Peter Hitchens is a British journalist, author, and broadcaster. He currently writes for the Mail on Sunday, where he is a columnist and occasional foreign correspondent. He regularly engages with a great many topics in public debate on major television & radio networks and at universities around the world.
Peter has just completed his tenth book, a critique of the modern British education system. His past works include The Abolition of Britain and The Rage Against God.
A former Trotskyist, he partly attributes his return to Christian faith to his experience of socialism in practice, which he witnessed during his years reporting in Eastern Europe and later from Moscow during the collapse of the Soviet Union.

What about the Minsk 2 agreement which was supposed to give a degree of autonomy to the ethnically Russian part of Ukraine? Why was it never implemented? PH was discussing this on GB News yesterday.

Especially when you look at it as a percentage of GDP. Western military complex doesn't make it's citizens live in poverty. Russian does. Of course, if I spoke with someone with half a brain that would be it. But You're gonna claim that there's poverty in the USA.
Bo it isn't, were talking absolute poverty, Russia is the most unequal country in the world, most if the citizens are very poor. And instead of solving this issue Russian are spending resources on their imperialistic wet dream.

I've changed my views over recent years and now find it extremely difficult to view the west as "the good guys"
Not saying I think Russia is engaged in a righteous endeavor or anything, I'm just extremely sceptical of what we are told, especially regarding war.
I find myself increasingly questioning the prevailing narratives of numerous subjects and events past and present.

No western country is engaged in anything righteous either. This is just realpolitik. What frustrates me is the cloak of moral righteousness. Let’s call it what it is and then debate the pros and cons. The debate is sadly non existent, which is a great loss!

Presumably 50 years ago a man like Hitchens would have said this is not 'David versus Goliath' or some other such Biblical reference. But now he has adapted to the modern religions and called it 'Gandalf versus the Orcs'.
Possibly yes, but David and Goliath would not work, as Hitchens reference was to a good vs evil scenario, rather than a big vs small one.
I think it's more because those are the references apparently being used by troops on the ground... With Ukrainians referring to Russian troops as Orcs.
Well as Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic who drew on our ancient history and legends

However I believe that Tolkien saw the Orcs as twisted creatures made from good beings
It’s my belief that Tolkien saw how someone good could be twisted to do evil while loathing themselves for doing it while serving at the front during the Somme.

Peter Hitchens, is in my book at least,a very rare beast,a journalist I respect.He is the ONLY person I have read that has a genuine appreciation of why the British Police Service has declined so much in the past 40 or so years.A decline precipitated and engineered by our useless and arrogant politicians who have,once the stupidity of their meddling has become apparent, then blamed the very people they charged with implimenting their so-called reforms.As a person who was in the service from 1965-2001 I had to standby as government after government slowly deconstructed what was one of this nations greatest assests.Mr Hitchens also watched as this tragedy unfolded, I suspect rather like the early 30s.

Coverage of the war is one sided and they make it sound like it's Gandolf vs the Orcs .

Why ever not? He likes reading I general both fiction and non fiction, and enjoys the LoTR books, and has seen at least The Fellowship of the Ring at the cinema.
Careful! Freedom of speech exists only on paper. It would be a shame to lose your channel. In "the west" you are told that it is your right to say whatever you want, but when you do, you get punished. At least in Russia, you know from the start what you can and cannot say.

No, freedom of speech is a real thing in the West, in Russia, not so much. I once made some comments on a politically sensitive matter here in the US and was investigated for my trouble. I didn't break any laws and made sure what I told them was true, eventually, the whole thing went away. Does the man from Uncle monitor my comments and communications? I'm sure he does, but a lot of other parties do as well. The man from Uncle didn't tell me to shut up though.

I used to work for SBS radio in Melbourne and could see very unprofessional approach to work not only by the employees broadcasting in different languages but also by the management.
It is strange that in twenty years since than the attitude towards journalism and the task to inform people (migrants) has not changed at all even has worsened. Maybe is time ABS as a sister of SBC takes serious steps to stop that kind of copy and paste attitude practiced by the “journalists” at SBS...
The ABC regularly posts blatant Ukrainian propaganda on Facebook. Also, for example, the ABC is never allowed to criticize Israel and it still tells listeners that Syria used 'chemical weapons against its own people'.
On 20 February Hitchens opinion was that there was no way Russia would invade Ukraine now he says it was wholly forseeable. Sums up this man full of BS.
