    The Soccer Saturday panel discussed who Gareth Southgate should pick for England's first game at Euro 2024.
    England laboured to an uninspiring 2-0 win over Malta at Wembley on Friday, with only a late Harry Kane goal adding gloss to an otherwise poor performance.
    Gareth Southgate's side had been hit by a series of injuries in the build-up to the European Championship Qualifier dead-rubber but this was a terrible display from a team with ambitions of winning the tournament in Germany next summer.
    Qualification may have already been assured and top spot in Group C was sealed but this performance won't have impressed anyone questioning this team's credentials of going all the way at the Euros.

      He's not as good as KDB creatively. He's better at certain things sure. Specifically, whipping a cross in from out wide, set pieces and pings. But creatively, as in creating chances for teammates De Bruyne is a cut above everyone. Just the combination of his vision and execution of passes, plus his burst of acceleration and touch. Trent's technical ability is so high but he's not on par with De Bruyne creatively. De Bruyne's also just a more complete player. If you played him deeper next to a player like Rodri or Rice he'd be more defensively solid than Trent imo. Obviously we don't get to see him there because he's so good as a 10. But there's no position in the midfield where Trent could do a job as good as De Bruyne. That's not a slight on Trent though. De Bruyne's just that good.

    • @conordelaney76
      @conordelaney76 Před 3 měsíci

      @Anon97123 He plays in a different position, Trent's a full back (who can play in midfield), so naturally not as good in midfield (similarly KDB isn't as good at full back). Perhaps he's not quite as good as KDB, but his assist contribution, relative to the fact he plays as a right back, is nearly as good as De Bruyne. As you pointed out, Trent's creativity come in a different form (deep playmaking, right wing deliveries). I think my overall point stands.

    • @Anon97123
      @Anon97123 Před 3 měsíci

      @@conordelaney76 sure. I like him too. I just don't think he's as creative as De Bruyne. It's like me saying I don't think Dani Alves was as creative as Messi for Barca. Dani Alves was about as creative as it gets for a fullback. Insane assist numbers aswell and also got a little stick defensively like Trent. But some players are just different. There's a cap to how creative you can be from fullback. Just like there's a cap to how good of a goalscorer you can be from defence. Ramos scored a ridiculous number of goals from CB. But I wouldn't say he was as good of a goalscorer than Ronaldo just because he's the best goalscorer from his position.
      Trent's technical ability is very high and he's very creative. But he's not as creative as De Bruyne because De Bruyne gets more assists and creates more chances. That's what being creative means. How many goals/potential goals are you creating for the team. Yes. A midfielder is more creative than a fullback. The most creative midfielder is more creative than the most creative fullback. Trent's now made the move to midfield and De Bruyne is still a more creative midfielder than him.

    The most arrogant take from Sherwood to say England are by far the best squad. Acting like this team is Brazil 82 or Spain 2012. Like chill, some really great players but there is no class CBs only stones and even then beyond him not really any great CBs. CMs and DMs are very light beyond Rice and Bellingham, no real world class players there. No deep lying Playmaker in the mould of a Thiago/Kroos in the team The only area where England are blessed is attack and right back. All other positions are not world class the way the they are making the team sound.
    France and Portugal have a more balanced squad of really great players across the board. Both these squads have great Midfielders (Tchouameni Camavinga Griezemann Bruno Bernardo Neves Palhinha) England only have Bellingham and Rice, that ain't enough. CBs as well England are not really blessed with any current class elite level CB, again only Stones. Portugal and France between them have (Lucas Hernandez Saliba Upamecano Kounde Dias Inàcio Danilo Antonio Silva) The only position England is better than Portugal and France is Striker (Kane) and Fullback (Walker James Trippier TAA)
    All other positions are arguable.

    Grealish starting? In what world, he's behind Foden, Rashford, Sterling, Bowen, heck even Palmer currently. He offers nothing goal contribution wise. His ball retention and work rate, thats about it.
    The only thing the Malta game should of convinced you of was that Trent doesn't work in midfield, every time he had the ball, he was dispossessed, every time he shot on goal, he booted it half way to Germany, absolutely no work rate. A few good long passes and everyone thinks "Trent is the answer in midfield". There's a reason he has to be moved to midfield, because he can't do his job at full back, now you want to add more defensive responsibility to him in midfield.

    Rice is key is Southgate wants to show he can get the most out of the England XI.
    Foden is our best left attacking winger (I know some would argue Sterling is) but can also play off the right wing. Unless he's an impact sub Grealish should start deeper out wide, or England won't produce their best football imo. And I wouldn't discount Rashford as a left forward, at least it's someone for Kane to link up with as we know he likes doing.
    If Chamberlain was in form he could partner Bellingham, but its a good option to have Maddison as a 10, how England interchange on the left is something that is make or break for Southgate. Luke Shaw could really thrive this Euros.

