How? Like really, how did this game series went from having so much depth and lore to none at all? Isn't it much more fun to work on stories and plant here and there some references and eastereggs than just build nice looking shells?

I was so disappointed when I opened the Sims 4 for the first time and couldn‘t find any lore. I loved to explore the classics as a child, like the Caliente-Lothario-Langerak love triangle and I was so excited seeing Bella and Mortimer as children and even seeing Kaylynn and her family dynamic in Sims 3. I also loved Veronaville to pieces and I wanted to find more answers through Sims 4. And then I open the game, seeing the Goths together, the Calientes with a unknown women, which isn‘t their mother, I closed the game right away and went to bed. This is the main thing I‘m really bitter about and we all know that it can‘t be fixed.

@@sophie9984 I felt the exact same way, except I did like seeing the Goths together again - I have soft spot for Bella & Mortimer, but I totally feel your pain. :( And all through the crap expansions, nothing got better. Each person was as flat a cardboard cutout as the last.

I study pedagogy in Spanish and I know the real history of this character. "Don Lothario" or Don Juan Tenorio (his name in Spanish) comes from an ancient Spanish myth. There are several books that tell his story such as Don Juan Tenorio by José Zorrilla and El Burlador de Sevilla y Convidado de Piedra by Tirso de Molina. Both books tell the story of a womanizer who seduces women through trickery to take away their virginity. In Spanish-speaking countries, womanizing men are often called "Don Juan". In the sims 2 we can clearly see that Don Lothario is of Spanish blood. An example of this is his Mediterranean-style house. Sorry for my bad English but I thought it was important to clarify his origin because I love his history a lot.

I figured he was a play on Don Juan, the womanizer, but I could see the involvement of Don Quixote as well. Sims 2 went there just combining all sorts of references.

If you're still not in the mood to read it, I recommend listening to Ada Milea's musical theatre adaptation of the book, the album is called Quixote and there is an English version of it, I believe it's on CZcams as well. It's *very* shortened tho, yet still extremely fun! 😀

My theory:
When Dina and Nina Caliente found out they were being played by Don a certain tension happened betwen the sisters. I learned that there's a certain game guide of how to play sims 2 pleasant view households in order to fit in the story, and following this guide Don marries Cassandra (wich maches with the affirmation in the sims 2 of Don marring Cassandra for her money at the begining but accidentaly falling in love with her) (Also, folliwing this guide, Don accoplish his casanova lifetime wish before marring Cassandra, so he happly acepts marry her). After Mortimer's death of old age, Nina and Dina becomes friends again and Dina emotionally damaged for losing another husband fix a plan to break Cassandra and Don's marriage. So they split out. Then the Caliente sisters fix a prank for Don Lothario to teach him a lesson and scare him, so they use a machinne form her alien relatives and start the plan. I don't think the Caliente sisters were the type of person that would make dissapear a person intentionally, so I think the prank goes wrong and Don is teleported to an unknow place. The caliente sisters feel bad and gulty. It wasn't their intention. So they decide move into Barcacle Bay and try to forget their acctions. (This affects Dina and Nina emotionally in their personalities, that's why they are different in Barnacle Bay). Don and Dina were never the kind of having childs, He was a romantic sim and she was looking for her own good, so none of them had childs with the Goths. That's why Cassandra belives that after breaking with Don he just leaves the town, so she falls into Darren's arms.
Back in River View, Don is teleported into a farm with not much money, he looks for a way to survive in the town not remembering much about how he arrived. Using his skills he manage to find some jobs around town to get money enough to convince Mr McDermott to selling him the old granery, Mr McDermott accepts because of his financial situation. Then somewhen, around town he meets Rodah and she falls in love sending him some gifts for her new life in the granery. This may or may not have caused tension between her and her mother. I really have another theory about that.

