- There are LOTS of toilet options for vanife from no toilet to DIY to cassette to over $1000 composting toilets. But there are some new kids on the block that are really interesting options. In this sponsored video I review one of the newer options - the Trelino Composting Toilet. I think it could be a great option if you don't want a permanently installed toilet or you just wanna hit the easy button!

I’ve seen this reviewed by a few vanlifers, and this is the best one so far. You’re always so authentic, it’s your super power! You give tips from actually using it, clean out, etc. it doesn’t sound like a scripted advertisement.
I appreciate how reflective, articulate and respectful you are. This looks like a good system though it sounds kind of pricey, $500? But it does have that ‘complete system’ value. As a long time follower, and once a quick to buy consumer, I feel compelled for those who are needing to get on the road first and figure things out as they go to share what I’ve been using ~a $2.00 small, narrow trash can with a rolled edge at the top(its comfortable to sit on) and I use two grocery plastic bag(I know, wasted plastic but cheap, I do try to make up for it by using ‘unplastisized’ veggies when I can). I just tie it up and toss it like a diaper. I too always separate my pee with a large mouth lidded vessel (Mine had dog treats and holds a half gallon). I’m using my precious resources to address high priority items first (like the AC that you had Kerry share) and will evolve as time goes by with items that I can get away with ‘making do’. I really want to meet you in person someday and understanding that vanlife is a process is part of the journey! Thanks Joni, fun seeing you. In front of the camera!!
This looks like a good toilet system. I have found that just laying toilet paper in the bottom of the container and then after you have finished, just cover the contents with toilet paper. Take the container to a public toilet and empty it. Works the same as the pellets but with this idea you don't need to buy anything but toilet paper.
I haave the smaller version of the Trelino toilet and I love it. I picked the smaller toilet because I have a minivan and needed the space. I highly recommend Trelino, it is so comfortable and clean to use.
I use composting bags with the smallest Trelino (the model with the self closing lid) and I had a bit of condensation in the bucket and a bit on the bag. I purchased some small animal hemp bedding and put a layer of the hemp in the bottom of the solids bucket. Now the bottom of the composting bag is sitting on hemp. I use hemp or coco coir inside the bag (depending what I have on hand) and cover the solids completely. It cut down on the moisture, so I can still use composable bags. You might want to try hemp as you don't need to add any water, just use dry, right out of the bag. Helped keep the solids bin dry and I just emptied when at capacity. Great review BTW!

I am hoping to live nomadic but frugally. This looks like a good affordable option.Seems many companies are aware of the nomadic nation that is growing & they are trying to adapt to the needs. I think as we age we think smarter & think in options just in case. I dont want to go potty in the forrest & meet a bear 🐻 or if i get a stomach bug I dont want to do the 50 yard dash into a gas station and have to wait in line😉❤
More affordable to buy a $30 toilet seat, set it on a simple wooden box you build, get an "Ikea trash bin" and a jug. $100-ish
Condensation - Try covering the seat, before putting on the lid, with a piece of flexible cutting board, cut to fit. Or cut it to just inside the poo bucket opening. For the latter, glue a marble or something similar to it to help pick it up when you need to go. Unless you use a large amount of the equivalent to cat litter, all open air access to waste will have condensation issues. I use a Reliance Luggable Loo and a Reliance Hassock (same premise). Hassock is in one of our bathrooms, for use when the grid goes down or the well pump fails. I'm currently using a corn based cat litter product, that works well. Have heard that horse pellets from Tractor Supply work even better.
Is the underside of your wood lid sealed? If not, put several coats of poly or marine varnish on it, regardless of how you decide to decorate the top. The wood needs to be sealed to prevent mold and other nasty problems.
I got the evo version as I was worried about condensation on the inside of the wooden lid. However, the wooden lid sure is nice-looking. Mine replaces a porta potti / bucket combo I had been using. I know this is strange, but I think my new toilet is so beautiful!
If you want to keep that nice, natural look on the wood when you seal it, I've had great results using Vermont Natural Coatings PolyWhey in semi-gloss. It looks like natural wood but has no fumes and dries quickly. It darkens older wood and reddens cedar, but I suspect that's just the restoration of lost moisture. New, natural birch and pine looked the same after coating. It's made from the by-products of cheesemaking (whey).

What I do after using(with the bucket method) is to place some clean toilet paper inside the base of the diverter to keep moisture from coming up into the bucket. Also bagging the poop right away and putting in the trash or appropriate container outside the van keeps any moisture from building up.
The wooden top is cute, but I'd think, not a good idea for a wet area. Even if it doesn't get wet, the condensation would be a problem. I would definitely coat my with some type of sealant. I have a Tetford that I love. It flushes. Great review video.
Leaving the wooden seat cover is left natural so that you can seal it the way that you want.
Good review. I’m been considering upgrading from a Thetford Cassette toilet . They have a host of challenges but I found it works better the a bucket and pee bottle.
I bag and trash daily. Not sure how holding on to those bags for days would work for me .

