I started my mechanic career in 1953 in ford dealerships and worked on every one of these cars,and now at 80 years young I still buy and love fords.
Mr. Ken, I miss the 351/400 Modified and that 78 Thunderbird long nosed beauty that she was. Even helped put a Thunderbird body on a 4 wheel drive F-150 chassis it turned out very nice and my sister ran the wheels and life out of her Maverick. I bought a 2002 F-150 Super Crew 4x4 7 years ago my first Ford truck. Finally got tired of Chevy trucks. This F-150 pulls better than my 89 1ton Dually Chevy ever did. Love that 5.4 V-8 under the hood. Love my Ford. Although I had to put in a Jasper transmission 4 years ago at 220,731 miles, which the trans was weak when I bought the truck so no biggie. Finally put a starter on it first of this summer. I will never have GM in my drive way again. Ford is still leading the pack in a good automobile and pick up. I have been turning wrenches since before 1980 and still make my money that way, I'm 25 years behind you in age, but I'm catching up with you.
I am a chevy guy. No Found on Road dead or Fix and repair daily for me.. I really do like the 69 Boss 429 mustang though. I had a friend who had one in the 70's and that was a Beast. Also the Ford AC 427 Cobra with the body of total aluminum made in England was nice. Also I have a soft spot for the 351 powered Detomasa 1973 Pantera. Other than that, I am a Chevy Guy. I don't know about you sir, But I wish I could go back....
Ken Turner I'm 48 and drive a 1968 Ford F-100 pickup. 240 six cylinder moter and three speed transmission. I can do any repair to this pickup that it mite need! Ford started building in 1903 way longer than Chevy or dodge brothers!
Do the math, if Mr. Turner started at 16 yo in 1953 then he would be just 80, a few years older than me. I was working at Holman Moody in 1965 before I was inducted in the Army. Always been a Ford man. My first car in high school was a 1959 Ford Galaxie two door with a 352 4v and three on the tree.
Mr Ken, I'm quite a few years behind you my friend! I started professionally working on cars back in 1986 when I was just 18 years old. I had the lucky distinction of being in an era where I had the opportunity to experience working on cars as far back as from the late 40's all the way through the then new models. I was the kid back then, who could rebuild and tune your carb, install and set your points, but I could also diagnose and repair the newest fuel injected cars too. I remember every one of those "forgotten" Fords in this video. Hell. ...I've owned quite a few of them myself! I'm mainly a Chevy guy, but I like the others as well. I've had Mustangs, Mustang II, Pinto's, Mavericks, Fairmont's, LTD'S, LTD II'S , Torinos, F &E series trucks...etc. So like yourself, I vividly remember these Fords, and what I didn't personally own, I fixed for customers. They might be forgotten to the younger generation of gearheads, but not to me! .
Obviously the makers of this video was never pulled over by a cop in the last 30yrs, or they would not have the Crown Victoria or Ltd on this list.

Thought exact same thing as you as our grandkids have had a crown Vic for years the wife ran it into the ground and got a Buick century from a lady who quit driving!
I guess I am old. Either I myself, or one of my friends have owned each and every one of those models over the years. And I would LOVE an early 70 Maverick to build up with a modern Coyote 5.0....

Ive got a beautiful 1970 mav just picked up a couple months ago... its getting the trans rebuilt right now. Soon to be a 11 sec daily driver.

Holy cow! When I was a teenager I so wanted a 302 grabber. The most underrated pony car of the 70's.
The Maverick is considered a classic muscle car in Brazil where it was locally fabricated.
A friendof mine had theeven more rare "Grabber". I bet he wishes he had it now. Remember the key could also be used as a screw driver? :-)

As a 26 year old I appreciate classic cars and grateful that my father (rest in peace) taught me the importance and appreciation of American classic cars. It may not be of interest to you guys but I have a 85 caprice classic. Had it for 10 years now . I got the engineremanufactured this year, rebuilt Trans in 2014 and spectre blue metallic paint in 2010 along with 2 inch white walls. Much appreciation for classic cars

