Classic Game Room reviews 1943: THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY on the Nintendo Entertainment System NES. What a SHMUP in the SHMUPS genre! The sequel to the classic Capcom arcade hit, 1942 (released to the arcades in 1984), 1943 featured familiar vertical scroller shooting game action. This shoot em up allows you to play as the hero airplane pilot against waves of enemy bad guys in their fighters, bombers and battleships. 1943 came out in the arcades and saw life on the NES in 1988 with this excellent port of an excellent game. It has similar sounds to Bionic Commando in the NES and similar gameplay to 1942: Joint Strike on the Xbox 360 Live Arcade or PS3. In fact CGRHD reviewed 1942 Joint Strike and gave it high marks for being one of the best shooters our there right now. 1943 is easily on of the best vertical scrolling airplane games on the Nintendo and I used the NES Advantage joystick to get this footage. Oddly enough the original Battle of Midway took place in 1942 and starred Charlton Heston. Many sequels have been made including 1944 The Loop Master. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999-2000, now on DVD. The reviews on the HD series are reviewing PS3, PS2, Genesis, NES, Atari and Xbox 360. XBLA. videos review reviews show wii trailer.

I just bought this game on Friday, and I picked up the NES advantage for free! What a great combination; the turbo speeds on the Advantage really come in handy. It feels just like the arcade version.

The music is not worse than Bionic Commando. Both are great. The "aviation" sounding themes in 1943 speak of old war film soundtracks, but with more beautiful melodies.

Originally composed by one "Jungle Kumi" (Kumi Yamaga), most of the re-scores heard here were done by Hiroshige ("Perorin") Tonomura. I know this, at least, since the NES version's ending theme shares a similar chord progression as the Moon stage theme from DuckTales, and also the sound effect that plays when you collect a power-up is the exact same sound you hear when Mrs. Beakley drops ice cream cones for Scrooge to recover his health.

This is the best shooter for the NES bar none. I consider Contra more of an action/shooter hybrid. The only thing that held this game back was the fact that it was a one player game. Guevara is good too, but the music, weapon upgrades, bosses, and graphics of 1943 were amazing for its time.

@anthonywastrinh what's your point? for years the arcade versions were always superior to the home version but the thing that matter was how close the home version comes to the arcade version given the limitations to the home system it's on. And honestly this is a excellent port of the arcade version and that is all that matters.

Finally bought this game after I, well, finally realized I didn't have it in my collection already! The time to get NES games is now, before they spike up in value any further. I started boosting my NES collecition in 2006 and shouldn't have stopped just a few years later, because some games have gone up 10 to 20 times their original value. Power Blade 2 went from $15 to $225. Ouch. 1943 isn't a rare game, but you never know. Its value went up 5x since 2011. Only from $2 to $10, but damn.

Capcom used to be great at vertical shooters, like on this one. In the late 90's and early 2000's they started making vertical shooters that were quarter eaters and even the home versions were impossible to play without dying a million times even on the easiest seeting. I enjoy games that where if you have skill you can play the game through. The whole screen littered with enemy fire is not fun. I wish capcom would make the shooters more like they used to. Like the people that make Raiden.

Ugh....didn't even mention that P-38 Lightnings were ARMY planes that never flew off carriers. The history on this game was notoriously bad. Really fun game, though. Also, Turbo Key totally cheapens the great challenge balance of this game. It's tough, but not unconquerable.
