I like that the Trelino doesn't look anything like a toilet, especially for a small van space.
That's because it's an expensive bucket 🪣
The Wrappon Trekker dry flush is similar to the Laveo. It’s made in Japan and is the Lexus of dry flush toilets. It heat seals the plastic waste bag instead of twisting it to seal. The per flush is less then half the Laveo but the unit is about $600-700 more at around $1600. Like to see a comparison between these two dry flush toilets. We’ve used both and prefer the Wrappon slightly vs the Laveo
Good to know. We’ll look into it.
No power required for the Trelino is a huge differentiator, in my opinion. Combine that with a much much lower "cost per flush" (no proprietary bags required) then the Trelino is the clear winner.
My preference is a seven gallon plastic utility bucket with a Leaktite or Gamma Seal screw-on top. To use, I unscrew the top, add a kitchen garbage bag, and put a section of pool noodle or pipe insulation round the edge for comfort. And the bucket comes in handy for other stuff as well!
Been using the immediate disposal method for poop on our sailboat for years. No holding tank to worry about. We use grocery bags and put the used bag into a used potato chip or corn chip bag to keep the odors away. Have you ever smelled potato chips in the snack isle? No because all the bags are airtight. We just save the used chip bags and they work very well if we can't get to a disposal place right away. Trelino for us in our current van build. And.....thanks for the great comparison video....well done.
We've been using the midsized Trelino Evo in our Aliner Ranger 12 for about a month now. Typically, for two people, we empty the urine pail every morning and rinse it out. We have used the Trelino for number 2 frequently. It works very well with a composting or drying material. We've used coconut coir, clay-based kitty litter, and now we're using potting mix, which works perfectly. There have been no problems with odors in our trailer at all with either urine or stool. The key is to keep the two of them separate and the Trelino works exceptionally well for that. My wife is the one who uses the toilet and she loves it. [I empty my pee bottle into the Trelino each morning.] The unit is compact and fits under our bed when we travel. When we are camping, it fits in front of the door and serves as a separate little bathroom. Lastly, the Trelino is far less expensive than similar diverting toilets. Even so, it's well made, strong, and durable.
We highly recommend the Trelino -- with which brand we have no affiliation.
Great info. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent review! I went with the Trelino because the bags you can get anywhere (you mentioned you can even use grocery bags). With the Laveo, you have to purchase their proprietary cartridges, which can be an issue if you are traveling and you run out. That was the #1 con for me against it.
Hands down, the separation of liquid and solids make the Trelino the winner!
We have a Nature's Head in our trailer and I'm probably going to change to the Trelino. The Nature's Head is not easy to dump and clean. It's heavy to drag out, and a job to clean. The urine bottle is hard to clean as the hole is small but the Trelino's urine bottle has a big opening, you can put your hand it (with a glove :) and are able to scrub it.
I think the Trelino will work well for you. Happy camping!
We've had a Laveo for two years and it has been great, a bit expensive but it has been reliable and well support by Laveo when there have been issues. I highly recommend the Laveo.
None of them "compost".
For the Trelino odor & absorption use pine nugget bedding from Tractor Supply. Cheap. Odor absorbing.
A urine diverter insert can be bought for under $100. Two containers, some plywood and a toilet seat you're done for about $150. 👍
I wish people would call them separation toilets rather than composting toilets, but I guess "composting" sounds more eco-friendly. We've used the pine bedding pellets for ages and it does a great job - definitely recommend!
It can compost if you use a biodegradable bag. Of course making something is cheaper than buying it from someone. That's obvious but people still eat out at restos anyway.
In my camper van I use an easier, low tech and inexpensive toilet solution. I line my barrel-with-lid hassock style portapotty with a plastic bag, add a cup or so of horse-stall grade pine pellets and get 1-3 days use camping solo. The pine pellets fluff up to sawdust which absorbs urine, with no odor at all. I sometimes add PooPowder as a supplement. There's no messy liquid to deal with. It's easy to dispose of the resulting non-toxic sawdust in any basic trash bin. The pine pellets are very inexpensive at about $6 for a 40 lb bag which lasts a long time. I divide the bag of pellets into smaller zip locks to tuck away in nooks and crannies around the van.