That chassis was started in 1977 and was used till 1996 they were the best driving and comfortable cars that G.M built they were way under powered.....got to have at least a 454 in those.....and the 350 turbo was weak too I have a 64-72 A body and a tweaked on 454 and it is good for a cruiser the 69 Riv has a tweeked on 513 inch Cadillac engine it moves the 4400 pound car ok but your car weights in at about 4300 pounds so it need about 500 cubic inches to make it have that smashed back in seat feel when you step on it.......and you won't need to floor it just to get it to move and the highway gas mileage will improve too,retired for the business for years,Doug

0:39 My first car, was a 1971 Ford Maverick in "Grabber" trim. Intake, exhaust, headers, traction bars, Hurst shifter, gears...Old school mods before the age of computers...Premium gas, bump up the timing, and you were ready to race!
And lean out the carburetor .
I remember every one of these. I owned a '92 Probe. I hate Fords with a passion, but the Probe was one of the better cars I've ever owned. Unfortunately, there were rumors circulating at the time that the Probe's transmissions weren't great, and the cost to replace one was around $800 - a little more than pocket change in my piggy bank. So it scared me into selling it.
Turns out the guy who bought it, bought it for his son who drove the car for a long time. Last I saw of it it was still running good.
A Crown Vic....? every police force in the country had them at some point.....not forgotten at all !

You really should title this "8 forgotten fords you've never heard about if you're under about 30". Not only have I heard of _all_ of them, the Fiesta is the only one I haven't either driven or ridden in.
Fiestas are fun to drive specially the older models like the 1 in the vid if you find a nice lil rs1800 there fast for such small car

Well i heard a ton of the 15362478 firing order..can't stand that stupid Girggleing sound nothing like the sound of 18436572........................+ under a load those short stroke engines take a shit/no torque .....and sound like shit,unless they have a forced air intake or tons of N20 ..son of a 50's/60's drag racer......
Fair points Doug. I like high revving V8s more. Always hated BBCs that go to 5k redlines and then the owners kept saying torque all the time. It might be the right solution for unlimited cubes racing (low redline BBC with turbos) but for sound and impression on people (and kids, the next gen of racers) the high revving stuff always seems to win people's hearts. I know its European, but have you ever heard the 3.4-4.0L DOHC V8s from Judd? ... They make LM engines mostly but also for hillclimbs.

boss Goodman- Okay then you should know Government Motors should be bankrupt. Probably Chrysler also. Ford however sold its controlling stock interest in Mazda, Jaguar, Range Rover and Aston Martin to stay out of the American tax payers pocket. GM never paid their loan back fully even though the labor unions arm twisters tell everyone they did.
One more thing you know, the Ford Foundation went full Commie in the '60s. As of 1970 FoMoCo divested all of their ties with those leftist goons and started 'The Ford Fund'.

Possibly, if you're 20 years old, you've never heard of these cars, but if you're 58 years old,
you've probably driven them... Right now, we have 2 Mavericks in the shop, one V8 4 speed
car, and one I6 3speed car, both waiting for an engine refresh and body work.
As for the others, we have a Fairmont coupe waiting for an engine (2.3Lturbo) and an
unmentioned car, an XR4Ti, waiting for a T5 swap. We are also building a '72 Pinto with
a 2.3L turbo and T5 for one of our mechanics, should have about 300hp when is all said
and done...

Loved the Maverick, it was a poor man's Mustang. And those Contours with the HO V6 we're a beast especially if you had three pedals on the floor.
Rob Steingruber, I had a 98 Contour SVT & it was a beast. The SVTs only had 3 peddles. Absolute blast to drive.

Is this a Ford Guide for alien life forms? Half of these were huge sellers. Heck, the Crown Vic is probably the highest volume and longest lasting fleet patrol car in US History. Are you trying to argue that the world has forgotten what every cop car looked like from 1980-2005?

