  • A simple Tek to make a manure based substrate.
    You don't have to use nearly the manure I used. I'm still playing with different amounts to see if it effects the outcome. If you change the manure level just watch your moisture level.

    I like the idea of using oven bags as opposed to using cotton pillowcases

      @@OzkAltBldgCo-bv8tt I just have never done it with a pillow case. I have heard of it. I feel like you could never keep your moisture levels right. I guess you would have to squeeze it to field capacity. I think oven bags or any pp5 bag is the better option.

      @@HappiHyphae yeah it's messy stinky.
      I've had decent success with corn and coffee grounds but this year I'm looking to take the two fastest runners out of some different testing I've seen both sorghum and corn and combine their forces.

      @@OzkAltBldgCo-bv8tt you can also use the same substrate as for cubes verm,coir add manure but sterilize instead if pastureize. I did side by side test and they were about the same. This tek did slightly better and had more flushes. So this is what I use.

    Later this year i might try my first run with pans and I like the straightforwardness of this video.

      @@mitchhutto2953 This is exactly what I do. None of these measurements have to be exact. Like sometimes I use less the manure. It doesn't seem to matter. You just have to watch your moisture levels. Always aim for field capacity before loading into the oven bag. Also I been leaving the straw a little longer like 3 or 4 inches. It helps the mycelium be able to breathe better.

      For cubes I feel like there's not enough benefit using a nutritious substrate, grain gives the mycelium plenty of energy

      @@jhash2625 I agree! I did a side by side test 10 years ago and the manure sub did no better for cubes then not using it.

    Thanks for another video. I finely tried a side by side with a straw poo vermiculite substrate and a CVG substrate with a very small amount of hydroponic grow solution to provide the extra nutrition. So far the pooless tub is out performing the poo/straw mix. I was quite surprised. I’ll have to see how it develops.

      @@texaspowerman I've done that also. But it was before they were doing it with hydroponic solution. I did it with manure,coir and vermiculite and sterilized it. The side by side test for me was very very close. But this tek here had more flushes. That's why I chose to make this video first. But I'll make a new one showing the other method soon. Straw is more close to what happens in nature so that is also why I go with this method. Both work about the same in my opinion.

    @happi You could skip poking the 2 holes and covering them with micropore tape because of the hole created by the temp probe.

      Your very correct good call out! I'm used to using that same method when I used to sterilize my cube sub. Which I no longer do. But in that case. You don't use the probe. But your correct! Thank you for that.

    Very nice. I'm gonna add some vermiculite next time :) I think I might try sterilizing instead of just boiling/pasteurizing too. I just tossed my shoebox of Bunnell...had some green monster. Thanks.

      Thanks Ed! My first grow I did both methods. The one i show here. Also one with manure, coir and verm (sterilized). So I kinda had a side by side test going on. Pastuized straw substrate (in this video) and sterilized coir,verm and manure. Both methods did equally well. At the very end (6weeks) I had 3 of each left. They fruited for a long time. Pans are alot of fun. Good luck with everything man!

So if you go to any of those you can find the results. Also I would like to tell everyone none pans are really forgiving when it comes to the substrate. They just basically love to grow on straw. So none of these measurements have to be exact. I need leaving my straw about 4 to 6 inches and using half as much manure compost and you will want to always try to bring your water content to feild capacity.     You said you sterilized manuer substrate? Does that atill work. I thought we wanted pasteurization?

      @@Bentwambus this tek here is pastureization. This is so you keep the beneficial bacteria. But you can also do it with coir,verm and manure and sterilize it. That will work also. Some are replacing the manure with some hydroponic liquid nutrients also and having success. I've done side by side tests with this tek and doing it with coir,vermiculite and manure. This tek here with the straw stayed clean the longest with the most flushes.

    So if the only straw I can find is already chopped, would it fill 1/4 of a 5 gal bucket instead of 3/4? Or should I just also do 3 quart jars full?

      @@TheWowWowWest none of these measurements have to be exact. These days I use half the manure. The thing is when your messing with the mix you have to always watch your moisture content. You want your final mix to be at field capacity before you pastureize.

    Out of curiosity what size tray/tub are you running and how many can you fill with this recipe?

      Usually can do two of the rectangle 12in x 9in cake pan trays with what ive shown. But sometimes that depends on how you chop your straw. You can obviously also alter the mix. With pans it doesn't have to be exact. Expecially with the manure. They really are just grass lovers. Doing what they do best decomposing.

      I just found a local farmer and they let me get as much as I want. Then I just take a bonsai sifter and sift the rocks out. But you can buy it from websites also.

      Thats the thing. Nothing needs to be 100% prsis , 3 quarts vermiculite ,3 quarts water, 3 quarts manure ( the manure can be as low as 10% of the mix but you would need to pay attention to your moisture content also. Some are using no manure.) If you have more questions reach out!

      @@PPP-on3vl I can make some more tomorrow and weigh it on a food scale. But you can't mess it up. I just fill the 5 gallon bucket 3/4 the way. I dont push down on it really. And then just chop it up. But I was thinking when I made the video that maybe I should weigh it for people... I'll get a weight for ya.

      All of what? A small pie pan of pans doesn't produce much. I only make the medicine as I need it. Anything extra gets donated to the local feed a fish foundation. 🐟