@Deh Alcântara That plot is possible, it once crossed my mind, but maybe is because I always spect the best from everyone I didn't belived. I belive that wat happened between Don and Bella was a misunderstund. As much as I know about Bella she's a nice person, lovely mother, devoted wife, (The nicest person in the sims game) Bella is like a gothic Holy Alto. Afther analyzing the Bella's interview and the hidden message in the Roth family (I think the Roth family was a similar vision of Bella and Mortimer marriage) my conclusion was that Bella had depression because her husband Mortimer is a workaholic and the romance in the relationship was fading off, Bella loves Morty but feels gulty for not being able to loving him the same way she used to in the past.
The night she dissapeard she went to talk to Don, Is a fact that Don and Bella baceme friends when he moved in because of Bella good approach when he moved in the city. Don is used to be desired for most of the woman he meet, that's why he mistaked Bella's friednship as the attemp of something more romantic, so he tries a move on Bella wich she gently rejects. Don understand that the situation was a misundertund and they keep the friendly relationship. The night keeps nice and Bella shows interest in Don's telescope and then she gets kidnapped without Don noticing or remembering.
About Dina, she may have had a good relationship with Bella, because of Bella nice personality.
Afther Bella dissapearence Dina sees how Mortimer looses all the hope, she feels empathic because she also lost her husband, (Bella's brother). I think Dina is a character that feels emotionally broken, she feels sad about the lost of Michael Bachelor and tries to hide her pain spending the heritage and relying on her sister but then econonomic problems arrive and she needs help. I don't think Dina is a gold digger, I think she just felt that she and Morty lost someone improtant, and they both feel identified with each other pain. Maybe Dina really doesn't love Morty, as she did with Michael, but she needed the money and each other know the same pain, so "why not?" "who cares?" "Is marry Morty and help my sister or live alwais from her and never love again, maybe love will come eventually".
Don feel gulty about that night with Bella, inconsciously that leads him into a Bella's live image, her daugther Cassandra. Is also a fact that Don had a monetary interest in Cassandra, maybe because of what happened with Bella he didn't feel like the relation couldn't be more than interest on the money, But he eventually finds himself developing feelings for Cassandra. as we know from the sims 2.
My theory about Bella keep going into a much larger but I already went way too far than you asked. But I hope I made my poin of view clear.

I believe the fact that Sims 4 is in a different timeline than Sims 2 and 3 is intriguing. I believe either Alexander/Cassandra Goth who tried to save their mother Bella from alien abduction through a time machine. The time machine malfunctioned leading to messing up the sims ages and sending all Sims 2 sims to different timelines. That’s why Don Lothario is in Riverview which 50 years before Sims 2. That’s why Alexander wrote that book and That’s Sims 4 Mortimer is the same age as Nancy Landgraab and not Malcolm/Johnny Zest like in the Sims 3.

I like to think that Bella regained her memories and moved back to Pleasantview. She saw that Don had been engaged to and had left Cassandra at the altar and decided to get revenge. So she tells Dina, Nina and Kaylynn about his infidelities and Nina, Dina and Bella use their connections to aliens to get the tech to teach him a lesson by sending him to a more traditionalist, sleepy rural town where he won't be able to woo too many beautiful young women. And all of them laugh and go for a drink afterwards.

Don turning up on their farm reminds me of the scene in back to the future when Marty turns up in the barn in the space suit haha
Most farmers I've met are very empathetic and friendly people so if they know or saw Don appear on their farm, in a world that is very different and strange from his past, they probably took pity on him and offered him the grannery for shelter and a job on the farm to help him get by. ❤️

About him moving into the Granery. I think tbh the Mother was living there. Passed away and when Don came, on their lot, they Didn't see him teleport, they offered him to stay if he helps a little at the farm. But the gaming console I have no idea. And those stairs inside for that old lady, oof. Atleast she had an old car Don got.
Reminds me of like Clark Kent and other movies where people let strangers move in their barns and so on.
There's this other theory I heard about regarding Bella's disappearance. Everyone is so quick to assume Don and the Caliente's were involved, but some people speculate that Mortimer is responsible. Think about this, in the sims 2, Mortimer is a retired Mad Scientist, meaning he most likely had some knowledge, if not contact, with aliens. According to Mortimer's memories, he was still an adult when Bella was abducted, meaning he was still employed in the science career. (Please note that his memory of Bella being abducted is positive, not negative like one would think) The Caliente sisters family bio says they "arrived on the eve of Bella's disappearance." To keep this theory short, Mortimer met the Caliente sisters and was attracted to both of them (yes both, because he gets the want to flirt with Nina even though he is with Dina) and wanted a side piece. But to make sure Bella didn't find out, he figured out a way to have his wife abducted so he could get with a new, pretty, young thing.
It’s like that scene in BTTF when Marty initially crashes into the family farm where the mall parking lot will eventually be and they’re absolutely terrified and think there’s an alien in their barn

the idea that he knows the criminal girl makes me think he was teleported on to the farm's property, scaring this theif girl so bad she ran from the home and decided not to rob it. The family was grateful for this as they do not have very much cash, and as a result gave Don a place to stay in a part of the farm they hadn't been in since the grandmother passed.

