Das Château de Chillon (dt. Schloss Chillon) liegt auf einer Felseninsel am Ufer des Lac Léman (dt. Genfersee) zwischen den Waadtländer Orten Montreux (396 m ü. M.) und Villeneuve (375 m ü. M.). Das Wasserschloss eignete sich seit jeher als Zollstation, um den Handel vom See zu den historisch bedeutenden Alpenübergängen Simplonpass (2’009 m ü. M.) und Col du Grand St-Bernard (2’469 m ü. M.) kontrollieren zu können. Nach den Savoyern und den Bernern ging der Besitz von Chillon am Anfang des 19. Jh. schliesslich auf das Kanton Waadt über.
Das Schloss ist ein Wahrzeichen der Genferseeregion und der gesamten Romandie. Das für die Öffentlichkeit zugängliche Chillon ist das meistbesuchte historische Gebäude der Schweiz. Oberhalb des Schlosses schlängelt sich heute die von Lausanne (447 m ü. M.) kommende A9 durch.

The Château de Chillon (Chillon castle) is situated on a rocky island at the shore of Lake Geneva (French: Lac Léman, German: Genfersee) between the Vaud towns of Montreux (396 m above sea level) and Villeneuve (375 m above sea level). The moated castle has always been used as a customs station to control the trade from the lake to the historically important Alpine crossings Simplon Pass (2,009 m above sea level) and Col du Grand St-Bernard (2,469 m above sea level). Following the Savoyards and the Bernese, Chillon has belonged to the canton of Vaud since the beginning of the 19th century.
The castle is a landmark of the region around Lake Geneva and all of Romandy. Chillon is open for the public and is the most visited historic building in Switzerland. Today, the highway A9, coming from Lausanne (447 m above sea level), meanders above the castle.