Thanks! I had wanted to purchase a C-Head, but they went out of business. This looks just as simple and affordable. A small battery operated computer fan might help with the moisture. Right now I use your old method- pee w/funnel into laundry jug. Again thanks for doing this review.
I've just recently incorporated Trelino's 2.6 gallon urine collector into my diy composting/separator toilet. I got tired of dumping the urine daily. Great products and much more affordable. :)

I have had problems with wetness in the rear container as well, still do occasionally (a woman issue), but it has greatly improved after I started using a cheap laddle with a couple strategically placed and sized holes and a slightly shortened handle to direct the liquid where it needs to go, even after the stream ends. I press it against my body, making it less likely for anything to escape in the rear. Anyway, great review. It is one of the solutions I am considering for my build.
I looked at the Trelino EVO small ($470) and the OGO Nomad ($199)…Both small no trap door urine separating. The Trelino has a container for the poop collection and the OGO uses a bag (you could put a plastic container in it). They both are suitable, so it comes down to price for me.
I've been wondering about this toilet, but I didn't know any of the other reviewers and so could only trust them so much, whereas I've seen loads of your videos :)

This looks like a great product that needs some minor improvements. Reshaping the upper urine container for better pouring is excellent and rethinking how the one way valve is secured is another. My recommendation is to make the lid out a "plastic" material like what is used in a OXO cutting board, thicker of course. This would be much easier to clean, no splinters, resistant to liquids and more sanitary
Yeah, but then it is not wood.
That's exactly my point. Joni says at about 1:05 that the cover is unfinished wood and that she got a splinter. At 8:49 she mentions the moisture build up, which may be because of the compostable bags. The point being that moisture on untreated wood is a recipe for trouble. You could certainly sand the rough edges and finish the would with an appropriate sealer or stain and still have the esthetic qualities of wood. My suggestion of using a "plastic cutting board material" is just my thoughts and to me a bit more practical. Please use whatever material you prefer. @@RollOnBusin

Boxio is very similar at lower price. I’m pleased with it so far. The Trellino does look to be more nicely finished.
I wonder if horse bed pellets instead of coconut fibers would be better at holding onto the moisture? Hopefully the manufacturer will make improvements based on your observations. Great review
My friend discovered all you have to do with any portable potty is put a teaspoon of the biogel and it solidifies up to a gallon and more of urine and then take the bag and discarded with no smells no leaks it's wonderful.
Excellent review. We have a Trevino Evo-M in our van and an Evo-L in our trailer. This is the best function, cost reasonable solution we’ve found. Must follow local laws and regulations on disposal. BLM and NPS publish guidance for the liquid and solid waste disposal.
I have a Trelino, it's the smaller version, and haven't had the issues you described. I wonder if the wood is part of the problem with the condensation. I just got some of their new litter to try and cannot wait to test it out in a couple weeks when I go to Sum of Us Fest.

A simple plastic box that may or may not get wet depending on how you use it, no power, no fan, I’ll save the grand there are a lot of much cheaper options that do the very same thing. Composting, I think not no more so than a 5-gallon bucket might be
I think it’s condensation, my boxio does the same thing. This looks much better sturdier and more comfortable than the boxio.
This was a very good video. You're a natural. The toilet looks likes it's heavy plastic. Plastic always attracts moisture. I really like the simplicity of the toilet, but it seems like the pee holder is too small to last for very long.
Yes, I wondered about the amount of urine the container would hold. It does look small to me as well.
Great review. You had a good suggestion for the design of the urine compartment (for emptying). In my opinion however, the price of the unit is twice what it actually is worth. I'll have to pass.
I’ve considered this toilet for a while. It’s simple and good quality. But after spending a couple of months bagging my waste using liners in my RV toilet , I think I’d prefer the Ogo separating toilet. I’d rather empty the solids out once every few weeks instead of daily. Just my preference.

Try using bedding pellets. They will soak up a lot of moisture.

Thank you for showing us that you re-use your poo bags! I see so many youtubers using multiple plastic bags and throwing them out after every poop! This is NOT good for our environment. I have a simpler toilet than yours because my rig is much smaller, but I use the bag multiple times using crushed pine pellets to cover and hide the smell. I've never tried your idea of dumping in a vault toilet, but might give it a try! Thanks!

Are you using the lid that comes with the poo bucket? That might cut down on the moisture. I use horse pellets from tractor supply. $8 for 40#. Great van!

My thing is it's one thing to get rid of the bag into a trash big. But dumping the urine would be to obvious in a public place I rather just have a bucket with a liner, cause by the time someone notices, your not around.

I’ve seen reusable silica packets that absorb moisture. The ones I’ve seen have to be plugged in to dry back out again. I don’t know what your power situation is, but wonder if something like that could be placed in the box to absorb moisture.

Looks functional, but way too many pieces requiring hand touching.
I have a different brand but I have to sit a little more forward then I normally would while I pee to keep the poo section dry. Maybe that is why its wetter? Also I'm curious, if you like your paper system, why did you switch to coconut coir? Why aren't you using the shredded paper in the new one? Thanks for the video.
I've been using the coconut coir because that was what they recommended.
I dont see why this needs to be so complicated, a simple bag and bucket with some absorbent material is all that is needed. just double bag your bucket and close off the inner bag after each use, dumping the inner bag when you have the chance (anywhere with baby changing facilities)