Ford changed the name but I agree, basically the same car up until the last Crown Vic police car rolled off the assembly line a few years ago.
The car was originally called the Ford LTD, then that name was changed to the LTD Crown Victoria, then Ford dropped the LTD part and just called it the Crown Victoria.
The police cars in the Blues Brothers were Dodge Monacos. They must have killed hundreds of them.

While the bodies did change, the frames were only improved.
I know of one where a guy took an '80s body, and put it on a last generation Interceptor P7B frame.
That turned out to be one hell of a car.
My dad and one of his best friends were both Ford fanatics. Both had LTD's when his son and I were growing up. We called them "Load of Tin from Detroit" because they were so freaking slow and flimsy. So when his dad surprised him with an LTD II for his birthday, I immediately annointed it "the second load of tin from Detroit"! I was voted out of the tribe, I switched to bowties. Man, I miss those days and him! Partners in crime!
Man I had a blacked out 78 Fairmont futura with a 460. Loved that car.

I'm almost 58 years old, and I remember all of these cars. I had a '78 Fairmont Futura with the 302 V-8 and 3-speed automatic. It was nothing fancy, but it ran like a champ until the day I sold it, many years later.

Shit those Ford Fairmont that were made as police interceptors were no joke ,I was sick when a cop chased me down while I was trying to outrun him in my 1969 AMC AMX with the 390 big block Go Package ,that big ass Ford pulled right along side me while my spedo was buried past the 140 mark ,we had to be doing 150 mph and I had the AMX maxed out ,that cop actually pulled ahead of me by 4 or 5 car lengths rather quickly to show me I had no f-ing chance of out running him ,I'd love to find a Fairmont police interceptor that hasn't had its drive train modified , those big ass cars weren't no joke on the freeways .
Michael Ledford the Caprice was another. At 120mph it was floating on air! Smooth as can be!

Mark Chidester The days of the land yachts were awesome ,the things I miss most about modern cars is the eleminating of column shifters on cars ,that feeling of riding on a sofa at 150 mph ,just floating over bumps ,and Jockey shift motorcycles with rocker foot clutches ,I really miss the side vent windows you could push or crank open .
The one and only time I ran from a cop was back in 1990. I was 32 years old. Driving a 1990 Nissan stanza 2.4L. That car hauled ass. Anyway, the cop was going in the opposite direction and flagged me down for going 70 in a 55 on the freeway. I knew by the time he turned around that Nissan would have me way down the road. Hell, I had truckers waving me on as I passed them, they prolly had police scanners, and I drove about 15 miles and stopped at a Jack n the Box, went in and bought a soda pop. Came back out and 4 state police cars were parked in the lot across from me and they were looking in my direction. They didn't do anything and I just drove off like I had no idea what was going on.
Damn I was lucky. But that Nissan was fast.

When I moved from San Diego up to the Seattle area a decade ago, I was blown away by the number of clean Mavericks I spotted. Also spotted some decent 1st gen Barracudas and a couple of AMC Marlins. Obviously the latter two aren't Fords, but it seemed weird coming from SoCal, (Where you usually find abnormally well preserved cars,) that a place with actual weather had these 35-40 year old cars I'd never or rarely laid eyes on before.
Seattle area it rains like Hell. Every damn day, except for three weeks in late august. Most fatalities in Seattle happen when a motorist stops his car, opens the door= AND DROWNS... SEATTLE SUCKS BALLS.
Everyone of these cars are not even forgotten. Maybe by the younger people who dont care abiut care culture, but for the majority of us in the car community know every one of these already and won't forget them because its fords heritage. Hell even alot of the Chevy and Dodge guys and girls I know havent forgoten any of these.
I've driven all of these cars and have owned 4 of them. The LTD Crown Vic, the LTD II, the Fairmont and the Maverick Grabber. I don't remember it on this video but I also had a Falcon Futura from the 60's and a Ford Grenada from the 70's. I miss them all.

I feel old. I remember every one of these cars, and drove about half of them. But at 63 I can remember seeing Edsels, Falcons, Comets, and Galaxy 500’s as a kid on the road.