We used Thetford porta potties for 26 years, but now use Trelino and love it. Easy to empty the urine container and we use single use composting bags for the solids. Solids bag goes in the garbage. As a male I still use a pee bottle and my wife uses the Trelino. We use a mixture of vinegar and water in a spray bottle to squirt the urine capture area after each use.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
I bought a Trelino and I love it! In my Sprinter.
Good choice!
I use a bucket with a biodegradable plastic bag and kitty litter, Than dig a hole and berry it, I have a separate bucket for pee and put it on trees if there are any or just on the soil, it works for me ❤
I love my Laveo. It's sturdy and I don't feel like I have to do a balancing act to use it. I have to use the bathroom at least once (sometimes twice) a night. I like using the powder that converts liquids into a gel. The product is also great at removing the smell. Then I flush in the morning. The replacement cartridges are expensive but in a pinch I'll use heavy duty bag liner and powder to convert liquids into a gel.
I agree about the assessment about the mylar bags. It sounds great, but sometimes, you'll end up with a random tear or hole. Out of the 15 or so cartridges, I've only had one be bad/tear. The liner bag kept everything contained though.
I highly recommend the Laveo. Even with the cost, I love this option the best. I hope they come up with a better environmental option though. All in all, great product!
Thanks for the great video!
Excellent review we’re trying to decide what to put in our new van. Thank you again.
Glad it was helpful!
Another great review video. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
This was very informative! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
thanks for the review
I'd go for the trelino!!!
One way to conserve how much one uses w any toilet system is for men to use a 64 ounce Gatorade bottle when on the road. Need to pee in the night? Just have a bottle w the cap right next to you. I do this often when traveling.
I use a 5 litre water bottle and add a tiny squirt of bleach, I set it on the toilet lid, perfect height for standing. It's been working great for me this way for several years...I have a spare backup bottle in case I am not in a situation to empty for a day or two.
Another awesome review Jeff!!!! I was absolutely sold on the laveo but now you got me thinking about the laveo....esp for my vanlife style and expectancies!!!! Im still working on my list of questions and topics for our eventual next phone session!!! Real Estate season is in full swing here in Naples, FL so im slammed....but still focusing on my vanbuild w motorcycle!!!! You and Lisa are doing some great improvements these days!!!! F
Thanks. Looking forward to working with you to build your van.
Thk u for sharing your a sweet heart ❤️ I love all information. 😊
The BOXIO is similar to theTrelino and only $199 on Amazon .i also have the Boxio and the toilet up height extender. love it.
I have a Thetford cassette in my van. Never smells, easy to empty. Never leaks.
Thank you
Just discovered this toilet while looking for something for our overland camping setup. Would have loved for it to have some kind of carrying bag for those not looking to use it in a camper / van, but I bet I can find a bag that'll fit!
Trelino wins. The KISS aproach is evident.
Thanks
Very Convenient,but very Pricey ✌️🌻🇺🇸🤩
I really like the simple, effective design of the Trelino but they are pretty expensive.
Agreed!
£20 for something similar in UK!
@@user-ku7bt4ge9bdo you have a link?
@@user-ku7bt4ge9b what is it called?
These products have a huge price discrepancy in Oz. Trelino @ approx $450 and dry flush $2000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unfortunately not competing products in the Oz market. Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Sorry to hear that
I really like the Trelino and am thinking of getting one
Good choice.
Great review as always
Thank you very much! This was very helpful. I don't even own an RV yet but am researching. Sometimes people showing their RVs don't reveal too much about this most pertinent aspect of life on the road! I like also that the Trelino doesn't require any power. I have heard that Cinderella incinerating toilets are approved now for Rvs. (at least in the U.S.). I am very curious about this toilet and how much energy it draws etc.
