Sure, they lived healthy before and after the events, but the fact they survived at all is indeed a miracle and if you say otherwise you're a very negative person (which seems indicative already based on your negative attitude).
Ask Nando is he thinks it was a miracle. The crash alone could've caused hemorrhaging, internal bleeding, etc. The negative conditions after, as well as journey, could've easily caused long lasting damage to their bodies (inside and out, mental and physical). Just living with the fact that they had to butcher and eat their deceased friends would be enough to make lesser folk want to kill themselves.
Keep discounting it so you can feel like edge lord of the day on the internet though, because I'm sure you never struggled much, if any.
One more amazing part of this story is how Nando actually boarded the helicopter so that the pilots could actually find the survivors. He flew over the Andes voluntarily AGAIN, in a helicopter no less! He talks about how the wind would push the helicopter around. This man is the epitome of bravery!!
He's still alive today!!! The guy is an absolute legend of the human spirit and selflessness and the will to survive.

Nando didn't fly voluntarily, he didn't want to, but was pulled into the helicopter by the rescue team. He tells it in numerous interviews and his book.

That movie was a poor version of what happened. The History Channel documentary from 2009 and the book Alive by Piers Paul Read are the gold standard.

The survivors and the families of the deceased say 'Society of the Snow' is so realistic that everytime they watch it they feel they're living the experience and seeing their lost friends/loved ones again. For the victims' families, this film's helped ease the sorrow they'd felt for 51 years by showing how important their siblings, parents and child (Coco Nicolich's mother's still alive) were for the group.
The survivors's stated the book 'Alive' is a quite accurate but very cold account of facts, with some fiction in it, which couldn't capture the essence of what they went through, the human side of the story. This is why they asked their lifelong friend Pablo Vierci to write a book the way they woud've liked 'Alive' to be written. Vierci wrote 'Society of the Snow' by using the interviews made for the documentary 'Stranded' as source material.
They don't like the film 'Alive' because it's a superficial, unrealistic depiction that fails to convey the feelings and values they experienced in the Andes. They've never felt reflected in those stereotyped characters.

I just looked on google earth at the Andes mountain range, omg, they walked all that way, starving, injured, freezing, absolutely remarkable. This must be THE most amazing rescue story I’ve EVER SEEN

I would have respected them more if they didn't eat those people and starved to death. In Africa, Middle East (mostly Muslim countries) when people starve they NEVER eat anther human - they die of hunger. If it was the west or China/Japan etc, you would have an outbreak of cannibalism (people killing each other for their flesh). It clearly shows who have the correct religion and who dont.

This HERO, who with Roberto, walked for miles over the sometimes vertical Andes mountains, wearing rugby boots and summer clothes, with no equipment apart from poles and crude sunglasses salvaged from the plane crash. He walked, having survived a plane crash, head injury, three day coma, starvation, dehydration, injury, emotional loss of his mother, sister and friends....having to make the unthinkable choice to use the only protein on the mountain....those same friends....He walks, then voluntarily steps back on a helicopter to go back and rescue the other survivors, on an aircraft that was buffeted so much by the wind the pilots were crying and shouting the rosary. Nando Parrado. Hero.

Yes, but they were prepared by the rest of the survivors. A lot of previous expeditions were made to know the conditions they'd have to deal with. One of the expeditionaries, Numa Turcatti, was never able to fully recover physically and mentally from the first long expedition (on day 11), which ultimately led to his death on day 61.
Unlike their friends, Canessa and Parrado were allowed to eat all the 'food' they wanted, wear all the clothes they chose (they could ask another person to take off the piece of clothes this person was wearing), choose the most comfortable and warmest places to sleep, etc.
If you knew the whole story, you'd understand that they are all heroes, the ones who survived and those who couldn't make it. It was teamwork and a chain of heroic actions what took them out of the mountains.

The more I watched the video, the more he stood out as someone with good character that usually just happens to expose those with poor character........and thinking. As his need and drive to pursue his hearts desire/what ***********his spirit drove him to do, some how turned into a mockery for those that are usually clueless and can usually find foley via mockery in the most serious of things.

