    When installing a tile shower, whether it be ceramic, marble travertine or any other tile product, a mud base will be required. Mud also known as deck mud, is a mixture of sand and Portland cement mixed to a ratio that will create a solid foundation for the tile which will be installed on it. The deck mud is mixed with water to a dump consistence which will allow the deck mud to hold its shape when pressed into a ball. The mud must be pitcher towards the drain so that a slope of at least ¼" per foot is achieved. The ratio of sand and Portland cement is usually 4:1 or 5:1. I usually use "Quikrete" sand topping mix, which as far as I know, has a ratio which is a little richer than needed, but is suitable for a shower pan. The method I employ to install my mud in shower pan, is to create a level and flat perimeter around the base of the shower walls which is at the correct height in relation to the drain, and then fill the middle part of the shower pan screeding down to the drain with the proper pitch. The mud is shaped with a wooden trowel, steel trowel, level and other pieces of straight wood lengths cut to the required lengths. In this video I demonstrate the technique I use to install a shower mud pan base. There are other methods that can be used, but this is the way I have installed hundreds of shower bases. How to grout a ceramic tile floor, step by step, this video is intended to be a guideline on how to grout a ceramic tile floor. This is how I do it and what I have found to be the simplest and quickest way to grout You will need a rubber float, a couple of buckets, a margin trowel for mixing your grout, and some rubber gloves. Mix your grout according to the direction of the grout you are using. Once the grout is ready, I find the best way to grout a tile floor is to spread the grout with the rubber float while holing it at a very low angle to the floor and pushing the grout into the lines while applying a good amount of pressure. Once you have filled the lines go over the same area with the float at a very high angle in order to remove all the excess grout and leave the grout lines filled with the proper amount of grout. Let stand for a period of time, then with a grout sponge and a bucket of clean cold water, work the grout lines with the sponge. The sponge should have as little water as possible not dripping or soaked. At this point the goal is to shape the grout lines not clean the tile. Once this is accomplished, the next step is to clean the tile. Again with a damp sponge and clean water, place the sponge on the tile, with even pressure pull the sponge in one direction only, lift the sponge flip to the other side repeat, rinse and repeat until the grouted section is clean. Once the whole floor is grouted and cleaned in this fashion, wait until the floor dries to a haze, and rinse again in the same manner.
    I hope anyone that watches this finds it helpful.

    It is so awesome that people like you take the time to make videos like this.
    Before the internet I used to go to the library and take out a stack of books to research things I'd never done before. What a hassle that could be. There were limits on how many books you could take out at a time, and typically many of the books you were looking for were already being borrowed by someone else. Also many libraries aren't very well stocked and lots of books were ancient, when things were done totally different
    Video is SO much better, and you can find just about anything you need to learn online.
    Thanks so much!

      so thin setting the niche to the room next door wasn't cutting a coroner? would pay anything to see the guy that remodels and all of a sudden whoops now i need to fix a whole wall of tile since it will never be properly water proof if you just patch it. also it will be 5 years from now when they don't make that tile anymore. making sure that the window hing will trap water forever - ... as much as I like this Chanel sometimes the editor actor or whom ever directs these needs to lower their ego and understand that he is working within a building that needs different skills. carpentry-take some pride in tiling take some pride in proper framing, engineering flip the window hinge to be from the top and not calk it and forget it making a unique tile that will 100% will not match the new window. If you look at the long term this is a hack job if you look at 10-15 years its awesome. welcome to the 21st century where the western world consumes itself because it feels like 15 years is a long time from now.

      @@josephv5346 huh? how is the window hingE going to trap water? he angled the tile in to the shower and probably sloped the underlayment as well as documented by his other videos. the niche location is also preferable because on one side you have the plumbing, and in the middle you have an exterior wall in which you should never put a niche so he is left with one option. if there is a hack that comes in and decides to mount a tv on the other side then that is his problem for being an idiot. this is not a hack job, and is actually far from it. if you have seen half of the showers installed in production housing these days then you would know what a hack job is. my house has a shower with tile directly on drywall and hasn't had any issues since the '80s when it was built. this system is more than belt-and-suspenders and should last beyond your 10 year estimate by a lot.

    I been union tile setter for 40 years this guy knows his shit, putting silicone caulk under the pan for water won't get under your pan, good job, only thing don't like putting water proofing on top of your mud bed that way moldy water constantly sets on your floor has no place to drain that's one of the reason for a dry mud back and weep holes in your drain caller for water to escape anyways good tile setter 👍

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  Před 6 lety

      I get it, "Waterin, Water out" but I think a sealed system is better, and doing that will convert it to a sealed system as long as you can get a good seal at the drain. However, because of the design of the drain ( Not a bonding flange) the liner has to be there just in case of a clogged drain and a backup. Another way to do it is the divot method, I just don't like the idea of having a painted on waterproofing membrane as my only defence against water. I have since decided to just do sealed shower systems like Schluter, or Wedi, or Hydro Ban board.

    Nice work!! a lot of work goes into these showers. I noticed you didn't put any blocking around bottom of shower, we usually use 2x8 blocking as per codes in Utah.

    Sal, good videos indeed, and they have made my shower installations just a bit better I believe, even though I've been doing this for 15 years & never had a leak. Questions --- 1) Would it be OK to install the felt underlayment on the wooden subfloor using type 1 mastic instead of staples? I'm concerned that the staples may be a leak point sometime in the future; of course, not in our lifetimes, but I'd like my pans to last as long as the house does. 2) Do you have to use wire lath in the preslope to reinforce it? Why couldn't you use thinset as you do on a concrete floor to bond it? Wouldn't the thinset bond to the felt as it does on floors when you use felt as a crack isolation underlayment? Couldn't you add fibers to the mud to reinforce it as well? I know #2 was 4 questions in 1, but they are all related to the same issue. Thanks in advance.

    wish you did work down here in South Houston... quick question, from the bare stud walls to the finished product, how long should this job take roughly ?

    true craftsmen back in the day and so are you.

    Hi Sal, when you waterproofed the mud, did you use the fabric in the joint between the base of the wall and the floor?

    beautiful shower! one thing I do is silicone caulk all around the edge of the floor tile to the wall to minimize water damage on the floor