We have tried both the Dry Flush and the Trelino Evo in our van. Hands down the Trelino wins.
The Dry Flush does work well, but its expensive and will only last about 1 week before you need to empty.
I do disagree re re only using the Trelino for #2 emergencies. We use our Trelino full time for #1 and #2. No smells, no mess and super easy to empty.
We can go about 2 weeks before we need to empty the solids. After each #2 use we throw in a handful of Mini Hemp Stalks (rabbit bedding).
OH and when we changed to wet wipes rather than toilet paper it's a game changer. We put the wet wipes in a tiny small bin. Wet wipes allow the solids container to last a lot longer.
Urine separating is the way to go. So much easier and cleaner than other toilet types.
Good info. Thanks for sharing.
Don't forget to add a white vinegar into urine container in Trellino, like a quarter of a cup. It will never smell. Never.
I use a cheap pine disinfectant from the supermarket that is cheaper than vinegar and has the added benefit of a nice smell
LOVE the Dryflush !! That terrine is one step above a 5 gallon bucket , nothing special about it at all !
Exactly. A 5 gallon bucket with a plastic grocery bag.
I could`nt have said it better myself.
The Trelino is definitely a winner. It needs one improvement. A cutout that allows the urine container to be visible so that seeing how full the container is can be determined without taking the container out.
Nice review. Based on my field experience (full timer), I find it absolutely essential to have a fully functioning compost toilet with a vent fan. I initially built a Trelino type set up (no vent fan), this severely limits its potential, the smell and inconvenience for one time usage bags gets super annoying. I see the potential of adding a vent fan to the Trelino and modifying it as a full blown compost toilet. On a side note, if the difference between a regular compost toilet like Nature's Head vs Trelino is only $200, I'd go with Nature's Head.
Why anybody uses a compost toilet without a secured, odor prevention lid is beyond me. Not complicated.
Trelino 👍 add cat litter no smell. I will buy the Trelino. Cindy 👍
Good choice!
Alfalfa pellets from the feed store do a wonderful job on smell and absorption, and are way more bio sensitive than the clay of cat litter.
Another brand to check out is the Ogo Nomad…like the Trelino it is a separating toilet But only $199
Looks good.
Only thing lacking is a toilet seat that fastens to NOT allow smells escape. Pretty simple.
It would be nice to get exact dimensions of that trellino openings and real life feedback on the anatomy competability to one successful evacuation! Everything else is available on their website
I have seen other reviews saying dry toilet don't smell with cedar sawdust or other material. I still researching what I want for my cargo camper conversion
For just my husband and myself I choose the Trelino. If we are having others using the toilet, I can see where the dry flush has an advantage.
We use a Trelino-like toilet. Composting is BS, btw, it's human waste. There's a reason farmers are not allowed to use human waste as a fertilizer whereas cow or even pig dung is ok.
As long as you manage to dry the 💩, it has next to no smell. What we use is a bag of sawdust that we keep next to the toilet (I'm also a woodworker :-p ). The waste bag is 'primed' with a 1/2" layer of sawdust and the 'flush' is to sprinkle a layer of sawdust on top of the 💩. And it even works if you're a bit unwell and have a less-than-optimal consistency - you just use a little more sawdust than normal. We can go for a long time w/o emptying the waste bucket, and I am willing to bet it's even less offensive than what you have to deal with as it feels more or less a bag of sawdust and not a very soft hot dog in a large plastic bag :-)) . No odor whatsoever regardless of the temps. A million times better than the cassette toilet we used to have. We do have the vent hooked up to the toilet with a computer fan that runs all the time (Trelino has the same system IIRC), but I am not even sure that is completely necessary.
We use composting plastic bags and as all we're tossing out is the bag, sawdust and poop, I don't think the environmental impact is even as large as with diapers.
