AKG P120 Condenser Mic Review / Test
Vložit
- čas přidán 15. 05. 2017
- Today, I review the AKG P120; a relatively budget condenser mic that rivals the AT2020. This thing sounds great all around, but picks up quite a bit of background noise, but if you're not concerned with background noise, I would absolutely recommend this mic.

Thank you. I've subbed.
this mic is a workhorse, I've used it for hip hop vocals for about 7 years now.
I've used it for record, vocals, guitars, bass, even percussion and a kick and it's great.
is it good?
@@bugy3519 it's excellent for the price, you can get great sounds if you know how to use it.
At2035 is pretty good as well
@@josuezt AKG Perception 120 VS Samson C01 ?
Just got a P120 because I liked how it sounded in this demo. After the first test I'll have to say it sounds damn awesome on every thing I tried it so far!
Thanks for your great vids!
HELL YEAH! That's what I like to hear! =)
Podcastage what's a good mic for rapping? Love your videos btw
Just get a mic that doesn't have too much of a boost on the low end and more in the mid and high end because when ever you put (power or whatever you call it)strength in your voice it will distort the sound when you're rapping or make everything sound muddy... so for a good cost for performance mic for rapping i would say the Tascam TM-80 would be a good option :D
p.s. get a foam cover thing for the mic too
Realest review I've ever seen. Right on man, subscribed!
bandrew, you're killing it. I love how you're completely honest with your opinion on the mics. you deserve way more subs.
Thanks man!
No problem my man!
Bandrew I really like your reviews, but I think that as most of them are in a properly acoustically treated room, it is difficult to know how much, and what kind of reverb they pick up. If you could also include a test where you test these microphones in an untreated room, I think it'll be a great addition for people who can't afford to get their room acoustically treated, and are looking to make videos with good audio.
Thought the same thing.
*_Fantastic_** point and idea.*
Such respectful consideration and delivery, too.💚
I disagree. Anyone can throw up some some auralex foam, hang a dead cat, put down a thick carpet, or even hang up a heavy comforter against a wall. It’s a shot in the dark, but often it’s better than nothing. Or maybe it still didn’t fix the problem. My dad’s an audio engineer, and to really do it right you need to take measurements of the room with a TEF (or some other time delay spectrometry device), plan the acoustic treatment accordingly, and retest. Higher frequencies and lower frequencies are absorbed or reflected by different materials. You can put up treatment designed to mostly absorb/dissipate low frequencies and still have high frequency reflections, or vice versa. Just because you see foam on the wall, that doesn’t mean you know how that space behaves from this side of youtube.
@@jonnda "hang a dead cat" had me howlinggg😂😂😂😂
Wow, what an amazing review. Quick, concise, EXACTLY what the people need. Liked.
Dude I love your review-automatically adding this to my Sweetwater cart. Thanks for the rad walkthrough!
Thanks for making this! I always watch your videos before I buy a mic
I am a singer and I want to upgrade my home vocal recording setup from usb condenser to XLR.
I am confused with the following options:
1. AKG P120
2. AKG P220
3. Lewitt LCT240 Pro
4. SE Electronics X1a
Suggest me which one to choose and why?
Note : I have a non-treated room.

