Why England's EURO 96 Team Was So Far Ahead Of Its Time

  • Terry Venables' England side almost went all the way at Euro 96. But rather than doing it with a classically English 4-4-2, it was a team of such stunning flexibility and positional intelligence, football in this country wouldn't see the like again for almost two decades.
    This is how Venables took Shearer, Sheringham, Gazza, McManaman, Southgate, and the rest, and briefly turned them into one of the most interesting sides in world football.

    Venables was way ahead of his time. Although Cruyff gets all the plaudits at Barca, it was Terry who started it all.

    • @bradnodes
      @bradnodes Před 5 měsíci +8

      Not sure who said it but it was a former Barcelona player who said something like Cruyff's team wouldn't have happened without the foundations Venables put down

      @@T.E.S.S. pretty sure the Barcelona player who said that played under both Venables and Cruyff. I wasn't personally saying Venables was a more influential manager at Barcelona particularly given how popular Cruyff was at the club, however, someone who played under both managers making the comment that Cruyff built-upon/improved the team based on what Venables had put in place doesn't seem that absurd if the guy experienced playing for Barca pre and post Venables and Cruyff. I think that was in the period where Barca hadn't won much or at least weren't especially successful in comparison to Real Madrid.

      It's pretty common knowledge that Venables introduced pressing to Barca and he was using players from the academy before it got its branding name La Masia. Venables is also credited for giving Barca an identity again after being the wilderness for so long in Spanish football.

    Steve McManaman was in the Euro team of the tournament and struggled to get in the team under Hoddle… he played for one of the best teams in Europe 2 years after that World Cup. So he couldn’t get in the 11 for hoddle but was good enough for Euro 96 team of the tournament and scored in a CL final in 00
    How does that make sense
    Well done Glenn

      Hoddle was a bit cuckoo in the head. Banished Ray Parlour in the squad because he poked fun at the team's "faith healer."

    This is Venables masterpiece and homage to Dutch football. He studied the Ajax and Netherlands team of the 70's. Iirc he also went over to Netherlands back the late 60's early 70's to learn. So he was very familiar with the total football concepts. Then if you fast forward to the mid 90's you had LVG Ajax team who were playing the 343 diamond when attacking with Rijkaard pushing up from the CB role to the DM which is the role that Southgate did when England played 352/3511 in game. Also its the role Pep did under Cruyff playing along side Koeman. Also have to mention why this is Venables masterpiece that 6-7 months prior Netherlands coached by Hiddink did the exact same thing to Ireland at Anfield in the playoff match. The line up that day was 10 current and former Ajax players and Glenn Helder and off the performance and Ajax being current CL holders they were favourites going into the Euros.
    I do recommend watching the Netherlands vs Ireland game from Dec 95.

    That was excellent, really enjoyed the analysis. What was frustrating at the time, was just how brilliant they were against Netherlands but were unable to reproduce that performance against Spain and Germany.

    Two things: firstly, we were really good at times in World Cup 1998. I would go as far as saying the Argentina game in 98, pre-sending off, was better than anything they did in the Euros. We looked like a proper world-beating team.
    Secondly, later in the tournament, they played a bit of 3-5-2. Neville was playing on the right side of central defence and was overlapping the wingback. Wilder might have systemised overlapping centre backs but Venables was doing it for England in Euro 96.

    Any differences between the men's team during Euro 96 and the women's team that won the Euro 2022, also at home soil? I think not, because when you explained the women's one just before the Women's World Cup in a separate videos for this channel, there's a complete similarities between them when it comes to the style of play. However, the women's team is still far better than the men's one, mainly due to the fact they are currently being managed by the same Dutch manager that had a success with its native country back in 2017-2020. The women's team during the 2022 tournament had scored a whopping 22 goals (they demolished both Norway 8-0 and Sweden 4-0; both with the strongest side), only conceded 2, and had some good goals on each games.
    RIP Terry Venables.
