What the Hell Is Wrong With The Row?!

  • We all have a few favorite brands even if we are not regular customers of them, right? We keep following what they’re up to, scrutinize new releases, dream of buying one of their products since we LOVE their styles and visions. Well, for me, that brand was The Row. I loved the brand’s image including its timeless designs, great quality products as well as its remarkable vision. I loved how the Olsen twins managed to found a successful and prestigious brand without using their influence and fame. Their idea and branding were that strong. Hell, I even made a video about it a few months ago, and said that it was the best fashion investment. I remember saying I would probably fill my closet with The Row clothing pieces if I could afford it.
Until very recently, my thoughts and feelings about this brand took a different turn, and today I want to explain why I’m not the biggest fan of this brand anymore...

I was under the impression that the ban from using phones was to avoid leaks. I mean, they always release the official photos anyways. What's the big deal? And in the screenshot it says "it looks like COS." Because COS borrows heavily from The Row. I don't think they're snobbish, honestly. I think they prefer the real life experience so going to the stores to feel the clothes and not using smartphones to take a closer look at the runway shows. It's also weird that you change your opinion quickly because of what others feel. It might mean The Row is not for you. Just because you like it then another person says it's boring and you quickly change means you have low conviction. Just enjoy the clothes if you like it no matter what another person tells you, it's a piece of fabric. As long as the quality doesn't decline and the suppliers and workers who make the clothes are treated well, it's ok for me. I mean, Loro Piana has been exposed for its shady tactics with their suppliers.

I’m older, in my 50s, and I just assumed they preferred no distractions at the show. Back in the day the shows were less about being seen and more about the critique and buying/merchandising for retailers. We’d see pics through articles that also had commentary on the collection. Many fashion influencers I find on insta are sharing pics of themselves or in groups and don’t talk much about the actual collection. I’m not a Row fan girl or anything like that but I don’t agree that they should start accessorizing their bags. It’s the opposite of their aesthetic and concept. Additional straps add hardware and the hardware on their bag is minimal. I love the quirky charms/tricks of LV and Prada but don’t think that’s the Row at all. Dior is also more flamboyant and girlie with an edge than the Row, which is more Gentlewoman.

I'm happy to see a brand stick to its standards on high quality, albeit pricey. If I didn't sew my own, but still knew how to evaluate quality, I might slowly build my wardrobe with key Row pieces. On the other side of the coin, if I had that kind of money to spend, I think I'd have my clothing custom made by a professional seamstress. The handbags -- I'm with many commenters. I hate them. Accessories are the one way we can express our mood and personality and individuality when wearing them with simple clothing designs. I find their handbags completely devoid of any creativity. Speaking for myself, I need more. Especially for the $$.

I know I could never afford The Row, so I feel I can say this…they have a spot in Haute Couture. That’s damn near as high as any fashion brand can go. Haute Couture is for a few. It’s a club you are allowed entry to. That’s not a lot and mainly aimed at … older, richer players. That’s their style.

I just don’t understand humanity in 2024. While walking my dogs, my husband and I saw a Fendi’s publicity in which they promote their leather school…meaning you pay them to teach you a skill, and then maybe they will hire you for “monetine”. Mind you we are in Toscany and leather goods are part of the history and not too long ago companies would hire you and teach you to be an “ artigiano”. Honestly you could get a good leather bag made in this region but now I wonder for how long it will be like that. It seems people just want a brand name so it maybe why companies are changing.

Isn’t the premise of The Row is clothing that are basic but high quality on a minimalist design… They’re not about setting a trend; they just want to supply extremely good quality clothing/accessories that are timeless. Can I afford The Row? No but I like that they are influencing other designers/manufacturers to step it up a notch when it comes to quality fabrics and construction. Things cost too much for an item to be poorly constructed, no matter what economical level a person is at.

Not only too elitist but also classist and sizeist. Other high end brands have managed to make quality clothing in sizes over a European 12 without clutching their pearls and fainting, or making snotty and insufferable comments (Looking at you Tom Ford and Karl Lagerfeld). That's kind of a three strikes and you're out checklist. Also too beige. OMG too beige.

Their bags are plain, but there are sometimes other products that are unique and cool, and that is why they get copied so much. I like the balance that the Row maintains between being cool and timeless. Constantly being edgy and cool is tiring in my opinion. And leads to more fast fashion.

I'm in favor of paying more for good basic items that are going to last but it has to make sense in terms of cost per wear. In the case of The Row, it just doesn't. If i want a well made durable T-shirt, I can buy it at Tommy Hilfiger or Hugo Boss for much less. Also I don't think that the proces at the row can be justified by the labor or amterials it took to make them. A basic cotton T-shirt, with no embroidery, lace etc.. it not that hard to make and shouldn't cost hundreds of dollars.

Btw the row doesn’t have an exceptional quality. I've had several items from them and all not of the highest quality. The bag wasn't equally matte in all places, and it's straight from a boutique. The leather on the sandals cracked on the sides in just a few months. All of these things you get for thousands of dollars.

Here is my point of view on their “no filming” rule. IF they were having a videographer set up to video the entire show and then showcase that on their website, I could get on board with this. Since no such thing was done, I think it’s a jerk move. In my opinion, if they don’t want me to see their product, I don’t want to buy it. Perhaps after a couple of seasons of stagnant and dropping sales they will learn their lesson. Seriously, how exclusive do they think they are? Can we all say “ego trip”?

  • @FilleDesSoucoupesVolantes

I disagree with the ideas presented in the video. The brand does not need to be edgy or anything you guys WANT it to be. It's a minimalist couture brand. It's zen and has clean lines. If you want frou-frou you go to Valentino, Versace, Chloe, Stella Mc Cartney, Miu Miu. Simple. That's what I do. I mix it up. There's no law that states you have to be loyal to one brand.

I’m the exact height of the average US women, but much thinner, the average size is now 16 (up from 14 a decade ago)! I don’t need larger-size inclusivity, but I very much believe in it.