Most underrated youtuber ever!, Your videos are amazing
You are too kind!
Dig your reviews (and your style). Thanks for the info.
This is the best mic review I´ve seen in youtube so far.
You're too kind.
Great video man. Covered exactly what I wanted to know about the Mic. Had it for a few years, finally got a 48v phantom power for it, but wasn't too sure about the switches on the front. This video answered that for me perfectly =)
Thanks for this. I'm pondering this mic. You were right-it's between this and the AT 2020 for me.
Wow I was just looking at this and then you reviewed it 👌
This mic has been on my radar for a while. Was surprised to see it in my notifications. (thought it was a receipt for a second lol!) good, comprehensive as always Bandrew. A worth it mic for sure
Thank you kindly sir. I was a bit surprised.
Podcastage
Apparently, according to Booth Junkie (a great VO artist I follow here on CZcams, go follow him for great content) the discontinued AKG Perception 100 (P100) which you can get on ebay or Craigslist for potentiality a lot cheaper (it doesn't have pad switches) also competes with Neumann TLM series. This P120 seems potentiality to sit within that realm too. After watching the videos Mike DelGaudio did on the P100 I'd be interested in your thoughts if you can find one. Cheers pal.
+Podcastage Can you do a comparison between XLR to 3.5mm and XLR to USB cable??? and test it out only in the Dynamic microphone because i'm using a dynamic microphone for gaming right now and i have a really tight budget.
My microphone for 2 years now. Still loving it!
What interface do you use?
Thanks for an honest review, I bought two of these suckers! And, this video was a helping fact for my budge.
Thanks man-
Sup...mind letting one go?? Help a brotha out haha. For sale of course
Wich one would you prefer? This one or the behringer B1? They are around the same pricing 🤔🤔
I trust AKG a little bit more than Behringer if I'm being honest. The AKG also doesn't have a 10dB boost, which is pretty drastic, it's only 6db, so it should sound slightly more natural and less overboosted.
@@Podcastage Thank you 🙏🙏
Muy buenas reviews eh Bayron? jajajajaj. Salu2 desde medellín.
@@Podcastage am i buy sir?
Concise and informative. Subbed. Nice job, nice format.
I agree i like how he got straight to the point and told me everything i wanted to know without making it boring and hard to understand.
Thanks man. Will get that one then haha. Been struggling to figure out wich mic will be best for my covers and music
amazing sound from that mic :O
Yo... This channel has supported me so much for my music tech course... Keep up the good work man x3
Happy to hear that.
This was my first microphone about 13 years ago (wow), bluish/silverish color, and it did hell of a job, very versatile, very open and very bright. It did have some issues with the reflections though, I was fighting the comb filtering pretty often. I guess the newer version is quite better
Hello, good evening.
May i ask you, which one is better mic for vocal recording? AKG P120 or Samson C03?
Thank you!
Love your videos. Thanks for reviewing this mic. Also, dig your hoody. Are you an AVA, Tom Delonge and Blink 182 fan? Do you write and record your own music? If yes, where can I find it?
Love the reviews!
Hi
Great Video mate
Is this mic better than Audio Technica AT2020
And I do have a 48v phantom power but like USB Mics
I want to record acoustic guitars so is AT2020 USB a better option ??
Thanks ..
Fantastic review!! Thanks mate!!
Would you happen to know how to set up the mic clip? I can’t figure out the bolt screw. It’s too small to fit into the mic stand. I watched another video and the person said to unscrew the bolt using your thumb. I’ve tried doing that and nothing happens. Is there any way you can help or upload a video please
great video i initially wanted the at2020 but after taking a wasted trip to guitar center " South FL "coconut creek" location which they said they had in stock and waited 30min and nothing. while walking around and quick google search of this mic i bought it and its been nice. funny how i stumbled on your video.. thanks for the info and great video
hey Bandrew, big fan of your reviews..so i went for this one over the at2020 after watching your review and tbh i'm so glad i went for this one..
the last two songs i've covered on my channel is with this one and they sound amazing..
Is it that better than the at2020
Hi, amazing video. One question: AKG P120 or NT1? I want to record Piano, acustic and electric guitar, vocals and harmonica.
Nice review! which one would you recommend that doesn't pick so much background noise? ^_^
That's a great review, bro!
Hello, do you have any advice about musical voice recordings, what microphone should I use? Most USB mics that I tried before doesn't sound good and i only have a windows 10 pc for now, so what do you think about xlr to USB, or do you have any other suggestions?
I have a request: Can You Review The Nady SCM-800?
That's already on the voting poll.
recommend any new affordable headsets with an awesome mic and great n adjustable sound/volume?
I agree. I have it and it picks up all kinds of sounds in my house. Keyboard, even if I move a bit. But sound is great if there is zero background noise.
Use the twenty decibels decrease
What mic stand would you recommend for the AKG p120?
Can you do a vs of this and the AT2020 maybe?
Saw someone using this mic connected to a Apollo Twin x, but it's very expensive, and then I checked your Scarlett Solo (think 3rd Gen) and it's better but was wondering about other possible cheaper alternatives, that you still would recommend?
Hello Sir, do you review Mic Warm 47JR? Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks.
So It may seem like a weird question but what would be better here for recording, Shure SM58 or the AKG P120? they're both the same price but which one would give me more bang for my buck in terms of recording vocals?
Thumbs up and a comment for that little improv with the acoustic
Hi!
I would like to record acoustic and electric guitar. Which is the better choice?
AKG P120 or Focusrite's CM25?
Could you possibly review the Aokeo AK-80? It's had good reviews on amazon would love to hear you thoughts on it.
I have this mic. I am using it for my YT site as well as my podcast. I run it through my Zoom H4n. I agree it does pick up background noise. When my AC kicks in I can hear it.
This for $90, I think I just found my next condenser. I miss having one around...
Hey there kind sir! You've earned my subscription, though that's nothing special, just know I've been using CZcams since I was little, and you're one of my now three subscriptions. Keep up the good work, my friend!
Appreciate that.
Can you please do the box content part using "special asmr techniques"?
I'd LOVE to see a review of it's big brother...the P220. It's transformer coupled, which supposedly smooths the response. I think it would probably also perform better at rejecting off axis sounds.
I am a singer and I want to upgrade my home vocal recording setup from usb condenser to XLR.

@@IshaanNigamOfficial I'm not sure if this question was addressed to me or to Bandrew...so here goes.
Of the four mics you listed, I would chose the Lewitt LCT240 Pro.
1. Because the mic it is based on (AKG C214) is the cardioid version of an absolute recording classic.
2. Because it's a workhorse mic which sounds great on a wide variety of sources.
3. Because it's priced great at $149.