The main reason we switched from the cassette toilet was because of the smell and overall gross-out factor when dealing with a full cassette. Never going back. I am seriously considering going this route on our boat too as I am not fond of dealing with the tank and even less fond of the stink in the head when conditions combine to make the system operate less than 100%. The work involved in removing the holding tank is the main thing that's held me back till now.
Sawdust has the disadvantage of being bulky -nothing beats peatmoss for use in a compost toilet but you have to purchase it
We have a Camco for our wet bath, but we need a second toilet because we have 4 little girls who always need to pee urgently. We're debating between a gamma lid bucket in a storage box and the Trelino
So now we need trelino vs. compost video
Trellino for #1, Laveo for #2 - what about one that combines the two?
Flush toilet. Period. That is the only answer. Otherwise just use a bucket and save your money.
How about a review of the Tiny John electric incinerating toilet. About 20 amps per use. Is that feasible in a van?
I like the trelino as a diverter toilet but not at $400! I have an analog five gallon bucket and a $10 camping toilet seat from walmart. I use bags, don't pee in it and cover #2 with a scoop of wood ash after each use. Odor is minimal and I change bags as needed. If there is odor it is a sign it needs emptying. lol It did not take long to get over any reservations about using it. Might not work as well for the females
Could you please do a review on incinerator toilets?
Here's a review on incinerator style: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Can you use the powder from the leveo in the tralino urine part to gel it and still empty it out?
if you want the square one it's cheaper to use a bucket with a toilet ring
exactly, it makes zero sense to buy that square one for upwards of $800 for a decent size when your idea is maybe $20 and is basically the same thing especially if one is going to change out the bag after each use.
I have a 2 head trawler, and can be out for some longer trips. Here's what we do. The master head, has a basic bucket system, and is for #1's only, figuring most of them happen at night. The forward "day head", we have a Laveo, and use that for our #2's, that way there is less bag use. During the day, we mostly just pee in a jug, and it just goes overboard (at sea).
Can you use a regular size (12 gallon) trash bag as a cheaper alternative ?
I'll be on a strict budget, and while I love the idea of the Laveo, the cartridges are just way way too expensive.
Pee in a container with a lid and dispose of responsibly.
Poo into a paper bag cut to funnel shape to fit the openig of the hasock toilet, line with pine pellets, use as needed, remove bag from toilet, twist top of paper bag, shake to fully coat faeces, drop into double bagged lining the hassok, dispose of responsibly.
So no smells from solids at all? Even the smell of litter? Does the lid really seal off odours, and what about hot days in the van (does it smell)? Look forward to your response.
I have an Ogo in my truck, but I’d like to hear your take on them.
Sorry. Not familiar with that toilet.
The Trelino comes in three sizes: small, medium and large. Which size Trelino are you demonstrating?
Have you tried the warppon tolit /?/
Leaving your van on a hot day the Trelino might surprise you when you open the door...
As long as you don't leave the waste bag in, or pee bucket that hasn't been emptied or at least closed, when you leave your van you shouldn't have any problem even in a hot climate.
We used a nature's head in our RV for 3 years then in our cabin for 6 years and it was fine as long as you take care of it. But I will say I much prefer the Trelino with the compostable bag over our nature's head.
Trevino also costs about 800.00 you didn't mention that.
I realize it was given as a gift maybe you didn't know that. I do like it much better .
Trevino 👍
Try natures head compost toilet.
We have a comparison video of Dry-flush vs. Nature's Head on the channel.
Very helpful thank you! Lets say(Trelino) you remove the top to remove the poop bag, will it splatter a bit of urine (from the front part if it is attached to below the valve of the urine container) or no?
No splatter. The urine bottle has a self-sealing baffle.
It seems to me the Trelino trumps all toilets. Its simplicity can not be improved. How do you improve a spoon?
Haha. Good point.