As they're usually grounded in so many other ways that allow them to be so hands on and privy to all that's really going on. I'm actually amazed that there were folk making a mockery of his concern and initiative. You gotta wonder about folk at times.
Day 5 cannibalism??? The most of people can leave and function well without any food for 30-40 days.
Someone else said it perfectly: this is the pushing the boundaries of what humans can do by a hundred-fold. It's truly miraculous how incredible these men are. And frankly, if I died in the crash, I would have hoped they'd use my body. I'd be sad if they didn't! One of the most incredible stories of the century no doubt.

I absolutely agree. As a registered organ donor, I hope that when my time comes at least some of my bits and pieces will help someone else to live. I see no difference between being an organ donor and being a "meat" donor and I sincerely hope that if this should happen to me, survivors would make use of whatever bits of me they can in order to live.

Those 2 19 year olds making that insane trek in -30 degree weather, iver 100 miles, up and down mountainous terrain, with makeshift winter clothes, makeshift sunglasses, makeshift snow shoes, nothing to eat but a small bag of their friends flesh/organs, nothing to drink but snow, after being injured (one who lost his mother and sister had a fractured skull and didnt wake up for 3 days), starved, dehydrated, defeated, the emotional toll of losing family and friends right in front of you, then having no other choice but to *EAT* them, and the added lost feeling of not actually knowing where you're going...im sure our early ancestors did things similar to this, the nomads. *BUT* , this is hands down one of the single most impressive feats in not only survuval, but mountaineering, in recorded human history.

huge respects for the father who never gave up. this episode really showed and taught me really important things and to be grateful for what you have and also the smallest things you get.
He wasn't the only parent who never gave up. There were other fathers and especially mothers (and girlfriends too) who felt their children were alive, and did everything to find them, including consulting a psychic. In fact, some of them were in Chile looking for their sons when they learnt that Canessa and Parrado had appeared saying that they'd left other 14 survivors back in the mountains.
Nando Parrado's book is one of the most powerful things I've ever read. I think what makes it particularly special is that he wrote it quite a few years after the accident and was able to express the effect the accident had on his life.
Yes, one of the best books I’ve ever read. Started reading it and had to force myself to put it down halfway through. As good as it was, the real standout to me was the epilogue. I thought that part alone was worth the price of the book.
Nando is alive and well today. He is in his 70s.

Knowing this story very well (I'm Uruguayan), credit must also go to the mother. She really pushed the father and was the one who believed her son was alive and would not be convinced of anything else.
“Today is the most important day of my life” heavy words of a man that’s been through something.
almost 50 years ago, as a small child in Uruguay, I followed this story from beginning to end. I have flashbacks to the bits of news that radio and TV relayed to us. Until one December morning, on a beautiful summer day, we heard they had rescued themselves. Some images still haunt me, like somebody's mother counting with her hands as each one of the survivor's name was read out, shaking her head and doubting whether her son was among the living. Honestly I can't recall how that part ended. Among survival stories this has to be THE one that involves the ultimate sacrifice, the one love wins over everything else. The love of the dead's families, the love of God, the love of each other and the love of life.
I've never understood how upset people got with these guys for choosing to survive. I think they're brave, and did not let their friends die in vain. I've never understood the anger - if they had a fridge full of filet mignon and ate their friends instead, I'd understand it.

yeah they did what what they had to do to survive but some people was just mad because of the moral standpoint it’s not like they was going to be able to bring the bodies back anyway not in that type of terrain.
The catholic church was against them at first and people just went along with the church. So they're initially revolted at the thought of it, and that feeling is nurtured by religious leaders.
I was 20 in 1972 when this plane crash happened and the thought of these guys who were around my age all dying in the mountains was just shocking. No one could believe it when the story was on the T.V news and in the papers that they had been found after all that time right before Christmas- it was fantastic, best Christmas present ever. True courage, resourcefulness and the will to live was inspirational, especially that climb across the mountains, unbelievable.
The love that father had for his son was wonderful and he never gave up hope. R.I.P. those who sadly didn't survive.
I was 10, and I remember the story as if I was today, because I am originally from Uruguay so we all lived the Odyssey with them.