I get that Don was going to teleport somewhere and the "several" women had conspired to reprogram his destination. Most likely it was Kaylyn, Dina and Nina, as Bella had already gone missing. If they had tricked him to get on the thing, he would have known who was laughing, not just that it was "several women."
I started a game in Riverview recently, I have the paradise island pack and it made Don a merman so I am just putting that out there. Idk if that was just randomly generated in to the place either. Just found it very very funny.

I love the household and individual sim bios. You can choose to ignore them or actually play out their stories, which I find really fun. I didn't see a lot of this in the Sims 4, or I thought the bios was boring as heck. Since I have boycotted Sims 4 these stories can be interesting and maybe flare up some interest in the series again. Too bad all my Sims 3 cds are hidden away in some boxes that would take months to rummage to haha.

I think that your theory about the granny living in the old grainary is correct. Even if the description says:" abandoned for years" and even if there's a Gaming system it would make sense. Maybe she's been dead for years and her grandchildren used to come to her "house" and play with the gaming system.

This is interesting because I've never thought about the implications of where he was living. What always felt most canon to me is that the Caliente sisters sent him there, since it mentions laughing women, and they have alien DNA so they would know about time travel. This is especially interesting considering it's a mirror of what happened to Bella

Have you considered doing a video on seeing how well the AlexPlaysSims bella goth theory fits in with the hints in the game i would be really keen on your take on it!
I would say:
The grannery had been taken out of buisness for a couple of years, however the Bagleys then began restoring some stolen properties in there (gaming console etc.) without the McDurmonts knowledge. So when Luke found Don in the garden, he decided to give him the grannery out of compassion, without knowing of the stolen goods in it. Rhoda came across Don in the grannery, but he propably charmed her to keep it quiet for her mother.
I've been rewatching your videos and I'm actually currently playing with Don. In my game he continued his player ways and accidentally got Rodah Bagley pregnant, they had a baby girl and Rodah decided she didn't want to be a parent so she gave the baby to Don to raise (not the smartest idea). So now Don has to take responsibility and raise his daughter as a single parent.
Since sims 3 is supposed to be like the 1950s or something they probably thought he was an alien or something who just appeared haha
I'm pretty sure Riverview is set in the 80s during the Iowa Farm Crisis... When you read the Carpenter-Rhodos' bio, it's said they are living like it's still the 60s outside ( -which will ultimately help them get through the crisis more easily- ).

I played Don Lothario in Riverview on rotational. Anytime we got a new town in Sims 3 I liked to rotate through the townies just to see who these sims are, what's their story, etc. I think I gave Lothario his lifetime wish, then got him either engaged or married to a nice girl who all I remember is she had the book worm trait. She was probably too good for him, but he already got his lifetime wish so he would be faithful.

Whenever I play, I always have Don break up with Cassandra so he can end up with the maid and Cassandra can end up with Darren Dreamer
The McDermotts seem a decent lot, so I reckon they just gave him the granary since they had no use for it. It's possible the reason they have so little cash is because they paid for the renovations since, Don had no money of his own but probably expect him to work it off, hence why he's unemployed at the start. Don often ends up working at either the science lab or the criminal hideout in my games.
Edit: On a different note: Will you be covering the Broke family in Riverview? There is something seriously odd going on there.