Is there any room in the Trelino to put a small container for something like sawdust or pine pellets? Sounds like the dry flush needs a separate pee container!
Yes. The Trevino space for a small container.
Great review Jeff, question for you. I’m using a cassette toilet now and have to remember to “burp” it when I travel to higher altitudes. What effect does altitude (>6000 ft) have on either system? I would imagine it would force some of the air (and smell) from the Trevino pee bottle back into the van??? How about the Laveo? Thank you!
I haven’t seen any issues with the Laveo. Haven’t had the Trelino at high altitude, so not sure about that one.
@@OurThrivingLife I’m really leaning towards the Laveo.
There's an optional silicone plug for the pee bottle. I don't plug it tightly (it's narrow/long, like a graduated stopper), so I don't imagine it would be a problem. Without the plug, the built in silicone gasket is very pliable and would breathe well enough with altitude.
Laveo dry flush is expensive to buy & use full time
Nice review. I do have a question. Why would a guy use one of these just to take a leak? That is what bushes are for.
Middle of the night, early morning.
Plus ya shouldn’t pee outside in public areas.
I have a Trelino. It works great for me but my wife uses toilet paper for #1 and that ends up in the bag. Haven’t tested on a longer trip yet.
Although I will say, it’s a huge improvement over my Tedford chemical toilet. That dam thing built up pressure on the road and when I went to flush the pressure released on me. Nasty
Sorry for the completely off topic question, but what are those work benches? They look like some sort of modular system that might take up less room than a normal bench. Thanks!
Here’s a link to the tables we use. They are great. Very sturdy, light, and fold up when you don’t need them. amzn.to/3vXF4CG
@@OurThrivingLife Thank you so much!
Trelino is called a separating toilet and there's now a lot in this category.
Have you ever used an incinerator toilet in a van build?
We have not. Incinerator toilets require a huge battery bank. Not really practical in a typical van build.
9:42 - Gotta love the Germans and their sense of humor. It is what it is.
The poop bag concept is a very simple and novel idea. I mean we do it for our dogs when we walk them, no different for us other than we don't have to scoop it up.
My only question is what are the tricks to adding a deodorizer in there. If say one has to really go, and you're still 75+ miles away from the nearest garbage can.
Good video... but I completely fail to see how these 2 are remotely similar. One is almost maintenance free and the other is completely full of maintenance. One requires a lot of manual handling, the other has again near next to zero.
I'd much rather see alternatives to the dry flush that is perhaps cheaper in price but with similar hasslefree maintenance.
Is there an approved place to "just throw it away" or in any public trash can for land fill.
In most jurisdictions you can throw it away just like a baby or adult diaper.
Nope can’t empty nothing can’t bring myself too beat is dry flush and now there’s a new dry flush one that’s cheaper that uses bags not cartridges I’m going that route. And a foot pump system for my sinks and my shower I need easy as I’m disabled.
What are your thoughts on Trevino vs Boxio?
I haven't used the Boxio, but it looks to be very similar in design to the Trelino...and also made in Germany. Also less expensive than Trelino. Looks like a good option.
I looked at both, and the large trelino has a much higher liquids capacity than the boxio. That was the determining factor for me.
Yikes! 5g bucket with cedar pellets is so much easier.
What about toilet paper used with #1? Into the poop bag compartment to wait for the next disposal? Or into a separate waste can?
I would put it in the poop bag compartment.
I use the poop bag compartment for tp, but I also toss paper trash and coffee grounds in there.
Get bed pan and some bags......
Holy OMG, Batman! Those are both just fancy versions of shitting in a bag in a 5-gallon bucket. And at prices that only someone who wants to status signal about their shits would want to buy them.
40 years ago, they used to make diaper disposal gizmos that worked exactly like that first monstrosity. But they never actually worked very well, so people just stopped buying them. Someone just repackaged that bad product and sold it to rich people who want to pretend that they are camping while also pretending that they are "vandwelling."
