- Survivors of the 1972 Andes plane crash opened up to ET about their harrowing experience, which was recently told in Netflix's 'Society of the Snow.' Uruguayan rugby players Roberto Canessa and Nando Parrado recounted what happened in the 72 days they waited to be rescued, from enduring lethal avalanches to the group resorting to cannibalism in the face of multiple life-threatening circumstances. In this 1993 interview, they also described pivotal moments that were portrayed in J.A. Bayona's Oscar-nominated film, including the pair's 10-day hike into Chile and the helicopter rescue of their fellow survivors. 'Society of the Snow' streams on Netflix.

Society of the Snow deserves more recognition, such a remarkable movie!
Crazy how powerful the human mind is and what it can produce had they not told themselves they can make it out there they wouldn’t simple as that them saying listen we gonna make it out here doing something is what kept them alive had they said it’s no chance they would Al have sat there an waited to die the fact that they knew it was hopeless but still said let’s try these methods in a hopeless situation is proof the mind is capable of almost anything cause that was a 100 percent death sentence until they beat it
Yes it does
I can't stop thinking of this film ever since I watched it. It definitely deserves an oscar. A remarkable movie.
It's so cute to listen to all these newcomers to this fantastic story it's been a part of my life for more than 20 some years hard to shake this story it can obsess you
Same. And just finished the book "Alive". If you are fascinated by the movie same will you by this book.
@@annapanke I suggest reading the book Society of the snow the movie follows that book not alive because the society of the snow book was written by someone who was friends with the survivors since childhood so it's more accurate I think
@@maricopa_today8619 thank you for the recommendation. I will read it too.
I salute these people they sacrifice their life 10 days walking on a dangerous snowy mountain to save the life of their friends God Bless you more
I can't never get tired of listening to them talking about their ordeal in Los Andes.
The fact Barbie got nominated for best picture over this is absolutely shocking!
It did get nominated for best foreign language picture
@@crystaliclake Yeah... Shouldve been nominated for best picture period.
having an issue with the Barbie movie instead of any other nominee just shows that you either didn’t see it and judge out of ignorance, or seen it and didn’t understand it.
Unfortunately you have to be a once in a decade foreign language film phenomenon to be nominated for Best Picture. This movie deserves it but not for the Academy’s 😢
@@crystaliclake It should have been nominated for Best Film NOT just Foreign Film.
The film was remarkable. I was devastated that it didn’t win best foreign film at The Oscars. Truly an award deserving film.
Love this. One recommendation for those who have not watched the movie. Make sure you watch it in Spanish, when you listen to them speaking Spanish with the accent the real survivors have, makes the movie more authentic. Besides, the emotions are transmitted in a better way when you watch it in Spanish.
THE most important point. Some people do not understand… people lose so much meaning and emotions when they don’t watch or listen in OV. Definitely use those subtitles.
Yes, but their accent was hard to understand

11:44 this shot of Fito on the helicopter watching the plane slowly fade out of sight… one of my favourite parts of this movie. I can’t even imagine how they must’ve been feeling on that day
The Society of the Snow, the new film is a true jewel!!! Must watch!
First of all is the first film that really shows what happened without any "Hollywood" dramatisation and also shows the real discussions, the real dialogues, the real mountains and is the only film the survivors really feel that the narrative is what really happened and it also shows how they, and this includes the ones that died worked all together for the good of the group!
J. Bayona did a masterpiece of a film here... he deserves the oscar!
70 days! Unbelievable determination. I’m so sorry for everyone involved.
The walker kissed the cross on the rosary and that's why God helped them...
Also the leader was of German descent! Sure strong willed folks ...still.
And despite Hollyweirds strangism for cannibalism it had NOTHING to do with it! It was pure SURVIVAL WILLPOWER!

