Thanks for the video, which is an excellent summary and review of the Trelino Toilet -- and it also reflects our own experiences with this toilet.
We got our Trelino Evo mid-size toilet just before our recent 2 1/2-month trip to the southwestern United States. We used it in our 2021 Aliner Ranger 12 camping trailer. In the past several years, we have used a fold-down camping toilet, a Camco flushing toilet, and a folding Reliant tripod toilet. The portable camping toilet was 8" high, which was difficult for my wife of 70+ years to use. It also had limited capacity. The Camco flushing toilet was bulky, it used considerable water, and it stopped flushing and leaked when the seals failed after only a few weeks on the road. The folding Reliant tripod toilet worked better than the others, but the plastic leg mounts began to crack, so it was not stable or safe at that point.
Our Trelino has none of these problems. It works flawlessly and my wife loves it. Though my wife is the one who uses the toilet, I empty my urine bottle into the toilet each morning. I also use it as a seat when I put on my boots. I weigh 250 lbs and the Trelino holds my weight while I am shifting around on it with no problems at all. It is very solid. I would not fear standing on this unit, but I would lay a 3/4" piece of plywood on the lid before I did so. Why tempt fate?
When we travel, the toilet slides under our bed and is held in place with some short tension rods between the cabinets in front of the bed. We often traveled over rough, teeth-jarring roads with waste in the toilet and had no problems of any kind.
We used coconut coir, potting mix, and clay-based cat litter as drying media in our Trelino. All worked well, but I would not recommend cat litter because it has its own unpleasant smell. Other than that, the Trelino was odor-free even in 90+ degree (F) weather in Utah and Arizona. We also used recycled plastic bags from Trelino, or similarly-sized bin bags, for solid waste becauses the compostable bags seemed to break down a bit too quickly. We just didn't feel confident with them.
As shown in the video, we used a vinegar/water solution to keep the urine diverter fresh after each use. Urine salts sometimes concentrate in the liquid tank, but commercial strength (30%) vinegar or urine descaler cleans the blue tank nicely. If a more thorough wipedown of the toilet was in order, we cleaned it with bleach-based cleaning wipes, which worked perfectly.
Our used solid waste bags were tied up and placed in our regular garbage bags, which were disposed of in campground facilities as needed. The urine tank was emptied and rinsed as needed in a campground toilet. If a vault toilet was used, I took along a bottle of water to rinse out the blue tank. Regular maintenance of this toilet is simple and easy. We disposed of waste toilet tissue in our regular garbage bags rather than in the Trelino. We did so both to save waste capacity and to ensure good contact between the composting medium and the solid waste in the toilet. This worked well for us.
We highly recommend a Trelino toilet. It is a good size for an RV or trailer and is easy and comfortable to use. It is easy to maintain, easy to store, very durable, and (considerably) more affordable than other commercially available urine-diverting toilets. It is also discreet and attractive. No doubt, this toilet was a significant investment for us, but we would buy it again in a heartbeat. Thumbs up all around! 👍👍
    Thanks for the video!

Excellent summary. Immediately after seeing your first Trelino video, we purchased an EVO-L for our travel trailer. We had a traditional trailer toilet and black tank. We will never go back. The Trelino performs exactly as you describe. Our urine bottle “level meter” is the sound as urine drops into the container. Loud=empty, no sound=time to empty. We also purchased an extra urine container. We use a combination of coconut coir and horse stall absorptive compressed sawdust pellets from a farm stores. We’ve found your vinegar recommendation to be right on. We like EVO’s convenience so much when traveling, so we purchased an Evo-S for our van. We rate our Trelino Evo a 5-star, as we also do for your excellent video. Thanks for sharing your first video and for your Evo experiences.

As a retired public dunny cleaner [ Oz toilet] I can tell you they are not cleaned often enough & unfortunately some adults are still not toilet trained. So having your own portable is a must.
When you're sleeping in a van the last thing you want to do is get dressed and go outside in the middle of the night. I just use a 2lt detergent bottle with a handle for a pee - you don't want to drop it.

I use a 5 litre water bottle Bruce. I can sit on my seat and it rests on the floor...saves me from dropping it like I almost did once Oh' I also add a little bleach to the bottle to begin with and give the bottle a shake (with the lid on of course) after first pee, this eliminates any urine smell from then on 👍
I'll try a baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and dish detergent mix next time though because they're more environmentally friendly and supposed to work.
I didn't find that vinegar worked like a squirt of bleach, perhaps I didn't use enough.

