SWISSVIEW, TI Gotthardpass

Der Passo del San Gottardo (Gotthardpass, 2’106 m ü. M.) verbindet die Ortschaften Andermatt in der Talschaft Urseren (Kanton Uri) und Airolo in der Leventina (Kanton Tessin). Die kopfsteingepflasterte Tremola an der Südflanke des Gotthardpasses, die in Serpentinen von der Passhöhe nach Airolo führt ist das längste Baudenkmal der Schweiz.

Das Gotthardgebiet ist das Wasserschloss Europas. Viele kleinere und grössere Bergseen prägen die Landschaft. Am Gotthard entspringen die grossen Ströme Rhein, Rhone, Reuss und Ticino (Zufluss zum Po).

The Passo del San Gottardo (Gotthard Pass; 2,106 m above sea level) connects the localities of Andermatt in the Urseren valley (canton of Uri) and Airolo in the Leventina region (canton of Ticino). The cobblestone road of Tremola at the southern flank of the Gotthard Pass, leading in serpentines from the pass summit to Airolo, is considered the longest monument of Switzerland.
The Gotthard region is considered to be the moated castle of Europe. The landscape is characterized by many large and small mountain lakes. The major rivers Rhine, Rhone, Reuss, and Ticino (feeding river of the Po) rise at the Gotthard.
