Well they were at the top of the Andes mountain in winter in a tiny white plane. They did arial searches but it was like finding a needle in a hay stack. There's a Netflix movie about it called Society of the Snow (or something like that). What is most wild is that they waited over a month and succumbed to cannabalism (no judgement) before finally even attempting to go down the mountain, even though they knew the search had been called off after 10 days (they managed to get a small radio working which is how they knew). They also had cigerettes and lighters, so they continued to smoke (also no judgement), but never once tried to make a fire, so a number of them froze to death. It's an interesting story about survival but also a truely baffling one.

I saw the two men that made the extremely rugged descent interviewed. The only thing that helped the one was recalling that in Catholicism, they believe that when the priest prays over Communion, that the wine and bread become the Body and Blood of Christ. Somehow, this thought carried him through and kept him from trauma over having partaken of a dead passenger to be able to be strong enough to survive that treacherous trek for help.
They had a rough go if it. Thankfully, they made it, and the others were found because of it.

Unfortunately, for many years this event was mostly known in the world because of the film 'Alive', a distorted version of the facts. And even worse, a lot of the videos in English (not this one) on this incident are based on that movie. The survivors dislike it because it's superficial and unrealistic, they've never seen themselves reflected in the characters.
While in 'Alive', Ethan Hawke's character is the 'superhero' and the other surviving passengers are practically passive spectators; in reality, all of them had a crucial role in their struggle for survival. The main leaders and strategists were the Strauch cousins, but as the survivors say, each one of them was a leader depending on the moment and the skills needed during the 72 days they were trapped in the Andes.

Society of the Snow, a film with Uruguayan and Argentinian actors. The true story based on the book of the same name by Pablo Vierci and extensive interviews with the survivors and the victims' families.
The critics and the audience call it a masterpiece. The survivors say it's so realistic that it made them feel again what they felt in 1972. The deceased's relatives say they felt they were seeing their loved ones again, and that it helped ease the sorrow they'd felt for more than 50 years.

It is quite annoying for those of us who are Uruguayans and from this part of the world, that of everything that can be learned from this story of struggle and resilience, the only thing they talk about and repeat is that they ate human flesh. It is very sad, it is sad because they did not do it for pleasure, they did it because they wanted to live, they did it so they could tell their families that they were alive and that they had not lost them all, because they wanted to see their brothers, sisters, children, fathers, mothers, entire families. Because their families believed that they had lost them and they had to live with that pain without knowing if they lived or not. And also tell those relatives of those who died, of those who could not return, that they fought as a team and did everything possible so that everyone who was there returned alive, although some could not. The morbidity is sad and that they only see the story for that reason without knowing what it meant for them and for us Uruguayans, what they did as a team and for their friends. They are free of all guilt, their fight was for love, love that was always for others.

People in the Comments here seem to forget that Communications, as well as Air Support are different now, and not only that, but the snow was so bad that the Helicopters could not just zig zag around the Mountain looking in the snow, for a white plane, indefinitely. The local rescue organizers and the Country Officials called off the rescue, and people in this thread are blaming America for giving up because "it was too expensive, and America didn't want to spend the money".
I don't get it, that even though we help in any catastrophe we arallowed to, we are always blamed for either being too late, or for leaving... when it is the 'Host Country' that calls the shots.

This story stuck with me from the moment I first read it in my early teens, I’m now 37. I couldn’t help putting myself in their position as I read the story & I just felt absolutely crushed for them. They tried eating the stuffing out of the seats to begin with.. which ironically wasn’t mentioned in this short, likely for sensationalism & shock value. If memory serves me correct, some even refused to eat their friends & starved to death. This was the hardest decision for them, either watch one another perish like they’d watched others, or resort to eating their dear friends, & all agreed they’d hope their friends would do the same if the tables were turned for survival. They also had one failed attempt at escaping for help. They did what they had to do for survival, to see their loved ones again. Heartbreaking all round x

I remember this very well: the crash; the abandonment of the search; the astonished reaction when news came through that survivors had been found; the worldwide interest; the "questions" and ghoulish interest as to how they had survived; and the later books, documentaries and Hollywood film "Alive" (based on Piers Paul Reed's book of the same title). Extraordinary that you should have such a close knowledge of one of those two men who made that remarkable and desperate life or death walk for survival.

There's a movie about this. I watched it. Was very sad. I forgot what it was called.
But there was a few women that survived the crash. But cause of the cold they end up dying. I remember the man said eat any flesh but not her. He buried his wife in the snow.
    This movie made me cry.
All 16 or 15 men survived.
3 men went to get help. They took some flesh with them. Which they ate frozen. But that was there only survival. They tried to grab what food and supplies they could from the plane. The food ran out. They went 1 day without food. And they decided there only survival was the deceased flesh. I wouldn't want to be in that situation but I will do what I have to.
3 men went out to look for help. They carried what they could with them to survive.
1 man had to go back as they was running out of food.
So 2 went on with the journey. I don't know how many days it took them. But someone saw them. I remember they offered them bread. They was so relieved to find help and get better food.
Try searching for a movie about a plane crash in chili that happened in October 1972

Such a painful story. No one should have judged these men negatively. They survived.

I remember this! I was a young mother of a newly born baby girl at the time! I was so impressed that the instinct to survive is so strong. When one dies, the essence of that person (the soul) leaves the body. What’s left - unless cremated - sustains life in one form or another. These wonderful survivors lived on to have families, careers, friends.
May God bless both the living and the dead! ❤

This is an unbelievable story of hope. The survivors were pulled from the brink of death and pushed the boundaries of human endurance. The cannibalism was such a small detail in this story ❤

They did what they needed to do to survive it wasn’t like they had a choice… they prayed and asked god to forgive them, they lived because GOD had a plan for them! This story is so heartbreaking and encouraging.

These people did what they had to do to survive the most horrific experience of their lives. How truly traumatized these poor men must’ve been that actually found the courage to keep going even tho the rest of the world had given up on them 😢

I've heard that it was way too dangerous because of the very bad weather. More people would've died and the victims wouldn't be found cause the pilot gave wrong indications.
They all thought that victims were in Chile when actually the plane crashed in Argentina

at that time the weather in the Andes was very aggressive, they gave up the search because a freezing season was coming, in addition to the hostility of the climate they were looking for corpses from the beginning.
