    Classic Game Room reviews GRADIUS from Konami released in 1986 on the Nintendo Entertainment System! Gradius was originally released to the Japanese arcades in 1985 and gained immediate attention for its amazing quality and awesome game play. The 8-bit NES version of Gradius looks great and plays well too! Fly the Vic Viper through fantastic space environments and shoot everything that moves in this classic side scrolling shoot 'em up from Konami.

    This is one of my favorite NES games! No, it isn't arcade perfect, but it's pretty badass for a NES release.

    Year I was born and some of my earliest memories are playing Gradius on my grandma's NES. Yes you heard that right I said my Grandma's, she was a PC builder when I was growing up and was also into gaming at 60 something years old. So she always had the latest nintendo system and games and also awesome computers (Windows 3.1 what what). I remember she was the first person on my block to have an SNES and everyone would come over to play Mario Kart.
    But back to Gradius, I looooooove Gradius.

    My favorite is Gradius III for the Super NES. There was just something about the Snes and shooter games (or Shmups as there now called) that was magical & beautiful. The Gradius games provided hours (& years) of replayability, fun, and achievement. Thank you for your review.

    I love Gradius I and II on the NES almost as much as I love the original CGR intro.
    Gradius II in particular was an amazing technical achievement. It features some of the best graphics & music of the 8-bit era IMO. I only discovered them recently but they most definitely hold up as timeless shooters.

    I used to play this game, a classic space shooter for the NES, and it is definitely the hardest.
    I like the sound when a ship loses a life, it's the same sound where a character disappears and reappears as you teleporting into other locations, just like "Star Trek" as Captain Kirk and the crew beams down to teleport a location.

  • @blastcage

    There's an error in the description, Gradius was out in 1986 not 1996

    • @alpals8796
      @alpals8796 Před 9 lety

      The original arcade came out in '85. The NES version came out far later in '96.

    • @blastcage
      @blastcage Před 9 lety +4

      Al Pals Nope, Japanese version came out in April 86, American version in December 86, and European version in November 88. Think about the era, the machine would have been a decade old in 96, the Sony Playstation was out by then

  • @Michirin9801

    Good game, but it takes a LOT of getting used to... Some people hate the Gradius style of upgrades, and I also did, until I gave it a fair chance and now I think it's okay and I really enjoy the games!
    One more thing: EXTREME FLICKERING!!

    • @gamerguy425
      @gamerguy425 Před 9 lety

      +Ruko Michiharu I like Gradius III on the SNES but something about make me lose interest pretty quickly
      I think the problem with the Gradius power up system is that builds you up tremendously as it keeps showering you in little upgrades to the point where you feel invincible then in that overconfidence BOOM. you lose a life and start from the way back to the beginning with nothing but a garbage, slow moving and shooting ship, it doesn't really encourage you to try again.
      Thunderforce's system is much better to me because it leaves you cautious not to constantly use your best weapons, since you don't want to die and lose them. it forces you to use them when they're best suited to the enemy, even something as awesome as the hunter won't protect you from enemy fire, hence I almost never use it without a shield or if it's my last life. Aside from that the base ship is already decent enough, when you die you don't go from a nuclear battleship to a toddler's tricycle, you go from a tank to a military truck basically. Even Raiden trad's system of having that fairy drop a few powerups every respawn does a much better job of encouraging you to continue the fight.

    • @Michirin9801
      @Michirin9801 Před 9 lety

      ***** I can totally see where you're coming from, the Gradius style of upgrades is very harsh with the player, if you die once you might as well start over... And I'll have to agree, Thunder Force's system is better indeed...
      But well, Gradius is the kind of game that requires you to play from the start multiple times and memorize it, it wants you to know the game like the back of your hand and play from start to finish without ever dying... This is definitely NOT for everybody, it requires a lot of dedication and concentration, and I honestly don't have enough of those to beat any of the games... But I still have fun trying!

    • @kevin12567
      @kevin12567 Před 9 lety

      +Ruko Michiharu Ah yes, I remember how 8-bit systems flickered a lot when there was too much going on! I didn't know what caused it back in the day, but I know now it's because the PPU's (Picture Processing Units) could only draw so much (8 8x8 sprites in the NES' case) in a scanline in the time it took the beam to draw said scanline. So the developers had to multiplex these sprites, which was using the same sprite to draw two or more sprites alternating between them, which is what caused the flicker.

    • @Michirin9801
      @Michirin9801 Před 9 lety

      kevin12567 Yeah, I know how it works, the thing is that I like to make fun of the NES for having so much flickering >w>
      But I still love it~

I just beat legit no cheesing double dragon II NES on supreme master mode for the first time this Friday. Being send out of town for a few days for a work job. Watching downloaded netflick movies and episodes on a cell phone placed on a switch hori kickstand while playing crystalis or gradius. Only issue is it will be hot on the 4th floor of that hotel.
