Orlando Figes is a prominent British historian and writer best known for his works on Russian history. He is Professor of History at Birkbeck College, University of London.

The issue with his take, is that it’s against his own work, his own Book on the history of Russia, the system of Patrimony and Autocracy that he himself points out in a People’s Tragedy, it’s all there. It often strange how optimist, no mattered how well researched they are, cannot draw conclusions from their own works that differ from their perspective.

I do respect Mr. Figes, though the question at 5:00 absolutely pinned him. Russia, through violence, annexed territory of another sovereign state. Mr. Figes struggled to defend his claim that Russia is not expansionist, fumbling about how he condemned Russia's aggression

Mr. Figes is a clever man. He understands the reality of the situation, sees it for what it really is. However, he knows better than to call out the emperor for wearing no clothes.

@ 3:00 minutes Mr. (excited) Figes says as per Putin and Russia, and with emphasis, "...there is not a clear ideology (!)" Earlier he states that Putin is a 'threat' (I think) to "Western values.". It would be interesting to hear Mr. Figes expound a bit on what his idea of "Western Values" and if it includes promoting trans-gender-ism.

The Russia of today has neither the ability or the ambition to establish empires; you can't really do that sort of thing if your economy is still largely dependent on selling natural resources like oil.