I actually owned a Maverick. Mine was just a V6. Not a hot rod but also didn't give me any trouble.
I have owned at least 3 of these cars. My favorite was a 1974 Ford Maverick. It had a 302 V8, automatic transmission with a shift kit. After much pressure I let them neighbor buy it and he gave it to his 16 yr old son. He wrecked it a little over a month later. I went to the grave yard (junk yard) to pay my last respects and see what was left. The guys at junk yard had already took the engine out and put it in their flat track race car.

OMG the Fiesta mark I !!!! My dad bought it by second hand in 1979 and wreck it only at the end of millennium... what a car....... still in my heart!
I owned some of these over the years. My LTD II was exactly like the one featured. It was huge. I had several LTD's they were all good cars. I had a Contour that was good but succumbed to the effects of road salt and died by a wicked electrical fire. One car that should have made your list is the Granada. Very popular in the day but I never see them anymore.

Aaaah the memories! I’m in my 40s and a car guy so while I understand that these cars many have forgotten by most, I remember them well.
I have actually driven the LTD II, a 1972 Ford Courier, 1988 Ford Probe (but not the GT as shown) and a 1996 Ford Contour (but not the SVT). I have also driven the Mercury version of the Ford LTD Crown Vic.
I did my first engine swap using the 1972 Courier, I moved the engine from that to an early 80s Courier.
I have ridden in a Maverick and would love to get my hands on a Maverick Grabbar. A good friend of mine was given a Ford Fairmont as his first car but he didn’t accept it (spoiled I know).
When I drove my cousin’s LTD II, I was very early in my driving experience and quite overshot my grandparent’s driveway that I was supposed to turn in to because the car was so heavy and I started breaking too late. My cousin had installed a Sparkomatic stereo and equalizer in the car that I really liked.
Another forgotten car not on the list, the Ford Granada. My grandmother drove one of those for years and it was later passed down to my aunt. It was a late 70s ghia model, lime green with a white vinyl opera roof and interior.
Other cool forgotten cars.... The 80s Dodge Daytonas especially the Turbo Z like in Hunter. Also, the Mitsubishi Starion/Chrysler Conquest twins, Subaru SVX, Subaru XT, Dodge Rampage and the Nissan 200SX.
I remember the Maverick......sadly my memories are of rusted out front fenders on those last models available.....Ford quality was abysmal by the end of the run and it left a lasting impression......too bad too.....because that 1970 version BEFORE the federal mandated bumpers the car was actually a pretty clean lined good looking little car.

Never heard of? I've ridden in almost every one of these, my brother owned a Maverick, a friend owned several of the others. But, I'm only 51 years old. I doubt you could come up with one I haven't heard of.

I love Mavericks, every time I see a hot wheel Maverick I purchase it. They’re light, good looking, somewhat aerodynamic. With a built to the hilt 302 what more could you want.
The body degisn was done by the same guy that did the DeTomaso/Pantera the small 302 is weak and the oil system was not all that good, the heads were good degisn the 351 Winsor was a much stronger fondation I have dissambled 2 302's and the cranks were broken at the thrust..................the 50 oz weighted ones are really weak when try to put power to them......they will granade and the factory rods,They are crap too,that Maverick/Hot Wheels one is pretty rare I had tons of them back in 1968...................my younger brother ruined them all,Doug

I forgot about the exp. A two seater. I had an 87 excort ,1.9,4speed. On a trip to Florida i got 39.8 mpg.

Loved my 80 Ford Fiesta. It was hilarious for stoplight to stoplight racing against much bigger cars. Pissed off a few folks who figured they were going to beat me. I really miss that thing.

It was hilarious to see Chris racing against other cars bigger than his little 'puddle jumper' during rush hour traffic, trying to get to work on time... That lili' car really did make them run for their money! Lol.

That Kent series 4 banger powered th Anglia, Cortina, invarious displacements & cyl head improvements .even the first Pinto till the 2.0L came.