They weren't found, help didn't find them,they found help
The weather actually helped them a lot. The snow was melted for water and it prevented the “food” from going bad.
Along with that is the fact Nando would have died if it wasn’t for the cold. He was in a coma after the crash left his skull fractured in 3 places. The survivors thought it unlikely he would survive and he was placed in the fuselage that offered little protection from the cold. Normally his brain would have swelled from the trauma but the cold kept that from happening and he eventually recovered becoming the main reason that he and Roberto walked out of there.

They also used each other's body heat to keep warm in the fuselage. There were like 25 people sleeping in a 10 ft by 8 foot little shed (fuselage).

I thought I was familiar with the major survival stories but somehow never heard much about this one. WOW. I am amazed and really inspired by the determination of the survivors (and the father who kept looking)! Just astounding. I hope they never felt guilty about what they were REQUIRED to do to survive. One's soul is gone once they die...no one would have survived if they hadn't eaten. But to trek into unknown mountains of that caliber and elevation without real gear...I can't get over how amazing this survival story is.
I suggest you get a copy Alive! The movie made about this specifically the 30 year anniversary special DVD edition with the extra features. Excellent movie from 1993. There’s also the book of the same name by Piers Paul Reid. However, the best book by far that covers this is Nando Parrado’s Miracle in the Andes. Simply amazing and the epilogue is outstanding. Easily worth the price of the book just for that chapter. Some things covered in the book are:
-> Nando’s head injury was worse than I had ever read about before. They found out after being checked over at the hospital that his skull had been fractured in 3 spots.
-> Specialist were positive that the survivors would need lifelong counselling to cope with what they went through. Nando explains that they’ve all pretty well relied on each other to get through rough spells. They get together every year on the anniversary of their rescue.
-> The crash site is fairly easily accessible from the Argentina side and many of the survivors and families of the deceased have made the journey. Nando’s father went 18 times over the years until he wasn’t physically able to do it. Nando as done it numerous times as well. One day his two daughters when they were old enough asked him if they could go along on the next trip. He wasn’t too keen about it but they told him they wanted to see the place they were first born. That if he hadn’t survived they wouldn’t exist. I imagine pretty well all the children and grandchildren of the survivors must feel the same way at some point in their life. Btw, Nando and his two daughters make separate cameo appearances in the movie.
Another btw. There are CZcams videos about people making the trip to the crash site to pay their respects. The ones I’ve watched were led by Eduardo Strauch, one of the survivors. There ones from 2020 & 2021 that really show how desolate the crash site is, even in the summertime.
I remember when it happened. A book which I still have records the events.. it's title is "Alive."
I went for 30 days with no food but i had water & medicine. Could not walk. Survived not in freezing conditions. I met a survivor of that crash as a patient in the hospital and one who survived a shark bite attack. Some phenomenon helps spirit to go on.
I suggest you to read the books written by the survivors, Nando, Canessa and The Society of the Snow
And then the next year see the Netflix Movie
They were all traumatized. Booze and coke for some in order to cope, resilience in others. Bless them all🙏
This is the probably peak of human capabilities and burning desire to survive. This alone survival can make anyone inspired to face the thougest situation in their lives. Hats off to this guys.

I'm very disappointed of the Chilean authorities for cutting off rescue effort two times. My thanks to the old man who was resilient to find his son and to locate the crash site. This story is a fierce dramatic experience.
This was 50 years ago and technology and resources were not the same. Yes they should've kept looking but if I'm not mistaken, rescue parties actually died trying to find them?

No members of the search teams died, but some probably would've if the search hadn't been called off, the extreme weather conditions made it very dangerous to fly over the Andes. And they wouldn't have found them because, contrary to what everyone thought, the plane had crashed in Argentinian territory.

