I being fixing bikes for over 30 years, and I still finding my self hypnotized by this videos.
Very kind thank you!🧡
Keep it up! I’ve been a mechanic for 7 years and I learn every time I watch your videos
Awesome! Thanks for watching Jesper🧡⚙️
Greetings from the Pacific Northwest. I've been watching Bikespeeds for awhile now and have learned so much...and then this Giant Defy rebuild came along. For me it was special because I have this exact model so now I know every part of my bike and how each part interfaces with all the others. Thank you for all the teaching you do and also for your son who does a wonderful job in the video production. You two are a good team. Wish you were around the corner instead of thousands of miles away! Best wishes.
Thanks Frank! Glad you’re enjoying the videos and could take something from them🧡⚙️
Never seen a free hub dismantled and re-greased before. Thanks, I learned a lot.
Thanks for watching!🧡⚙️
it's funny how Giant cheaped out on the crankset for this ultegra bike actually avoided the shimano recall on those glued on ultegra cranksets.
Love the content guys, as a mechanic sitting at home with a broken leg, this is the meditation that I need))) One thing that struck out is the rear derailleur coming out of the ultrasonic cleaner, I would definitely take it apart re-grease the cage pivot and the clutch, seen to many around that corroded from the inside and seized..
To see a Master at work doing such quality service makes my day. Also, lovely bike that.
Thanks Naga makes our day to receive comments like that🧡⚙️
Nice change of pace from the more 'careworn' bikes you've shown of late. I think you see the lesser defects more prominently when it's a user serviced bike. That hub service was very interesting too. Well beyond most of us, I imagine....
As much as we’re a bike shop and we’d love everyone to bring their bikes to us we can’t blame people for doing their own mechanics lol. However we do believe even home mechanics can benefit just as much as everyone else from a once over every now and then just for a different set of eyes on the bike🧡
Even the subtle details can make all the difference on the next ride. “We treat all bikes the same.” Great attitude! This shows you see that all bikes deserve to be at their best, no matter the rider. Thanks guys!
Just the smallest visual changes in the before/after images but as you said its the subtle differences. The owner will be so happy with how it rides now 👍
Tremendous service. Really good to see that hub service 😎 not that I would ever try it myself 😅 Also nice to see for once that the tyre labels were centered on the valve 😉
Haha yes it saved us a job there lol⚙️
Thanks guys, this will really help me service my TCR.
Good luck!🧡⚙️
Great to see more or a standard service and why its needed. The before and after aren't completely different this time around but you showed why this was clearly still needed. Good job! See you next week!
We try to get as much variety as we can on camera and these jobs are just as transforming as our full on restorations sometimes, see you next week!🧡⚙️
Another cracking job. I love watching your vlogs for the attention to detail. Can learn so much from them.
Thanks Alan! 🧡⚙️
Beautiful work to make this Giant reborn!
Many more miles now🧡🍻
loved this video, i just finished my first year of bike mechanics course and it's nice to see the quality of your work. happy subscriber !
Enjoy all your work!🧡
Thanks for another great jog 👍
Wonderful freehub rebuild 🤩... and if you consider copper anti-seizing compound as a grease, then it's actually five different ones you used! Cheers and thanks for making these great inspiring videos.
Thanks Carlos, we love a good bit of greasing here lol🧡⚙️
Beautiful bike, and always learn by following your videos, thanks
That’s great to hear, thanks!🧡⚙️
Great video, keep'em coming and I'll keep watching.
Good agreement🤝🧡
Great stuff guys!
Thanks again!🧡⚙️
Thanks for video!
Thanks for watching!🧡
Nice work😊👍🏻👍🏻
Brilliant video - getting addicted to your channel and really appreciate all of the expertise you're sharing. Thank you and keep it up!
Thanks Andy! Glad you enjoy the channel thanks for watching 🧡⚙️
Always impressed by your knowledge of the mechanics of an unending variety of bicycles. Will there ever be an episode in which you're simply stumped by the bike's parts? As a Giant Defy owner myself, enjoyed this episode more than usual!
Haha maybe, we’ve had a few real stressful jobs but always managed them. Enjoy your defy!🧡⚙️
Thank you!!!
We thank you! Thanks for watching🧡⚙️
Nice bike running even better now.
Agreed!🧡⚙️
Such a masterpiece
Thanks Christopher! Too kind!🧡⚙️
Awesome Job 👍love your work 👍you do a fantastic job and such attention to detail well done I love your videos 👍👍
Thanks Addie we appreciate your support🧡⚙️
I have a Giant Contend SL1 2021 which I bought in June this year on discount. I wanted to know more about the PR2 wheel and how the freehub is secured. This video showed everything I needed to know. The original wheel had lots of issues, including rim cracking at the spoke holes, a couple of broken spokes, cracking noise from the freehub and the hub tension bolts either undoing or play. My bike shop said they would start a warranty claim and at the same time, gave me another PR2 wheel that was new and unused, save some scratches from factory. That wheel is a 2022 wheel. I also have spare new PR2 wheels from someone who preferred their own wheels. Again these are 2022 wheels. The difference is 2021 had silver spoke nipples, while the 2022 wheels are black. Strangely I had a similar issue with my Giant Fastroad SL3 rear wheel had the same rim cracking last year. Again resolved under warranty and no problems with the replacement wheel. Unlucky or bad quality control during 2021 build year. I am 13 stones and both bikes are large fit.