That second one is literally nothing more than a square version of a 5-gallon bucket with a bag in the back and a funnel going into a detergent jug in the front. FYI: shitting in a bag is NOT a composting toilet. It's shitting in a bag. But for almost $400.
I guess it's true what they say: A fool and their money are soon parted. And a status signaling fool, even sooner.
🤣
Not all us want to deal with human waste. So thankfully we can afford not to do so
Some of us don't want to deal with waste. And thankfully we can afford to do so
Word……. Geez, ever used a plastic grocery bags then into Mason jar until your next pit stop with garbage refuse.
Let’s not complicate things…….. W………..T………….(you know what). Who is paying to sh!t 😢
@@hmmm2564 Shitting in a bag in a $400 square bucket leaves you dealing with EXACTLY the came amount of human waste as shitting in a bag in a $5 5-gallon bucket.
You are just status signaling about your shits while pretending that you throwing away $395 means you don't have to deal with your shits.
If you are in any kind of vehicle, and not just always going to the bathroom at some business, or paying someone to empty your shit bags or black tank.... you WILL be dealing with human waste.
"And you just throw it away".
You just "dump it"?
I wonder where? Do someone else have to handle bags with your "nr 2"?
People throw away poop in the trash all the time with diapers, doggy doo, and litter boxes.
I'm 105 kg/230 lbs man. What's gonna happen when I sit on plastic Trelino? Am I gonna crack ti? Is it gonna brake?
The Trelino is rated at 330 lbs.
@@OurThrivingLifeThank you.
People are paying really serious money for pooping…. I pee in an old saucepan and poop in a carrier bag - one time use put it in the dog poo bin. And I’m an old lady… !😍 PS co-op carrier bags are best as they’re biodegradable.
So I think its simple, if you like carrying a lil bag around with Poo in it like some kind of a Borat sequel then the square one is fine however I do not cherish watching my wife carry around a bag of poo….
I like the Trelino but i cant find it in Australia
They are made in Germany. I believe shipping to Australia shouldn’t be a problem.

Thank you. 😊
I don't understand the dry flush toilets. Putting your business in a mylar bag and throwing it away seems crazy wasteful...decadent really. And all of those cartridges...where do you store them? I would put these toilets at the bottom of the list.
It's great for convenience but expensive and risky in case it stops working or breaks down. Trelino should be at the top works likes manual version of the dry flush.
If you're a truck driver stuck halted in a blizzard with 0 degree weather for 2 days, then you won't care how wasteful it is.
It seems like it would just make sense for a man to buy a portable urinal for around 10 bucks. Especially if you’re not doing bowel movements in the van.
The biodegradable bag for the Trelino is not preferred over a regular bag. Just sayin’.
The Trelino sure seems to be WAY over priced for a rather simple plastic contraption.
They’re all overpriced.
Mylar bags are not that bad.
They have mylar balloons mylar weather balloons, mylar emergency blankets, mylar potato chip bags.
Mylar is not a bad thing!
I would recommend that men just pee in a bottle. If you drink from a disposable bottle on a regular basis, just keep your empty bottle and fill it up with pee, then throw it out when it's full. Or even use a mens bedpan urinal.
Neither of these appear to be anywhere near as good as the Separett Tiny toilet
Got to be the most environmentally destructive way to make a toilet i would hat to be near a bin this has been in after a week
Interesting video.
That Dry Flush seems really wasteful and un-environmental, not to mention kind of creepy. And
you are dependent on those cartridges. Depending on public restrooms is not a good strategy.
I really do not like that.
The Trelino I have seen in other videos and seems more sensible and environmental.
I have seen other one that incinerate which is interesting.
This stuff is an environmental disaster.
What's wry on the bags just killed the sale for me .
If we don't take care of this right after died we be burried in other people toilet if we use toilet the day we die the that bad. Incinerator toilet is better