Planes seem to go missing for quite awhile some time....why the heck don't they paint them all extremely bright colors that won't match any background and heck even add some glow in the dark paint so it can also be spotted at night.
also if they tied strings to the planes from the airport - so if the plane ever got lost - just keep pulling on the string until you eventually find it...
and no one had a bic lighter, they last forever

I remember when this happened, it was all over the news. When the movie came out I had to watch it. It's amazing they survived the mountains as long as they did and were able to tell the horror of it. Something I've never forgotten, this story has stayed with me all these years. It's incredible ...

The survivors and the families of the deceased dislike 'Alive'. The survivors have always said, in the interviews they give for the Spanish speaking media, that it is not the real story. For them, it's a very superficial depiction, with stereotyped characters and fictionalised facts, unable to convey what they really suffered and felt in the Andes, .

Climbing for 3 days, and seeing more mountains would have been devastating. I dont know how he kept going. I would have been done.

T̶r̶o̶l̶l̶ O̶v̶e̶r̶l̶o̶a̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ and also the fathers of Roberto Canessa, Gustavo Zerbino, Rafael Echaverran, Gustavo Nicholich, and the mother of Marecelo Perez they all went to Chili’s to look for their sons. When the father of Echaverran who died found out his sun wouldn’t come home he went back himself and cleared his sons body from he mountain.
Nando Parado. He was unconscious after the crash and did not regain conciseness for three days after the crash. He was buried alive in the avalanche and also lost his mother and sister in the ordeal. Yet he was the most determined of all to get out.

The fact that this is 100% real, not scenario from a movie, makes this scarier and amazing in a way.
I also think it's a positive VS negative thing and how positive will always defeat negative. The fact that Nando and Roberto are still alive today is amazing.
This dad is a legend! And these two men who fight to save their lives and the lives of others are truly amazing!
I've watched the movie many times and always cry when they are rescued but to see this for real is even more emotional, what they did to stay alive had to be done but they had so much will in them, nando lost his mum and sister and still had it in him to want to survive not many would have 💙

These men are unbelievable, the strength, courage, determination is beyond exceptional.
Nando Parrado wrote a book, Miracle in The Andes. In it, he writes about the trip, the tragic accident, their time on the mountains, Nando's mission climbing the mountains with Roberto. After a long stretch, the two finally reach Chile, then eventually meet Sergio Catalan. Sergio helps to get the police, who set out to rescue his friends.
These wonderful men are living legends...I don't care what anyone says!-! They defied death and the odds....amazing..miraculous...heroic!!!

I heard stories that many people looked down on them for eating the dead people to survive. So many are quick to judge others - that haven't
walked in their shoes.
I dont care who you are you would do same in that situation. People saying its wrong are probably people whos had an easy life and havent survived anything major. I hope to god, i never have to face eating another person but i know i would if it happened. I wouldnt even lie to myself, all of us would do it.

@@froggergypsy4596 Far from everybody would do it. In fact, most people would curl up in the fuselage, sharing body heat and then fall asleep and eventually die. This story is quite exceptional and the moral issue will always remain. But it's of course most polite not to judge anyone.

To be fair, not like they actively killed them and ate them. They were already dead and desperate times called for desperate needs. The will to survive is something no one can understand unless you are unwillingly placed in that position. Those corpses are the reason those guys lived to tell this story. The legacy of the two boys will forever live and so will the people that passed as they will never be forgotten.
I remember when this happened in 1972 , I was 9 years old and this story was on the news , My dad explained to me the conditions of the Andes mountains, they endured 20 below zero temperatures , my dad explained to me that they would be lucky to survive 2 days because the terrain was so rugged , I was glad when they found the survivors from the 2 guys walking over 37 miles to get help

