This is very similar to it's predecessors the H1 and H1n, but it introduces 32-bit floating point which means you are theoretically unable to distort your converters; although you can still distort the microphone capsules if you're recording something very loud. This is pretty bad advice, everyone's settings will be different. Just showing your own settings isn't going to help most people. It would help if you showed us how to understand and adjust the settings so that we can make amendments according to our own devices and environment. Great advice with changing the PC microphone settings to 0db, so that we get the raw microphone sound.

It's known as a kick mic by pros. It's fabulous on the kick drum. Phenominal. The mid-forward and 'tinny' sound on the human voice and (god forbid) electric guitars, is happening because they don't posess the low frequencies of a bass drum. Human voice and guitars don't have that kind of low frequency, so of course this mic is lacking it on those subjects.

Thanks for this. I have just ordered it as a first mic for Teams/Zoom calls and occasional podcast. Wanted a dynamic one with software but the cheaper ones come with no software. Not an audio expert and won't be editing audio so the simplicity of this and being able to save settings and have the processing (e.g. noise gate) done onboard the mic seems very helpful.

@Podcastage Wow Bandrew! Kind of surprised to see a review of the M179 at this point in time, ha! I'm a drummer/percussionist and sax player but record all types of instruments. IMO, these are really decent mics for the money and very versatile as you discovered. In 2015 I was looking for decent but inexpensive mics for my rack & floor toms as well as options for a kick-out, in addition to a stereo pair that I could use for drum O/H, multi-instruments, and vocals as well. Warren at Zen Pro Audio recommended the M179 as a good budget option for toms & kick, as well as the E100s for the other stuff. I'll have to say I got lucky and happened upon a killer sale on the C.A.D.s at B&H Photo/Video for New Years 2015...$111 Each for the M179 and $299 Each for the E100s, so I grabbed 3 of the former and 2 of the latter! ...figured that I could always sell them at not too much of a loss if either didn't pan out. But, like you, I was pleasantly surprised, and these have all been well used over the years for my initial intended applications as well as on all types of sources with good to great results. The M179 are great on all types of hand drums as well...tablas, congas, bongos, djembe, pandeiro, etc. Like any mic, it's all about how you use it combined with the source to achieve the sound you are seeking. Since then, and also like you, I've acquired a plethora of other great mics, but am a true fan of good quality ribbons for all types of sources, including my drums, percussion, and saxes. I've got several of the AEA, Mesanovic, Beyerdynamic, and Samar Audio Designs ribbons and love them all. Other than the ribbons, I'll say that the AT5045 pair gets A LOT of use on all types of sources as well. But I really loved your quick & dirty "Dominos" song, LOL, and especially on the Acoustic Guitar parts I think the M179 did a very respectable job there, as well as with your dialog/spoken word & vocals. And while they're not exactly anything special or inspiring to look at or sing into, the M179 are built well and as you noted have minimal handling noise for a mic at this price. And IME, decent, versatile and especially Multi-Pattern mics at this price are few & far between. I know I've certainly got my "money's worth" out of my CADs! Cheers

This is such a fun game for those of us that have the good ol flavor of ~microphone autism~ 1. AKG C414XLS for the versatility 2. Beyerdynamic M180 is a fave to use two on drum overheads due to the hypercardioid pattern in my untreated space. Also love pairing one with a condenser on acoustic guitars 3. Telefunken M80 because I love how it captures my snare 4. Electro-Voice 635A. Sounds lovely on classical guitar paired with a condenser, and also wonderful as a drum kit knee mic blasted with saturation, with its omnidirectional pattern 5. Electro-Voice RE-20. Use it on kick and sometimes for singing! Really want to get the SM7B because I have a similar voice to yours and it's so sibilant on the RE-20, as much as I love that mic. I don't need it, but I sure do want it. Thanks for the geeky prompt!

Your quality content does not matter if you bombard us with more interaction reminders. To me, interaction reminders degrade your content. It is so easy to forget about the M179. It has been around for years, and CAD has a tendency to fly below the radar. Keep in mind CAD has been around since the 1930s. Maybe if they charged what the mics are worth they would improve their image, but I certainly hope they continue to create good mics at exceptional prices. By the way, the current iteration of the 100 series - the 100sX - sounds quite nice as well. The first Equitek E100 hit the market in 1992, and since then, they have had the E100-2 (2003), the E-100S (2007), and the latest release, the E100Sx in 2022. I think it certainly deserves more recognition and love. And use.

Specifically some more aggressive rap vocals: Audio-Technica AT4040 Slate Digital ML-1 Sony C-80 Neumann TLM 102 Or should I stick to the basic ones like Shure SM7B and Rode NT1A?