"Back in the day," my uncle had a pea soup green Maverick with manual shift and "power nothing". He loved it! I think it reminded him of his days in the Army during WWII. He lived in the Berkshire Mts. and drove it like it was a jeep-with a roof! FYI; I also had a '96 Probe for awhile. Our family loved Fords.

Maverick isn't forgotten, it's perfect for drag racing, and the Contour was a hard to work on POS that had electrical, and mechanical issues with reliability I had to work on a lot of contours and I hated them

A Maverick was my ex's first car when she was young and she told me stories abouth the awful build quality and its unreliability.
Max Jonson My mechanic said the same thing.about the Contour. He said the engine compartment was too tight to work on the car easily. He said the SVT version was quick, but to avoid buying them like the plague. ..
My wife's Contour had electrical issues and eventually burned itself to the ground. I believe it was a rebadged European car. Did not do well with North Eastern road salt.
I was tempted to buy an SVT Contour that has slight front end damage for way cheap, it does need the radiator replaced but then I saw how cramped that engine bay is so I will pass......decent looking car tho.
The Fairmont is the same as a Fox body Mustang. Same exact chassis, added a square body.
I had a friend with 2. 1967 390 and a total sleeper. he loved that damn thing.
and a much longer wheelbase for the Fairmont.
You're thinking of a Fairlane, not a Fairmont
Fairmont was "Fox Body". That was the platform. Same as the 79 up Mustang. Also T Bird, LTD, Granada etc. It was a modified McPherson strut front, and a coil spring rear. IIRC it was originally developed in Europe (A lot of Ford's architecture in the 70's was developed by Ford Europe).

My grandpa had a tan Courier in the mid-80s, the county sheriff's dep't. where my dad served as deputy had LTD Crown Vic's for their squad cars in the mid-80s as well (so did the state highway patrol then), a neighbor of mine when I was a kid had a Maverick, a friend of mine had a Contour he bought new back in '97, my uncle used to drive a blue Fiesta as a 2nd car (and another friend of mine had a white one), and I remember seing Fairmonts (memorable for their boxiness) and LTD II's often on the road also when I was a kid back inthe '80s. So yeah, forgotten if you weren't around back then. ;)
I owned a Ford Maverick many years back , good little car , paid $ 100 for it , drove for a couple of years , got good gas milage , (at that time gas was cheaper I admit ) but I could drive all week for $9 a week, back and forth to work and leisure hours 😃Miss those , made sense , less violent world .

Ahh, the Maverick. As the Mustang gained weight the Mav was a return to simple times. Only problem was it was the mid 70s and the detuning of engines was it demise. Ford fuel tank problem was with ALL of it small vehicles. The trunk floor was the top of the fuel tank. I owned a 64 1/2 Stang from 1981-86, then a 1967 Fairlane GT from 1990-2001. Same damned fuel tank design. By the way you all forgot the Pinto, the wagon version was actually pretty nice. That was our parts hauler. God those were fun days when these cars were cheap used cars, my Stang costed $2000 with new paint!
My friend had a 67 Fairlane Gt 390. Ugly as hell muscle car, but a total sleeper. That damn thing rattled the pavement at idle.
I was 16 in ‘82. Bought a ‘71 Maverick with the straight 6 250 for $500. It would lay 10 ft. of scratch without the brake. Top speed of 85 mph!!! Just right for a stupid kid: plenty of fun but not so fast that (fill in the blank). Hey, the speed limit was 55 back then anyway. So simple I could do all the maintenance myself. Thrashed it for 4 years, then sold it still running strong for $400.
Dennis Norwood my friend had a Pinto station wagon and we used it for hauling car parts and junkyard runs. Back in those days nothing was reproduced. They were all just used cars bought cheaply, not anymore.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles but did 10th grade high school in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1983-84. The Maverick was very popular over there at the time. Unlike here in the U.S., in Mexico they had 302 V8's and Top Loader 4 speeds. I came to love them.
Oh, and the Fiesta was a fun car to drive. I owned three in the past and currently one.