Imagine how many more victims died a slow death because the search and rescue operations were called off too soon.
Well, when people climb mountains too high, they leave the dead up there since it's too dangerous for helicopter rescue.
Watching these survival stories make me want to do something extraordinary with my life! If people can survive by sheer will and determination in impossible situations, how can I not do everything I can with my life while in the comfort of my own home?! #goals...live every day to the fullest with gratitude and appreciation!

that "crazy old man" is absolutely amazing what a father to grow up with.
Haha, on the contrary, they had a love/hate father-son relationship and after surviving the crash, the son got heavily into drugs due to his conflictive relationship with his father. The son wrote books about it, and to this day he tells this in interviews. He says the one who pushed to never give up searching was his mom, not his dad.
By far one of the greatest survival stories in history hands down

I remember the movie based on this…Alive. I saw this about 20 years ago. It was captivating, sad and horrific to watch, all at the same time. They didn’t mention the dad, but WOW, talk about the persistence of ❤️ love. He kept hoping.
This was such a nice perspective on this survival story, all focused on the bravery and determination of the people. They didn’t sensationalize the eating food parts the way some do. I’m glad to see a more respectful understanding of what happened and the sensible decisions they made to stay alive.
I cried when this finished. Literally tears of joy. 67 days. Surviving off their friends and family. This is just impossible to believe. Brave men.

I am 53 and have been either reading or watching this story for most of my life, and every time I see another show about them it still touches me deeply! Over the years I’ve said many prayers for them all, survivors and deceased. They are truly remarkable men and their story should be taught to school children! The story of obstacles, heartbreak, determination, courage and love! Although I do not know them I still carry them in my heart! God bless
I remember watching the movie that they made about this in the 90’s in the theater. Of all the rescue stories I’ve seen, this one has stuck with me for over 30 years. I just cannot believe the tenacity of spirit that Nando and Roberto had. The boys walking through the mountains in those conditions in order to save themselves and others. I would have lied down and went to sleep after realizing Chile wasn’t below me. I just absolutely can not believe this story and it seems so unbelievable. God Bless the Survivors and those who lost their lives in this tragic incident!
Yes. The Shackleton expedition rescue is pretty amazing as well but those guys were hardened explorers well used to cold weather conditions.

@@christinap-c Yes. First time I read about that incredible saga, I had to put the book down a number of times shaking my head in amazement. As tough and experienced as they were, I often wonder how they would have fared if suddenly placed in a similar situation as the Andes survivors? With no food easily accessible and little in the way of proper clothing and gear. Plus not knowing exactly we’re they are would have been a pretty daunting task surviving until the temperatures warmed up considerably.
This story touched my heart,they survived the unthinkable they are real heroes.we take alot of things for granted.

The amateur team was formed by 16 former students of a school, and only 5 of them survived. The other 11 survivors were guests of the team, most of them heavy smokers and some with previous medical conditions.

This was one of my all time favorite Stories/Films. The resilience and Will to live was remarkable and nothing less than Courageous

"Alive" is an excellent movie that was made about this crash & survival story. There are clips of the movie here in this video. I've watched "Alive" at least 4 times, over the years. The first time i watched it, i went back to the beginning & watched it again. I loved everyone in the movie, like they were my own friends & family members 🙂 The movie, "Alive," does a fantastic job of showing each of the passengers' personalities & how, together, they endured & survived till rescue.
Yes, it holds up well and is pretty accurate for the most part. There’s a Netflix show titled Society of the Snow about this incident that’s supposed to air in 2023. Be interesting to see how they compare.

what I didn't like about the movie though is how they gloss over the rescue part and the importance of Sergio Catalan in the story. Canessa and Parrado set out and suddenly there are helicopters coming in to rescue them. The one Mako88sb mentions about society of the snow is an AWESOME 90 minute documentary about it. Yes, Daniel Pertuz is right. There´s a documentary called 'Society of the Snow' on CZcams. But the new movie of Netflix is also called 'Society of the Snow' or 'La Sociedad de la Nieve', a Spanish film directed by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible, Jurassic World).
In fact, the survivors don´t like the movie 'Alive'. They call it 'the Disney version' because it doesn't show what they really lived in the mountains. They were never consulted by the scriptwriter.
If you really want to know their story, read the books. The survivors say the book 'ALIVE' tells the real facts but focuses on the morbid details. The book 'Society of the Snow' was written by a close friend of the survivors. And there are also books written by some of them, such as 'Miracle in the Andes' by Nando Parrado.