Giant D-fuse seat post clamp can have issues without gripper paste.
I love your videos, and they are very informative.
That’s a great bike! Enjoy it and glad you can enjoy our videos🧡
Great video. Very helpful
Thanks!🧡
another great vid
Thanks as always! 🧡⚙️
Thank you for the clips and the Chanel.
I’m amazed by your passion and meticulous attention to details.
What a treat to watch and learn from you.
IMHO nothing tops a good bike spa like yours like a new bar tape.
I haven’t seen you replace tapes. Why?
We do replace tape across the videos, it really just depends on wether the customer has or hasn’t asked for it. On most of our larger re-cabling jobs new tape is often required but if not it’s simply up to the customer. Thanks for all the support Adam🧡⚙️
Not sure about that but isn’t there grease inside the clutch mechanism? Aren’t you afraid of washing that out in the ultrasonic cleaner @Bikespeeds? Love your vids!
Thank you for bringing up the importance of replacing the cable housing, little breaks in the rubber leads to rust and poor performance, replacing them can be the difference between an enjoyable ride and sitting on the couch because it’s not enjoyable. Hopefully repeating your message of proper maintenance will keep people off the couch and on their bikes.
Another great video. I too have a Defy which developed the same cracked outer. I wonder if Giant had a quality issue with cable outers!
Hard to be sure from the video, but it looks like brake housing on that derailleur cable, coil wire not parallel. Could happen in a service, but with two more in the comments here it seems like the factory must have been doing it for some bizarre reason?!
What grease do you use on the derailleur springs as well as pivot points? Great work as usual, looking forward to the next one👌🏾
Love the content and i'm subscribed since quite some time. I'm a home-mechanic and i took quite a few tips from your channel about servicing my bike here at home.
Once piece of equipment i'd like your recommendation on is a ultra-sonic cleaner + the degreaser you use for it. Is there anything you can recommend or have some links? I can then try to find the parts here in Germany. In relation to this: how are you actually treating Di2 parts? Are you just washing them on the surface with a brush and never put them in the sonic bath?
Best of luck to you!
We can’t recommend anything in Germany as we don’t have the experience but I’m sure there will be good models over there. We’re very cautious not to dunk di2 also. Thanks for the support 🧡
👍
My Defy is only 6 months old and I have the same issue with the rear outer derailleur housing. The gap between where the cable comes out of the frame and the RD looks too short, how do I fix this and prevent it splitting in the future?
It would be great if you'd like the lubricants you use and where. What grit of sandpaper do you use on the brake rotors, too? And the tork settings you use on the tork wrench, too.
Hi Ted. We tend not to make how to videos. A lot of our customers enjoy the videos just to see what work we get up too and aren’t interested in doing it themselves. However for the mechanics that watch like you we will be listing our lubricants and such on an online store that will be completed a few months from now. Stay tuned till then and thanks for watching🧡
Hi. Can you please tell me what tool you used to dismantle the freehub, once the sealed bearing is out.
given the labour to service the rear hub, the owner should just get a cheap disc wheel like r470 ( can be found for cheap as its comes stock on many specialized which are sold for about $100-150
Good morning. Great video. Quick question, what is the grit of Emery Cloth you use on the brake rotors. Cheers from Ottawa Canada.
Really awesome video. Done some maintenance on my rear PR-2 wheel. But, question, what kind of tool do you use to remove the freehub? There is a lot of dirt at mine and I do not have the tool yet and cannot find it on the internet. Do you have the name? Thanks!
Thanks for this video. May I ask what tool did you use to remove the hub body ? 4:28
Really enjoyed that one! I'm curious about the freehub overhaul - when I first wore one out I was told it wasn't designed to be serviced, just replaced. I now know how to service them myself, but I'm wondering why you do them when so many bike shops would see it as a waste of time? Thanks as always!
because too many bike mechanics are lazy, unqualified and want to make a quick buck.
I've been a mechanic for just 3 years but I can service an old school freewheel. they have something like 40+ balls in them. And I love doing it, because it makes people happy.
Cant speak on the other bike shops but we just have a service over replacement philosophy here. It’s always cheaper than replacing parts⚙️
It's one of the things I really like about you!
Is it ok to put clutch derailleurs into the ultrasonic? Any issues with the clutch feeling loose afterwards??
Can you make separate video talking about the application of greases? So much type of it as I've seen from your video. Thanks!
We did, it is a little outdated now compared to our current videos but it’s there if you need it🧡⚙️
@@Bikespeeds found it, thanks!
