The HUGE Problem England Need To Solve Before The Euros

  • As they prepare for this summer's European Championships, England suffered a rare defeat at the hands of Brazil. However, despite not creating many chances, and leaving themselves uncharacteristically open at the back, Gareth Southgate's system hints that a very attacking approach could be used at the Euros. Provided they can fix one glaring flaw in the middle of the park...

    The Bellingham thing isn’t an issue. Just because he has good stats it doesn’t mean you destroy team balance to accommodate him. Kane saka and foden will score enough goals. Put Bellingham in the 8 and move on

    • @bens4602
      @bens4602 Před měsícem +20

      Agreed. He can be more conservative for England and enjoy Real Madrid more. Gallagher’s the best for closing down space and we need to optimise the conditions for him to do this. Just because Bellingham gets loads of goals doesn’t negate this (besides he scored and assisted plenty from a #8 position).

      Finally someone with some common sense. After that match against Brazil I don’t want to see Jude in cam. He can push forward if a defender tucks in to midfield but he can’t start there over foden.. foden is sooo much more creative. All did was get fouled and we don’t care about that. He needed to create for Watkins who actually played well but he didn’t do that enough

      Some of Bellingham's best England moments have been winning the ball deep and ghosting past a couple of players, turning the opposition and giving it to the forwards on the front foot. He is so good running with the ball that you would take that out of his game by playing him to high up the pitch.

    • @liamsir6246

    • @ashleygoggs5679

      I both agree and disagree. England has a lot of generational talent. But ideally we want to work out a system that gets the most out of bellingham. He is an absolute unit with stats to back that up. Agreeably he is very versatil aswell. But Bellingham has an uncanny ability to be in places defenders dont expect and thats just one of the reasons why we should concider a format that works around bellingham. I think the Problem here though is southgate really dosnt want to commit all the way to forming a team around him which means his making some stupid mistakes by playing older veteran players who may not suit this style of play. For example Harry Maguire, hes not the fastest player out there so in a high attacking comp hes not quick enough to run back and get to where he is needed. I think overall the game against brazil would have been different if we didnt loose Walker as his pace is fantastic. Lets just hope SG figures out the best style of play before the euros and we can stop being stricken with injuries as im really getting nervous now with so many key players not able to play.

  • @ProfessionalBob
    @ProfessionalBob Před měsícem +90

    Couldn't it be that the reason why Bellingham's goal-scoring stats are so high is because Real Madrid haven't really been playing with an outright striker? How many of those scoring opportunities is he going to get when the position he's playing is instead more about feeding balls into Kane/Watkins?
    And it's not like England are so lacking in goalscoring forwards right now that they would need to rely on Bellingham. I personally think putting him at 8 in a role more similar to how he played at Dortmund would work. You can still make use of his goal scoring abilities somewhat by letting him make late runs into the box.

      With an embarrassment of riches to build a frankly frightening high pressing team, it's about the profiles and not the price tags. Declan rice rotates the ball in midfield, he's not indispensably talented. He's there for his recovery speed, else you'd start TAA in midfield. If you wanted to build a high pressing side, you could also consider Wan-Bissaka alongside Stones, and he'd help your team win. There's depth at basically every position but LB if you look, and then you just play RBs there anyhoo (hello TAA) and modify. Thanks to the user who defended me.
      Thankfully, pressing outcomes at CB doesn't win games: goals do. So we won't see Wan-Bissaka 1v1 slicing down strikers on the backpedal. But making a pressing squad, with Mags at the back, that will leak goals. And goals win games.

      As an Arsenal fan, this is the first thing I noticed at the start of this season. Rice has never played as a number 6 in a progressive team that keeps the ball and plays on the front foot at a high level. I still think he is young enough and has the skillset to learn this role, but it is going to take at least a season or more under Arteta. A possible solution could be utilising John Stones as a centre back that steps into midfield to form a double pivot with Rice, like he does with Rodri at City. If you're playing Bellingham as a 8, that will enable him to move forward and take a high position when England have the ball.