My first car was a 1979 ford Fairmont handed down from my grandma. It was a sedan with 50,000 miles, pretty clean, way under powered, tiny little 4 cylinder motor, putting out all of 85hp. When my friends had cutlass, chevelle, mustangs, I was most definitely pulling up the rear, but I did manage to put in a 1000 watt stereo and a graphic eq.

I've had most of these cars, plus a Mustang 2, and a tempo , that 94 tempo was probably the most trouble free car i ever had
MAVERICK is one of the most beloved cars in Brazil. Its 302 engine was the second largest of a street car in the country at the time, behind only the Dodge 318. If Americans may not give importance to it, we Brazilians love the FORD MAVERICK a lot. And as a personal opinion, I consider MAVERICK much more beautiful than the Mustang. Thanks Ford Motor Company for bringing this amazing car to Brazil.

Really ? Wow that 302 or 5.0 would come to life if properly tuned and you drive it right .Make most tough guys cry in the passenger seat begging to get out of car . But I like rwd ! Rwd cars aren't as forgiving when out drive yourself !!!

My plumber buddy has a Maverick w/a 289 in a covered trailer, I had a '78 Fairmont that I put a 351 Windsor and a toploader 4 speed in, the first electrical company I worked for had a courier pickup as our runner truck, a black belt buddy of mine had a badass Probe back in the day, and love the LTD II & Crown Vic!!!!
My mom had a Crown Vic and that car was so bad ass. I used to borrow it in High school and one time I had 8 other people in it (9 total) because we were all going to an under age club in the next town over. No seat belts of course... It scares me now because I could have destroyed 9 families with one fuck up, but at the time it was just fun. And it was like a damn clown car as we all got out. Oh one other memory. The Crown Vic was what a lot of police departments used for cruisers back then. My moms was the same dark navy blue as the squads. A few times we would get behind kids we knew from town and just shake a flash light back and forth really fast to look like a strobe light. Now grant you it was just a white light, but thats how nervous kids were of being pulled over. So they saw a big ass Crown Vic with a strobing light on the dash and would think it was an unmarked car and pull over. Then we would drive buy and laugh. Good thing I never got caught doing that either.

I love the Mavericks, my sister had a grabber with the 302 and the cool snouts on the hood. It was white with blue trim, stripes. I wish I had that car today to wrench on.
I not only remember these cars, but I owned several of them. My favorite was a '99 Probe GT. Wish I could find them now.
I am VERY familiar with all these cars. All great cars except the FWD Probe, Contour, and Fiesta.

I love the Maverick body style. It was sort of Fords version of the Chevy Nova. Would make a real nice hot rod or drag racer. For those who live in states where insuring a car as a collector vehicle makes it exempt from emissions testing, you can build anything you want out of it.
If you're referring to the later Korean Fiestas, you're right. But the first Fiesta was a German built car with the British Ford Kent 1.6, and these cars were fabulous for their size. They were pricey though. My dad bought a brand new E250 Van and a Fiesta Ghia in 1978 for our business, and the Fiesta cost more than the 3/4 ton V8 Econoline did.

I actually loved the Probe. My aunt and uncle purchased one new in the late 80s, an LX with a V6, 5-speed manual and I drove it a few times and thought it was remarkably quick for the era and handled quite well.
I have a 1089 Probe in the driveway right now. Basic trim model, no power, but fun to cruise around in

I've drove every last Ford that you have shown on that little clip and I've been driving since I was 16 and I'm 49 now and worked on every one of them too so keep on bringing stuff like this I like this stuff but I like to see more about the Thunderbolts and the Fairlanes and all the old cars
When I met my wife in January of 1981 my sister in law had a medium blue 64 Fairlane 20 door....post.....din't know my father in law was going to throw it away it was a S.F. Bay area,The car built at the Milpitas plant right up the street from Fremont CA.no rust at all lazer straight paint was original and good too,he got 35.00 for it,that was tragic......later i asked what did you do with and he told me? He said the front end was wore out? din't know he was going to toss it I could fixed for nothing that is what i did for a living......................Doug