Do you check the steerer tube on those big services on carbon bikes? Afaik this is the most common point of failure on carbon frames and one of the worst crashes to be had as well.
(I check the steerer tube on my full carbon forks once per year and I've found a damaged one once on a friends bike, which has instantly been swapped out by the manufacturer without any discussion whatsoever)
Two quick things, the rear derailleur cable housing was a tad too long. That’s part of the reason why it was damaged. Second, per Shimano specs, the rear derailleur housing should have a shiny metal full thickness cable ferrule on the end going into the derailleur adjuster. The housing provided with a new derailleur itself is actually unique, and Shimano prefers you only shorten it from the end not using the metal ferrule.
Thanks for a great video. I'm planning same thing for my Defy that needs to be sent off for a carbon frame repair. Can you recommend the solution you use in your Ultrasonic cleaner? Im looking to buy one based upon your video but not sure what to use within it. Many thanks.
We do not have a preference, the one we’re currently testing we’re not the biggest fan of🧡
Can I ask what cable (brands) you use for the gears and brakes?
When you replace the bearings (in wheels, headsets, etc), how do you know how many balls to put in and what size do you use and where do you buy them from? Thanks, I'm learning a fair amount from these videos
We match exactly what comes out 🧡
What is the measurement of the crank bearing on the Giant Defy. I need to exchange but not the size. Would it be bb30 30x42x7? Thank you
Hi Lee. Big fan and aspiring bike mechanic here from Manila. I want to ask, what do you call the nylon brush you're using after the ultrasonic cleaner? Thank you in advance and more power to the channel.
Hi! Thanks for the support🧡 it is simply a nylon detailing brush⚙️
How do you reuse the microfibre towels?
Do you wash them or do you buy New ones?
Hi. Do you have a link to the freehub lockring removal tool please.
Look forward to your vids fella. I've got a 6l ultrasonic cleaner and have been hesitant to chuck the rear mech in due to it having a clutch (xtm8100). How often would you suggest using the Ultrasonic before having to take the clutch apart and regrease etc
Too much effort to risk it. I'd just not maintain it untill something is not working.
@@ItsMorbinTime03 Only takes a few minutes. I enjoy maintaining my bikes hence getting the ultrasonic cleaner.. This chap knows way more then me about the specific grease inside etc so it's a genuine question👌
No need to over do it but it’ll definitely be fine to put in there⚙️
@@Bikespeeds Cheers for replying pal 👍
Thanks for watching 🧡
Good afternoon! Which puller do you use?
I’ve been curious on how you guys always have a full injection of different kinds of grease, How do y’all prep your applicators? Do you use it like a normal injection needle where you suck the materials or you take out the plunger then jam everything, Would it be possible to do a video of what happens behind the scenes, Like prep work, how y’all talk to customers, how the conversation goes before you feature the bikes, Maybe a Christmas special? Thank You. 😁
We’re trying to grow the channel as quickly as we can which means videos like that we don’t have the luxury of making right now. We’re just trying to appeal to as many people as possible each week with our servicing. So definitely in future we may do some content like that, but to answer your question we jam it in lol⚙️
@@Bikespeeds That is understandable, Plus the rep you guys built, Showing the world how you do your service, It would definitely attract some foot traffic to your shop. Keep up the good work, Glad I could give some idea for future vids. And You guys are doing great 😍 Keep it up.
I use general purpose grease for pretty much everything, does using specific grease make a big difference?
Massively! It’s all about the different consistency’s of thin and thick for different applications⚙️
@@Bikespeeds Interesting, would be nice if you did some insights videos about this kind of stuff :)
Don't you regrease the rear deraillieur cage spring ?
Perfect video to watch before bedtime cheers gents! Keep up the good work
Enjoy!🧡⚙️
Please can you tell me what size bearing are those ?
Добрый день! Какой съемник используйте?
Couple of things I disagree with here, would like to hear your input.
why would you use standard shift outer for the rear mech outer casing, why not use OT-RS900? As soon as the customer pulls that rear mech back to remove the wheel, they'll kink the outer.
Secondly, using copper paste is only going to damage the piston seals and cause them to seize/leak, the copper paste will have already migrated onto the pistons.
Copper grease is put on the back of millions of motorbike / car / van / truck brake pads without destroying piston seals, why should it be suddenly a problem for bikes ?
@@johnmoruzzi7236 Well, most pad manufacturers for motorbikes do not recommend copper grease. There are two reasons for this, firstly the rubber seal will perish due to that copper paste, secondly it can contaminate the pads.
Now, in the case of a shimano caliper, there are some significant differences, firstly the seals cannot be replaced, so when the seals do expand, you need to buy a new caliper. The copper paste can also migrate to the pad compound. I could write about this indefinitely so I'll leave it there. But in summary, very bad idea for a non-serviceable item.
Yes Great video and very interesting But! will clients pay for that high value service. I had a phone call from just a few days ago, asking for cost of a basic service i quoted £30 he said i am not booking an appointment i am just phoning round at the moment.
yeah