    The blueprint is there to basically replicate what Arteta is doing at Arsenal and Pep is doing at City (2-3-5 attacking shape) as many of the important players are also English and know how that shape works. Foden can be the right 8 a la Odegaard, Saka right wing. Jude as left 8 getting forward as Havertz has been (England should dominate possession against most teams so he will most often be an acting 10 in and around the box,) Kane up top, Rashford left wing (if he can work hard) or Gordon. Normal back 4 with Walker and Stones doing what they normally do at City. Mainoo can come in for Foden and push Rice to left 8 (and Jude to right 8) if ball progression is more important as Rice isn't the best receiving under pressure. Any country would love to have the guts of two of the best club teams in England (maybe Europe) and the team should do well. Southgate is the problem if they don't reach deep in the competition

However when the moment for creating chances appeared they were totally fluffed. Quite a few of those were Chillwell, like crosses that just totally failed, unfortunately not good enough at this high level of football. If you want to beat Brazil, your crosses have to make it over the first defender.
    All in all it was a fairly even match with a new system and new players. Friendly is the perfect place to test ideas, kind of doesn't matter if you win or not, you need to put your new players and tactics in the pressure cooker to see what works.

    Press have spent over a week hammering Ben White for turning England down rather than Southgate for creating an environment where one of the best, most versatile and tactically astute defenders in England couldn’t get a game.
    Previous to that it was pitting Foden against Saka to see who was “really world class” - well Foden did fuck all but looks a million dollars for city and has carried them in a few games.
    It’s the manager not the players - Gallagher might be a ball winning machine but he’s nowhere near as good on the ball. But Southgate is obsessed with two BWM protecting his back four. Instead of seeing if he can play that press and push a defender next to Rice. Stones does it for City, White does it for Arsenal, TAA does it for Liverpool.

    Great analysis. I actually think Gallagher can play the deeper role and be very effective, but I think we definitely need Walker fit, and ideally a quicker CB alongside Stones in the event of the press being beaten. I'm sure Maguire will be relied upon but I think Guehi would be a far better option.
    One thing you didn't mention was that, in this aggressive counter-pressing system, of course the first objective is to win back the ball. The next best thing is to force the opposition to play backwards. But then after that, the next best thing is to simply foul them to stop the break. In the first example you showed, Gallagher just got a step or two to the wrong side of Paqueta, and his first touch meant Gallagher couldn't get close enough to foul him. For the goal, Foden should just go into the back of the Brazil player and give away the FK, rather than get round him and try to get back into position. I believe the likes of Pochettino, Pep and other press masters like Klopp would be coaching them to do exactly that.

    Need to redo the back line to allow them to press like this, get good 1v1 defenders on, you have enough attacking in the front 3 and playing Bellingham + a Maddison or foden centrally. Then have colwill/ Jarrad branthwaite/ stones / Walker (konsa imo is great at this aswell as rb or rcb with stones lcb) at the back, where stones goes up to a double pivot with rice. You’d have so much threat and have so many amazing attacking players up front. Think because of Southgate’s favourites he can’t see the wood for the trees. Has a good idea about a high press, unable to see what personal to pick to make it work.

    What we lacked against Brazil was a ball winner, since Kalvin Phillips injury we havent had a player who can do this job so its been left to Declan Rice but hes better playing more as an 8 like he does for Arsenal, Kobe Mainoo could do that job though as he showed against Belgium

    Midfield is not a problem and once Kane & Saka are back the attack is sorted becaue Bowen and Toney have shown they are able deputies that won't require England to adapt to a different style. Bellingham was a 6 or an 8 @ Dortmund so if Rice was injured Bellingham could and i think, would play there. Southgate i think wants to start with Trent & Rice with Bellingham further forward with Mainoo as a sub for any of them but most likely Trent. Sorted.
    Stones is a worry, but if he was not fit then Maguire could be paired with a pacy CB and it could be fine - particularly if Maguire plays as RCB so he has his CB partner and Walker either side of him. Gomez returning to the squad is heartening for me - i have a feeling that Southgate saw Gomez & Stones as his ideal partnership going forward in 2020 but Gomez has not been able to hold a place down in the Liverpool team. Gomez playing regularly, even if often @ FB, means he's now match sharp enough to start for England. Konsa also looked very comfortable and i think him coming on ahead of Branthwaite says that Gareth wants to take him.