Those two men were extremely strong! Crazy to manage what they did! As for eating people...so what!? I'm sure the people who helped them live, would be glad to know they'd played a part in the survival of so many.
Besides they talked to their parents, and all of them forgave them, and supported them in what they had to do.
Not sure if it's accurate dialogue, but in the movie someone asks, "how do we go home to our families after doing that..." and the response is, "You go home ALIVE." Also in the film, they likened it to blood and body of Christ. - We would all do it. They all did it. Survival instinct is strong. Be horrible of course. But how long had it been since something NOT horrible had happened to them? Eat.

I saw one where a 2 guys were left stranded in the ocean and only one man survived. The other man died about 4 month in. The man that survived was lost in the ocean for 13 months in total!! He wrote a book about his story. The family of the dead man who he was with sued him for cannibalism. What a horrible thing for that family to do to that man after what he went through for 13 months in the middle of the ocean trying to survive! Just disgusting.

The movie “Alive” (1993) was based on this story of these men. I watched the movie a few times before and I thought this was familiar story as I watched this documentary version. The documentary version is pretty good too but the movie was also great. Thanks for sharing this, an incredible story of these men who survived the unthinkable.
I remember watching this as a kid and still remember the part when they decided to eat the dead. The sheer will to live is amazing and the whole crew are amazing to survive all they had to deal with
The survivors dislike the film 'Alive', they say it is not the real story. Actually it's a fictionalised version in which many of the facts were changed and others were made up to give Ethan Hawke's character the role of the group leader. In reality, the leaders were the Strauch cousins. After several expeditions, all of the survivors chose the three strongest expeditionaries, Roberto, Nando and 'Tintín', being Canessa the leader of them.
It was several of the boys who came up with the idea of eating the corpses, not only Nando. And Gustavo Zerbino was never against it, in fact, he, the Strauches and Carlitos Páez were among the ones who first thought of it. Then they discused the idea with the others and most of them agreed to do it.
They have now society of the snow now on Netflix better than ALIVE

I think it made all the difference. I don’t know how anyone could have made that 10-day trek, which included scaling a 15,000 foot peak without any mountaineering equipment, and having eaten nothing but raw meat for two months, unless they were in top physical condition to start with
Only 16 people on that plane were amateur rugby players who got together on weekends to play rugby as they used to in school, and only 5 of them survived. The other surviving passengers were guests of the team, most of them were heavy smokers and some had previous medical conditions, some were just acquaintances and others didn't know each other before the crash. This is a story about love and friendship, but bonds of friendship that grew in the Andes.
The team took control of the situation until the captain's death on day 16. After the avalanche, the Strauch cousins, who were not part of the team, became the leaders. It's true that the three final expeditionaries, chosen by the group for being the strongest ones, were rugby players, but there were other hikers who made several previous expeditions and did not belong to the rugby team.
This is an amazing story. I always watch the documentaries about this plane crash as the resilience, strength and bravery of these survivors is astounding. Some of it is unfortunate, but it shows how strong humans are at surviving anything. It's so wonderful to see there are actual survivors of plane crashes. It's such an amazing feat to survive so long, and in this environment. It breaks my heart that the survivors have endured emotional trauma over simply surviving.
They literally crashed into the border of Chile and Argentina ending up on the Argentinian side. Had they known that they could have hiked east and reached civilization much sooner...there is actually a hotel less than 10 miles from the crash site in Argentina. Hiking west into Chile, they had to hike over 50 miles before seeing a single soul!
Having Google Earth back in those days would have been a HUGE asset! LOL
The name of that hotel is Sosneado Hot Spring Hotel and it was abandoned in 1953. Really not much left of it that would have helped since it had been thoroughly scavenged and didn’t even have a roof. The Andes happened to have the largest amount of snow that had been seen in decades that winter of 1972. Of course when the crash happened, it was early spring but winter like conditions would plague them throughout most of their ordeal. Not sure when anybody would have been in that location of the abandoned hotel that could have helped any survivors that walked out? Likely they would have kept walking, which of course would be much easier to do on a road , until they came across someone. Btw, the actual distance from the crash site to the abandoned hotel is closer to 17 miles. Still tough terrain but not having to climb Mt Seler would certainly help.
The problem is they still needed something to keep them alive at night or during inclement weather. They didn’t find the tail section until about a month after the crash. Finding out they couldn’t get the radio to work and deciding to use the insulation and make a sleeping bag was a key part of their survival. It took a couple weeks to sew it together using fine copper wire. By that point it was late spring and enough snow had melted that any rivers they came across would be pretty well impassable. Eduardo Strauch has been leading fan expeditions to the crash site for years from the Argentine side for years now. He’s often been asked if Nando & Roberto would have been better off going east. His opinion is no because of the flooded streams and rivers they would have had to deal with. Of course they encountered the same problem when they went west but fortunately they came across Sergio Catalán when they did. Who knows how much further they would have had to go if not for that fortuitous encounter.

