      The Ford 351C is considered a medium block engine. It was the start of what are known as the 335 series engines. The other engines in this series are 400 and 351M. The 351c had the small block bellhousing pattern while the other 2 shared bellhousing bolt pattern with 429 and 460 pattern. Ford didn't have cut an dry big block small block like Mopar and Chevy. They had engine families. There was a family of smallblock, then the 335 series medium blocks, they had 2 separate families of big blocks. The first were the FE series and the latter being 429 an 460....better known as the 385 series. Then Ford had MEL v8s, Lincoln, Yblocks and different size families of heavy truck engines

    How is the coyote not on this list? High revving, high power, high tech, affordable (relative to other engines like it), efficient, easy to work on (compared to modular motors at least), huge aftermarket. I don't know as much about the older engines, but I really don't think they were all as big of a deal as the mighty coyote. It's so widely accessable and has so much to offer, I think it deserves to be on this list.

  • @1LOCKNLOAD
    @1LOCKNLOAD Před 4 lety +10

    The 351c has got to be on that list. The 427 SOHC would be on any list and I personally like the 390 HO. By the way the Boss 429 put out way more than the published 375 HP.

    • @bwtv147
      @bwtv147 Před 3 lety +1

      The 429 / 460 is an impressive engine but you need a big vehicle to have room for it. They called the Mopar 426 Hemi the "elephant" motor but the Ford 385 block engines take up even more room. I don't think they ever got all the bugs worked out of the SOHC 427.

A fleet vehicle that had been serviced regularly, but run every day on service calls. It now has 300,000+ miles. I've driven it just short of 150,000 miles myself. Has never had any major work done to eng. or trans. Just normal service. Was just across the country in march '17'. Good, dependable, gutsy engine. Oh, I'm an OLD gearhead from the 50-60s era. 75, and still doing my own service work.

Just did good maintenance on it, never had to take the motor apart. When I sold it, it still didn't smoke, & would light up the 16.5 x 10s in a cloud of smoke. And, with our 11-1/2 ft Camper, it would walk away from similar loaded GM & Mopars in the Mountains. That was a reliable & strong engine.

As delivered, in a 1/4 mile drag race, the street version BOSS 9's weren't the quickest mustangs in the 2 years they were build, although they probably did have the most HP - just not enough low end torque. The stock cam would give out no longer after the RPMs were high enough for those huge ports and valves to work. A motor designed for 8000 RPMs saddled with a street cam is a bad combination.

      The California Garage the 5.0ho wasn't that great. It was built during the smog Era which was still trying to figure out how they could make clean performance engines. The ho suffered from small ports , small valves and only around 9-9.2:1 compression . 225hp at the crank was nothing special , but it did have 300 ft lb torque which helped it push the mustang to get decent acceleration times. And I'm talking about the very best HO, the cobra gt40 302 used in the 83 cobra was better. It had actual performance heads not the e7 heads which were an after thought (truck heads with mods), better flowing intake manifold and the later explorer used these parts too.