    People won't like it but it's what will work on the pitch. The one thing we need to learn from the golden generation is not just cramming the best names on the pitch at the same time. You play the guys that will work together best. I love Grealish as a player. But he likes the ball to feet. Pep uses him to slow down the game at City. Kane's too similar. Kane likes dropping in to recieve the ball and pick out passes. You want him to be flanked by runners who are direct, trying to get in behind. Goalscorers basically. Grealish may be a better player than Sterling. But Sterling's more suited to playing with Kane and more suited to playing tournament football where you want goalscorers on the pitch. Grealish is also the best type of sub to have. Grealish has played his best football for England coming off the bench and making all the fans outraged that he isn't starting. Whilst Sterling has also got hate for starting before and then come up with the goals like in the Euros. He's also upped his game this season. He takes risks with his take ons and passes so his ball retention isn't as high as someone like Grealish. That stuff gets clipped and gets him hate but the fact is he's direct and scores goals. I really think he's our best option off the left.
    Think Foden's best position is in that attacking midfield role. He's been immense there for City since De Bruyne got injured. Maddison was also class there at the start of the season but he's been injured, meanwhile Foden has played. I also think Foden's one of our most naturally gifted players and is more likely to come up with something special when we need him to. Maddison offers more defensively and is better off set pieces though so I'm not fussed if Southgate goes with him. Our depth at AM is so good.
    Bellingham is obviously best as an AM but he's also a really good box to box. Was our best player in the World Cup next to Rice. It's a choice between that or playing Bellingham in the 10, shifting Foden to LW and playing someone like Mainoo next to Rice. I just think the team would function better with Bellingham next to Rice, Foden or Maddison in the 10 and Sterling LW. My opinion. The people acting like Bellingham can't play next to Rice as if we didn't see it at the World Cup or for Dortmund don't know what they're talking about.
    Lastly, I wouldn't be opposed to Palmer coming in for Saka. Saka's been better for longer so he's got the RW locked down for now. But people don't realise just how good Palmer is. I honestly think he's been as good as Foden this season. He's more creative than Saka, he's added goals to his game and he's an excellent penalty taker, which is important in international tournaments.
    Trent next to Rice is an option but it just doesn't give me the confidence Rice-Bellingham does. Trent can run a game but we may not need that with players like Rice, Bellingham, Foden, Palmer, Kane etc. And I just think in a tough game against France, Trent could get bypassed in the midfield. It's a risk and I don't think we need to take it, given everyone we have at our disposal. Defensive solidity is the number 1 priority in international tournaments. Trent's a phenomenal player though. He's 100% on the plane and if Southgate goes with him in midfield I'm not complaining.

    I’m Villa fan and I’m one who has got a lot of time for grealish but he is walking a tight rope for me I don’t think he’s getting the best out of his talent because he is not looking after himself too much drinking means he can’t trust his body to be a bit more unpredictable on the pitch.
    Also I believe when it comes to attacking talent for England saka, foden, Bellingham and Kane are the only true world class players the rest are good footballers also a special mention for sterling who has been the best player in previous tournaments but he there is a difference don’t believe the overhyped narrative.

    Don't know about lately but in the world cup it seemed when Foden and Kane were somewhat close, they seemed to always do something clever and then within about 10 seconds the ball was in the back of the net. I'm unable to see why England has Maguire in their lineup and maybe in their team - he is extremely clumsy, doesn't mark his man well and seems poor with the ball - I have noticed that defenders that are known for pushing/stepping into the tackle and are good with the head seem to get way more credit than they deserve. We had a guy like that on our team who was way more coordinated than Maguire and he played center half and a new coach played him at center back and everyone but me thought he was great there but he was getting accolades for yelling, stepping into tackles and heading the ball. I noticed however that his actual defending was not good. We went into an FA cup equivalent and also went up a league and he caused us a goal in 5 straight games cuz he just kept getting burned while stepping into tackles and attackers making him look terrible. He eventually was moved back into the half and was a good player again. If Maguire was on my team ( I wouldn't pick him ), I would save him and play him if there was 20 minutes down and we had pressure so he could go up for headers ... I'm not an expert on English defenders but I question whether he is good enough for the P league but can't seriously believe there is no one better for England there in mid D ...
    Love Grealish but he seems overrated a bit and I wonder if that is just because he has the likeability factor. We had a guy like Grealish on our team and he was known by some as 'the best player that has never done anything' since he never scored or got assists but everyone agreed he was great lol ...
    Coach doesn't seem to be 'clever' - I used to say that England's problem was a lack of clever players (this was after they finally realized they shouldn't punt the ball down the wing to the opposing defender on every possession) - now England has a great mix of players, some talent, some cleverness, some grit, some speed, some athleticism, some finishing touch and IMHO if they had a better coach they would have won Euros last time ...

      The thing about maguire is we know he CAN be phenominal, because he was - 3 years ago, the most expensive defender in EPL history.
      But mentally the guy has utterly imploded, every mistake he makes just crushes his mentality further and leaving him more vulnurable to another mistake. My theory is southgate keeps playing him n the hopes he will get that one moment, a goalline clearence, a winning save, or a vital header, and his mentality will begin to recover.
      The problem with a player like maguire is we have seen what he CAN do... but he just isn't doing it anymore, so do we leave him out for a more consistant defender like Dunk for example? Or do we stick with it and try to get him back to what he was? It's a rough call, but i think if he was going to improve, he would have done so. Southgate says he is on for 'experiance' but what can he do that walker, stones or shaw can't?

    Play TAA at right midfield with Walker at RB and Trippier at LB. Saka at RW, Jude as the 10 and Kane obviously upfront. It’s between Foden and Grielish for LW and the better footballer is Foden. But there are two problems with him: he’s more RW than LW and he drifts into the central spaces that belong to Bellingham (undoubtedly England’s best baller). So you might have to go with the ‘inferior’ option of Grielish in the starting XI.
    But really it’s squad game. No need to settle on a cast in stone XI and stick with that all tournament. Having the likes of Foden, Maddison, Saka, Grielish, TAA, Stones, Shaw, Trippier, Rice, Henderson, Walker etc all in rotation basically makes England the strongest squad of Euro 2024. It’s really up to Southgate to harness all that rich talent
