The first game designed by Takashi Nishiyama, who would later become the creator of Kung Fu Master, Street Fighter and Fatal Fury. He is truly the Miyamoto of arcade games.

This game reminds me of my uncle. This was one of his favorite arcade games, I teached him how to use emulators and installing Mame roms so he could play it some time to get the memories.
Unfortunately, last year in 30th of June he passed away because of a heart attack. I started having depression since then. Fortunately I'm feeling better now, but his death won't get out of my head.

fun fact: It's designer (Takashi Nishiyama) would later be one of Street Fighter co-creators and also would be an important member of SNK Neo Geo era, producing and idealizing many games, such as Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting and The King of Fighters. Later on he left SNK to create Dimps (3rd party developer of many Bandai-Namco games and SF4/SFV), which he's the president until this day.

I was completely addicted to this game when I was a kid in the 80s. It's great to read all of these comments and to think how the game was played at the same time in different parts of the world with the same enthusiasm, never thought of that back then when I played, spending lunch money, it, was never enough, and I was gooood :)

Put lots of money into this game in the early 80:s at the local petrol station (where a bunch of arcade and flipper games where in a sideroom). Good memories. As where Galaxians, Zaxxon, Decathlon, some car-racing games (viewed from above) and loads of other games over the years at that station (and also a local restaurant/grill)...
    Good memories.

One of my favourite in the 80s. I lost a fortune playing it in the games room in my neighbourhood in Poland. Some curiosities:
    - I was able to pass rolling balls on full speed in O-T section, as well as tanks in T-Z
    - Sometimes we were able to reach 58 seconds in A-E section of the beginner course. Normally driving at full speed all the time gave you 59 sec. but jumping during the start gave you this extra second (or maybe it was a different trick?)
    - We were always curious what was the algorithm of awarding points after shoting a small space ship that you needed to jump over (A-E section in the champion course). From 500 to 1000 points but was it pure random?
    - The guy that owned the games room saw that we excelled at Moon Patrol spending more and more time on a single credit and once he disabled the low speed, so that you could drive only at medium and fast speed. What a mean guy! I.e. it was impossible to pass the second minefield in J-O section because the mines were too close to each other to jump over on medium speed. But we managed to jump in the critical moment two mines at a time at full speed! :-)
    Hey, any other tricks?

The game the started it all for me ...I blame this game for my expensive game addiction short story time back in 1986 I was around 8 or 9 years old my parents owned a small book/magazine store front in downtown queen street toronto canada directly next door was a oldskool pizza parlor that had two arcade cabnets moon patrol Kung fun master everyday me and me older sister would go there eat pizza and play for a couple hours...
on somedays I would loot my parents piggy bank change jar or go through there sweaters rob them of there pocket change and sneak out without my sister and get caught and grounded all the time ...pretty much it all went downhill after that I became a atari 2600 nintendo coleco vision loving arcade junkie and I'm still a dweeb for video games till this day ...
yeah sure I'm into ps4 vr switch and newer shit etc.etc blah blah but the older games from my generation holds a special place in my heart I now hold a huge massive collection of retro game collection NOT A BRAG AS IT MAY SEEM I consider it just as bad as hoarding I'm definitely up there as much as you see on avgn channel james Rolf my wife wants to kill me lol I kinda wish I was exaggerating sometimes only close friends only know about it it's to a point I get a little embarrassed to let certain family members come over. it's a love hate thing

I just noticed something after many years it never dawned on me that the song for this game is almost identical the James Brown's Soulful Christmas song

I remember playing this on an arcade cabinet back in the day. I could never get too far because the older and bigger kids would shove the smaller kids out of the way so they could play

Strange. I remember grownups putting their quarter on the screen to show they got next game.

@@sandal_thong8631Agreed, that was the usual arcade etiquette. Lining up quarters on the ridge of the screen or the top panel of the cabinet.

Just came from a review that mentioned enemies he didn't get to. He said there was a 3-minute rule for arcade operators, meaning they didn't want players to last more than 3 minutes so the game would get super-difficult just before then. However, the 3-minute mark here starts at the minefield (assuming you haven't lost a life yet), which may be difficult for some; the 5-minute mark starts the rolling boulders and the 6-minute mark is the tanks, that got me. The trick however, was being able to continue by putting in another quarter. I supposed that meant if you only lasted another minute then your second (and third) quarters would bring down your average to the 3-minute mark.