Almost every wonder show , I shouldn't be alive show , the survival shows...each one a plane comes looking and the victim can see the plane and is waving their arms, I mean they can see the color of the pilots clothes , but yet that plane or CAN NOT EVER see them !!! The plane can't be found from a crash and a plane can never see the prople lost and call off the search .
Not possible. They are white because the white absorbs heat. If they paint them real bright/glow in the dark, they probably would crash more frequently.

Yes, they certainly did. One way or another, they at least knew what happened to their loved ones. Back in 1961, a Chilean DC-3 with 24 people onboard went missing in the Andes and wasn’t found until 2015.
Just the fact that many of them survived the crash itself is remarkable. Then to survive. Many days after under those conditions it's just a miracle.

amazing to me how those 2 young men without prior knowledge of how to climb mountains especially icy snowy ones, and most of all without proper safety gear clothing or even food/water to make it, they still traverse the terrain to find help. absolutely incredible that the didnt stumble into a crevase or slip and fall down the mountains, crazy what the human body can with stand when faced with a situation like this.
When I was in grade school my family watched the film made about this. Watching this documentary made me realize this was the actual thing that film back then was based on. I could never forget that film even as a child, here 15+ yrs later glad to have found this documentary.

This was an amazing show to watch. The strength of those passengers and encouraging each other was just phenomenal. No one can really imagine what these young people went through. Such an amazing show of courage. Like wow!
Man I get so mad when I see how lousy they were searching for them. Obviouly they got off course. Why wouldnt you expand the searching team. They have to be out there, there is no way you just stop searching

The search was dangerous for the planes and helicopters involved. They were very likely to have died on impact. How often are there survivors after a place crash? Especially in the mountains. Assuming even that there were survivors, they would have been expected too die quickly of exposure because of the temperature. The chance that there would have been any survivor to begin with, let alone after one week, was essentially nil. How much risk should have the rescuers taken, how many of them would have had to die before you'd have called off a dangerous and hopeless search yourself? It's perfectly reasonable to not risk more lives when you're pretty certain that the best you'll find is cadavers.
Forget about the cold weather and injuries, eating a RAW human flesh is the greatest courage any human being can possibly do.

For most that don't have a clue about survival, or what it means/ looks like for people to overcome random experiences (especially when their mind is balanced and sound) it gives insight into the other side of living life........when one's instincts kick in and makes the most with basically nothing, in order to survive. Watching something as such can be entertaining, but watching it doesn't come close to actually having to experience it.
For all the survival videos of this channel I've watched, this one really brings me into tears
What a riveting story. The will and determination they showed was incredible. This is what real heroism is.
