out that didn't use a Game Genie.
mark , you can be my videogame reviwer anytime!
@kombatmaster12 yeh I love this part!
i suck alot on this game too much ! so i just listen to it's music :D
I really miss good fighter jet games.
What's up with the current generation of consoles and computers?
@MrFloman100 You can buy a HD PVR or a Capture card
Gonna take you right into the... Danger Zone!
Mark, I am begging you to review Gran Turismo 5!!! Or elso I am going to go crazy and start playing games like Ridge Racer and Sega Rally!!!
How do you video your screen??
Also, to keep on topic, this game is so much easier (but no more easy...) with the NES Advantage.
Oh my god, did I just get a "Skip this ad" button show up on this video?
HALLELUJAH!
mark and avgn should do a duet video
@FrostBiteLogos I think the AVGN just acted like he couldn't because it would be funnier to mock about. XD
***** you should play the two Turn and Burn games, the first is on the gameboy and it's the same thing as this game, but the second Turn and Burn for the super nintendo looks like a 16 bit version of Top Gun, i think you'll enjoy it.
...my father used to help me out when I was a boy during the landing on those small ass aircraft carriers...the funny thing was he crashed in Real life- I guess I should mark up on that Battlefield 3 Super Hornet F-18 if I wanna fly tru in the USAF...
I personally never knew who beat this game.
I never managed to do it.
NEVER!
But okay, I was like 5 - 7 when I played that
That explosion noise... The same sound that plays when you dunk in Double Dribble? Sneaky, Konami.
I can't think of a more lop sided license. This franchise had one...classic movie. It's had a couple imitations. And, more game titles then I can shake a stick at. Companies that want to make a jet flight combat game seem to swarm to this license. And, have been doing so for the last twenty-five years! The latest, being the video mentioned PS3 version. (Which is awesome...with an un-necessary mature rating material.)
Now, I grew up on C-64. Which meant Ace. 1000 times better then NES TG.
@guest2424 No... I don't believe he ever did a video about the Irate Gamer. He responded to a fan's question about it twice, and both were terse answers. And I believe one other time when he was on K-Rock someone asked him about the Irate Gamer, and he hung up on the caller.
I SPEND YEARS TRYING TO LAND THAT PLANE!
I'm glad new bands don't do the entire soundtracks for movies.
Oh and
Queen- Flash Gordon
David Bowie- Labyrinth
This makes me think of AVGN
@funkymonkey0426 this game is now AVGN: The Game
@funkymonkey0426 That's what most people say when trying to land that plane...
Started this game a few days ago. The landing sequence and refuelling are my favorite parts.
The difficulty of the landing sequence is terribly overrated (along with the dam stage in TMNT).
I played this game all of the time and I have NEVER seen level 3.... Is there a level 3?
did I just see a landing? O_o