I don't think The McDermotts were afraid of Don, in fact my logical and prosaic self would deduce it's quite the opposite. If you aim for realism in your game and the rules of your sims' world are close to the real world you really don't need to dig deep in order to understand the motives of The McDermotts, you just need common sense as it's really on the surface. In my opinion selling the granary was a purely pragmatic decision from them. The granary description indicates that they *desperately needed* to sell it as they couldn't even afford to maintain it, that's how bad the things on their farm were going. The problem was that, for some reason, no one in Riverview wanted it. Lucky Perkins is homeless but he had no money. And here, all of a sudden appears Don with a need to stay somewhere. I bet they saw it as a truly blessing and didn't think twice before selling it to him. There was no need to befriend or know Don better beforehand, with Luke also being daredevil not helping it either. They just needed money asap and were more than happy to get rid of that dammed granary! As for where has Don had the money from, my assumption is that, even tho inflation doesn't exist in the game as it is (as we play it, likely because of the game's mechanics), we can imagine that it actually does exist in The Sims' world, thus making the money Don owned back in the future valuing more in the past he travelled into.
Some digging a little bit deeper and researching is required only if you'd also like to understand how did the McDermotts get into that financial point of theirs in the first place.
So, judging by their outfits (especially Luke's full denim) and the interior of their farmhouse, it's the 80s in Riverview. The town itself is based on the state of Iowa in general, and specifically Sabula city. Adding to it a similar financial situation of another Riverview's farming family, The Joys, the fact that Ginny is aiming to alternative means of earning money in order to save the farm (perhaps because the prices for the products of the earth have got way too low recently?), while the kids are already more than ready to give up onto farming and do something else in life instead (probably because they've seen the hardships of their parents in upkeeping a farm and are discouraged) - giving all these we can assume that by the start of the game Riverview is most likely in the middle of the infamous Iowa Farm Crisis, the one in which lots of families have lost their farms. You can read on the internet on the reasons behind it and how it unfolded. This explains why no one in Riverview wanted to buy the granary from The McDermotts. As who th would agree to buy a granary in the middle of a farm crisis, right?!
So basically, Don's spawning in Riverview is what, at least temporarily, rescued The McDermotts from going bankrupt and losing their farm. Now the player needs to play their family really smart in order for them to keep their farm further and slowly get out of the crisis. I personally see it as a quite hard, but very fascinating challenge.

Since it's set in a southern type place, it would make sense they gave Don a home due to just being kind.
Hi, I know this was posted 3 years ago, but I hope you see this comment.
I’ve recently been reading into the lore of the Pleasantview families myself to add more detail to my game play. Currently, I’m looking into the Lothario Family & I believe that his character is actually based on the play “The Fair Penitent” (1703) by Nicolas Rowe. More specifically, his character is based on the origin of eponym “Lothario”, which was originally mentioned in the story Don Quixote by who else?... none other than Miguel de Cervantes. Thus theoretically, the Don Lothario is a nod to the famous writer Miguel de Cervantes.
Although his relationships with the other female sims in the neighbourhood could also be a nod to The Nosy and Impertinent Husband by Miguel de Cervantes, I actually think the Devs took inspiration from multiple works of Cervantes in order to develop the individual stories of Don’s relationships between the women of Pleasantview.
Back to why I think that the specific play, The Fair Penitent was the original story that Don Lothario was based on: 1.) In the Sims 2, Don’s father is named Nicolo Lothario, referring to the writer Nicolas Rowe (the “father” of the play). 2.) The Fair Penitent is the closest version of the pre-made sims in Pleasantview, aka Don Lothario = Lothario, Cassandra Goth = Calista, Sciolto = Mortimer Goth, Darren Dreamer = Atlamont (Fair Penitent is an adaption of the play “Fatal Dowry” (1632) by Massinger & Field.) However, in the Sims 2 the roles of the characters are switched a bit… Darren isn’t the one who’s engaged to Cassandra as Atlamont is the one who is engaged to Calista, the love Darren shares for Cassandra is unrequited. Instead, Don (who is seducing women like Cassandra) is engaged to Cassandra (Calista), so he cannot be the one who convinces Cassandra (Calista) to have an affair on Darren (Atlamont aka Calista’s betrothed)… Instead, in many game plays it’s DARREN DREAMER who is trying to seduce Cassandra to cheat on Don. (I have more evidence on this in my Google Doc that I’ve been working on recently)
Lastly, # 3.) I made them a huge farm with the farming store packs and added a tractor. I also gave them the gardening job with the ambitions pack. I ended up having Maximus move out and move in with his boyfriend Trigger. Although I don't know if I will keep it like that since Trigger aged up to an adult and has the heartbreaker lifetime wish xD

Hey 👋 you can get it from the Sims 3 store. It comes free if you have your copy of the Sims 3 registered! I know I've tried to get some things from the sims 3 store but some don't work! I think you can get onto EA as well if it doesn't work since riverview technically comes with sims 3 when you register! I hope it works out for you! 💕