    Something that isn’t really mentioned in the video I think is that the reason the high press / counter press football works for certain teams (peak Liverpool, Arsenal, etc.) is because they have defenders they can rely upon if, as you point out, Paqueta pulls a brilliant turn.
    No disrespect to Maguire, Chillwell, Dunk, etc. but for various reasons (speed, injury, decisiveness) these are not defenders you can rely on 1 on 1 if the system breaks down for a moment. Van dijk famously not being dribbled past for a stupid amount of time, Gabriel physically dominating forwards the second they get the ball, Saliba covering in behind, Robertson covering back like a lunatic - these are the kinds of players that make these systems work by removing the threat of those kind of moments.
    If you don’t have those players you can’t play that system because those infrequent chances will happen, and those teams will score. In peak Liverpool those chances would still happen, but the chance of that amounting to anything was minimal.
    If we want to play that way we need Stones and Walker playing, AT LEAST, probably Luke Shaw too. And we also have to consistently score 2+ goals every game which we rarely look capable of.

    Foden I find frustrating. I have never seen a more mercurially talented player that seems to have such a lack of understanding for tempo and footballing. He is incredibly gifted, he exerts a hell of a lot of energy, and works hard for the team, but ultimately, I actually think he's destined a super sub. He is positionless which people see as "able to play anywhere", but subsequently, able to play nowhere as effectively as someone else. There is no doubting his ability, I doubt taking up a position for an aimless player who pep uses as a running dog. Bellingham and Maddison are better 10's (and give you something different from one another), Saka and Bowen are better on the right, Gordon is better on the left (albeit I would consider him here due to the lack of actual footballing ability in this position). I would like to see him played regularly at 8, but Gallagher and Jones do that better than Foden. He's the player for me that fits perfectly into the "HOW CAN YOU LEAVE THIS PLAYER OUT?!" category, but honestly, I would just bring him on as fresh legs when the game opens up a bit and he can absolutely dog people. I know it's an unpopular opinion. He IS the messiah after all.

    1: Maguire is dangerously exposed when playing in a high line. If we want to play a high line, we need to be using the likes of Tomori/Guehi/Stones/Colwill/Branthwaite. Use our quick centre backs and trust them.
    2: Just because Bellingham has scored all those goals for Madrid doesn’t mean that will translate to a different team or national team. Ancelotti has designed a system this year to account for the loss of Benzema and Bellingham has adapted to it and made it work by almost playing as both the attacking midfielder and striker with two mobile and tricky wide players acting as strikers but often will either drift wide or drop deep in the channels to receive the ball. We have strikers so Bellingham doesn’t find the same positions and space for England.
    3: Southgate feels like he’s trying to shoe horn players in based on popularity and stats alongside players he trusts. He doesn’t seem to have a style of play. We need to pick a style and pick the players who best suit that style! Possession based system - Rice, Foden, Maddison in midfield with either Kane or Bellingham further forward. Two quick players out wide in Saka, Rashford, Gordon etc. If you want to gegenpress, you want a striker like Watkins, a defensive midfielder like Kalvin Phillips, a ball winner like Gallagher and one quick wide player like Rashford and a ball carrier/creator like Foden or Grealish.

I understand the stats are world class but he’s world class in many positions and we have to use him where we need him the most, especially when you have players such as Maddison and Foden who can play the 10. Madrid have half a dozen world class midfielders and little in the number 9 role which almost forced their hand with Judes position. Yes it came off dramatically but I can guarantee 1. They wouldnt be playing Jude in the 10. If they had Kane and 2. They wont be playing him there when Mbappe is there next year. Our biggest mistake would be isolating Jude because hes too far up the pitch. He needs to be allowed to effect the game in every way he possibly can and I believe that its from deeper.