Hopefully more movies in Spanish get more Oscars
This version needs to be shown in the theatres/cinemas. It was quite emotional and impressionable.
It was released worldwide for movie theatres in December
@@Emmenimaliste good to hear 👍
The investor was Netflix, so it only showed in cinemas for a few weeks, before moving to streaming on Netflix from the beginning of January 2024.
@@Dellasus2011 It was released in cinemas so it could qualifiy for oscars
Roberto and Nando legends.
I can't believe that avalanche situation was in total darkness inside the plane. Just terrifying.
How people survive such things ( plane crash, trapped minors etc.,) is so fascinating . Such determination.
I just watched that movie tonight… Simply amazing everything about it, especially the story… It deserves an Academy award!
How ironic to come across this interview with these two young survivors; I had just watched the movie last night! BRAVO for what all of you did in surviving under such horrific conditions! May the rest of your lives be very blessed 😊❤️
Lol do you honestly think that it's a coincidence? I promise you it's not. Where was your cellphone while you were watching this movie? I'd be willing to bet it was in the same room as you were in. It listens to you. You can turn on or off whatever feature u want it always will listen to you and knows everything about you. Smarten up.
@@navyton1are you nuts?
@bellaperuana64 lol r u? Do your damn research and you would learn that your iPhone listens to you it's not a coincidence. It's happened to me and my friends on multiple occasions so your obviously ill equipped in the brain department to realize this 😅
@@navyton1your cellphone does not listen to you for advertising purposes because it doesn't need to, there's already enough data to predict what your watching habits that you can be advertised to more accurately than you could imagine
We do not think it was just cannibalism, Mr. Canessa. You are heroes. ❤️
It was anthropophagy, not cannibalism, and there was ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER option.
@@BeatlemaccaARWhat are you talking about? It is cannibalism. What do you think that word means?
@@IlovedallthepeopleI believe the distinction is often that cannibalism is when the person is killed and eaten, anthropophagy is when you consume the flesh of a human who has died of other causes.
@@piratesswoop725 Thats completely wrong. Canibalism means eating someone from your own species. Antropophagy means eating a human being. A wolf eating another wolf is a cannibal, a wolf eating a human means it commited antropophagy. For humans eating other humans both things happen at once for obvious reasons.
@@piratesswoop725 cannibalism means eating a member of your own species, anthropophagy means humans eating humans. It's the exact same thing in this case.
This is the absolute best quality tv footage from the early 90s I’ve ever seen! This looks like HD footage that was shot last week!
wow it wasn’t until i saw this comment that i realized this interview was old! i had a brief thought that i thought nando must have dyed his hair for awards season or something, but no, it’s a few decades old!
We need more lessons like this, more movies like this.
This was a movie based on a true story, why would you want more people to go through that?
@@CarlosGarcia-tv4rk did I say people should suffer and survive?!!

A touchable picture❤ I've seen the movie 3 times and each time there's something new. It's wonderful
Thank you for sharing this amazing story. Its also nice to recognise that all this survivors even after all they went through in the plane crash plus their determination to survive they went back to their life, became professionals, continue with their life, achieve amazing things, some keep saving lives as doctors and also life examples of keep fighting your battles or as they normally say "each one of you have your personal mountain", very inspiring. In Uruguay they are heroes but they are respected and they can live a normal life without being harassed. There is many interviews and they all worth seeing, it may help you change your perspective in life. Cheers
This new movie is so much better than Alive

Heroes. All of them.
Getting buried in snow, at night... I can't think of anything more nightmarish. I really hope these men were compensated somehow on their return
Yeah they got actual food
It was hard to watch but an amazing movie
Seems like even 20 years after the crash Nando and Roberto didn’t fully accept that something like that happened to them like they wished it didn’t happened to them unlike in recent interviews where they have accepted it as something had to happen in order for them to be where they are today. As they got older, they began to slowly embrace God’s plan for them.
As time passes on their wounds get into scars. Their situation is so horrific, that even after when they were in their 50's, it still lingers. Now that they are old and wise of years, its something which stays with them and with it comes wisdom.
It's not the type of trauma that is taken lightly to forget, because they passed it that no human being could ever imagine conquer doing
“god’s plan for them” okay so his plan was to torture them for months, mentally and physically, push them to the point of eating people they cared for, just so they can….grow up and have wisdom? I mean I absolutely respect beliefs, but that’s just not what any God would do.
The English word for "God" comes from the Hebrew word Elohim which means gods. The "gods" that the ancient people worshipped in the beginning were the stars. So the Bible's Genesis 1:1 should have been written as "In the beginning the stars created the heaven and the earth".
One of the best 👌
It wasn’t your time ✝️god bless u guys , so sorry u went through that 😞
It was their time, they just say no to death
….so it was everyone else’s time? even the 18 year old kid?
Well apparently so, As painful as it is I believe we all have a time. Different numbers we were all given from 0-over 100. I’ve always wondered what my number is. Doesn’t everyone?
Damn this movie was really good. I was totally immersed n it was all I thought about man I cant imagine what they went through just watching it must've been hard as hell
I would have died due to exposure. I can’t even deal with 40F never mind -40F. I cried after watching this. I don’t know how they did it.
Wow this interview with Roberto Canessa was from more than 25 years ago !
Great movie
What an incredible movie! It does deserve an Oscar!
Wow. That sure was one helluva ordeal. I watched the Alive movie many years ago. It was a really good movie.
Believe me when I tell you you this movie is better than Alive in every conceivable way possible.
@@AlexRN Okay, thanks. Maybe I will watch it then.
@@PaiviProject don’t just take my word for it; all of the survivor agree that Society of the Snow is the more truthful, more realistic movie by far. They say Alive is the “Disneyfied version” of their ordeal in comparison to how bad things were for them. By the end you’ll believe the characters have been stranded 72 days in bad conditions unlike Alive where they’re just a little bit dirty but not much else.
just brave
Why is Spanish movies being overlooked at the Oscars over the years?
It’s actually Oscar nominated
why do people assume things and talk about them before finding out for sure??

At least read the Wikipedia article about the events to make an informed opinion.
Eating the flesh of the dead, and then explaining to a horrified media the reasons they did it in a way that public opinion understands their decision requires guts.
Another distraction...