Huh?
I bought one of these today based on your review and an article I read about recording classical guitar in Classical Guitar magazine.
Is it any good?
weebemo - when I posted, I hadn’t yet tried it, I’m happy enough with it. But I’m just learning how to use microphones for recording the guitars I build.
Which would win between this and the MXL 770 for voiceover in your opinion?
akg p120 or akg p170 or audio technica at2035 for acoustic guitar fingerstyle? please help me choose T_T thanks!
I know this is an old video but I was wondering what mic stand did u use in this video or at least what mic stand do u recomend now. Tnx.
Whats the difference in tone with the P120 and AT2020? Also, does the P120 reject plosives a bit better than the AT2020?
Can I use it for recording my song or should I upgrade to rode NT1 A?

Nice video , thank u for all these reviews. I'm currently searching for a microphone (since I'm a voice actor). I wonder which is better between this and the Behringer b1
The B-1 is on the voting poll.
I really like this microphone but I lost the adapter for that came with it is there a way where I can order a microphone stand for it
How is this microphone for musical theater singers? How does it do with belting, and high notes and lots of reverberation in the notes? Please answer ASAP
Ok, this is spooky. I have indeed been checking out the other one (AT2020, reviewed in a previous vid) and now I’ve just watched this AND I’m already buying the Focusrite (Scarlett solo). So, cheers! Massive help. My music playing partner and me are 3-4 hours by boat and car from each other. I need straight forward, easy, good sounding nicely priced er, stuff, so I can send it to her. Great video and great hat (I live on a windy Scottish isle, hats are good)
This channel is the king of entry level gear
What microphone stand did you use ?
AKG P120 or the shure sm58?
I really want a good high sensitivity microphone under 100$
I have this ...i can vouch for its quality and its ruggedness is super awesome...
do you think it's better than the Audio Technica AT2020?
Can i use this microphone for vocals????
And instruments recording??
akg p120 or at2035 for acoustic guitar fingerstyle?
can you show us all the mics you collected?
I bought this mic a couple days ago and I realized that the mic just gives a static noise and can only hear your voice if you scream into it and you sound 50 feet away. And the only way for the mic to work if noise suppression is tuned on then it sounds normal but the mic doesn’t sound good. And in softwares that the mic works in that don’t need noise suppression the voice is great but there is the same amount of static noise in the back as loud as my voice. I need a fix. I’m hoping an audio interface will fix it at a later date but I can’t get one now. I’m only using 48v phantom power.
Excuse me. Would you please do a rode nt1 mic versus an akg p120... Settle our argument please?
is it a good ideal to buy this mic for voiceover ?
I am using behringer c1 for my CZcams songs, would it be worth upgraring to P120?
Good review man. Thanks...
I purchased this mic, and I am hearing constant whisper sounds from background even my room is quiet. Also when I move my chair, I can clearly hear that annoying sound. Keyboard typing sound is filtered by google meet nicely! I set Focusrite db setting to almost 60%, otherwise i cannot hear anything.
Am i missing something to get clear sound like you ?
Akg p120 vs Akg p220
For rap vocals
Which one
have you done a review on the akg 220 🤔🤔
What’s should I put the low cut on for rapping to the straight line or the other one
I tried connecting it to my harbinger mixer and it doesn’t work do you know how to fix that?
Is this mic suitable to record rain, nature and thunderstorm sound?
Mine does not sound as clean as yours and I don't know what to do about it. Does anyone have any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?
Hey plz can u recommend what other equipment do we need along with the microphone...like which audio interface and other stuff...
Can always recommend thr Scarlett Solo for around 100 bucks - fantastic interface with 48V phantom Power and Line + XLR input
Can you do a Versus for the P120 and the Neat King Bee?
thats sounds like a great mic! what setup can you build with a decent to good sounding mic, an mixing board (for post) that can connect to a pc using a usb port and a pre-amp if needed?(not too expensive, around 500 to 700 euro/dollars)
There's about a million different variations you can build.
If i dont have a treated room what mic would you recommend then?
Sir, i want to record vocals. Which mic is best
Akg p120 or Mxl 770?
It depends on your voice also
i love this channel😎
Thanks.
Can you do MXL 770X? Or Røde NT2-A? Or both?
Does this mic do good with vocal screams?
What is better? This mic or the Audio Technica AT3035?
Where can I get an affordable adjustable mic stands
i need some help mine is making a loud buzzing sound and idk what to do
Guys ,I just got this model from ebay but it came with no stand adaptor. Any one knows if I can just use a shock mount or if this piece is sold separately?
I see that the audio w as boosted 10 db in post, does this mean you have to turn up the gain if you are going to use this mic in a live setting?
Laurenz Anton Chico yes.
Please anyone help me decide, Behringer C03 or Samson C 3 or akg P120 or lewitt???
What stand do you use for this mic test?
Hey bandrew whats better umc404 or 1202usb (sorry for bad english)
I was looking for a mic to record some let's play style videos but with two people sitting side by side. I would also like to record some group tabletop role playing games with people sitting around an average sized dining room table. I was hoping to find a single mic solution to keep the budget down. Would you recommend something like this? If not would would be a good setup? I know these are not optimal scenarios.
No. I think your let's play audio will suffer, but you need a mic with an omnidirectional setting, so perhaps the Blue Yeti.
