Absolutely agree. They just don’t make games this simply challenging any more. But the music... driving your car while listening to this soundtrack is just so damn exciting!

Yeah, tried it sometimes but rated it "awful and not at all 3D" because the flickering did not go away completely, if I remember correctly (after 26 years ^^)

I drove many of a thumb blistering pixelated miles on that game over a 3rd of a century ago. The music still causes my adrenaline to pump up.
This was a cool racing game for the NES back in the day. And to think it was created by the same guys who created Final Fantasy. I think Square need to branch beyond RPGs more often.
Rad Racer is referred to in Japan as Highway Star. The game was published by Square in Japan, Nintendo in North America, and Mattel in Europe.

This game brings back memories. If I remember, this probably was the first ever game I played, as a 2 year old, in a real NES, or Excitebike. I never beat it even today at 26. Quite interesting that the same company who made Final Fantasy among others made this racing game. I think the KM/H speedometer really meant MPH, as the cartridge artwork says "mph", plus 255 km/h = 158.45 mph. The F1 racer makes it feel like Pole Position.
Everytime I hear the 1st BGM of this song, I end up thinking of "Stinkoman 20X6"

The biggest bs thing in this game is instantly crashing if you run into a car directly from behind going too fast. It should just slow you down, what with the sheer amount of cars every freaking where all the time. Sometimes it's near impossible to avoid them.
The first NES game I've ever finished :) I was 10.
That last track is giving me fits right now. You really can't crash a single time & have any hope of winning, & the other cars are just a freaking nightmare! I always end up crashing at least once due to the other cars ramming into me or being in the way. This is not easy...
If you haven’t beaten it, keep your speed up until you find a car going 172-180kph and tailgate him. This shields you from the game spawning super slow cars in front of you. After the 3rd checkpoint you’ll need to pass him and go full speed the remainder of the race.

Iceberg Slim you can say that again I was lucky I got past the first level and after that well I did not beat the second level and then I gave up and never played the game again basically this game made me rage until I couldn't take it no more
The other damn cars are what make it difficult. They are super hard to avoid with the ones that continually try to wreck you lol.

I was just watching one played with the Ferrari and noticed that they both have the same top speed haha. Oh gosh I love 80s games :)))
Running the tracks is no problem in this game. It's the damn other cars that's the problem. They seem to be impossible to avoid at times & it's incredibly frustrating!

I could only ever get to the 3rd stage of the game after that I would either lose or juse get board of the game and played something else like 1943 or Bionic Commando XD

Fun game but a hard son of a gun
Issue 1 the timer, it gives you just the right amount of time especially when you get in later stages (stage 5)
Issue 2, the biggest obstacle here is the cars you bump into, why this is an issue is because in later stages there's no room for errors because when you crash your vehicle cant move till it centers itself eating up your time
You deserve a medal if you beat all 8 courses

Sara Lili Course 3 (Grand Canyon) is where the difficulty really ramps up with all the stalled/slow cars and the last-second lane switching. The last 2 courses if you even crash once you're just about screwed unless you gun it everywhere.

When I was a kid, one day I booted up the game, and instead of the title screen, it started with the ending sequence. Some kind of glitch happened. That was the only time seeing it, the gane was otherwise too hard for me, lol

Rad Racer was developed by the exact same team that would later develop Final Fantasy.
Yeah. Shocking to see a company known for lengthy RPGs made a RACING game...
This was actually Square's best selling NES game, it outsold Final Fantasy

@DrewDracoSune Interesting tidbit: The music the Chaps Bros used in that cartoon is not the original you hear here, but was actually a cover done by Tony Thai, using a separate NES soundfont he ripped from Street Fighter 2010. Even Tony himself isn't sure why this is.

PoseMotion Only time you get close to that is stage 7 (Seaway in Typhoon). But even that is similar to stage 1 (Sunset Coastline) in that it's just day turning night turning day for the most part.
