    While I was a mechanic in the U.S. Army the sergeants always carried on about doing PMCS, Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services, it always seemed like a drag because it always felt like the vehicles never needed them. Thinking back, the reason why a PMCS was so important was that we wouldn’t have to do costly repairs later. This video is perfect proof of how doing your PMCS can save your life… well at least your bike.

    Top work again. Really enjoyed this piece. Servicing bikes is what you do really well but aren’t you ever amazed or surprised at what people put up with with regard to their bikes? As a mode of transport, bikes are cheap and portable. As a cyclist I find cycle journeys/ rides very satisfying when the brakes and gears are faultless. Not having a bike in decent condition must surely be frustrating. Of course this is my own perspective . You’re doing a great job boys. Always good to see conscientious work ethic.

    • @oftankoftan
      @oftankoftan Před rokem +3

      My life before being a mechanic had a different view of my bike. I didn't think about it until I sat on it. And it was just to get from A to B.
      Most people don't think about their bikes until something's not working.
      It's funny because I've seen people not noticing a broken spoke or a rusty chain, being super critical once they get their bike back.
      Had one customer complain about creaking. Turns out it was a lose bolt in the adjustable stem. I never even touched that bolt, lol.

    • @Bikespeeds
      @Bikespeeds  Před rokem +4

      We can understand that keeping on top of a bike when you don’t do the work yourself can be challenging. You’ll be without it for a short while and if you take your training seriously that’s a big no no. Often our best local riders run their bikes till they absolutely need it serviced. There’s the cost involved also, that plays a factor for some people. So whilst we do agree bikes should be serviced more regularly than most people chose but we understand how the bikes end up the way they do. Thanks very much for watching 🧡

    • @petesmitt
      @petesmitt Před rokem +2

    I've got a 2020 Allez (same frame different paintwork). Had it for about 18 months before i stripped off the Claris for full 105 but the BB was bone dry when I removed it. Probably helps that i never want to go out in the rain either! That said it's a silly design choice not putting gaskets on there the derailleur cables enter the downtube. I assume that water has got in there and gone down and not exited where the cables come out of the frame under the BB.

    As always a pleasure to watch the heart you put into the service. The water around the bottom bracket might come from the top of the seatpost. Seat is a bit uncomfortable but that's pretty much the same situation with most bikes.3. Seat post is a bit long/high for a smaller size 48 bike - had to saw 2 inch off to fit properly. The lowest setting is too high. The post locking system does not seem to hold well (perhaps because I saw 2 inch off).4. wheels are not tubeless compatible (from what I can tell)

    Just a quick question. What do you do with the used micro fibre towels? Do you chuck them or clean them somehow? I guess you buy them in bulk?

    • @Bikespeeds
      @Bikespeeds  Před rokem +2

      They inevitably all end up going thrown out because you simply can’t wash the grease out of them but we’ll try to go from a clean towel on the frame to using that for drying parts, then maybe washing parts, then wiping really greasy parts etc and getting our uses out of them depending on their current stage of “greasy”🧡

    Winter and rainy weather are not very bike friendly! A simple bike like a singlespeed ha less parts to fail. A BB can be prevented from rusting by drilling a drain hole in the BB shell.

    Hello Bikespeeds!
    On one of your videos you said when getting a new wheelset, its important to focus on getting good quality hubs.
    How do I know which hubs are of good quality? Can you give recommendations? I am looking for high quality aluminium rims for road (rim brake), 700€ max.
    Thank you for your awesome content my friend!

      We only know the English market so we can’t recommend anything really internationally. The main thing to look for is good bearings. Sometimes it’s even worth just upgrading your own over buying new wheels 🧡⚙️

    That poor bike was in horrid condition; looks like it went swimming in a mud puddle. I doubt if this bike got so corroded from being ridden; I don't like saying it, but it seems to me it's been neglected. This bike is a great example of why bikes should not be stored outside. Good thing it found its way to bikespeeds.

    • @Bikespeeds

      This bike was actually well ridden, with our seaside air it had just corroded over many miles. This customer cares quite well for their bikes which is why you can see it’s almost spotless! Thanks very much for watching as always🧡⚙️

      @rangersmith4652 Před rokem

      @@Bikespeeds In my experience, components don't bind up from being ridden, but from sitting outside in the weather. The only spotless part of the bike is the paint on the alloy frame, the part least affected by weathering. It's possible that road grit can get into components and lock them up, but a bike can be cleaned after a ride, can it not?
