Bottom line , Russia has always been plagued with access to warm water ports for it naval fleet and commerce. Ever since Egypt kicked them out of Alexander , Russia has been trying to regain a foothold. That's why Putin aided Assad , so they can have naval base on the Mediterranean again.
Going through the Bosphorus is a strategic chokepoint. Having control in Crimea and Syria located on both ends of the chokepoint gives them HUGE leverage. Rest of this talk about prestige is mumbo jumbo.

The Ukrainian state of Crimea was a warm water port for the Russians and they have always desired it. The Crimean War of 1859 was a result of it and it was the result of Russian aggression and the Franco-British policy of defending and denying them the land which they won, it was also the first also media war with photography and news media.

Russia built the Sevastopol port in 1772. They want it back, many ethnic Russians inside Ukraine want irrdenist reunion with Russia. I argue Novorossiya population pre Yanukovych removal should have been given the democratic self determination United Nations right to have a legal credible referendum between maintaining the union with Ukraine or independence. Looking at western pew research polling 2014. Crimea would most likely choose independence, the other Oblasts would choose union with Ukraine. That option of a credible referendum went out the door when Yanukovych was removed and Putin took the opportunity to annex Crimea to protect Sevastopol Naval base. Yulia Tymoshenko made prior comments that Ukrainian constitution forbids leasing Sevastopol to Russia. She was released from prison upon the removal of Yanukovych as head of state.

The first impartial and historically accurate summary of the region that I’ve heard in the year of the conflict, so refreshing to be trusted to hear some truth as opposed to the constant false histories and blatant propaganda. Thank you.

The question is WHEN did became Crimea Ukrainian or Russian! Ukrainians had always ties to Crimea, where Russia wanted Crimea for its new build empire and expansion efforts under Katharina the Great (building a fleet and so on). Russia also build towns and "conquered" Donbas for resources massively by bringing in thousands of Russians. Because Ukraine didn't really exist prior to these days it's difficult to say who "owns" what. But we also can say that Russia wouldn't exist without the "Northman" who set up trading places and towns (Novgorod, Kasan f.e.) and that "The Russians" were a little tribe not really worth mentioning when setting up the Kiiv Rus. Language, Ukrainian, isn't really a point of discussion if we want to say "That's the Ukrainian Nation", because it was build on relationships within tribes which lived there. The Russian language evolved and expanded due to efforts made by the Zar Ivan and became dominant, whereby "Ukrainian" evolved due to many influences like Polish and so on. It's very difficult to say when the Ukrainian nation formed out, it's done over a long period of time actually. Neither Donbas or Crimea was/is Russian. Crimea shouldn't be part of both countries but given to the natives, the Crimean Tartar and Donbas should be part of Ukraine as "native" territory. We can't judge who's owning what because of "conquering and developing" prior 1991. It would be squaring the circle and international law as we know it would be obsolete!

@@teardrop-in-a-fishbowl You don't know what you're talking about.
The Russians were part of the Rus, they weren't "some tribe" while the Rus were building Novgorod etc. Novgorod is Russia's heritage. Russia wanted Crimea because it was a gigantic slave port that was being used as a launching pad to invade Russia, and they wanted to put an end to it.

Pretty inane stuff. The interviewer asking if Crimea is Ukrainian? The interviewee acting like Ukrainian loss of Crimea and Donbas is a given. Horrible stuff.