This toilet was around $300 about 9 months or a year ago, the compact short model, now it’s close to $600. Nothing justifies this kind of inflation. It’s a separation toilet, use the right chemical to help with both 1 or 2, and it’s basically a separation toilet, nothing more. Maybe the seat is more comfortable, but I personally want to spend as short of a time on any toilet if I can help it.

Well done, a difficult topic presented factually and without any yuck or toilet "humour" We are extremely pleased with our separating toilet of a different make that looks like a regular toilet but we incorporated it into our bench set up. i think low volume 3D printer items are invariably going to be expensive but (like solar panels) it's enabled us to stay on small 5 van sites and other "no facilities" overnight spots which save a huge amount on "all facilities" campsite fees with ehu/toilets. Pays for itself fairly quickly then. I did learn something, the vinegar/water spray. i'm adopting that idea, thanks!

Looks like a good design. For our compost bin we use 2 compost bags with paper then sawdust in the bottom, We get saw dust kitchen or cabinet makers. A couple of drops of aromatic oil in the vinegar and water spray bottle will help it smell even nicer. Mixing the solid and liquid together creates anaerobic bacteria like in a swamp, so better not to. If you triple rinse the urine container, then rinse with the cleaning fluid, then leave to dry the container should smell less. Empty more often, then then compost bags will survive and can be put into dump point compost systems.

I learned a great deal especially the comparison on the different options including your pros and cons from your perspective. I agree with you about conservation of water, chemicals(no-no and an additional cost), convenience, safety issues late night or if you are traveling in area that you are uncomfortable going to the bathroom in, and the cleanliness factor or lack thereof in public bathroom. I am glad you talked about female concerns- sanitary and tampon disposal and overall body positioning. Questions: What's the proper way to clean it and disinfect it? Can you use bleach or other household detergents? What happens if you get a leak in the outer box from normal wear and tear or a defect? What type of warranty does Trelino offer because it ain't cheap? Can we get it here in the US? Should you buy the size based on the size of your butt if you are big person or medium sized or little bottomed person or based on usage (medium for 2 people; large for a family or 4 or something like that)? I am new to your channel. Can you go over refrigeration ideas for your camper van and how and what do you use to cook? I am very interested in watching the WIFI internet (Starlink) video as I understand that internet access is inconsistent and problematic here in the US for folks whose job requires consistent high speed internet access. I subscribed and liked for sure!

Because of you, I now have a handy vinegar spray bottle, and a very pretty, dedicated, and discrete shopping bag for transport 🙏. I look forward to swapping out my current one for a Trelino 🥰

But it's not a 'compost' toilet because it goes into a landfill before composted and adds to the ozone by creating gases, so it maybe convenient but is it really environmentally friendly?

Great review/summary. I have been looking to swap my cassette toilet for a composting loo and Trelino definitely ticks all the boxes for me. The only thing that I was concerned about was the lack of being easily able to see when the urine canister is full but this will not put me off as the positives outweigh any negative.

Thanks for a very informative review.
If it was just me in a camper van, the Trelino would be my first choice.
Over here in the States, we use an installed toilet with holding tank in our travel trailer.
We dump the waste at “full hook-up” (water, electric, and sewer) RV parks.
Mrs. Hare and I can usually go for a full week before needing to dump the tank.
I like your system better than ours, though.

I have one and it works well. I’m just coming to the end of three months in Scandinavia and use it all the time the time. I’d agree the urine capacity is limited. I also feel slightly uncomfortable about leaving all these bags of human waste in bins around the country. I know I put dog poo in bins and don’t think twice. My other comment would be if you plan to stay on stay every night or c a camp site with chemical toilet disposal facilities a normal chemical toilet is probably easier but f you plan to be off grid sometimes then the separating
    Toilet is more convenient

    • @ruthaisling
      @ruthaisling  Před 2 měsíci

@@ruthaisling fabulous, Norway is spectacular. I have a Ford transit custom with a high top not dissimilar to your van. Channel tunnel, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany up into Denmark and across the bridge to Sweden, up through Sweden and Finland to the top of Norway (Nordkapp) then all the way back down through Norway to Kristiansand to catch the ferry to the top of Denmark etc. will have been away 11 weeks when I get home. All very easy and safe, took my little dog Captain as navigator. Keep up the great videos.

But urine is harmless to dispose of discretely on the land.
Why on earth pay to flush it away?
For men,a decent large bucket with a proper toilet seat fitted will be fine.
A bin bag and a bag of sawdust works great, and a nice line smell from the sawdust too.
I have often used this method.
